View Full Version : Cosmic Spdey Tank in 400? Unlikely!

Much ado has been made about the Cosmic Spidey Tank strategy ie: CS blows a hole in the middle of the tank on the Airbase map with his unblockable line of fire, flies into it, and roasts the opposing team in safety and comfort.
What seems to have been missed is the easiest possible counter for this tactic: theme teams.
Making a theme team at a four hundred point level should grant you, at the very least, a +2 to you roll to determine map choice...more likely much higher. At least a +4 if you are playing generic keyword theme.
At present, it is IMPOSSIBLE to create a theme team for Cosmic Spidey at a 400 point level. His only keyword is Cosmic...not a team well-known for it's affordable low-cost members. The cheapest Modern Age legal Cosmic is Gamora at 73 points. Golden Age's 61 point Adam Warlock from Critical mass does not improve the situation much.
In both cases, Spidey gets only one ally...far short of the three he needs to make theme. Against a four-man theme team, Spidey must roll a six to win map choice...and pray his opponent rolls a one.
So, if you fear the CosmicSpiderTank, then my advice to you is (to paraphrase Turdburglar): Live theme or die.

Against a theme team?
My point is that it should only happen if your opponent allowed it to happen by not playing theme.
Or your getting a really good roll for first player.

While less likely, it's not a guarantee to win map choice with a plus 3-5.
Ok, Spidy loses map choice.
But how many other maps offer a similar piece of terrain?
So yes, the Spidy player may not end up with his favorite map. Depending upon what the foe chooses/has access to though it might not matter....

Have fun with your theme team PC rolls when none of your figures have line of sight to him but he does to you.

Umm...not really talking about PC rolls here, thanks.
But how about if I win my map choice roll and then choose a map where NEITHER of our lines of fire will be blocked?
Great Arena might work. Galactus Rooftops would be better.

Now to be fair, he said, it was unlikely, not impossible...
However, I have to agree, about the only point game that this guy is not going to be very dominant in are 300 point games.

Since when do we just roll 1 dice for map choice? It's always been 2.

Well, damn.
Still, if you're up against Cosmic Spidey, you'd best try to grab whatever advantage you can. And the fact that you can make a theme team while he can't would be some advantage...though not as much as I'd thought.
...we really need to start rolling both dice when we play....

You dont need that map to win, even on the great arena he would be hard to stop

But not AS hard.
What about blowing a path into the tank to get him? He can't hide forever. Plus, anybody that would fight this way is a douche.

Conventional wisdom seems to be that Spidey will nuke you while you're digging and run after you finish.
Your opinion of this particular fighting style is well-put.

Even if you lose the map, you will be hard pressed to take out Cosmic Spidey if he is played in the right hands. Not mine, but someone who is good at heroclix.

Acknowledged.
I merely present themed play as a way of weakening Cos somewhat. If you can choose the battlefield, especially against someone like Cosmic Spidey, you increase your odds of winning.

Eh, I don't think it's necessarily being a douche. It's using all the tools at your disposal. If I'm playing a friendly game, I probably wouldn't do that, but if playing in a 400 point game at a big event like Gencon or something, you're darn right I would.
