Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel?!

Hey, I just wanted to confirm this. My friend told me that there is a Captain Marvel in DC and a Captain Marvel in Marvel.

Is that true?

Actauly I think the marvel one is Captain Mar-vel

There have been several Marvel Captain Marvels. There was Mar-vell, who died of cancer. There was the black female Captain Marvel who later changed her name to Photon. And there is the current Captain Marvel, who I believe is Mar-vell's son.

Then over at DC we have the Marvel family who were originally in Whiz Comics. Captain Marvel (who due to copyright issues cannot have a self-titled comic, which is why his comics always have Shazam in the title), Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel. There also used to be the 3 lieutenant Marvels (Tall Marvel, Hill Marvel & Fat Marvel) and Uncle Marvel.

And I'm probably forgetting some too.

There was a pretty lengthy lawsuit between DC Comics and Fawcett Comics (the original publishers of Captain Marvel) that lasted through the fifties. The main basis of the suit was that Cap Marvel was a rip-off of DC's Superman title. It went into way more legal jargon and complexity than that, but the end result was DC owning Captain Marvel (and I believe the rest of the Fawcett properties).

At some point the trademark on the name Captain Marvel lapsed which allowed for Marvel to release their own title called Captain Marvel. This is why anytime you see a book with the DC Captain Marvel it tends to use the word Shazam as its core name, the magic buzzword that gives CM his abilities and powers. It's also a big source of confusion as nearly everyone I know thinks the guy is named Shazam, not Captain Marvel. ;)
