View Full Version : ROCK WARS 16 (70's Songs): Round 1, Match 43

DTM

Okay boys and girls, here we have 128 of our favorite songs from the 70's, from some of our favorite artists, which will be pitted against one another, Match by Match, Round by Round, weeding them all out until they get to the FINAL MATCH, which will have our two favorite showtunes face against one another to see which one emerges as Grand Champion of our latest Rock Wars!

As always, this TOC should be voted using a very simple criteria, which song do YOU like more, which do YOU feel you would rather listen to, and which would YOU say is ultimately more deserving to move on. Easy.

Pretty basic really. Songs are matched up, you all vote on the one you like more, the winner goes to the Next Round, and we do this over and over again until the Rounds are Over. I do ask that you all give objective opinions and votes here, listening to all songs and arguments here within this TOC with an open mind, beginning to end, and base your honest votes from that.

You know the drill by now, as always I ask that you please listen to each song again with each new match before voting. Thanks all.

So without further adieu, let’s get started with the Next match of many matches to come, in HCRs latest Rock Wars, Favorite 70's Song!

I now give you:

DARK LADY
(Cher) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfR9RmUlnhk)

vs.

THE END OF THE WORLD
(The Carpenters) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm17jKf5G9A)

So what say you all - which of these songs will move onto the Next Round, and which will be as dead as disco?

Another tough call, but again at least they aren't real favorites, just both pretty good.

I am going to back The End of the World, but I don't think it has a chance.

Just giving it a little head start.

"Dark Lady" easily for me. Against a better Carpenters song like "Top of the World" maybe but this is Cher at her kitchy 70s best.

If this had been Superstar, we'd have a different match. Dark Lady to advance.

Easy vote for Dark Lady. Just the mood I am in. I love Karen Carpenter's voice but Dark Lady has my vote here.

I dislike Dark Lady even more than I dislike most Cher songs from this era, and that is quite a lot. And though I am not a fan of the Carpenters, I like The End Of The World enough to support its hokey charm at least for this round.

I should have seen this coming. Gee, it's been a long time since one of my nominations has come up, I've been thinking. So of course two get slapped up against each other.

It's kind of funny that it's these two. Both are songs that I hadn't heard, or even thought about, in years, but in the months that I knew I was going to have to come up with noms for this Rock Wars, both of them cropped up again and forced themselves into my consciousness, insisting that I should choose them.

Well needless to say, I'll be both pleased and a little disappointed whichever one moves on, but as for me, I'll take End of the World. It's a bit more meaningful to me.

When it comes to the song End of the World, my favorites are Herman's Hermits and then Skeeter Davis. The song can be pretty powerful when done right. Sorry Gargantua that your songs went up against each other in the first round.

End of the World has been done with much more emotion, and a beautiful voice isn't enough to truly do it justice. Karen did have a beautiful voice, of course, but I couldn't feel the emotion.

A vote for Dark Lady, please.

Eh, it happens. Thanks for the sympathy, but hey don't feel too bad. At least one's guaranteed a second round berth this way.

Damn, Cher looked sexy back then - Dark Lady
...and while I didn't see it, I understand she made quite a comeback in this respect on the MTV awards show recently.:knockedou

Skeeter Davis...oh, man. A pretty blonde c&w star who got banned by the Grand Ole Opry for being a (gasp) protester!

I LOVED "I Can't Stay Mad at You" and "Gonna Get Along Without You Now."

Anyway...

Dark Lady to advance, please...
