View Full Version : Same Name / Different Song - No. 70 I Want You

A while ago we had another musical showdown that featured songs with the same name but different writers/performers. They were one-offs and not done in conjunction with the Rock Wars. Please listen to all the songs, even the ones that you haven't necessarily heard before and then pick your favorites. Some songs may only have two competitors and some may have as many as four or five or six or even seven max. I'll try to weed out the pretenders from the contenders.
Our 70th match-up is I WANT YOU (with thanks to one of our newer players the venerable Mr. IgnatzMouse).
As usual, there are a lot of songs on this one, but this will make for a nice time killer while you're working or blogging or whatever it is you do. Just sit back and listen. Give each song a chance, and then decide.
The last matchup featured the song Once In a Lifetime and was won by The Talking Heads with a surprising No. 2 by Country Music star Keith Urban. Beyonce rolled up on the bottom once again.
In the immortal words of DTM - "So what say you all." Who will be the winner in this latest match-up of Same Name/Different Song? Rank the songs from favorite to least favorite as there's a points system to decide winners & losers. Also, if you like, put in comments about the songs - good or bad, it's all cool.

Aww, that "To Want Me" at the end of the title appears to have disqualified Cheap Trick.

Aww, that "To Want Me" at the end of the title appears to have disqualified Cheap Trick.
I thought it would qualify because I had hoped that "to want me" was in parenthesis, but no such luck.

Tom Waits - You can pretty much call this and Bob Dylan 1a and 1b as they are both incredible songs. This one just barely edges out Bob in part because I have been listening to acoustic covers of Sufjan Stevens all morning (and loving them) and this fits nicely with that. But ask me tomorrow and the order could easy be switched.
Bob Dylan - This is one of my favourite tracks from one of my favourite Dylan albums. It is just a silly love song, but the music is so fantastic you don't even care what the lyrics are about. I love this track.
The Troggs - What a great gritty, dirty rock song. The next time me and the rest of my 1960's era british gang are suiting up for war with some mods, this is the song that will play in my head.
Elvis Costello - The lyrical structure is pretty simplistic and the musical accompaniment is pretty sparse, but Costello makes it work and work well. He puts so much heart into every recording it is hard not to get swept up into all of his tracks.
Marvin Gaye - Wow there are really some all-stars on this list. Another outstanding track by another outstanding artist. I can't believe that this list is so good that marvin ends up as low as this, this could easily be number one on a lot of these lists.
And then a HUGE drop to:
Savage Garden - I admit it, when this song first came out I kind of dug it's super commercial groove. And I am still a bit of a sucker for the rapid fire verses but as soon as that chorus kicks in I come to my sense and this song completely loses me.
Kings of Leon - This and Savage Garden are like elementary school kids trying to take a graduate level University class. To say they aren't even close would be a huge understatement. This uninteresting track would be in tough most weeks but this week it doesn't stand a chance. Not nearly good enough.

Mine:
Elvis Costello: Hey, it was the inspiration for the choice. When I first heard this song, I was rather *meh* about it. Fast forward several years, to just past one nasty breakup, and I finally understood the song in a not-so-pleasant way. The Fiona Apple cover is pretty much aces as well.
Tom Waits: Wow, simple and nice. Beats Dylan at the same game.
Troggs: "Urgh urgh we're playing Rock and Roll!" Which is a style I happen to like!
Bob Dylan: Marred mostly by the fact that it's a little generic Dylan to me, which always makes me think of Dewey Cox's Royal Jelly. Sweet, though.
Marvin Gaye: Likewise, a somewhat generic-though-unoffensive offering.
Kings of Leon: Goofy, not all that good.
Savage Garden: Yikes. Not familiar with the band, this makes it sound like an emo/synth act was trying unsuccessfully to channel Prince.

Aww, that "To Want Me" at the end of the title appears to have disqualified Cheap Trick.
I also had Meat Loaf keep popping up in my head, but his famous use isn't the song title.

Looking at just the list, before listening to anything, I am wondering if I really want to participate... A who's who of "I never really liked (or don't like) them"s with a few "Who?"s thrown in for good measure.
Let's hear what we have...
1) Savage Garden- Oh, I remember that song. Yeah, this is good enough for the win here.
2) Marvin Gaye- A pretty good effort. Not good enough for #1, but a good effort all the same.
3) Bob Dylan- Yeah, it's Bob Dylan alright.
But "Chinese suit"? "I took his flute"? Really? What is that even supposed to mean?
Still , the music was okay, and that lifts it above the line.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
4) The Troggs- You could easily dub the lyrics of Wild Thing over this music and probably pass it off as a demo or something.
Their problem here is that I never put Wild Thing or the Troggs on any sort of altar.
5) Tom Waits- At least he got rid of his "I just gargled with glass" voice that so many people seem to think is great but which makes me place him lower than Dylan on my "People who can't sing" list.
I was ready to put this over the Troggs but then it ended.
Heck, I think that I could sing like that for just over a minute if I had to.
6) Kings of Leon- A little reminder why I do not listen to much new stuff anymore.
Is this "rock"? Is it "pop"?
I can think of a few words that I would use to describe it, but "good" doesn't appear anywhere on the list.
7) Elvis Costello- Ah, yes. An almost constant cellar-dweller on my rankings, here is Elvis making another appearance.
He had better shape up, though. Kings of Leon almost took it away from him.

I'm trying to rank these but Marvin gaye is giving me grief.

1. Bob Dylan - Greatest lyricist ever.
2. Marvin Gaye - Excelente
3. Tom Waits - Now here's a guy who's got a voice that you have to get used to.
4. The Troggs - Good garage rock.
5. Kings Of Leon - My daughter likes these guys and I do too.
6. Savage Garden - tolerable
7. Elvis Costello - I have never liked this guy. I didn't like his surly attitude from his early years and I've never been that fond of his music overall.

The Troggs - Sorry. I just really, really dig this old school, classic rock stuff. Yes, it also reminded me of Wild Thing, but to me that is not a bad thing.
Bob Dylan - Wow! Bob Dylan not sounding depressed or pissed off. Great stuff.
Elvis Costello - Could've easily been #2. Ranked it below Dylan because Dylan's song was more fun to listen to.
Tom Waits - This would've ranked higher, but I usually demand more than 1:19 from a good song.
Marvin Gaye - Forget the lyrics - just enjoy that funked up music!
Kings of Leon - I like Kings of Leon. This isn't their best work, but it was good
--------------------------------------------------------------
Savage Garden - I'm sure there are some who dig this...I'm not one of them.

1. Bob Dylan
2. Savage Garden
3. Troggs
4. Marvin Gaye
5. Tom Waits
6. Kings of Leon
7. Elvis Costello
Hmm. I think this is the first time I've been familiar with all seven artists before I start. Not necessarily familiar with the songs though, so let's see...
1) Tom Waits - Simple, good voice, lovely little gem.
2) Bob Dylan - I do quite like Bob Dylan and this was a good song. I'd be surprised if this isn't in the top half by the time I finish.
3) Savage Garden - I grew up on 90s indy music so this was playing to the right audience here.
4) Elvis Costello - Bleak. Very bleak. Beautiful in a way but very, very bleak...
5) The Troggs - Well it's very Troggs! A little too reminiscent of Wild Thing to really get any higher than this. Still enjoyable.
6) Marvin Gaye - I'm not a big Motown fan, but this was another good track. It's lowish position is just testament to the others.
7) Kings of Leon - Hmm. Not quite getting this one, which is a shame since I like some of their other songs. Picks up in the chorus, but that's not quite enough.
Hmm. Lots of great stuff here. 6 out of 7 I would gladly listen to again, which is a good hit rate for me.
1) Danko Jones (Yeah, not on the list, but it should be)

Okay, now I'll rank the ones actually on there
1) Savage Garden - More for the nostalgia than the song itself. That song brings back memories
2) Kings of Leon
3) Marvin Gaye
4) Elvis Costello
5) The Troggs
6) Tom Waits
7) Bob Dylan
Waits and Dylan are in the same category for me. Songs would be so much better if sung by other people. Just don't like their voices. They grate on me.

1) Danko Jones (Yeah, not on the list, but it should be)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StjwV2ZkO5o
Danko Jones' version was one of the final three songs to be cut from the competition.
1. Bob Dylan -- a track from "Blonde on Blonde" and suddenly, I'm back on MacDougal Street, getting a sausage sandwich before heading over to the House of Oldies. Oh, look...hey, there's Al Kooper now...
2. Tom Waits --- here's ol' Tom for all the dismissive folks who've never really heard him. My only regret here is that it's half as long as it should be...
3. The Troggs --- I'd read their name in a British magazine sometime before I ever heard "Wild Thing" on NY radio and when I heard it, somehow I just knew this had to be The Troggs based on THAT sound...and here it is again...different title, maybe, but same sound...
4. Marvin Gaye --- with all due respect to Smokey, Stevie, David and Levi...Marvin was Mr. Motown to me...
5. Elvis Costello --- only because I like the next two less...
6. Savage Garden -- well, only because I like the next one even less...
7. Kings of Leon --- because as the guy standing in his neighbor's bedroom closet, wearing only his underwear, said to the husband when he opened the closet door: "Everybody's got to be some place!"

1. Tom Waits - Gorgeous in its simplicity.
2. Bob Dylan - The man has a way with lyrics. They may not always make sense, but they make you take notice.
3. Savage Garden - It's infectious. There you go.
4. Elvis Costello - The first minute had a simple folkiness that I really, really enjoyed. Oddly it worked against it overall. I liked the whole song, but after the first minute, the rest of the song was kind of a letdown. Had I not had that letdown feeling, had it started right in at the 60 second mark insted, I would have been more favorably disposed to it. On a second listen, I did move it up in the ranks to #4. Might even have gone higher if the top three slots weren't so solid.
5. Marvin Gaye - I liked this but not enough to put is higher on the list. Still hard to go wrong with Marvin Gaye though.
6. The Troggs - It's like they were thinking Wild Thing did so well, let's just change the chords a little and write new words and rerelease it.
7. Kings of Leon - In every one of these, there seems to always be one song that lands solidly on the bottom for me, and this week is no exception. And there wasn't a single true rhyme in any of the lyrics. So there.
1. Savage Garden (Im not a SG fan by any means, but this is an enjoyable song to me)
2. Marvin Gaye (I liked it, what more can I say)
3. Kings of Leon (It was a decent enough song, I suppose)
4. The Troggs (Another OK song really)
5. Elvis Costello (Eh, it was OK, nothing special to me)
6. Tom Waits (Nah, not my thing, but it was short, so thats good)

7. Bob Dylan (Track is no longer on YT, and I couldnt find a non-cover of it there as well)

There was not one song I wouldn't listen to a second time. For me this was a great list of tunes and brought back memories of some songs I hadn't heard in a very long time.
Tom Waits – pure, simple and gave me chills up my spine. Sometimes beautiful can be as simple as looking into the eyes of your love, this song was easily that.
Marvin Gaye – I love Marvin’s music, and once this song gets going, it’s amazingly good.
Bob Dylan – Classic among Dylan songs.
Elvis Costello – It’s not Oliver’s Army, but then it wasn’t meant to be. Melancholy and darkly beautiful.
Savage garden – This is actually a great pop tune and is the kind of song you could hear Katy Perry releasing. Catchy and fun.
Troggs - Muddy goodness. Hi Seattle, try this sound out and see what you think.
Kings of Leon – I saw KoL when they opened for Pearl Jam and this song is not typical of how good they can be.
