Uncanny X-Men #23: Training Days, Part 1

Warren Worthington III pulled into the over-sized garage of the Xavier Mansion in his shiny new convertible, and found a group of people waiting for him. He pulled to a stop, jumped out of the car, and gave Professor Xavier a vigorous handshake.

“A receiving line, huh?” Angel said, looking at the group of people. It was all the original X-Men, plus one very attractive blonde standing next to Bobby. “Slim!” He shook Scott’s hand, while wondering why the blonde looked familiar. “You excited about the new training regimen?”

“I’m afraid I’ll have to miss it, at least for a while,” Scott said. “We’ve got a mission, an out-of-town one*.”

“Bummer, man. I’ve been looking forward to the prospect of putting you through the ringer for a change.”

“Looks like you’ll just have to wait a while,” Scott said, not sounding very disappointed.

“Bobby!” Warren said, and then returned his attention to the blonde, regarding her more closely. “That’s it!” He exclaimed, as recognition set in. “You’re Alison Blaire! Hey Bob, I didn’t know she was your sister.”

“She’s not,” Bobby said, as Alison took hold of his hand.

“Wow. Gotta say, I’m impressed. You’ve come a long way since the old days of Zelda and Vera.”

“Ah, Vera,” Beast waxed whimsically beside him, “Those truly were the days of wine and roses. Or, coffee and beat poets, I suppose.”

“Hank?” Warren asked, looking with disbelief at his furry friend, “You’ve certainly changed. I told you that Rogaine stuff would cause problems.”

“And how we’ve missed your incisive wit,” Hank replied dryly.

“Jean!” Warren ignored Hank and swept Jean up in an enthusiastic hug. “You, on the other hand, haven’t changed a bit!”

“I have,” Jean said, “More than you know.”

“Well, anyway, it’s great to see all you guys again. So, when do we start the boot camp?”

All of the X-Men were assembled in the briefing room (except those who had gone out on mission with Cyclops) as Warren walked up to the front, with Forge and Nightcrawler flanking him. He had his old costume on, and had his wings “flexed” a little, spread out behind him in what he hoped would be an impressive display. He wasn’t used to playing drill sergeant, but quickly found he liked the feeling of authority it engendered.

“For those of you who don’t know me,” he began, “my name is Warren Worthington, or Angel when I’m in costume. I’ve been asked to come here to oversee an increased training regimen, to improve conditioning and readiness. As some of you may know, I was one of the original five X-Men.” In fact, he was the only one of the originals not currently active, but he didn’t think it was the right time to say so; he had his reasons for
retirement. “When the five of us started, the Professor worked us very hard in training; in fact, we spent a long time in the Danger Room before we ever went out on a single mission. In light of recent events,” though he didn’t say it, everyone in the room knew that he was referring to the death of Jamie Madrox in a recent battle with monstrous aliens,*

“Professor Xavier thought it was time to bring back a more rigorous training program that ensures each of you will be fully prepared for any danger you might face out there. To that effect, I’m going to be taking each of you to hell and, hopefully, back.”

Angel looked over the room, studying the reactions to the dramatic pronouncement. Charles believed that they were all prepared for this, but that was something they’d have to decide for themselves. “Your days of getting by just on the fact that you have some ‘super power’ are over; each of you is going to have to earn it.

“Here’s the basic layout of the training program. The Danger Room will be partitioned into six parts so that six of you at a time can individually engage in what I like to call ‘Hazard Avoidance Training.’ You’ll be in the Danger Room alone, and something will come out of the walls, or floor or ceiling. It might be a laser, or a wrecking ball, or even a jet of flame, for those who can handle it. Whatever it is, your goal is simply to avoid it. You don’t even have to worry about disabling it, though that certainly wouldn’t help. It’s basic survival training, with all the resources of the Danger Room against you.

“Each of you will do that for a ten minute shift, and then spend ten minutes doing calisthenics, weight training, wind sprints, however we feel like torturing you at the time. You get a five minute rest, and then it’s back to the Danger Room. If you’ve survived the last round, the difficulty level will be increased. Sound simple enough?” The X-Men nodded or mumbled acknowledgment. A couple appeared to be excited, but for the
most part, they had become somewhat apprehensive.

“We’ll be doing this for at least a few hours a day, every day for the foreseeable future, for everyone who’s not currently on a mission. And let me just add that, while everything the X-Men does is voluntary, this will be mandatory for anyone intending to have field duty. Which is why the three of us won’t be participating in active missions, since we’ll be overseeing the training instead of taking part in it. So, if there aren’t any questions, let’s get started.”

About three hours later, a group of very tired X-Men gathered in a section of the Danger Room, nursing aching muscles and sore limbs. The six-way partition had been removed in favor of just one wall separated the room into two halves. The X-Men who had been sent there were sitting, squatting, or leaning against the wall, wondering what new tortures were in store for them.

“Even I’ve never run that much,” Quicksilver groaned, “And that’s really saying something.”

“At first I thought he was cute,” Marvel Girl said, looking up at Angel in the observation room. “But now I’d just really like to throw a fireball at him.”

“I’d probably dodge it,” Angel replied through a microphone, and Rachel winced as she realized the Danger Room was wired for sound, “Because I’ve had all that Hazard Avoidance training. But you’re all done with that for the moment. Now, there’ll be a little group exercise, more like the training you’ve been doing all along; let’s see how you do when you’re already worn out from the other exercises. Some enemies will come out of that door there, and all you have to do is defeat them by any means necessary. Then we can think about lunch.”
