View Full Version : Precision dice anyone?

I have currently been doing research in cheap precision dice and I am now doing my last piece of research: finding my customers!
Let me say first thing that this is 100% legal, and that these dice are only special in that they are casino precision (so no superheroes).
Anyway, what I have to offer are 3 kinds of dice: 99% precision casino dice that start retail at $4 retail, 99.9% precision casino dice that start retail of $7.50, and 99.9% precision backgammon dice that start retail at $15.
I figure that we could do a set of 90% and 99.9% casino dice, but the backgammon are just too much (backgammon have rounded edges, casino have straight).
Now, there are several different colors: red, blue, green, and amber (with black and white for the 99.9% ones too).
It will be better to just pick 1 color, as I will need to order 1000 of each color to get a discount. That said, I will not be ordering any unless I get orders for 1000+ dice.
So, if you are interested in purchasing either the 99% or the 99.9% dice, let me know, let me know what color you do NOT want, and let me know what you would be willing to pay. I will making up my own discount schedule for these soon, but I would like to get some info from you guys before I post it. I will most likely be taking orders soon, but I might let this simmer for a week or so.
Anyway, just post here your answers to my questions, and let's get this ball rolling!

Precision dice....in other words, less likely to be weighted?
Sorry, I'm just not that familiar with the term.

Sorry, I'm just not that familiar with the term.
Regular mass produced dice are unequal, and tend to fall on certain numbers more than others. That's why every gamer talks about 'lucky' or 'cursed' dice.
Precision dice, like casino dice, are truly random.

Agreed.
This is why I have me some WikiPedia:
Precision casino dice, used for the game of craps, may have a polished finish, making them transparent, or a sand finish, making them translucent. Casino dice have their pips drilled, and then filled flush with a paint of the same density as the acetate used for the dice, such that the dice remain in balance. In casino play, a stick of 5 dice is used, all stamped with a matching serial number to prevent a cheater from substituting a die.
Ignatz_Mouse

They're more fair. Most dice have rounded corners from being put in a rock polisher to remove the paint used for pips-- they don't wear 100% evenly in the polisher. To make matters worse, having rounded edges means they roll more, and are more likely to find a biased side (if they have one).
In terms of clix percentages, it probably doesn't affect games in any significant way, but the precision dice *are* scientifically more fair.

Yup, precision means not weighted. I have 99% precise and 99.9% precise.

Gamers would talk about lucky or cursed dice even with 100% fair dice. Human nature to see patterns where there aren't any.

Absolutely true, but that doesn't change the fact that a badly made die can tend toward certain numbers ;)

Sorry about the derail Chi.
I've been mulling over switching to precision dice after seeing a ranting crazy man explain precision dice in a video.
It's hard for an old gamer such as myself to give up on the bag of gnarled old dice I've used for decades, but I'm very tempted.
Should I take the plunge I'll be sure and post.

Do they have sharp corners? I've gotten some that are casino precision dice and I just can't use them anymore because they put "pock marks" all over my maps and really chew them up.

The casino dice do have sharp corners. Backgammon dice have rounded, but are a lot more expensive.
Here (https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AtI07vhn0KHydHZsQ1N3cTdzeFRMMVNxOEJ5bnU2SWc&output=html) is a possible discount schedule for these dice. Ask any questions if you need to.
I will be selling these in quantities of 2's and 5's, but if you want some random number like 13, just use the same price as the number above it (yes the more expensive one).

There is no garauntee that I will be able to make this order happen, but if you plan on making an order, post it there, but if you don't plan on making an order, please don't post there. I don't need people making orders and then bailing on me.

I'm assuming I read this correctly and it says $4.00 per die ($8.00 per pair) and getting cheapest at $2.75 per die ($5.50 per pair) at higher quantities.
That is doable, but I was really hoping for some backgammon dice. $15 a die seems to be the cheapest I've ever found for those also, and it seems no discount for them exists...
If everyone else is ordering, I'll take two sets of whatever. I don't care what color. ;)

There is a discount for them at 1000, but I would rather keep it to 2 different options (one being a cheeper option) so that I can reach the discount easier. Keep in mind that I cannot order these at discount until I get 1000 dice.

For comparison sake, how big were the other dice from the custom run?
Also, I'll order a pair. I'd prefer Blue or Green but I'll order whatever the majority goes with as I'd imagine white or black or red will win out.

At the moment, I am leaning toward green for the 99.9 dice. It also seems that most people are willing to pay the extra $1.50 for a more precise die, so i may drop the other one completely. Let me know if this would bother you.
This has, of course, been up for one day, and this could very well change. Make sure to tell your lcs today about this deal, and bring a printout of my discount schedule in case they want bulk.

So far I have twelve 99.9 dice claimed (so long as they are black) but no one has shown interest in the 99 dice on the blog post yet, but I have gotten a lot of interest with no real number attached. I would like to move a little faster, as the faster it moves the less time the early birds will have to wait.
Also, some regular bumping will be nice.

So at the bottom of my OP in my blog, I will keep a monetary goal for both kinds of dice. Currently, after the handful of orders I have so far, I will need $5,025 until we can order the 99.9 dice, and I have not received any orders for the 99 dice, so that is still at $2,750. Both values are what it would cost me to place the minimum order less what I have been pledged so far. I have only gotten 1 request for a "must" color so far, and that is Black. If black is a deterrent to your order, then I will tentatively switch it back to green, but if black does not affect whether or not you will buy, then that is the color of choice at the moment.

interesting new development. I may be able to work with an ebay seller to get a large quantity of random actual casino dice. The dice would be sold in pairs, but I would have no say in what the dice looked like. That said, I could sell pairs for $5 shipped if this works out (and probably stick with $1.50 per dice with a $2 domestic, $4 international shipping fee). I am waiting to hear back from him about this, but he currently sells quantities of 20 for $20 ~weekly with a $7 shipping. I am going to see if he can sell like 100+ $1 ea but also for just $7 shipping. Otherwise, I can sell them to you guys for $2-$2.50 per die and just constantly buy from him week from week and sell them in lower quantities to you guys. Sorry for the radio silence this past week.

I'm keeping track of this, but thus far, I'm thinking I'll "Bite the Bullet" and save up for a pair or two of Precision Backgammon Dice. I just really don't care for square corner dice rolling on the maps and my venue is limited in space as it is (no dice tray to roll in...).
Maybe if the price is right, I'll join in. As I said, I'll be poking around and watching the thread.

Still no word from the ebay seller. I might just start being a regular customer of his and buy them when I see them. I can spot the $27 for the first order, but it may be a little more expensive (like a dollar or 2) for you guys. I may put together a new discount schedule similar to the first one, where it will be like $7 for 1 pair ($2.50 per die, then $2 shipping), and $10 for 2 pair ($2 per die, then $2 shipping), then drop to $1.75 per die, then $1.50 etc. I will have to work it out like I did last time, but I may limit it to 4 pair per order if I can only get 10 pair at a time, and if I can only get them in pairs, then i will only sell them in pairs.
I am going to reboot the blog post when I get these numbers figured out, but does look like something doable? Get a random pair of used casino dice at a discount? I have to charge more than I want because the ebay seller is ripping me off on shipping (it costs under $2 to ship 20 dice, and he is charging $7) so I have to cover my self. Also, I need to make some back so I can further fund this more. That alright with everyone?
ChiRocker
10/15/2010, 09:14
Ok, so this is what I have come up with for prices (shipped):
$5 for 1 pair
$9 for 2 pair
$12 for 3 pair
$14 for 4 pair
$15 for 5 pair
I don't have the freedom to really split up pairs, so no more 5 dice increments. I would like a few people to order before I front the cash for the first 20 dice, and I expect this to all be a quick turnaround process. Please be willing to pay within a week of ordering, and make an effort to check out my blog frequently (linked in my signature). This can go as long as we want it to, and it won't be as exciting as custom dice, but what really is?

Sounds promising. All the numbers have confused me so I'll wait for a complete menu, but I'd be in the "market" for 2 to 5 pair of dice, depending on cost. And I like the varying colors since I'd like my players to be able to tell the difference between them.
Edit: How would you take payment?

5 different pairs are fine. I wouldn't want to mess up collation.
If you find some oddball colors - say a lone yellow and a lone pearl, I'd take those as well. I don't know if they are all guaranteed to have a matching set.
