View Full Version : Same Name / Different Song - No. 72 Tragedy

A while ago we had another musical showdown that featured songs with the same name but different writers/performers. They were one-offs and not done in conjunction with the Rock Wars. Please listen to all the songs, even the ones that you haven't necessarily heard before and then pick your favorites. Some songs may only have two competitors and some may have as many as four or five or six or even seven max. I'll try to weed out the pretenders from the contenders.

Our 72nd match-up is TRAGEDY (with thanks to Surfer13 for this title).

As usual, there are a lot of songs on this one, but this will make for a nice time killer while you're working or blogging or whatever it is you do. Just sit back and listen. Give each song a chance, and then decide.

The last matchup featured the song Liar and was won by Argent. They beat out a mostly good group of artists except for Kreamed Korn who got beat like pinata at a Cinco de Mayo get together.

In the immortal words of DTM - "So what say you all?" Who will be the winner in this latest match-up of Same Name/Different Song? Rank the songs from favorite to least favorite as there's a points system to decide winners & losers. Also, if you like, put in comments about the songs - good or bad, it's all cool.

I had been hoping to find the Legs Diamond song called Tragedy. I think our Metal Mavens would have like them.

Ahem!

1. Argent - Awesome song. Love this band. Their whole inventory should be available on CD, rather then best ofs only.

2. Belinda Carlile - Nice song that conveys a sense of tragedy very well.

3. Hanoi Rocks - Nothing special but listenable.

4. The Wipers - See above.

5. The Bee Gees - I came into this thinking this would be higher but -- bleh!

6. ArcAngels - More Bleh!

7. Marc Anthony - Oh My God! I have to see the doctor tomorrow after listening to this! I can't stop my ears from bleeding.

1. BeeGees
2. Argent
3. Hanoi Rocks
4. Wipers
5. Brandi Carlile
6. ArcAngel
7. Marc Anthony

While I don't like criticising music, most of these made me wonder about the Tragedy of releasing these songs.

1.) Hanoi Rocks - I don't even like this band, but I really, really liked this song. A very pleasant surprise.
2.) Wipers - Again, not a band that I have any love for, but a great song anyway.
3.) Bee Gees - wait...what? The Bee Gees? Rated this high? With a disco song? Who knew?
4.) Argent - I'd never heard this track so maybe my expectations were too high when I started the video. But I really expected more than what I got here.
5.) Marc Anthony - not bad, really. I won't cry if I never hear it again, but it wasn't too bad.
------------------------------------------------
6.) Brandi Carlisle - boring song. Just dull.
7.) Arcangel - horrible group. Its funny though, how your attitudes change about things when you become the father of 4 very, very underage daughters. Gd long haired hippie better keep his whiney-### hands to himself or I shall deliver upon him a Tragedy of Biblical proportions!

Not really a fan of any of these tracks, but here goes.

Wiper-- Best of a bad batch. I like the raw sound, if it's a little undistinguished.

Brandi Carlisle-- little bit simplistic (seems my number one complaint about most music is boring/cliche/generic) but it sounds nice enough. I want to list Argent higher, but I enjoyed this more even if the Argent song is probably a "better" one.

Argent-- never heard of these guys before the last challenge, and here they are again with another solid song. Don't like this one as much, but I do dig that pre-funk groove. I wonder what these guys would sound like with modern production.

Hanoi Rocks-- Hard to put my finger on why I put this here. It seems like it's not so far away from being something I would like. It grew on me as I listened.

ArcAngel-- generic 80's movie soundtrack music? Not in a good way, but more laughable than offensive.

BeeGees-- the only song I knew going in. Not a fan of the singing. As I've grown older I've come to appreciate disco somewhat, but I still don't like the BeeGee's singing at all. And I don't think this is even as good as some of their other stuff.

Marc Anthony-- wanted to list this last before I heard anything else. This is my kind of musical Kryptonite. 4/4, synthy, repertitive, simplistic musically and banal lyrics, with warbling. Only falsetto could make it worse.

Aww, I was hoping that Front 242's Tragedy (for You) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4oFcaVY8iQ) would have made the cut.

1. Bee Gees (Easily the best here, and the first song I thought of when I saw this as Tragedy)
2. Brandi Carlile (An enjoyable little tune)
3. Marc Anthony (It was an OK song, not horrible, but nothing special either)
4. ArcAngel (Kinda blah, nothing special)
5. Argent (these songs are getting more annoying as I go down the list)
6. Hanoi Rocks (Once again, nothing special)
7. Wipers (Loud and annoying for me)

Well, this was a surprise.

I saw the song title and thought, "Well, here we go with Thomas Wayne and the DeLons"...only to find they were nowhere to be found. Not that I love it, but I'll admit I'm just a bit curious about that one...since it was a hit single, albeit a 1959 one.

Anyway...among the choices I did find...

1. Argent

2. Brandi Carlile --- and I don't even like Grey's Anatomy.

3. Marc Anthony --- O.K., my guilty pleasure for this thread.

4. Bee Gees

5. Wipers

6. Hanoi Rocks

7. ArcAngel

The choices were ultimately mine.
I selected what I wanted, then in order to fill the slots I looked at what I thought others may like.

As I listened to Thomas Wayne (and a cover of his original), I simply didn't think that it was particularly noteworthy, nor did I think that many other people would find it so, so I left it out.
Maybe I was wrong, but there is always room for second guessing. I think that I had to leave five songs out, and like VG said, there was another song that he couldn't track down a video for.

Anyway, on to my selections...

1) ArcAngel- One of two songs that I knew I wanted to include here.

2) Hanoi Rocks- And they do.

3) Bee Gees- The other song that I knew would have to be here going in.

4) Marc Anthony- Sure, it's nothing great, and ultimately forgettable, but it doesn't totally suck, either. I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
5) Brandi Carlile- I only included it because I figured that some people might like it. I certainly don't.

6) Argent- This just isn't good. It's too noisy for me.

7) The Wipers- If a little time passes after listening, I think maybe I can rate this one or two slots higher, but then I listen again and yeah, it's the worst of the lot.
I was willing to punt these last two, but I guess VG didn't want to bite.

Wipers - Not a great song but handily the best of an iffy group. I dig the DIY feel and the sold punk riffs, I could see myself listening to this song again on purpose.

Hanoi Rocks - This seemed a bit silly to me at first but I have to admit I dug the melodic chorus. I would be interested in hearing some pre or post hair rock stuff from these guys.

Argent - An okay tune, non-aggressively funky enough to be neither here nor there.

ArcAngel - I would not say this was good, but I have to admit that it was fun in a goofy 80's pop song kind of way.

BeeGees - Even though I am a vocal opponent of disco I have to admit to loving Night Fever. This is no Night Fever.

Brandi Carlile - I am generally a fan of folky stuff, but this was bad.

Marc Anthony - If you aren't even going to try to do anything remotely musically or lyrically interesting why even bother? What is the point of even releasing something like this? I guess to make money but that leads me to a whole other list of questions about the complacency of the listening public that I would rather not think about.

1) Wipers. Jumps in at the end to grab it. Not good but the best of a bad bunch.
2) Brandi Carlile - Again, not good, but just crept over the others.
3) BeeGees - As if to prove how bad a selection it was for me, I'm ranking the BeeGees at third. The BeeGees at third! I, who snickered at KYTV's spoof version, the HeeBeeGeeBees with their song 'Meaningless Songs In Very High Voices'. Sad day.
4) Argent - Not as good as the other Argent track from the other week.
5) Hanoi Rocks - A bit too 'blah'. Nothing special.
6) ArcAngel - Leaves me cold.

-) Marc Anthony - "This video contains content from Vevo, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds." I am apparently legally forbidden from judging this one...

The Wipers – Holy Eddie and the Hot Rods meets The Stranglers Batman! I found a clear numero uno. Sometimes less is more and a lot of punk rock/new wave bands certainly had figured that out. This is a pretty cool tune and I probably would have listened to this a bunch of times in my own skinny tie phase. I like the melodic attitude of the song and how they never seemed to take themselves for granted.
Hanoi Rocks – I was so turned on by the singer, I mean, I just have the hots for Hillary Duff. Wait, that was Michael Monroe? Now I know how quagmire felt when he found out that Taylor Hanson was a guy. I actually like Hanoi Rocks and have listened to them before. The songs rocks and doesn’t get over-pretentious. Still after 6 songs, there’s not a clear #1 yet for me, but unless the Wipers song gets that distinction, then HR is gonna be my #1 here.
Argent – WTF!!! Was this Russ Ballard inventing the disco guitar scratch? This was a weird song wanting to be funky and rocking all at once. It worked for Michael Jackson a few years later, but I think I wouldn’t want to hear this again on purpose.
Brandi Carlile – Here’s another song that I was liking up to a certain point. And then she even started doing the falsetto thing. I’m beginning to think that the tragedy of these tunes is that everyone wants to sing in coloratura soprano pitches and that’s just wrong! I know it’s an overexaggaerattion, but you get the point.
Bee Gees – Not a fan of this song, but so far through the first four tunes, it’s the only one that’s recognizable. Barry’s voice is as good at that high falsetto as anyone’s, but unless it’s Franki Valli, I’m not a fan. This song also loses points for not being pre-Saturday Night Fever Bee Gees.
ArcAngel – This song starts with the slightly higher pitched vocals that I started to dislike immensely from every hair-band wannabes. I wasn’t sure the song was going anywhere, but they did get to the obligatory metal chorus where the band lines up and does the bend forward and then backwards and throw our hair back. For me, this was meh for a hair band tune. Give me Dokken and George Lynch please.
Marc Anthony – The fact that he’s a part owner of the Miami Dolphins will have no bearing how this NY Jets fan ranks him. Yeah, right. The song does have a nice latin flavor, but that’s not my thing and I’ve heard much better from guys like Carlos Santana who put a lot more effort into their tunes.

I admit to wanting Thomas Wayne on this list too and now that I see I’ve used a Batman reference, it makes perfect sense, BUT, what I really enjoyed about this group of songs was the challenge it presented. Except for the Bee Gees there was no song I can remember hearing before, and that made me listen more intently to each artist. Then again, it’s the morning and I just had a big cup of coffee so I might be rambling…

Let's rank 'em!

Bee Gees (Okay, so I'm not the only person ranking them this high. Working in a '70s and '80s theme bar means that you learn to appreciate selections from the Brothers Gibb that *aren't* Night Fever. Because you have to hear that song four times a night - seriously, that was mandate of the management.)

Wipers (Nice raw little slice of post punk.)

Brandi Carlile (Eh, I'm a fan of female singer-songwriters, but this doesn't really do a whole lot to set itself apart.)

Argent (If this isn't an off-8-track recording, it very much should be.)

ArcAngel (Ooh, falsetto metal voice or shouty metal voice? Which will it be? Huh. Sort of a vaguely Kevin Cronin/guy from .38 Special-esque mix of the two. I don't think this song was on the Rocky IV soundtrack, but it totally should have been.)

Hanoi Rocks (Metal harmonies? The heck? Guess these guys are cursed to forever be a footnote in the Motley Crue episode of "Behind the Music." In case you missed it, Vince Neil got all kinds of drunk, crashed his car, and killed their drummer. Yeah, I loved that show.)

Marc Anthony (You know, I wasn't sure what exactly a pop song from a Puerto Rican vampire would sound like. Given that kind of origin, it's not nearly as interesting as one would think.)

Brandi Carlile (Eh, I'm a fan of female singer-songwriters, but this doesn't really do a whole lot to set itself apart.)

This sums up my feelings about the song exactly.

Re: Hanoi Rocks-- I knew almsot nothing about the band and was about to write tehm off as bad hair metal, but the harmony grew on me. Makes me think that these contests might be interesting to do blind.

This group of songs was fun to review. A couple good, a few bad, but a big diversity of style and talent. I truly do enjoy all kinds of music, and at the end, my rankings surprised me (see disco Bee Gees, Marc Anthony, Wipers). But the fun is in the honest appraisals, so here goes!

1-Hanoi Rocks- Yesssss! Just as I was losing hope in this comparison, this song kickstarts my heart. Wish I was there live with a beer in hand and the night looming ahead. I think I need to own this!!
2-Argent- The more I hear Argent songs, the more I like them. Rocking, nice harmonies and keyboards. Like this song.
3-Bee Gees- I will admit to a prejudice against disco in general, as I have always blamed disco for what I felt was a dark age of music in the 80's. Of course the fact that my ex-wife played nothing but disco and hated all my favorites probably had an influence. That said, I recognize the talent and didn't hate listening to it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
4-Marc Anthony- Not a bad song. Commercial, slick, pretty women in the video. Very listenable, very forgettable.
5-ArcAngel- I don't really know ArcAngel. Pleasant enough, but very formularic (is that a word?), Hair Band Lite, Plan 9, insert guitar solo at 2:20.
6-Wipers- Although I appreciate the influence Wipers had on Nirvana and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (both favorites), to me this song is pretty much a jumbled mess. Bits and pieces that don't really add up. My grandson is just three months old, and I fully expect to be listening to him performing something like this in about 12 years.
7-Brandi Carlile- There are VERY few songs that I hate. Almost four minutes of my life that i will never get back. Times a wasting, and my ears are still suffering.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Surfer13 again.

I wanted to rep your choice of songs. Interesting, diverse. Some sucked, but some were really good, and you gave us a lot to comment on. Good job, and thanks!

Whoops. Almost forgot to chime in on this one. Deliberately not reading the rest of the thread until I can put my own thoughts down.

1. Brandi Carlile - I'm a sucker for acoustic and there are some cool vocal harmonies. Very pretty and heart-tugging.

2. Marc Anthony - At the risk of being banned from these threads, I have to admit that I enjoyed this. But then I like songs with a little Latin flavor. I could certainly listten to this again.

3. Bee Gees - Not my favorite Bee Gees. Probably could have been higher had it not gone on a little too long.

4. Hanoi Rocks - A little hard for my personal taste, but really not bad.

5. Argent - Argent tries for two in a row, but they're not going to get it with this song, sorry. DIdn't care for this one that much at all.

6. ArcAngel - Not really my style, but it was still decent enough. Nothing real memorable though.

7. Wipers - Not the worst song ever to fall into the last slot, but I really don't feel any compulsion to listen to it again either.
