View Full Version : Would you prefer precision dice to biased dice?

If you could get your hands on precision dice (casino dice that have been tested to show no bias to any and 1 side) would you use those instead of any other dice that may have a slight bias, even though that bias may never show up when you are rolling (your die might have a tendency to roll toward a 3, but out of 36 rolls, it may land on the 3 seven or eight times instead of six at it would under perfect distribution).

If you would, how much much you be willing to spend on 1 pair of dice? Would you be interested in buying multiple pair, or would 1 be enough? Would color be an issue?

Several people on here have shown interest in this topic, and as the realms' resident roller, I have been doing my best to make this happen for them, but I could use some more info from the general population to help make this happen. Thanks for your input.

No. I like my dice just fine.

I enjoy the fact that dice have 'personality'. Maybe its their color, shape, number font, weight/balance or whatever but I prefer a die that is an individual to one that is generic. But thanks for asking, I love to talk about dice!

Vegas dice are designed for a felt cloth and and crap table back bounce board.

The pointy edges are not so good on firm tables with no give. Too may they sound and feel clunky outside of the Crap table

I like to switch out my dice every now and again. I still use my Mech Warrior Swordsworn & Spirit Cats dice all the time. Since I grew up traveling I've amassed a collection of decks of casino cards & dice. Dunno how many dice I actually have, I even have the Spiral Crystal dice I picked up eight years back.

The Casino dice with their corners aren't bad for the maps, not really. Now the brass dice & other assorted metal ones or the stupid 6 inch cubed dice a player brought in one time... Now those dice were horrid, and he wanted to roll them on the table. It was the only time I was ready to DQ someone for their dice.

During two games yesterday I hit 3 times in the first game, and none the second game... Unless you count the time I hit myself with a critical miss that killed my Red Hulk. I immediatly went to the front of the store and bought some precision dice that I rolled a few dozen times and they seemed pretty random. Needless to say I have been less than happy with my recent rolls.

Tuesday during a 2nd ed DND I played my half giant fighter and only hit once, rolling 2 1's and 3 2's in the process. So I just hope precision dice fix this.

It really bothers me to see people misunderstand probability like that. Precision dice don't mean that if you roll 36 times in a game, you will get one 2, two 3s, three 4s, etc. along the standard distribution. It means that, down to the most precise measure the dice industry uses, a dice roll will have an equal chance of being a 1 as a 6. While being completely random and unbiased, it is still entirely likely that you will spend the majority of your game missing.

If you can roll your dice over and over, documenting the results, and find no glaring abnormality (and that, to be precise, would require mathematical computation involving standard deviations and determination of outliers), then your dice are random enough.

I don't believe in Precision Dice being a significant improvement on my life, just as I wouldn't find setting every clock in my house to the same second significant.

I don't misunderstand the concept, I was just trying to be efficient. If every game you roll 36 times and every game you have a tendency to roll the 3 once or twice more than usual, then that can add up over years of playing. precision dice aren't the end all, but I know that some people feel comfort in the fact that they are more likely to get even distribution over the long haul with their dice.

I plan to pick up some casino dice in Vegas next week, so I'll use 'em in clix when I get back and post the results.

I have always wanted to use precision dice. I don't use them because they can ruin maps. I will stick with my Green Lantern dice that can roll well and badly at the same time.

I prefer dice that do not insist on rolling a 5 when all I need is a 6. A 6 is NOT too much to ask of a pair of dice.

Other than that, I'm not too terribly picky.

I was mainly responding to Grategy and the notion of, "I missed a lot, but precision dice will fix that..."

some "precision" dice can fix anything =0

I like to have alot of dice. I do prefer dice with personality like my watchmen dice, but a pair or two of precision dice are cool as well.

I have and currently use casino dice. I have 3 pair that I switch between. I like them and have used them since I started playing heroclix from the beginning.

I misspoke. I meant that I'm HOPING precision dice will fix that. My dice are anything but random. Last week I was playing and rolled 4 4's in a row and all I needed was a five. I didn't mean it like precision dice are a god send and will be game winning.

I have had the worst luck with dice lately. Just ask Thugit. I HAVE to try something to even things out. My order is on it's way.

My thoughts exactly. Its a desperate grasp for some release from the aw-fail rolls.

I had HORRIBLE luck with dice.... At one MD Mega game all I could seem to roll was three's even my opponent was astonished. So I've been thru a few pairs since then but I finally decided to look into a pair of precision dice, but the pair I chose were not the pointy ones everyone does not like. I purchased Precision Backgammon Dice with the rounded corners, and I can say they are completely random and don't mess up paper maps or Leather backgammon boards.

I'd highly recommend trying them, I got the amber ones like these

Do you know where to get these at a reasonable price? All I can seem to find are 1 pair for $30.

Hopefully this is not breaking the forum rules....

I got mine here http://www.michellibackgammon.com/dice.php for $12.50 a pair...

I got the 1/2" and they are a little small, If I had it to do again I'd get the 9/16"

I did get my hands on dice like this, and I do.
