Team Review: Dark Avengers!

Care Bears . . . STARE!!!
Teams are back in Web of Spiderman! Not only did we get awesome teams like the U-Foes and X-Force, but we got core members of the Thunderbolts-turned Avengers! The Dark Avengers offers great flexibility and a fantastic powerhouse roster that incorporates figures from several different recent sets. While this article will focus on the Web of Spiderman Dark Avengers, we'll also dig through our tackle boxes to highlight other key members of this team. So, come on in and let's begin!

I'm a sucker for Sinister teams like this. Thunderbolts, Dark X-Men, even DC's Suicide Squad and Secret Six. So, I am slapstick excited that we got more Dark Avengers in Web of Spiderman. But, how do they play? Well, for starters, unless you are playing 1100 pt games, squeezing in a few Dark Avengers on a 300pt squad is going to be difficult. I will have to offer a few variations on this team, and for this article, I will skip a couple of the older figs from review. So, to get your proverbial moment in the sun, Armor Wars Sentry, this shout-out is for you. Also, the good Dr. Karla Sofen from Critical Mass will also fail to appear, as Moonstone is just better, even if there isn't actually a character named 'Moonstone' in the Dark Avengers /semantics.

(Special) Unbalanced: Once at the beginning of the game roll a d6. On a roll of 3-4, put a sanity token on this card. On a roll of 5-6, you may choose to put a sanity token on this card.
(Speed) Alter Ego: Patriot of Goblin?: Give this character a power action. This this card has a sanity token, replace this character with a {ws}#039 Iron Patriot. If this card does not have a sanity token, replace this character with a {ws}#058 Green Goblin instead. Begin the replacement on its orange starting line. Existing action tokens from this character, as well as action token and pushing damage for this action are applied to the replacement. If replaced, no victory points are awarded for this character and the replacement is considered to be its orange point value for all game effects.
As good of a figure as this stoic patriot is, I won't recommend that you add him to your roster. He won't be doing much masterminding. However, in smaller builds where you are planning to break keyword theme anyway, throw in a couple of H.A.M.M.E.R. units and have Norman gobble up the competition. Sure, it'd be fun to suit up. But, I kinda like the idea of Gobby showing up out of nowhere end-game.

(Attack) Transforming Gauntlet Gun: Noh-Var can use Energy Explosion, Penetrating/Psychic Blast, and Pulse Wave.
(Special) Traitor to All: As you reveal your force, you may choose that Noh-Varr loses all keywords this game. If you do, modify his attack value by +1 this game.
Okay, really, who needs Iron Patriot anyway when you have this guy on your team? Unless you are playing the complete roster, then I really am hard pressed to find a reason to choose Iron Patriot over this steal of a dial. It's hard to find a good running shot/pulsewaver that doesn't fizzle out post firework. Noh-Varr will offer you mid-dial hypersonic, and your opponent will simply regret wasting the effort to get him off his top clicks.
Noh-Varr is a sweet team player. Even if you chose to lose your keywords, it is still small Penanceto pay, with that hefty increase in attack. Besides, another Dark Avengers ATA wielding team-mate can peg an opposing character down in defense. Then, Noh-Varr can still attack with that +2. If you miss that roll, then the dice gods hate you. One trick that was pointed out in another thread was to tack the ATA to Noh-Varr and have some energy exploding fun, making it easier for the rest of your team to hit the lowered defense of your opponent's cluster. Now, all I have to do is convince myself that Noh-Varr was actually part of team for more than a couple of issues.

Um. See above?
Okay, I suppose if you really like Damage reducers, and static poses, this is the fig to chose. Plus, he can really benefit from the Dark Avengers ATA, resulting in some decent damage output. But, leadership isn't going to help this team, unless you severely restrict your action allotment in higher point games. Outwit is useful, but isn't necessary as Norman or Moonstone can bring that power to the table. So, simply put, choose your Venom.

(Attack) Any Object A Weapon: Bullseye can pick up and use light objects as if he had Super Strength. If he hits with an attack using an object, after the attack is resolved; deal 1 penetrating damage to his target.
(Special) I Never Miss: Characters targeted by Bullseye can't use Shape Change or Super Senses.
Bull-Hawk-eye here is a pretty solid piece, fortunately he's costed appropriately. Imagine this dial with a 'Nightcrawler' type point cost. Shenanigans! If used skillfully, Bullseye is a monster, and against certain Spidery team builds, will simply shut them down. I hate playing against super-senses, and his trait, combined with the sharpshooter ability and range, is simply overpowering on the right map. Basing Bullseye won't do you much good as he'll turn into a close combat swordsman late dial, and you don't want him to land on his Perplex clix while he's on this team. Only his high point cost and potentially fatal first click defense keep him from being the new Captain America as well as Hawkeye.

(Damage) Web: Invasive Organic Webbing: Venom can use Penetrating/Psychic Blast as if he had a range of 6. If he hits, you may place a Web special terrain marker in his target's square after the action resolves.
Okay, color me confused. Why is the HoT Mac Gargan Venom so tiny? He should be huge. But, since he is so small, I'll usually use him and T-bolt to Skrulls, just so people hate me more. This team lacks in the tie-up department, that HoT Venom excels in.
Web of Spiderman Venom is more of a beater. This tiny spider isn't too bad, and he actually has the keyword, some range, and killing potential. So, pick your Mac attack. Do you want tie-up, or another bruiser? Sure, Venom was never bitten by anything Radioactive man, but he won't go down as easy as a Songbird. (Okay, I think that's all of the Thunderbolts from issue 110. Now, can we please focus on the rest of the article, kay thanks).

(Special) Smell Through Disguise: Opposing characters within 6 squares can't use Shape Change.
(Attack) Backstab: Modify Daken's damage value by +1 for each action token on the target of his attack.
What's the point of putting a team line up together if they aren't in all in uniform. So, forget Team Jacob shirtless Daken, we'll take the Orangy one. And, that's about all I am going to say about this guy, cause I don't like him. At all. He killed my favorite character and ruined him for me. Excuse my fanboyism, but I distinctly recall that Punisher killed the entire Marvel Universe. Ain't no way, no how is some daddy-issue whinebaby goin' to go and kill my favorite character. Speaking of, why hasn't anyone ever stuck Wolverine in a Kiddie pool? The dude is like 4ft tall, and full of metal. Nuff said.

Remember a long, long time ago what I said about being in uniform? Forget it. The good doctor is too good to forgo. Unless you are playing strict keywords, or don't have any skills to mod her into Ms. Marvel (Customcreator, where are you?), I would put her in any team build. By far my favorite heroclix piece, slap the Thunderbolts ATA on her and watch her work it.What's better than R/S, PB a stealthed Loki, for just over half the cost and some change of Noh-Varr? Put the two on the same team, and I might just stop playing against you.

(Speed) Uncertainty: (non-optional) Roll a d6 at the beginning of your turn. On a result of 3 or 4, Sentry can use Charge until the end of the turn. On result of 5 or 6, Sentry can use Charge and Hypersonic Speed until the end of the turn.
Most competitive clixers have probably never played this version of Sentry. But, really, why not? Simply the idea of landing a 5-6 should unsteady your opponent, and throwing your opponent off-guard, or having him react to you is a big part of winning clix games. Plus, he offers a solid dial at a fairly compact price point. He still has strong numbers, and a good beat stick capability. I strongly recommend throwing in Sentry to most of your Dark Avengers team builds. At the very least, he will offer the team Probability Control to help Ares and Bullseye hit with their paltry 13/12 attacks.

Did I mention that the Dark Avengers have incredibly high attack values? It's unfortunate then, that at 275 points, this Dark Avenging God is most probably going to be the first dropped from the team, unless you are playing a REALLY high point game. At that point cost, he isn't going to be carrying his weight on any smaller build. And really, for a sculpt that tiny, doesn't he have a hard enough time trying to carry that broadsword and ax too? Let's face it: like Iron Patriot, if you are playing this figure, it is probably because you want to play the whole roster of the Dark Avengers. So, let's put the team together.
First, let's look at just the Web of Spiderman Dark Avengers:
Noh-Var, 141
Bullseye, 117
Daken, 72
Venom, 70
Is really the team I would play at 400pts. Taking out Bullseye and adding on the Dark Avengers ATA would work well for 300pt builds, but adding on Iron Patriot, the ATA and a bunch of feats could leave you undermanned and outgunned in a 600pt game.
Ideally, the team above is the most efficient one and would function especially well on a nice open outdoorsy map, like the Bridge. Your range will almost force the opposition to come to you, becoming torn up in the process. Leave Daken around Bullseye as a bodyguard, and send Venom in to deal with and tie up any opposing character that might be able to quickly kill the wannabe archer. The great thing about this team is the consistency of the dials. Nowhere are you going to be on a serious 'weak' click, while your opponent will have to worry about accidentally getting you onto your 'good' clix. Like Click 4 of Venom, or Noh-Vars mid-dial hypersonic. Have I mentioned the really high attack values?
Pulling the entire roster together, we have:
Iron Patriot, 150
Noh-Varr, 141 (dropping Keywords)
Bullseye, 117
Venom, 70
Daken 72
Moonstone, 76
Sentry, 197
Ares, 275
1098.
At a whopping 1100 pts, you aren't a far cry from Colossal level playing power. Unless your venue specifically forbade Dr. Manhattan from materializing, then the Dark Avengers will most probably be throwing down (and losing) to Galactus. Even against non-colossals, I don't see this team winning that much. The big hitters are too susceptible to their defenses being countered, and the smaller guys are way too easy to one-shot. In a game of this point cost, you really need some mid to strong abled beatsticks to hold the opposition in place for guys like Bullseye and Iron Patriot to blast. I don't think Ares is a strong enough piece to fill that roll, although Sentry might. It might be better to trim the team down by an Ares and Iron Patriot, fill the gap with the Dark Avengers ATA, and have a better go at 700pts.
Tell me what you think, what worked for you, and what didn't. What is your line-up of choice? Thanks for reading, and check out the next installment: The U-Foes!

awsome write up.We are playing 600 pts on sunday ill just add moonstone and osbourne feat it up alittle and hope the dice gods bring the pain:cool:
Nice.
Personally, I prefer to use the Venom from Hammer of Thor.
I know we're supposed to use the 'slim' Venom to represent him impersonating Spider-Man, but he always went big during the fights anyways!
Plus that Venom from HoT is a killer.

My Dark Avengers team is
Norman Osborn - 66
Moonstone - 76
Bullseye - 117
Venom(LE) - 70
Dakan - 63
Total - 392
You pretty much get a good mix of abilities and get all the key players minus Ares (Lets be honest, Noh and Sentry were never really with the team. They were a deserter and a plot point respectively)

Hah, I somehow forgot Ares was on the team.
I played this last weekend at 600, mostly because I just recently got Sentry and wanted to try him out:
Norman Osborne
Sentry w/Fortitude
Daken (LE) w/Lunge
Venom (LE)
Noh-Varr
Code Blue Officer (HAMMER Agent wouldn't fit)
(I don't have the new Bullseye.)
It played pretty okay against a mixed team of various Spiders Men, Nightcrawler, and Cosmic Zombie Wolverine, then got absolutely massacred by a keyword-proper Dark Avengers team. I found Sentry to be a big dud.
On the bright side, for me the whole fun of Dark Avengers in the comics was watching them get trashed, so I didn't mind so much.

I've played the full line-up with a few HAMMER Elite agents 6 times so far against an X-Men team themed around the 90's teams, New Avengers line-up, Mighty Avengers and a DC Mystics team(that one was the hardest to beat) but I have successfully and quite awesomely well to boot, kicked the stuffs out of every one of the teams....I have yet to play a Colossal Clix and I don't really want to...don't want to ruin my streak...you know what I'm saying?

Good write-up. Earlier this month, I ran the Dark Avengers in a 1000 pointer. Sans Noh-Varr representing the team after he bailed.
It didn't do too bad. (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5034763&postcount=581) It'd probably do better at 1200-1500. But I'd be much more tempted to use Thunderbolts as an ATA over Dark Avengers.

That point cost is a little off, considering some of your characters don't qualify for the Thunderbolts ATA. IE. No Thunderbolts Keyword.

In a "not themed team" of Dark Avengers I'll use Venom from HoT instead Venom from WoS. He's better.
I played a Dark Avengers team earlier this year, right about the time we heard they were coming out. I'd done some mods that I wanted to use (which you can find in my photo album). I also went for costume over dial, so technically my "Hawkeye" was really Hawkeye. I used:
HoT Venom 73
FF Hawkeye V 84
Ares 275
AW Sentry 211
Warbird 129
IC Wolverine E 61
SN Iron Man 160
Everyone had Thunderbolts (back when they could), and some other feats. I am constantly disappointed by Ares, though I still have a desire to make him work for me.

I am constantly disappointed by Ares, though I still have a desire to make him work for me.
Ares just requires a really high point value to the game. We've got a 1500 pointer coming up this week and one of our players is going to run the whole Dark Avengers lineup along with some HAMMER Agents. And with 150 points available for feats, that's more than enough to give him the help he needs in cards like Fortitude and Protected.
Either way, in my experience he's proven to be more useful than Sentry, who just becomes a 197 point taxi/Probability Control piece.
Norman always has little pogs (from Avengers up) to pass the painful responsibility. The more I play with him the more he grows on me!
To help Bullseye's "fatal first click", you can have him pick up the desk in a golden age game, add +2 to his DV for the first attack, anyway.
He also does well with the mass-absorber that can do +2 damage instead of +1 and is a light object.

Thunderbolts is 8 points and can only be assigned to figures with the thunderbolts keyword. This team wouldn't be legal
In Golden Age, I'd drop Noh-Varr unless I was playing the team before issue 3...that saves you quite a bit of points and the others come close enough to 1000 with Feats.

Even in Golden Age you can no longer use the old Thunderbolts card. All ATA's with the orange colored top are NOT legal in any format.
I love the figures but I wish their point values were more conducive to team building theme teams at a reasonable cost. Oh, and it is moment in the "sun" not "son".

It's even better if you use the desk while he's on his second click.
He also does well with the mass-absorber that can do +2 damage instead of +1 and is a light object.
Problem is, that object only works if it's 3 or fewer squares from blocking. The 3D mailbox does the same +2 to damage without the terrain prereq.

I find that the Dark Avengers really excel in 500 point games. For instance, i played Daken (LE), Iron Patriot, Noh-Var, and Bullseye (which comes out to 480 points), with trickshot on Bullseye to make a round 500, right after WoS came out. They dominated.
I would park Bullseye behind Daken and use Daken to clean up or tie up any pieces that came to take out the sharpshooter. I would then pulsewave or psychic blast the hell out of any beatstick pieces/groupings with Noh-Var, and then use the Iron Patriot's outwit and and various sweet ranged powers to hassle the pieces that would attempt to handle Noh-Var. Sure, Norman isn't as great as Noh-Var, but for his points he's really not a bad value. If you have to choose between the two, you should always take noh-var, but if you can have both, then do it!
The least useful of the bunch was Daken, but he was still darn useful. His Mind Control let me handle a Bagman effectively as Noh-Var picked him off with pulse-wave. His Backstab ability also came into play quite a few times to make significant differences in various matchups, and his BCF proved useful against the few pieces with damage reducers who made it through the onslaught of the Iron Patriot and Noh-Var.

I love the figures but I wish their point values were more conducive to team building theme teams at a reasonable cost. Oh, and it is moment in the "sun" not "son".
Fixed. Thanks. Rep forthcoming.

I was playing a Dark Avengers team for a 400 point build.
Noh-Varr: 141, Bullseye: 117, Daken: 72 and Venom: 70
It wasn't really important to have all theme team because I kept going for the +1 bonus on Noh Varr after stripping all the key words. It did horribly bad because the dice flat out did not like me. Though I did take out Cosmic Spiderman.
I know what you are thinking. How in the world did that team even come close to beating Cosmic Spiderman. Well think of all the things you could possibly do wrong and realize that you are exactly right with even more mistakes to boot.
The other players were watching the match and shaking their head. We were all looking in amazement as he went toe to toe with Daken. Plus he never even used his nurses or hindering for cover. One guy was about to say something then stopped himself. I told him all the mistakes he made (In my opinion not that I'm an expert) and that there was no way I should have even got a hit on Cosmic Spidey. He knew better but for some reason played Spidey like you would Hulk.
All in all it wasn't a bad team. Bullseye is a beast and if any of the rest of them can pull their weight then it should be a winning team. Things are bad when you have to get Venom to grab an object the guy is standing on and perplex down the targets defense for Noh Varr to have a decent chance of hitting with a 5 or 6.
As bad as that team is I still killed Cosmic Spidey. That game could be counted as an assisted suicide rather then a match. :)

Played this v. a huge suicide squad team. It did very well. Don't sleep on the Hammer Elite and Agents. Their synergy with Normie is a big surprise to anyone expecting Ares to do all the work. Noh-Var underperformed for his cost, but Daken was brutal. Sadly, never got an opportunity to web anyone with Venom, even with Lunge, he's not maneuverable enough to be anything but second string protection for Normie.
[EDIT - I am now aware that T-bolts has been retro'd from the old-school cardboard to a slightly different ATA. Oh well, the homegame was played already and both sides had a blast. Too late. Ya can't take the fun back.
man thats an epic team

Why is Bullseye's first click "fatal? Because he only has above average defense as opposed to super above average?

The least useful of the bunch was Daken, but he was still darn useful.
The only time Daken was useful when I played him on the Dark Avengers was when I went up against a team of Spider-Man villains. His trait shut Sandman and Chameleon down without even seeing them. That was about it. Aside from that, he's done nothing. Any time he's in combat, he gets smacked onto a Regen click and then he's toast.

I reckon Ares is only worth his point value if he'd have been the first indomitable. there, i've said it. if I wanted to play a stand in, HoT's Heimdall or Balder aren't bad options.
I played the full Mighty Avengers in a 1200 pt game, and Sentry was easily more usefull than Ares. at 275, he's over costed IMO and should've been about 250.

Because at 117 pts that 17d is a liability early game. Personally I don't see Bullseye sporting a 17d anyway, but that isn't the point.

Excellent article. This was very well timed as there's a 500 point game coming up that I can use this as a guideline.

Writers move on to other things. It's not like there's a magic well that words flow forth and into the Internet endlessly... ;)
