View Full Version : Must everything be random ?

Hello all.

Now, don't get me wrong...I like collectable games. I got into (hang on, I'm still into) the early CCG's (well except Tragic the Gibbering), like Galactic Empires, BattleTech CCG, Star Trek TNGCCG, Star Wars CCG, Overpower...(anyone see a trend here ?), and I enjoy them.

I like miniature games. Heck, I even wrote and published one back before lots of you were born.

...and I like the collectable "random box" idea that you get with HeroClix and MechWarrior DA. (And I assume you get the same with MageKnight, I just don't play it.)

And Heroclix is a wonderful system.

But I was wondering, will they do the teams I want ? ie THUNDERAgents (obviously) or Alien Legion, or Watchmen, or Futurians ?

Sadly, they may not - mostly because people who weren't into those characters wouldn't like getting them in their Firelord stacked boosters (sorry, couldn't resist), anymore than some people liked pulling 57 Wasps in the first release...

So I wondered, why not make "collectors boxes" of those teams, including a card with Team ability and special rules ?

I shudder to think what I'd be prepared to pay for an Alien Legion boxed set (Jugger Grimrod v.Wolverine, Sarigar v Spidey, Meco the Uber Medic, it would just be wonderful...) or for the full set of THUNDERAgents, with Special Rules for Noman to re-enter play once removed - and Including Iron Maiden/Rusty as an AE.

Or how about the Futurians - a 300 pt VanDerVecken, anyone ? Terrayne the EarthMover - oh yes - bye bye Mandarin...

Or Watchmen - with a Dr Manhattan big fig that does appaling damage, but with a random chance of hitting any fig on the table...

And Silk Spectre...and the other Silk Spectre...

The point being, rather like the Themed Starter Sets, you'd know what you were getting. That isn't to say that you couldn't put further characters from these teams into future "collectable" expansions, just that it might be a way to go...

(Oh, and you could do the Groo Universe like that too...)

Any comments, WizKids ? JonL , Critical Miss , Draddog , whoever ?

So, does anyone else see a possible future for this kind of release, ie a "known contents / specific team" box or boxes, using characters / teams not in the game yet ?

Well, as someone mentioned in this thread

http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29531

they might do something like the Heroic Quests packs. (I wonder how well those sold for WizKids?)

However, if they do something like that, I think it's a safe bet they will choose one of the popular teams (X-Men, Justice League) rather than less popular/obscure teams from a long time ago, sorry. They're in the business for sales, and while Alien Legion might get me and you buying them, it's safe to say we don't represent the majority of the Heroclix-buying public.

(Watchmen would sell, yes, but then the rights are an issue, again.)

I think it would be an absolute goldmine for Wizkids to start marketing packs that contained a team, and the purchaser knew exactly what they were getting. This could be a way to revive interest in early figures that are nearing the end of the market's interest. Eg. Sell an X-Men team pack containing the existing IC versions of Professor X, Jean Gray, Cyclops, Wolverine - and then throw in one brand new figure, eg. Angel, and watch them fly off the shelves.

Yup, that would work.

I still want Futurians, Alien Legion,
THUNDERAgents, Watchmen, etc.

I know, let's do both ideas !

Come ON WizKids !
