View Full Version : Suggestions for the site
I just wanted to post this because it's something I find frustrating about this wonderful site. The first thing I would like to address is this: YES, I know that this is posted in the wrong forum. There is a reason for that. It's really simple. I intend for people to see and respond to the things that I'm posting. If I had put it in it's proper forum, it would never be seen and it would die. I'm sure the mods get tired of moving threads all the time because of people posting them in the incorrect forums. Why do people post things in the wrong forum? Once again, it's because they are posting things that they want to have seen and/or get replies on. Sometimes it's just because they are new. I realize that. As an example, the last update on the last thread on the main page was at 12:26 pm and the most recent post on a thread of mine that was moved to the TV/Movie forum was just shortly after 1:00 pm yet my post is nowhere on the home page. Why is that? I have heard mod after mod complaining about having to move threads because of being posted in the wrong forum and they don't get why people say that there is no visibility to anything but General Discussion. Well, surely the mass public can't be COMPLETELY wrong. This will in no way hinder me from coming to this website and posting and reading all day, but I would just like to know that my time on this site is not just me typing into the darkness.

The way I see it, posting everything in General discussion is a downward spiral. The more stuff gets posted there, the less reason people have to visit the other sections, thus even more stuff ends up in GD...
The main benefit of separate forums is that it gets easier to find the stuff you are really interested in, instead of having to plow through dozens of crap threads before striking gold.

I understand and appreciate your perspective. I just want to make sure that you understand my perspective and the perspective of what is surely a lot of other people.
I sympathize with the mods, trying to keep the topics relatively focused, but it's true that for many (really, this goes for me, too, much of the time) if it doesn't have a shot at appearing in the Latest Forum Topics on the main page it's likely to go unnoticed.

And this is basically what I was trying to say. For something like my Green Lantern Movie Sinestro picture that I posted earlier, I posted it in General Discussion so more people could see it. I had about 10 replies in a matter of minutes. It got moved to TV/Movie forum and the topic DIED. Even when bumped by me it didn't get to the main page. These are the kind of things that I'm talking about. Sometimes people don't know what they want to look at until it is put in front of them and it doesn't get put in front of them in those sub-forums.

Quite honestly I don't use that function myself - I patrol my favorite forums. I do remember complaints that 'irrelevant' threads (like mafia games) took up too much space there. So it's a case of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'...

The problem is that things like that is only tangentially related to what this site is dedicated to. There's a place for it, sure, but every topic can get center stage.

Meh. I post threads occasionally. If they live, they live. If they die, they die.
And the world keeps on spinnin'...

Hence my sympathy for the mods. Yeah, the Mafia game notices were a problem.
It's all something I've been aware of but recognizing the problems it hasn't been something I bothered to bring up. Seeing the post, though, I thought I'd at least chime in to say that the same matter's come to mind for me from time to time.
I've probably gone months or more at a time, though, only seeing items on the General Forums -- ones that cycle through the front page. I suspect this is much more common for newer users. I don't know that there's any easy or obvious remedy for it, though. Including more forums in the main shuffle would quickly raise complaints such as came up over the Mafia games.
I remember the same problems as what happened with the Mafia games happened with all the CLAN craziness from 5-6 years ago. You couldn't ever get any info on ANYTHING due to the Mafia/Clan craziness. I definitely understand the point of restricting things that go on the main page. I know there's nothing that can REALLY be done to make everybody happy, but I also think that SOMETHING can change or shift slightly.

So... you posted a thread- and in the wrong forum, mind you- in order to state that you don't like when threads- such as this one- are moved?
So, in actuality, this thread has no point outside of begging it be allowed to exist in the wrong place?
And here I thought I'd find a neat thread about innovative ideas to improve HCRealms...

Please go troll elsewhere

OK, I'm done encouraging bad behavior now.

If everyone posts in the GD forum then threads that belong there will get pushed back because someone is looking for a venue in Des Moines, Iowa, or the latest rant on Bendis.
If you think some forums should be combined please make suggestions. Typhon might like the idea.
The threads that I see the most of that need to be moved deal with team building, other games, dreams/desires (ie wizkids please do this), and comic book talk. There is nothing perfect in a forum and we do the best we can.
The only problem is that everyone else needs to understand that there is more to the site than the GD forum.

I agree with everything you guys are saying. What if there were two seperate MAIN PAGE sections? One for "General Discussion" and one for EVERYTHING ELSE. It would be a way to keep the different threads seperate yet have more "Front Page Power."
Some of the "NEWS" on the front page stays for far too long, so there is where you could find space for the new section. It might actually get people to post in the right forum then. I know I would.

I've never been called a troll before... which is ironic, because my last name sounds very similar...
I just came here hoping to discuss an idea I had just the other day- the ability to save heroclix team builds to your account- and thought this thread would be about such thoughts and maybe get some visibility to those ideas.

Hey, that's cool. I'm trying to make suggestions now too. After your post and the posts of the moderators, I figured I should offer up something constructive as opposed to just complaining about things like others do.

I totally get where your coming from as I was a forum Admin for another site that pertains to my main hobby. We had people always asking to create sub forums and to break things down into more specific areas because everyone thought it would be so much easier to find exactly what you wanted. Really it just ends up being a much bigger mess then where you started. I only now visit the forum I used to Admin for, maybe once every two weeks because the forum is just so massive its gotten out of control. My friend who runs it pretty much leaves it to the other Admins and Mods to run now and he only steps in if there is an actual problem with the forum that needs to be fixed. I speak from experience here, HCRealms forums are fine just the way they are and I mean that in all seriousness. You can't take it personally if you think your posts are getting brushed aside, thats just the nature of the beast, its nothing against you or the content you want people to see, so don't look at it that way.

I haven't checked out the photo yet but I wanted to make a suggestion for next time. The photo sounds like it would have hone over well in the DC comics forum. It may not have been GD level visibility but it would have been decent visibility. By people who would have really appreciated it. Also in that forum it would have been less likely moved by the mods. Maybe they would be nice and move it there for you. It might get the attention you desire. :)
