View Full Version : Your Position on the Poll...

For me, it ain't a trip to the Realms without a good poll to vote on. So I wanted to ask the important question. And what better format than a Poll? (That was a hypothetical question and not the Poll question, please continue reading.) "What do you think about HCRealms Polls?" I was just curious how everybody felt about the Polls. Do you vote and post, just vote, just post?
1. They're Great! First thing I do is Vote then Post! I'm AWESOME! Comment)
2. Depending on the subject matter I will vote and possibly Post. I've got priorities.
3. I've never voted but I will view the replies and comment to make fun of someone or correct a misquoted/misinterpreted rule. (Comment)
4. I actually have a life. I've never even looked at a Poll (this one doesn't count).
5. What is a Poll? (Don't Comment)
My apologies for newbiesness. This may be a duplicate.
Yay! First to post on the poll about posting on polls. :cheeky: I actually look forward to polls and vote every time. Don't post very ofter, unless it is interesting or something I'm familiar with it. But, definitely keep the polls going.

I think most of the polls are stupid, honestly. So I don't vote or post on most of them, only the ones that are relevent to Heroclix, Comics, and to me.

I never vote I will view the pole and comment to ridicule someone or correct a misinterpreted rule.
You spelled "poll" wrong. :p

I don't have a problem with the polls. It's the naggers who complain about not having their specific choice available so they comment yet don't vote. Remember, not every poll is meant to have every possibility as an option. Even professional pollsters don't give you every possibility because then the poll would be too watered down.

I'm forgainst it.
I am pro-poll. (That's what she said)
That being said, I don't much care for polls that interrupt a poll that somebody else just started and take away from their time on the Home page just to make some back handed attempt at insults or veiled innuendo.
They have improved - I think you have to be a donor now, not sure about that. In any case, I vote and post occasionally now, but they used to tend toward the inane more often than not.

I'm really surprised more people didn't pick the option that included "I'm awesome". I mean, it's like "RAY, WHEN SOMEONE ASKS YOU IF YOU ARE A GOD, YOU SAY YESSS!!!
You do realize that, realistically, none of the last three options can be accurately chosen. Is this a psychological experiment to see how many Realmsers are pathological liars?
Most polls, including this one, are very poorly constructed and end up being either meaningless or specifically designed to support a specific position.
I do still find some of them interesting.

Depends on the subject matter. If it's something that caught my eye I vote and comment, if not...I move on. It's as simple as that!
I really don't get how some people hate the polls. They are SOOOOOO easy to ignore if ya don't like them!
I hate a lot of poorly designed polls because one of my absolute pet peeves in life is having other people declare my opinions for me. When I read a poll that says:
"Do you like X? A) Yes! I put it on every one of my teams! B) No, I'll never use it!"
it just sets my teeth on edge. There's no rational reason for this, but I hate people trying to put me in a box that doesn't fit, which is why I'm a long time, frequently noisy advocate of people applying common sense to poll design.
Look at this poll, while it hasn't stopped thirteen people so far, three of the answers are logically impossible for anyone to select.
"I never vote I will view the pole and comment to ridicule someone or correct a misinterpreted rule."
If you never vote, you can't vote in this poll. If you vote in this poll, asserting you never vote is untrue.
"I actually have a life. I've never even looked at a Poll (this one doesn't count)."
This one tries to get around the logical problem of the above, but fails. If they never look at a poll, they aren't looking at this one to see it. They HAVE to have looked a this poll to vote, and the idea that they somehow wandered in here to just look at this particular poll to express their non-looking-at-pollness is simply preposterous.
"What is a Poll? (Don't Comment)"
Voting for this implies you understand the concept of polls well enough to vote in them, thus disqualifying you from voting here.
GAAARRGH!
And then the other answers don't work together at all either.
"They're Great! First thing I do is Vote then Post! I'm AWESOME!"
"Depending on the subject matter, I will vote and possibly Post. I've got priorities."
First, "I'm Awesome" is exactly the kind of meaningless addition to a poll answer that sets my teeth on edge through my pet peeve above. Worse, it implies an emotional state ("I love polls!") that is compatible with the second answer ("I love polls, but even I don't vote in all of them"), so there is a failure of exclusion between answers. Indeed, these two answers belong to two different questions, namely "How do you feel about polls" and "How often do you participate in polls".
Of course, asking "what do you think" doesn't really lend itself to polls because people's thoughts are too diverse. A "what do you think" thread is better off divorced from the poll, just presented as a normal thread where people can express themselves. To do this as a poll, you need to narrow the question to where distinct categories of answers are possible (or at least, broad distinct categories can be presented, along with an "other" result). Indeed, it would be hard to present this as a poll at all because you're going to have extreme categories that almost nobody uses and a moderate category that nearly everyone does (really, who seriously doesn't fall into the second answer above?), so it's not telling you anything other than something about the prevalence of people with a snarky sense of humor.
And, of course, it functions very well at drawing out curmudgeonly misanthropes that have nothing better to do with their time but gripe about something as meaningless as poll design. Yeah, you know who you are and don't think we don't know, too!

Considering what website this is, obviously these people posting these polls aren't professional pollsters. Don't get too worked up over bad polls. Just take them for what they are and enjoy the site.

this makes me think of the band, " whats in a name"
or maybe it was a song title...
anyhoo... who cares abourtuu thiss sutuupiiddd poulll???

Professional pollsters bungle these things up, also. Of course, that's assuming it's a bungle rather than a blatant attempt to massage the data so it fits the party line.
One day at the mall, a pollster tried to get me to answer a series of questions like,
Would you vote for Bush for a third term of the Constitution was changed to allow it?
1) Yes
2) No, because I dislike his policies.
3) No, because the constitution should not be changed
4) No, because two years is enough.
5) No, because ...
This is a blatant attempt to split the "no" vote up, so that the people who designed the poll can claim that "Yes was the most common response by a wide margin!" Remember, anytime a news organization tells you the "results" of a poll without actually telling you the poll question and all the answers, your proper response is to guffaw.
Don't get too worked up over bad polls. Just take them for what they are and enjoy the site.
It's a pet peeve! If it was something I was capable of being rational about, it wouldn't be a pet peeve, would it? : - )

Well, I apologize I didn't think of a better poll. The fact is I found out what I wanted to know. Hopefully it will go away soon and we can get back to our lives. The beauty of it is even people that were dissappointed in the actual poll were still able to voice their opinion which I value. Maybe I should of polled how many people think there should be a Red Son Superman (yes or no).
I always vote....annoying habit but the empty poll is to tempting not tooo....
So if you dont put "other" as an option you may find I voted for something that I didnt totally agree with (as with this poll)....
Better to vote and have the poll disperse then to be accurate.

I voted for the third option.
Because, y'know, criticizing a gaming/comics-based poll for being "inaccurate" is QUITE OBVIOUSLY THE MOST CONSTRUCTIVE THING YOU COULD EVER DO. SERIOUSLY. YOU'RE A GENIUS.

Also, given the general education level/intellectual laziness of our citizens, the job of collecting their/our asinine opinions in an attempt to categorize the unwashed masses into a pretty pie chart falls somewhere between professional pundit and wedding planner in terms of usefulness.
IMO, of course.
For me, it depends on the topic. I started playing clix only in the last 2 months, and going over the polls helps me understand the mindset / thinking of the ppl here.
I love polls, and I'm awesome.

Agreed.
I love polls, but a lot of the ones posted on this site are pretty dumb and poorly constructed. I still answer most of them.

Well, I am a genius, certified even! I solved that peg puzzle at Cracker Barrel and everything!
But, if I wanted to do the most constructive thing I could ever do, I'd hardly be hanging around a forum dedicated to discussing plastic crack. Really, any post on any topic to this forum is, by definition, not the most constructive thing someone could ever do.
