I'm looking for a system such as D&D but set in the present. No super-powers / spells or anything like that.

Guns, armor, skills etc. Time frame can be anywhere from 1940-2000's. I'm looking for a system not a campaign.

Closest thing that I can think of would be "Battletech" but that is in the future.

Better idea: the out-of-print Alternity RPG system. A precursor to the ated D20 system, simple, elegant. Though packaged as a Sci-fi RPG, the actual system itself lives up to its billing as "No Limits!". It can handle tech from Stone Age to Far Future, with options for magic (called F/X there), cyberware, psionics, mutations. As noted, all of those features are optional. You could very easily play modern-day with reference to the Dark.Matter setting for the material, to save the GM from reinventing the wheel.

Check out http://www.alternityrpg.net.

I thought GURPS has a modern-day scenario. I remember playing in one, in any case, though I don't know which rule books we used.

I'll admit I haven't used it. I looked at it a great deal. You've definitely got a solid reference for alternityrpg though. When in doubt, acquire them online via pdf and see which one suits your fancy before you buy materials. I know a few people who failed to heed said advice and how it pertained to D&D 4th vs. Pathfinder. They regretted jumping headlong in.
