From all I've read and seen it is Pyro. But he started off at the school then goes to the Brotherhood.
There's a point in one of the previews I've seen where Prof. X tells Pyro the next time he thinks about using his powers that way, don't. Or something to that effect.

thanks guys, that explains the 'John" Storm was talking to in the first X-movie, but when was Pyro a good guy?

Movies are never exactly like the comics. It's probably for some sort of dramatic effect or a potential romantic triangle with Iceman, Rogue, & Pyro, the teens/young adults in X2. The first movie captured the spirit of the characters, much like this one probably will. No movie is exactly like the comic. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
"There's a point in one of the previews I've seen where Prof. X tells Pyro the next time he thinks about using his powers that way, don't" - Hes talking to Iceman. Earlier in the preview Iceman freezes someone while they are ona field trip, its on this field trip Xaiver is saying those lines. The shots of Pyro taking out the cop car was just shown at the same time.
"but when was Pyro a good guy?" in the comcis, never, but making him a student was a good way to get him into the movie. There were rumors a while ago (and it apears in the trailer they were right) that Pyro switchs sides at some point in the movie and joins the brotherhood.

Comic Pyro: Austrailian Romance Novelist. For most of his life(in the comics) he was a villian, growing close to Mystique and Avalanche, but when Freedom Force fell apart, so did many other things. He got the Legacy Virus, effecting him both mentally and physically. Pyro died a hero, saving Senator Kelly(Only so that a human assassin would later take him out.) with pretty much his dying act, and pleaded for human and mutant co-existance.
Movie Pyro: We know little about. We saw him making a small fire ball in a class room of Storm;s with his lighter.(Which he normally carried in the comics.) She refered to him as 'John'.(Pyro's name is St. John Allerdyce, often called John.) The actor has been changed(The only one that didn't remain the same.) and we know he takes a more active role in the upcoming movie. We don't know what evactly, but we can assume he joins Mags.. but who knows.. at the end of the movie.. he could turn around and save them all.. ;) We'll just have to wait and see.

I saw what I beleive to be Lady Deathstrike in a trailer, she would be a new Brotherhood in X2

Well, from the little we've been shown, I'm being led to believe that Lady DS is somehow tied into Stryker's team.. *shrug*.
Lady Deathstike (just Deathstrike in the movie) was never on the Brotherhood (or even a mutant).
Shes a human whos been enhanced with various powers. She will be Strykers weapon for taking out Mutants (she fights Cyclops and Wolverine int he movie, and is probably sent to kill Magento (there is a scene where she has a plastic gun).

That was her with the gun?
I couldn't tell, thought it almost looked like Jean, heh.. but I didn't think it would fit her in killing Magneto. (Glass/plastic gun also assumed to be for him.. who else would you need it for? ;) )

Nobody I've ever known named St. John has been called "John". They're usually called "St. John" (pronounced "SIN-jin").
It was sloppy writing in the movie, but really minor.

I've never personally known anyone named St. John, but what I was refering to was in the comics. ..Avalanche and Mystique (Blob most likely as well) tended to call him John from time to time.
[Edit, here below.]
And just out of curiosity.. how do you get "Sin-jin", out of St. John? =p (I've heard someone say this before..)
Is the name not St. John, as in 'Saint John'? (That's what I always assumed it to mean, again, never known anyone to be named St. John.)

When is seen X1.5 Singer said evyone who was in the first movies had to sign for the sequal. The actor playing Pyro is he same as the first x movie.

Also sloppy writing. That'd be like if someone called me "Ward" just because it was part of one of the words in my name.
The pronunciation comes from the Old English. You also get "Silinger" out of "St. Leger", "Rafe" out of "Ralph", etc (as in Ralph Fiennes, the actor). It's very common throughout the Commonwealth, especially in England, but has become less common over the last thirty years or so.

Nope, they got a different actor for him. Why? I don't know, but it was released a long time back.;) I was under the idea that they only had the 'Main characters' to sign on for such a contract, though in any case, I don't see why the actor for the first, wouldn't WANT to return, heh. Perhaps he was busy doing something else.. or dead or something. :p

Heh, tell me about it, half of the writers couldn't remember that he was Austrailian and not English. ;)

"Sin-jin" works fine for me. Roger Moore used St. John Smythe as an alias in his last Bond film, A View To A Kill, and pronounced it properly.

There's also the well-known beach volleyball player, Sinjin Smith (born St. John Smith). He went by Sinjin so people wouldn't mispronounce his name. :)
They got different actors for all of the minor characters except Iceman, mostly because it was filmed in Vancouver, whereas the first movie was filmed elsewhere (Toronto?). There's a lot of young Vancouver actors in X2.

They get a different one for Kitty as well? (Just curious..)
"but I didn't think it would fit her in killing Magneto" - It probaly is. When you like at the background of the shot of her with the gun its the Magneot cell set. Theres also shots her attacking cyclops on that set, in the same cloths as her with the plastic gun. She works for Styker, and Styker hates mutants. He probabyl sends her to kill Magneto and she takes the plastic gun so he can't do anything with it.
"Nobody I've ever known named St. John has been called "John". They're usually called "St. John" (pronounced "SIN-jin"). It was sloppy writing in the movie, but really minor." - Calling Pyro John is NOT sloppy writing. Thats like saying calling a character Dave instead of David, or Greg instead of Gregory is sloppy writing. Its just a short form of his name.
"When is seen X1.5 Singer said evyone who was in the first movies had to sign for the sequal. The actor playing Pyro is he same as the first x movie." - No its not. Only the principal actors were signed to do the sequels, Pyro was NOT a principal actor in the X-Men. ALexander Burton played Pyro in X-Men and Aaron Stanford is playing Pyro is X2. Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) has said many times that he was susprised they called him back for X-2 since he wasn't signed on to do anymore. They have also re-cast Jubilee and Shadowcat.

No.
John is no more a short form of St. John than Id is a short form of David.
Please do your research first. I did.
St. John - mmmmmmm, ya I can't see why they would just call him john.
Its not sloppy writing, its realistic writing. Its what people would call him irl. Most names have short variations.

And, as is often the case, people would be wrong. And he would correct them. And they wouldn't keep doing it.
Give it up already. If the name were pronounced "Saint John", then "John" might be a short form. It is not, so it isn't. Earlier in the thread, I provided some etymological explanation of why this is the case.
Tell you what: you go get your Linguistics degree, and we'll talk.
Dude, the name JOHN is in his name, people are going to call him JOHN for short. Accept it. And "doing research" on names doesn't really mean anything. I know 2 rebeccas. One doesn't care what variation of her name you call her, another will start yelling at you if you call her becky, she hates it. Its a name, they are always going to be different. Calling Pyro John isn't sloppy, its realistic writing.
