1) Is it a fixed five hours, or could we test at our convenience?
2) When would testing begin?

at least 5 hours per week
As for the start date; We're screening candidates and filtering them to WizKids ASAP. From there, WizKids will provide us with further details.
Thanks!

1: Yeah, plus or minus - Some weeks 3 or some weeks 7. It's a guideline vs. a hard fast number.
2: Soon, maybe in days.
Huh, might as well apply. I could use something to do since I've got an open schedule. Sounds fun.

This looks great. I'm super stoked for this :) Hopefully that fact i have absolutely no prior experience in game testing won't completely know me out of the race.
It seems like a no-brainer for me - I've personally managed HCOL for years now. I single-handedly kept people playing online for years now and I can spot bugs like it's nobody's business. If they don't want my input... why, then they'd just be being obtuse! :)
Seriously, would love to help with an official product. Pick me!

I think I didn't word my question correctly. Is it:
a) "You will do three to seven hours of testing during a one week period."
b) "You will be testing from 5PM to 10PM on Fridays."

More the former than the latter I suspect, but don't take this as an informed response, I'm just spitballing. ;)

Well, I am stunned (as well as very pleased) to see this. I applaud NECA/WizKids for attempting this and will gladly do what I can to help.

Sounds interesting. I wonder if this is HeroClix related or just some other game. Perhaps one of the new Reiner Knizia projects.
I'm really excited at this opportunity, and applaud WizKids for coming to where the players are. As a game developer myself (I was on the development team for the award-winning Anachronism card game), I'll be the first to recognize that not all gamers are good testers; and not all testers (those with a very sharp eye for detail), are good gamers. So a good mix is needed to ensure that the product appeals to everyone. Kudos to WizKids ... from a very excited gamer! :)

I agree. When we send software out for testing I like to have a certain number of newbs and/or people who know nothing about systems or testing to try out the new or updated system. Its a mistake to have only experienced gamers/testers exercising your software during beta.

Will X day be mostly weekdays or weekends? will X time be during a "normal" business day (9 am - 5 pm local)? Will local be PST? I understand if some or none of these can be answered for non-disclosure reasons.

I loved it too; and we won so many awards that it pained me when they had to close up shop (Poor management goes a long way to kill a good idea; I was a developer, they didn't want my "industry" input. Bad consultants also wrecked things.). I can't wait to get to testing again. :)

I would like to see Crow and Hair10 get in on this. They are good with the rules. I don't think I could manage the 5 or more hours per week. Sounds awesome though. I really would like to find out more about this like:

We're taking all kinds of folks. There will be multiple rounds of testing with various objectives.
Personally, beyond the obvious squash bug objectives, I want to see if we got the UI right.
BTW - It is a PC game running under windows with modest video card requirements.

I also applied and think that as a fan of collectible games since 1994 it should be a great opertunity. However, i dont dirrectly think that this will related to heroclix. maybe it will be what the rumored return of mageknight will be. Im all for it. if the testmarket for the product share works out, it could mean the inclusion of Heroclix in an online collectible form, similar to Magic Online as an example.
Hope that everything goes well and they see this project to a finished product though.

Here's to hoping I get in as well. I've tested games before and love being the "Oddball" in trying things others might not. You know the type "How the HECK did you get up to that spot!!!" or "Well driving backwards on this track seemed liked a good idea at the time...."
I've tested other games both MMO's and FPS and even dabbled in some level design back in Rise of The Triad and Quake 2.
I forgot to mention in my application that I'm going for a web development degree right now and use to do programming and code before.
Good luck to everyone!!

After 200 words to describe your experience, I wasn't ready for just 500 characters to describe how great I am. I was patting myself on the back for hitting 499 words by the time I realized I needed to start pruning and cutting, and eventually hacking and slashing, to get down.
Okay, I've applied. Let's see if we can add another notch on the "Online collectable games I've beta'd" belt... and let's hope this one lasts a bit longer than the others. Stupid Sony, buying up good games for their technology and dropping the game parts like hot potatoes...

And now, for your youthful interpretation - a sentence-by-sentence evaluation of this request for slave labor (as a public service to the HC Community):
Due to the strength of the HCRealms.com Community, we are pleased to announce that WizKids has chosen us (the community) as the Exclusive resource pool to fill the current "Game Tester" needs! ~ "Hey, these suckers actually like our game - they'd probably give us their time, energy and labor for free if we ask them in a nice way..."
So let's make a great showing and help WizKids bring out the next great product! ~ "C'mon guys, don't think - act!"
Are you interested in shaping one of WizKids biggest online initiatives? ~ Do you want the impression they will listen to your opinions?
Want a sneak peak at one of our most ambitious projects in years? ~ This is the internet - you get sneak peeks of everything on a daily basis.
WizKids is looking for beta testers for a closed beta of an upcoming online game (to be announced). ~ No, they won't tell you what you're signing up for, either.
Testers will be required to put in at least 5 hours per week in testing duties and must be prepared for early stage beta software (meaning there are a lot of bugs, glitches and things that don't work just right quite yet). ~ Required? Hmmm... sounds like a job to me...
...and so on. Look - if you are young and have no real world commitments and have the spare time to help Wiz Kids dodge paying real professionals for the game data necessary to publish something gamers actually want - then fine.
Just think of all the costs they get to avoid paying - payroll, insurance, benefits, marketing expenses, advertising, and more - just because you feel "honored" to be selected to join this rip-off program.
If they offered something with a real world value such as a discount on their products or the subscription fee for their upcoming release, then hey, it might be worth it. But as it is represented right now - you're all setting yourselves up to be hosed for nothing.
Just the opinion of someone who has published games for the better part of two decades and paid for every focus group and marketing team needed to make them successful. If they want your labor - get them to pay you for it!

lol, Max No Pass, that was entertaining. You do have a valid point. However, there is another side to it from the volunteer's point of view:
If you love to do something, you should do it regardless of whether you get compensated for it or not. The reward is in the actual "doing."
If you do a great job, material or some other form of compensation will most likely naturally follow one way or another. If not, then it's no biggie because you didn't do it for money.
At any rate, that point of view is both stress-free and rewarding. :)

I've applied and Im really excited. Kudos to NECA/Wizkids for giving us Heroclix players this opportunity.
Max No Pass, it seems to me like they aren't exactly misrepresenting what this is, and if people want to volunteer (and they clearly do), where exactly is the "rip-off"? We're getting exactly what we want. Just because you wouldn't volunteer and someone else would doesn't make the act of volunteering a "rip-off".

Well, according to the sign-up form, it's something involving "figures" and there's a trading meta game element. Since they came to HCRealms, it's probably safe to assume it's at least a clix-based game. But seeing as how HCRealms got the "exclusive", it's probably HeroClix-centric.
That's just a whole lot of guessing based on the presented facts, though.
Do we know for 100% sure they are asking us to "test" a Heroclix game?

I suppose we don't actually know, but we can hope.
However bittersweet it would be for me, my level of enthusiasm for such a product will depend in large part on what sort of fee model gets used. Since I'm a completist, I wouldn't thrill to the idea of buying virtual boosters and establishing a virtual collection - I would much, MUCH rather pay a flat fee or subscription rate for total unlimited figure access, even if such a fee is steep (no doubt to cover development costs). I want the option, and I'd take it in a heartbeat over random virtual "pulls".
The other way it could disappoint is if they don't put in all the existing figures ever made - but with dedicated workhorses like me willing to do free data entry (not to mention their gallery at heroclix.com) I'm sure they can get them all in there.

I kinda thought I'd be a shoe-in if only because I would have had to sign an NDA and probably hand over the whole HCOL project while I was at it.
I do wonder about the fiscal viability of an official HC online product. After all, I've been peddling around freeware and it's still a hard sell. Then again, once the initial game software is developed you only need a very small crew to manage it. The real question will be what fee models they choose to implement and how they promote this. Heroclix is a tactile, social experience for a whole lot of its players. I'm in the minority in being mostly a pure strategist. I would play the game with painted rocks if I had to.
Does anybody recall being surveyed by WK/NECA about whether they would play an online product?

For all the others - we are doing several rounds of invites. If not this round perhaps next round. Keep the faith.

Keeping the faith!!
I've been having problems.
I can't seem to log into the Forum in order to download the client, and there seems to be no recourse to report the error ( the email asks for no email feedback, and the forum won't give me access to send an error message to the administrator) Is this just me? Am I just not processed yet?

That's exactly the question I was going to ask. With any luck I'll make it in on another round.
problem solved. I'm in and I will cease asking questions in this forum.

I"ll toss my hat in the ring too. I travel alot and have plenty of time sitting in my hotel room, that I could use to test the game. Sounds great considering travel prevents me from playing regular heroclix tournaments.

If this software is what i think it is.....bout frigging time! Sign me up for round 2 or 3....I need to get my wife playing. An unmasked Dr. Doom with Julian McMahon's face would help my cause as well.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYBODY!

Heroclix is a tactical, social experience for a whole lot of its players. I'm in the minority in being mostly a pure strategist. I would play the game with painted rocks if I had to.
Does anybody recall being surveyed by WK/NECA about whether they would play an online product?
Damn man, I figured this was ur baby with Neca/Wizkids backing. Go figure.
Probably way too late but I will try anyway

Wouldn't a comment like this violate a NDA, as it implies participation?

I don't think telling people that you got selected violates the NDA but rather telling people about stuff you are testing does.
...kinda like getting selected as a juror... you can tell people that you got selected just not discuss what the case is about.
at least that's what I think it is... the NDA is the company's insurance against someone stealing their ideas, trade secrets, etc.

Folk may want to clarify that point first, rather than risk the consequences since NDAs and Jury duty are not nearly synonymous.
Better safe than sorry. ;)

BeWAAAAAAAAAARE the NDA!!!!! It's GONNA GETCHU!
nowhere in the NDA does it say that you must keep the NDA itself a secret.
I read it before signing it.

I posted this in another thread but this is probably where it should go.
I have a hypothetical question:
say, a person applied to be a beta tester for the upcoming WK online game. And then, that person received the email with the attachments, signed and sent in the Non-Disclosure Agreement but hasn't heard back from WK.
Does that mean that this hypothetical person can continue to develop an online program on his or her own?
After all, nothing has "been given to Recipient by Disclosing Party" right?

In all candor, the Realms is the last place I would go seeking legal advice. ;)
I would contact WK directly with your question.

lol, that is true. But, they said not to bother them with questions... hahaha.
Seriously though, thanks... you speak the truth.
I'm certain you are right. If nothing is disclosed to you, you can't be in breach of contract, though How do you prove that no information was transmitted to you? The most solid piece of documentation; hypothetically, should this show up in Court, is the NDA.
Also, the likelihood that you are developing the same property as Wizkids is highly unlikely, and without seeing the online game, you couldn't possibly be intruding on their UI or game design..
all that said, it is probably best, If you are seriously pursuing an online game, to at least contact them to get some note of verification stating you were not selected for the Beta, but that would likely take you out of the running for future invitations, on this beta, which there may be.

Presuming that said person received the NDA, said person would have the contact e-mail from WK for the project.
That said, I would advise using that e-mail address to send forth their question re: potential conflict of interest.
If you mean how does one contact WK in general, I would say it depends on the nature of the question/contact.
If it's to inquire re: the Beta Test process, the instructions specifically request that folk do not do so. If it's another sort of question, I would advise PM'ing Ziran here on the Realms. He's on pretty regularly. :classic:
