Here you go, pics attached.

Orange Square rules for Airport Terminal:

Special Rules:

Orange squares are moving walkways. At the beginning of each turn, each character completely occupying a moving walkway square that cannot use the Flight ability must move as if they had a Speed value of 1 and automatically breaks away. This move starts with the character closest to the thick orange line and must be in the direction of that thick orange line.

Orange square rules for Hawkworld:

Special Rules:

Orange squares are Open Air (Low Gravity). After actions resolve, if a character who can’t use the Flight ability occupies an Open Air square, deal them 1 unavoidable damage, then that character’s owner may place them in their starting area. Non-carried objects in Open Air squares are removed from the map. Open Air squares are otherwise treated as clear terrain.

Some guys who don't monkey around...

Looks like we'll get at least two monkey repaints. Maybe Grodd and Ultra-humanite. Though if there isn't a green monkey, I'll be a monkey's uncle.

Usually I don't like orange terrain (makes things too complicated) though Hawk world is awesome. However, what is so historically (in DC) significant about a Airport?

First off, fantastic to get two maps!

I still don't have the WoS Bridge (sad!), and need to be sure I don't miss these two like I did WoS. I love the locations; it's so refreshing to see them really stretching their imaginations to unique battlegrounds with interesting effects. I'm stoked to have an airport for something completely different; and while Thanagar probably wouldn't have been choice #1 for an alien world (in a set with no Thanagarians at all), I do like what the map looks to add to a game experience.

Here's hoping for Attilan in GSX!

I am looking forward to running a Checkmate or S.H.I.E.L.D. vs terrorist airport attack. Also, it may be Hawkworld but to me it will be Ysmault for me. Just pretend the orange spaces are lakes of blood and the rock wall is the Wall of Pain.

So now that they have figured out the concept of coveyor belts, they should go back and re-release the DC Junkjard map. And add that any character in the compactor squares takes a damage at the end of the turn...

I believe the siginificance of the airport map has to do with the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 airport terminal map on multiplayer. That's just my guess though.

Awesome to get 2 new maps - so freaking awesome!

I like the fact that the special rules are printed on both sides near the starting areas that's a great idea

but I've noticed that two out of the 4 maps are huge shooting ranges
Hawkworld and the Crater map are tough going for any bricks

Nice to see 2 maps. Hawkworld is a nice change of pace that looks like a fun challenge. The airport, while a nice location, is a straight up shooting gallery. Not sure I dig that. Have to play it to find out. But I am happy with 2 maps.

That's what I thought at first, but then I realized that figures in the starting area can quickly exit the indoor area and seek shelter in the outdoor regions. They'll have to break down a wall or two near the center of the map to enter combat, though, but that's better than no protection at all.

Good point. I just counted, if a grounded figure starts in the corner farther from the door, on the top he has to move 11 squares to get outside. On the bottom, only 9. Obviously, with a small team, start closer to the door, but on a team with a lot of minions, it could be an issue. I had not noticed the tunnel is all indoor. I was looking at the big open areas.

I'll have to play it to see what I think.

Love the Hawkworld, looks like it will be a lot of fun. Airport is a welcome addition. Two different things then what we currently have. As Ihsan pointed out, you can blast walls. I think a lot of people don't think of that(myself included sometimes) because you don't want to feel you are wasting actions. Can't wait. Getting even more psyched!

My first thoughts were along along these lines:
"Huh, an airport? That seems sort of random. Looks like an okay map and not something we've seen before, but not very iconicly DC for this particular set...Wait, TWO maps?! HAWKWORLD!! YAY!"

I'm very happy that we're getting two maps and as a huge Hawkman fan, getting Hawkworld is some unexpected awesomeness.

However, in a set without Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Thanagarians, or even Man-Hawks, it seems like a rather random inclusion.

There are a few DC locations that are more iconic in nature that I was expecting and really hope that we see before too long.
Such as:
Gotham City, one with some rooftops housing gargoyles and the Bat Signal!
Themiscyra
Mogo
Oan Power Battery
Apokalpse
Fortress of Solitude

QFT.

The whole set seems unthematic. I love the inclusion of Hawkworld, but it would make so much more sense if this was a Hawk-heavy set. Any GL world would have made more sense, perhaps Coast City as it played a role in the recent White Lantern mess... Or Star City, with that funky forest.

The airport? Totally random. & can someone tell me if "must move 1" uses a move action?

On the off chance the local store I visit for my habits doesn't plan on ordering any 75th anniversary cases except on an as needed basis for orders placed by customers. Is there a way to purchase one of these maps or can an Organized Play kit be ordered by said store without ordering cases?

So if I am reading this right on Hawkworld map; I keep my Night nurse parked in my starting area. I send my grounded Speeder, RS or charge guy to attack and end up in a orange square, take 1 damage, then automatically back to my starting point so my NN can heal me? Maybe it will not work with RS or Charge if you are not allowed your attack after the action move (not sure about the wording) but it will with HS. Wow!

I was thinking...... If you put an object on the "moving Walk-way", then you place a character with stealth in the "moving walk-way". Does the object moves with the character, aka "moving" stealth character and object together.

If this is the case, watch out for mademoiselle mare! or any character with stealth-range!

I hope this is the case. I can't wait for the official ruling on this map.

btw I love the double-side map. I don't mind hawkworld. But I would something a little more related to the overall theme of the set.

My choice of locations:
JLA - Hall of Justice
Batcave
Metropolis
Gotham City
MOGO
Central City or Keystone City
Titans Tower
Gorilla City

Seeing the Hawkworld map, I immediately thought of the old Coming of Galactus rooftop map. This map should be hopefully easier to get, and better since there's (some) hindering.

But the airport map... wow! That is a stealth team's new favorite!

Weird picks though for such a lantern heavy map. You'd think that they'd have done some kind of new space map or something.

Both of these maps look good!

It's a shame we didn't get Hawk-soldier generics in this set to go with the Hawkworld map!

And the Airport map should have an orange square to represent a TAS checkpoint strip-search! It should make any character carrying an object drop it, and maybe do 1 poison damage to represent the TAS x-ray search! ;)

So wait, what's up with the UFOs on Hawkworld? They have ladders next to them and appear to be elevated terrain, which makes total sense, but I do not see any color change between their boundary lines and the open space boundary lines. Sure, red and orange look similar, but not so similar that I should be unable to tell the difference. Are they really considered open space and not elevated?

It looks to me like there is more than one level of elevated terrain.

The ladders show that they are considered elevated to the terrain around them, and that terrain is in turn elevated to the terrain surrounding it.

Have there ever been multiple levels of elevated terrain on a single map before? Did that happen on the Crisis map with the time zones?

I'm thinking an object won't move, because the rules specify a character occupying the square. It actually doesn't matter though, because the squares adjacent to the walkway are already hindering.

mohenjo
12/08/2010, 15:34
These two levels of elevated terrain on the Hawkworld map bring up some questions:

If a character is on elevated terrain level 2 on square J2 can they shoot over the edge of elevated terrain level 1 square K2 to draw line of fire and hit a character on grounded (?) terrain in square L2?

Could the character on square J2 draw line of fire to hit a character on square J5?

Also, how does this effect SR Superman (#50)'s SP:

"LEAP TALL BUILDINGS: Superman can use leap climb. When he uses leap climb, if he starts his movement on elevated terrain and ends on grounded terrain, he can then make a close combat attack as a free action."

If he starts on elevated terrain level 2 and moves to elevated terrain level 1, is the level 1 terrain then considered grounded terrain for the purposes of this SP? Or is it always considered elevated terrain, regardless?

These two levels of elevated terrain on the Hawkworld map bring up some questions

I think what you are seeing there is the border of the Starting area (Purple) and the border of the elevated terrain (Red) in the starting area.

I do not see two levels of elevated terrain, nor do I believe WK would introduce something like this without an accompanying rules primer/announcement.

I think what you are seeing there is the border of the Starting area (Purple) and the border of the elevated terrain (Red) in the starting area.

Actually, it looks like the end-zone elevateds are surrounded by the starting areas, rather than part of them. So, no, you can't start with your favorite sniper on the elevated terrain before the game begins.

But then, I didn't play-test this map, like some Vermonters I could mention.

Then why the ladders?

Look at the elevated terrain in squares O4,5 and P4,5. It is clearly on other elevated terrain and it is not near the starting area.

And there is a ladder from one level of elevated to the other.

RavenProject
12/08/2010, 16:09
Upon closer examination, they look like they have elevated (red) borders to me.

I checked the map using Photoshop. There are indeed two different colors being used for the borders.

For future reference: There are a lot of color-blind people out there. Under most circumstances we can discern shades, but when you mix certain colors together (like, say red, orange, green, and brown) it becomes very difficult. Having those colors in very thin lines only makes it harder.

I have lots of trouble on the Secret Invasion map for similar reasons; it is very difficult for me to tell the hindering terrain from the blocking terrain because of the colors used.

The Hawkworld map looks cool, and despite the color confusion it's easy to tell which were meant as elevated and which were meant as "open air." But it definitely raises an issue to consider going forward.

I've gotta say it reminds me of all the old platforming video games i grew up with. you know the ones where if you missed your jump and fell into the water/chasm/goo/acid/lava you had to start at the beginning of the level. classic.
It just feels like someone had some fun with the maps, and considering all of the unique interesting SP's on most of the figures in the new set as well, It shows me that NECA/wizkids do care about the game. I'm not saying they get everything right (dear god that superman sculpt...:ermm:) or that all the new SP's are good, that's all up for debate on a different thread. They do seem like people who want to have fun with it and push in new directions, which is always a good thing.

Non-carried objects in Open Air squares are removed from the map. Open Air squares are otherwise treated as clear terrain.

I just realized you can do a turn 1 alter ego of your choice on Hawkworld!!!

TK Eddie Brock onto the Open Air square. Have him take a click of unavoidable damage after every action resolves (including free actions) but don't place him back to the starting area until you arrive on the correct Alter Ego click. Finally give Brock a power action and change into Anti-Venom on turn 1!

These are quite creative. Very nice work. It will be interesting to see how they play - but it will be a very unique experience, that is for sure.

Airport: The People-Mover is really neat but the layout of the airport is VERY wide open. I don't like wide open maps. There is definitely a "better side" on that map, which I appreciate. Hint: Take the side closest to the desk - always.

Hawkworld - so abusive and nasty. This is gonna be like fighting on a tightrope.

Force Blast is gonna rule.

Offensive TK - ouch!

Outwit is gonna paralyze fliers.

Quake is 10x nastier.

And the activation click is 0 problem. Pick him up, drop him off the side and he comes back "activated" and cleared.

Feats: maneuver is even MORE borken, as it that is possible.

Characters - Someone has probably said it already... "BAMF!"

An airport is one of those maps I've been waiting a long time to see. Maybe I just had my hopes to high but I am a little disappointed by it. I think the chairs take up too much space and I would love to see some of that space go towards shops or maybe even a boarding section that allowed you to enter part of the plane. I do love the conveyor belt though.

I really don't read DC comics so I don't know much about Thangar but this map looks great. I also love the low gravity for it. I normally perfer maps that are more maze like with walls that block line of fire but I think this will be a lot of fun to play form time to time.
