I'm pretty stoked. The last one was great.
Just as long as they get all the same actors. It was so well cast. Personally, I'd love to see them do a TV series with that cast, but I know it's probably not going to happen.
It's getting me excited for the new Co-op board game though. :nervous:

Star Wars has always been the more popular, but I feel like that is starting to shift the other way at long last, mostly due to George Lucas' greed in trying to squeeze every last penny he can out of the Star Wars franchise. At the same time, Abrams has re-invented the Star Trek franchise and made it cool again (or maybe for the first time? At least that is true for many).
Personally I've preferred Trek since I discovered it in my teens with the Next Gen. It tends to be smarter most of the time, with some interesting moral lessons thrown in. I also enjoy the symbolism in Trek.
And just for fun, here's some match-ups:
Han Solo vs Kirk
Milennium Falcon vs Enterprise
Death Star vs Borg Cube
Chewie vs Worf
Bobba Fett vs Data
Vader vs Khan
heh.

<- The name says it all.
Anyway, I don't suppose you've heard any of the news about who the villain will be, have you? One of the people listed a number of characters from TOS, then said that the main villain would be one of those he just said.

If it's as good as the last one, I'm down.
I wouldn't consider myself a Star Trek fan, but DS9, Wrath of Khan, and Abram's last flick were very enjoyable.
I agree that the cast was awesome in that last installment and the movie was very well done.

<--- Beam me up, Scotty!
The last movie was a great. I just hope Abrams cuts down on the lens flare this time around.

I think the story was myeh to huh?!? The casting was fantastic except for Kirk, who's petulant baby face I wanted to smack in most scenes.
Zachary Quinto was fantastic as Spock. He stole every scene he was in and made the movie watchable.

If it comes with the same fast-paced, ignore the plot holes style of story, then it'll probably dazzle as well as the first did. Likely with 100% less Winona.
Where TNG was frequently capable of being a meal, JJ-Trek is all candy and no cavities. And I can live with that.
Star Trek has always had room for both filling and junk food entries. I hope Abrams can do both. Here's wishing!

As a Kid I was a Star Wars fan, I still like the originals and some of the books, I don't know if I'm able to say I like Trek more, but the last movie was rather entertaining if a bit shallow, and I loved DS9.
Also 2nd one will have Klignons so theres that.
Also Matchups...why not
Solo
Enterprise durr
Death Star
Worf (Sorry Chewie)
Data
Vader

I'll go see the sequel, but I'm not going to get too excited about it. The last one fell into the guilty pleasure category. Lots of fun and action, but with very little substance, and story holes large enough to suck down a supernova.

Enjoyed the Abrams reboot, so this news pleases me. :classic:

Having watched Star Wars (WITHOUT "Episode 4" in the title) as a kid, I was a huge Star Wars fan right up to the point that The Phantom Menace was released. After putting up with Uncle George's shenanigans for decades, I felt seriously disappointed. I could not believe what he gave the fans as "prequels" while having such a wealth and grandiose scope of talent at his bidding. I sat through the "Special Edition" versions of the original Trilogy, but will refuse to go see the 3-D "re-enhanced" tripe that will be churned out by Lucasfilm.
Star Trek, on the other hand, has become better and better for me with the passage of time. Although I prefer the old school movies (see sig below), I enjoyed Abrams' re-boot. If he can do it in a second Star Trek movie, I'll be a happy camper. (Though the new hawtness does not compare in my heart with the classic TOS cast.)
So far, the best Trek for my buck has been the remastered episodes of the 60's Star Trek, with CGI exterior shots and enhanced special effects. The icing on that cake? Every episode for all 3 seasons is presented in original and new, improved formats. (Which I take as an awesome gesture to the die-hard fans that want their original eps just the way that they watched them for the first time.)

They have to keep the attention spans of youth today occupied with action and intrigue. No offense intended to anyone, it's just the way movies are made now. It's no longer about the story, but the actions that create it. I did enjoy the new film, but as charlesx has said, my liking is with the older TOS cast, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying Star Trek of any kind. Besides Enterprise.

Well, that can't go without response.
HS v. Kirk: Luck vs. Luck + Strategy. Kirk wins.
MF vs. Enterprise: Are you kidding? Enterprise has at least 50x the firepower and shielding. MF might get away, that's the best I'd give them.
DS v. BC: Deathstar. One hit kill. The cube's not much on offense.
Chewie vs. Worf: Tough call. Both primal warriors with rage thrown in. I'll give it to Worf for superior intelligence and training.
BF vs. Data: Bobba. I don't even like the guy, but Data's just another 'droid.
Vader vs. Khan: Khan starts every combat bragging about his superior nature. He'll be choked to death before he can complete his first monologue.

The turbo boosted action is fine, but lots of writers create action stories that make sense. As fun as Star Trek was, the story didn't make any sense.
How precisely does a supernova become a threat that can destory the galaxy? Supernovas occur all the time. They destroy anything in their own star system, but that's all. Even if this was some super-ultra-mega-supernova, the blast wave is still travelling at less than the speed of light, and would take decades just to reach the nearest star system.
If all it takes to create an artificial black hole is a tiny bit of red matter, why does Spock bring along enough of the stuff to destroy every planet in the galaxy? Shouldn't something this dangerous be highly regulated? It should certainly be protected by more than just one guy in a tiny ship that can't even fight off a civilian mining vessell.
Why isn't the moon that Spock is marooned on destroyed by the black hole? If the black hole gave out right after destroying Vulcan, then why doesn't the moon's orbit fail when the gravity well ordinarily created by Vulcan is no longer there? It should have gone flying off in whatever direction it was headed when the gravity well vanished.
Why is the fleet being sent to Vulcan being crewed with cadets from Star Fleet Academy? Where are the regular crews at?
Well, that can't go without response.
HS v. Kirk: Luck vs. Luck + Strategy. Kirk wins.
Bah, Han shot first.
MF vs. Enterprise: Are you kidding? Enterprise has at least 50x the firepower and shielding. MF might get away, that's the best I'd give them.
No arguments here. This is a ridiculously one-sided matchup. Now, Enterprise vs. Star Destroyer has sparked more fanboy debates than Superman vs. Hulk.
DS v. BC: Deathstar. One hit kill. The cube's not much on offense.
This is harder than you suggest. The borg cube is MUCH faster than the death star, and it's unlikely the Death Star could get a single solid hit on the cube until the cube was seriously damaged, which I'm not sure the Death Star could accomplish. The Cube's power draining technology is going to be devastating to the Death Star's main weapons. Mostly it comes down to whether the Death Star's small-ships are capable of doing enough damage to the cube to slow it down enough for the Death Star to win. I'd bet on not. Despite the death Star's seriously out-massing and hypothetically out-gunning the cube, the cube will win.
Chewie vs. Worf: Tough call. Both primal warriors with rage thrown in. I'll give it to Worf for superior intelligence and training.
It depends on when in the story the fight takes place. Worf practically defines "the guy who gets beat up at the start of the story to show how tough the opponent is." (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWorfEffect) Chewie, however, never really does more in the movies than look intimidating and hard-handle some stormtroopers, but the Ewoks managed the latter, so it's really hard to judge either of them being a sure win here.
BF vs. Data: Bobba. I don't even like the guy, but Data's just another 'droid.
Depends on how they're fighting. Data has superior strength and aiming abilities, and Bobba's intimidation value will be useless. The bounty hunter primarily seems to attack from surprise. In a straight-up fight, I'd put money on Data. In a hunt, Bobba.
Vader vs. Khan: Khan starts every combat bragging about his superior nature. He'll be choked to death before he can complete his first monologue.
Khan's a planner more than a fighter. Vader for sure in direct combat.

Data vs Boba Fett- Depends on how they're fighting. Data has superior strength and aiming abilities, and Bobba's intimidation value will be useless. The bounty hunter primarily seems to attack from surprise. In a straight-up fight, I'd put money on Data. In a hunt, Bobba.
Even in a straight up fight, Data cannot win. It is not in his personality to attack first. Even after being attacked, he has always continued to try and end the conflict peacefully. He is extremely disinclined towards fighting.
Boba Fett on the other hand, has no such hang-ups. He's shoot Data without thinking twice about it, and he carries enough firepower to put the android down.
Are we including personalities?
In that case, the battle between Worf and Chewbacca is a draw, as they both go off to have a beer. : - )

Are we including personalities?
Without a personality, nobody would care about any of these characters. If personality isn't an issue, then Data, Lore and that other android from the last TNG movie would all be equal. What fun is that?

Yeah to me Zachary had that same effect on Heroes and I don't know if it's been revealed on the forums but the next Trek film is supposed to be a combination of Space Seed & Wrath of Khan.

As a kid I was a huge fan of Star Wars. I watched Trek with my dad sometimes - and it was okay - just not as action packed.
I watched the middle years of Next Generation and DS-9. I tried Enterprise but it wasn't too my liking enough to become regular.
I saw some of the movies and found them either okay or decent.
Then Star Wars returned and I made all the excuses a good fan could for the first one - but secretly I knew it sucked. I threw away my money on the next too and pondered long and hard on what went wrong.
I thought I just outgrew it - and watched the original Star Wars again - but no, it was still an amazing movie.
To make sure my children were well-rounded Sci-Fi fans, we watched the entire Star Trek films from 2 through Abrams over the past summer. I didn't recall how much better every single movie was compared to the "new Star Wars" movies. Even the weak ones had great moments.
I think part of the strength is the solid understanding of who each character is. And, I have to admit, Captain Kirk is an amazing character. He is able to will his way to success thanks to the skill of his crew. Its a perfect mesh of leadership and team.
Star Wars is about individuals and their personal agendas. Sure they help out sometimes, but there is something special about a team working together to achieve something.
I thought Abrams take was interesting and had some real clever moments. I thought the mining ship was a little overdone and that "its unstoppable / no wait, this is how we easily kill it" ending is always a poor out in any story. But endings are always a weakness for Abrams (and a lot of creators).
I would consider seeing the next Trek in the theatres...

Boba got dropped by a blind guy.
Data wins easily.
Boba got dropped by a blind guy.
Data wins easily.
Well there's that and THE SUPER SPEED, SUPER STRENGTH, and the fact his body is highly resistant to injury. It took a bolt from a WARP REACTOR to kill Data but Wesley Crusher went back in time with The Traveler and prevented it from happening. I think it would take multiple blaster hits to drop Data but all Boba would get is one shot before Data ran over and popped him like a grape. Then there is the fact Data can make trillions calculations per second, employ strategies from a million generals, and pretty much know a hundred thousand outcomes to the fight before Boba can even decide what type of ammo to use.

Ah, yes, the old Star Trek vs. Star Wars internet debate...
...only the true uber-geeks know that there is no debate: Star Trek is 500 years or so in our future, whereas Star Wars was "Long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away". Duh. Apples to oranges, anyone?

OOOOOOHHHH!
If they can pull off the magic of their Spock replacement and get a great Khan I am all on board. Big shoes to fill though. Physical menace joined to sophistication and exoticism isn't exactly easy to come by.

As Star Trek has shown no examples of time travel I must concur.
