View Full Version : Is DC 75th the best DC set yet?

I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of playable figures, the variety of powers, and the overall quality of this set. Crisis, Legacy, and numerous other sets have been touted as the "best", but how does this new set stack up?

In terms of DC sets it seems to be a solid tie between this and Origin for me.
Favorite overall set is still a toss-up between Supernova and WoS for me, though.
It is pretty good (top 3 or 5), but for me HoT is still the best overall, but Origin is the best DC set..

I had to vote Jonah Hex just to be a wise acre.

I went with Crisis as the best ever. But DC75 is close up there. I like DC 75 a bit more but I don't know if it can top Crisis.

Crisis with better teen titans, better sinestro, chase supes, and freakin Spectre... sorry, still not beating Crisis, but definitely #2 DC set!!
Why are people saying HoT and WoS?? it says best DC set...

Well, it couldn't quite beat Origin, for me, and while I like lanterns alright, this had a few too many. And seriously, Dominator generics, while I'm still waiting for Thanagarian Hawksoldiers?
It's nice that there were no 'Vapors' in the super rares. Pretty much any of these that you pull extras of, somebody will want to trade for. I still have an extra Vapor. This set, probably Wonder Twins or White Lantern Ice is as close as it gets to that, and there will be plenty of takers for those.
So, I'm happy with it, but Origin had a new Hawkman, a new Atom, and Mister Miracle for the first time, and it will be really hard for another set to beat that (yeah B&B had those, but those were about the only things that kept that set from completely sucking, for me).

Yep. Particularly because these polls aren't exactly important in the scheme of things.
Actually, I'd argue that NO poll is exactly important in the scheme of things, so there it is.
Picked AA. Even though I have the set I missed going through new boosters for that set. I keep going through 75th and I do like the pieces and they hav played very well. HOWEVER, Superman sculpt...(both the white lantern and uncommon) There's nothing that I can type or say or show via pic that can discribe how much it hurts. The set is a GREAT looking model and Superman is the ugly busted nose on her face.

It seems with every set we get a poll asking if "this is the best set ever" and typically people vote "yes." So when GSX is released, I predict a poll showing it as the best set ever...until the next set.

Why the opposition to opening discussion about set quality over the years, as well as gauging response to a new set?

I'm not opposing anything other than people who tend to evaluate HCRealms user polls using the same criteria as, say, Gallup polls.
I'm down with your poll. :)

i would say crisis is the best DC set ever, sorry 75th.
75th is good though, and very close. 2nd, MAYBE 3rd. Arkham asylum was GREAT.
and IMHO, i think secret invasion is the best marvel set we've ever gotten, followed CLOSELY byt HoT.

Crisis, AA, and Origin are all up there for me (and CD can't be overlooked either...), but this is the BEST DC set to date I think. Gap-fillers for many teams, a very inventive design for Beast Boy (a character that needed a remake BADLY...now where's my Cyborg...?), a decent mix of power and finesse pieces, solid tie-in to the big DC storyline of the past few years, and chase figures that are actually ATTAINABLE. Yes, this is pretty much the ideal set for me. If it had Freedom Fighters and maybe a LOSH member or two it would be perfect, but nothing's perfect... :)

I voted for Origins but now feel like Crisis was the best DC set. I loved Origins because of the great JSA figures I still use today, but feel like Crisis had a great mix of Infinite Crisis themed figs & a healthy mix of others.

I usually dont buy Dc, always a Mavel fan. Although I DO participate in Sealed events and trade for Batman figs as well as any cheap "must-haves" Maybe AA is a better answer?
Also, I would have liked to vote for Jonah Hex ONLY because of the flavor description. But I will give a serious answer... this time lol
It's a little early to be asking this question don't you all think. give it 3 weeks

The latest is the greatest.
Usually.
I really like Justice League as that was the first set I started collecting and playing HeroClix. So, sentimental value.
I am not impressed with DC75th at all. A handful of figures I want but thats about it. We did NOT need another Hal, nothing against him. And by the way the digital sculpts aren't that great. DC 75th gets a 3 out of 10 in my book because it had too many repeated figs. we truely DO NOT NEED!

Crisis, is to me the best set ever.
In terms of DC sets I would rank the top 5 in this manner:
Crisis
Origin
AA
DC75
Legacy
Honorable mention: Collateral Damage

Some of the sculpts (Bane, Superman SR, Atrocitus & Guy) are the best I've seen with any set (Marvel, DC, Horror & Indy). So lovin' the powers and abilities that make even the common pieces very playable. So at this time I have to say yes for number 1 DC set (yes even over Crisis which is a personal fav). Now just getting ready for Giant Size X-Men since it seems that since Neca took over they have put some quality sets together.

As a JSA man I voted Origins. DC75 is a great set no doubt but Jakeem, Wildcat, Hawkman, and Green Lantern FTW. Dial wise DC75 set is probably the best so far! Not too many (if any) duds. They all seem useful for their points.

HoT and WoS are better, not only in dials but in quality.
1/3 of these figures are UGLY!
I agree, man. The set has some great playable pieces and some cool characters, but a bunch of them look bad. I'm also not thrilled that my WL Green Arrow and SR Wonder Woman are missing limbs!
Crisis is the best DC set IMO, but I actually really liked JL and AA too!
EDIT: Wow, I forgot about Origin for some reason. That set was amazing!
I started off collecting because of cool sculpts and around AV actually started playing. With the exception of BatB the dials always get better with each set it seems (sorry not a fan of Duo/Double base). The most important part of a figure to me is the Sculpt and the good one's in this set are few and far between. I absolutely hate that WKNECA has decided that they rarity of a figure should dictate how half %$$#@ the sculpts should be. Just because it's common doesn't mean it needs to look like garbage. Oh and to finish my rant if a speedster decides to stand still they do so with style. Oh and since I'm a stickler for sculpt, I went CD :)
Crisis was the best set ever in heroclixs. But DC75 is very very good. WOS sculpts are awful... like hypertime awful :P

Rep to you, sir.
I'm happy not to be the only one who cares more about sculpt and character than I do about dials. I realize this doesn't make sense when trying to win a game, but I got into clix because I love comics, not as much because I love strategy games (though I do love games as well).

I am still waiting for my figures to arrive, but I have to say when the new hotness is only pulling 30 some per cent of the vote it makes me worry a bit. Usually the new set cleans up, because it's new.
Hopefully this is unfounded ugly superman based worry and when I get them in hand I will see that while maybe not as good as Crisis or AA, it is still an awesome set.

Believe me when I say that while this set has a couple of truly detestably-sculpted figures (Animal Man, in my opinion, is the worst), it also has a good deal of figures that look absolutely amazing (Bane, Larfleeze, Sinestro, etc).
Anyway, I love a lot of figures in this set and am excited to play them, and I did consider voting DC75 as the best set ever. My initial thought was that it wasn't, until then I went over the list of sets and found that DC75 is, all things, considered, really strong.
In the end, though, I voted for Arkham Asylum, because I like to encourage great sculpts. That was (for the most part) a beautiful set, and full of my beloved Batman Enemies as well.

Amen to this.
The Sculpts are about 75% of the appeal to me, followed by about 20% on the character selection (even with an iffy sculpt I love getting a new never before clixed piece) and then maybe 5% on the dial, but honestly that might even be a bit high.
I barely have the time to play anymore and when I do I really don't expect to clean house anyway. This is the only game of this kind that I have ever had an inkling to play, and it is only because of the pieces.
Even when I play it I feel like I am just tolerating one of the most foolish and clunky gaming systems I know (and I play A LOT of fairly fiddly european board games), but despite the poorly planned rules I get a lot of fun out of using just seeing my superheroes on the battlefield and all that comes with that.

I used to think Crisis was the best but 75th is the new best DC set for me. Cool figures! More chases and more often! Yeah!

The new Hal is freaking awesome, both dial and sculpt, and this is coming from someone who wished the character had stayed dead. Totally worth the remake, ditto for Alan Scott, John Stewart, Barry Allen and all the rest of the repeats. I even like all the Supermen!
I love the new set, and am surprised by how well it turned out. I could whine about how some of the sculpts are meh but others are FANTASTIC and I'm glad.
this is the first DC set i bought a brick of, so i am gonna have to say yes
though i wasn't around though JL, Crisis, AA and didn't really have much interest in BB

For character selection and hype - Crisis
For Quality of sculpts and overall look - CD or Origins
I judge a good d/c set soley by the power of the best superman-batman... i had high hopes of a common superman figure that was broken (wos mad me think a few would be.) but allas this set is well balanced and i dont think any figure is broken... so I' went with crisis as the best set..... but not because of balance, or desighn, but because of the chases.... Wizkids common a broken supes.. common... lots of new players could compete with a broken figure... and eventualy theyl be able to talk trash about how broken figures require no skill to play.... but i digress... crisis #1 unleashed #2 legacy #3 arkahm #4
Awesome set, but how do you beat Hypertime:
The set debuted:
Huntress
Robin
Hawkman
Harley Quinn
Catwoman
Riddler
Aquaman
Blue Beetle
Booster Gold
Nightwing
Beast Boy
Steel
Gorilla Grodd
Solomon Grundy
Black Manta
Hawk
Bane
Doomsday
Joker
Plastic Man
Flash
Batman
Superman
Darkseid
and Jay Garrick
As well as gave us Poison, Imperv, Willpower, and Close Combat Expert.

I don't know if any were the best, for me anyway. I'm not a huge DC fan so most of my knowledge and interest is based on the TV shows. Icon's was a great set to me, so I once would have called it the best set. But not now, many of it's dials are vastly outdated. There have been some great figures since but not really many sets that grabbed me enough to consider buying in bulk.

I prefer Legacy for the character selection and variation between the REVs and LEs.
Collateral Damage! Strictly in terms of the quality of the sculpts, this set is the best of the DC sets...Guardian, Ragman, Clayface, Crimson Avenger, Black Mask, Vixen, etc., etc. Every figure in this set is beautifully sculpted and dynamically posed...having said that, I would like to share a concern I have about the newer sets featuring a superabundance of "posing" figures: Hands on hips, statuesque. These poses do not faithfully represent the action-packed essence of the comics these characters are drawn from. Certainly, Wizkids have created some stand-out figurines in the more recent sets, but when they start releasing "Speedster" characters posed in stand-still positions, I start to worry (Impulse? Standing around? Why?) Also, characters you'd hope would be in big action poses: Molten Man, from WOS, comes to mind...Iron Man from the same set...Iron Patriot, as well...Plasmus (spelling) from AA (Such a missed opportunity for a great fig! Why would a shape changing super-villian ever stand around like he was waiting in line at the DMV?)... figures that I, regretfully, will not attempt to collect because of their static and curious stances.
In addition, releasing a figure with two different paint jobs and naming it as two different characters...this is a dreadful idea, really. I know that there is a precedent with earlier sets, one piece released as R/E/V, and the same piece also released as a "Named" Unique, but creating an Easy Company soldier and then slapping a Sgt. badge on the helmet of the same figure and calling him Sgt. Rock...this smacks of a cheap rip-off. Peter Parker = Ben Reilly from WOS, also...this is a bad trend, and I emphatically urge Wizkids to reconsider continuing to make figs in this fashion! Dynamic poses & great sculpts are what keeps me, and many others, coming back to Heroclix. I have been collecting/playing this game for over six years and plan on continuing...I hope Wizkids keep working to make this fantastic game as fantastic as it can be. Now, I'm off to go buy heaps of DC 75th Anniversary...GO HEROCLIX
Who are the two dudes that voted for Hypertime? Come on, now.

I loved Arkham Asylum, but it left a bad taste in my mouth due to having that Chase Batman being a marquee character (on the booster art no less) and yet still having the designation of chase.
It offends me.
Crisis was a good set, but the special powers were still a little flawed and the lack of the newer abilities kinda hurt the playability of figures like Darkseid and whatnot.
I picked DC 75 because we got 2 Batmans, 2 Supermans, decent Green Lanterns and Flashes, and a variety of playable dials.
Crisis clearly is the number one set. And I even got the Brick figure

It is, pound for pound, a really great set.
If Capt Comet was 130 points and
the Wonder Twins were 80 points,
then this might have been the greatest DC set ever.
As with Crisis and Ark Asy,
this Set will be really fun for Sealed.

DC Crisis was the best set.
DC 75 is silly at best, boasting:

*a "chase" configuration that makes it nigh-impossible to complete the set

I'm not sure I can say it's the best DC set ever. It's a really great set, but does everything new and shiny have to be the best thing ever? DC has had some really great sets. I think from a game/sculpt standpoint at the time of release Legacy was the best.

I got a soft spot for Collateral Damage. I think because it really felt like they made an effort with the sculpts; Blue Devil standing in the firey rubble, Black Mask standing on the scaffolding, Azreal leaping over the fire, Clayface smashing through the bank wall. Even though I wasn't familiar with a lot of the characters, they were fun.

The gloves were taken off for DC 75th in terms of special powers, even more innovative dial designs, and close attention given to capturing the 'spirit' or 'flavor' of the characters and their personalities. In terms of the look of the set, it's good, but some of the best sculpts that we've had are in past sets (Cosmic Justice Martian Manhunter, or Man of Steel from Collateral Damage, for example). When compared to the experimental, and somewhat tentative approach of JLA (and Avengers) with regards to special powers and 'holding back' some of the characters, 75th is leaps and bounds ahead. The game will only grow in a positive manner with set treatments like this. Thank you very much Wizkids/NECA!

1. People like Apes. And we had to get Gorilla City generics eventually...the city has been in too many DC storylines to keep ignoring it.
2. They are a strong tie-in to the biggest DC storyline of the past 10 years. I'd rather have fewer of them and more Freedom Fighters and LOSH members, but it's hard to argue against tie-ins to major recent storylines.
3. I haven't completed a set including chases since chases were introduced. At least this set pretty much guarantees that you'll get one if you buy a brick. Even though I've bought at least a case and a half from every set that had chases, I've NEVER pulled a chase before this set (unless you count the Zombie Hulk my brother pulled in the Supernova case that we shared). THAT is a bad chase configuration.
There are some silly elements in every set. At least in this set the duo figure makes sense. Wonder Twin Powers...ACTIVATE! :)
I'm not sure I can say it's the best DC set ever. It's a really great set, but does everything new and shiny have to be the best thing ever? DC has had some really great sets. I think from a game/sculpt standpoint at the time of release Legacy was the best.
Well, there weren't many saying that BatB was the "Best DC Set Ever" when it first came out, so I don't think it's all because it's new and shiny. But I'll grant you that it has competition for Best DC Set (with Origin and Crisis, in my opinion, with AA getting an honorable mention as well).

This is exactly why I think the set is so strong. Repped. The character selection isn't perfect (though it's pretty good), the sculpts aren't the most detailed or dynamic that we've EVER gotten (though there are no "potatohead" sculpts that I can see), but the overall design of the mechanics (dials, SPs, points costs) is VERY strong. If NECAWK continues along this trend, I think we're in store for a lot of fun in the future!

Wow, that is really bad luck. Sorry to hear that. Was it a sealed brick? Because I haven't heard of that happening out of a sealed brick in reports of over 100 cases. Not saying it didn't happen...collation can still be screwed up, even with set bricks, but that is bad luck. :(
If you got decent SRs, you can probably trade those for many of the WLs, if that's all you really care about. Hal Jordan, Green Lantern, Doomsday, Sinestro are all going for equivalent prices to most WLs on Ebay, and will probably trade as such. If you only want WL Superman and WL Hal, you might be out of luck though...

I'm lovin' the playability! The low point figs like crimson avenger and Mr. terrific are extremely useful for their point totals. I'm also loving that the majority of the figures have traits that, I find, really reflect their power in the comics.
I put Crisis. I will say that Crisis and DC 75th are the only cases I have bought since Avengers.
Crisis had so many good pieces, but thats not to say that DC 75 isn't just as good if not better. Haven't played my stuff to find out.
