View Full Version : Search for the Mighty Plot Device: A Defenders of the Realms Game

Yes, I've buckled. Lets get this thing going.
Search for the Mighty Plot Device: A Realms RPG.
This is the part ripped from Jack. And JKL.
Character Creation
A player has three stats: Brains, Body and Smarm.
Brains are used in conjunction with activities regarding intelligence, planning, logic, etc. Wisdom and Int.
Body is used with physical activities. Think Con, Str, and Dex rolled into one. Except that you're all more or less one hit point wonders anyway.
Smarm/Shmooze/Slick/Sass/etc. is used to affect things through the force of your personality. Charisma.
In addition, at the beginning a player is be able to choose an attribute This can be pretty much anything they can think of, as long as it's physically capable for them to do it/they have possession of it.
For example, they could have Watch Television or Jog For an Unreasonably Long Time. The restriction ensures that no one starts the game with Summon Gojira.
Addendum: Be careful what you choose, as I may make you justify your use of your attribute in an action. For example "Practices Karate in Inappropriate Situations" would not grant you a stat bonus during a kung fu fight, as a kung fu fight would be an entirely appropriate place to use karate. I do this because it is my belief that placing a few restrictions encourages creativity. Feel free to pick a creative or strange attribute, just know that you will likely need to be equally as creative and strange using it. Impress me.
You have 12 points to distribute amongst the stats, with a maximum starting stat of 7.
Example:
Player McGee
Body: 3
Brains:4
Shmooze: 5
Attribute Booster Cherry Picker
How to Play
The game effectively works by using your stats on keywords in the writeup. In this sense, it's a kind of combination between an RPG and collective storytelling.
For example, if I wrote the following paragraph:
The castle walls were dingy, lined with torches that cast flickering shadows across the cobblestones. The Orc Guard, aware of your presence, draws his curved sword and bellows. "YOU LOT AIN'T GONNA GET PASS ME!"
In this instance, the GM has signified via bolding that the castle walls, torches, cobblestones, Orc Guard and curved sword are all eligible to be interacted with. (Which makes this also kinda like a point and click adventure game)
To take an action, you describe your action and specify what attribute you are using in conjunction with the keyword.
For example, "I curl up into a little ball and weep, hoping that the orc will show pity on such a lowly creature." (brains) would be an unmodified Brains attack roll on the Orc.
Please bold the stat that you are using to make the action. The point of this is twofold. It makes it quite clear this is your official action, and makes it so I don't have to choose which stat you will use.
Much like Heroclix, the keywords have defense values (sometimes secret, sometimes public) that the attack rolls are compared to. For example, the Orc's value is 12. If the weeper's Brains value was 4, it would be exactly like rolling a 4 Attack Value on a 12 Defense Value in Heroclix. If the rolls succeds, it's assumed that the attack worked. If it fails, it's assumed that it did not. Much like Heroclix, snake eyes is an epic fail and boxcars is an epic success.
Using an Attribute is like BCF: you roll a die and add the result to your stat.
Gaining Stats and Attributes Pay attention to this, as it has changed from previous games.
Every time you succeed in an action, you gain 1 Experience Point.
5 Experience Points = a one point increase in a stat
10 Experience Points = An Inventory Stake Voucher
15 Experience Points = a new trait, the type of which shall be determined by the GM.
Note: this XP system is effectively in beta. JK's NOTE: Additional XP possibly given for things I find particularly creative (or amusing). Additionally, you will only be able to XP exchange at certain points in the game. Don't worry, you'll know where. TBB's Note: Traits will be handled differently in this game. Attributes will always allow for a d6 bonus. Objects found in game will not offer bonuses. Traits will have bonuses or effects specific to that trait.
Taking your turns
Each day allows for each player to take one action. If you do not take an action, you do not take an action; it's no skin off the GM's nose. Subs are allowed if planned for.
Enter Command: Examine
If you wish, you can do a general scan action to get a sense of the place you're in. This may reveal additional keywords. ONLY ONE PERSON CAN DO THIS AT A TIME. In addition, this action does not receive an XP point. You're effectively taking one for the team in exchange for information.
Enter Command: Examine Keyword
You may make a Intelligence roll against a keyword in an attempt to discover it's stats. No XP will be awarded for a successful stat scan.
Also, if you want to be a bastard, and keep your action secret from your team mates, you may submit it via pm. Please try not to overdo this, however.
No "Assist" actions, ya crumb bums! You guys need to explore a variety of possibilities!
TBB Notes: This game will be a mix of feel between JackA's game, and JKL's. I will not actively out to get you, but you are capable of dying. More on the consequences of death later.
The setting and plot of this game is related to, but slightly different than, the previous games. There are several game mechanics related to the setting of the game which will only be reveled after the setting is.
I am looking for 6 players. Any more would be too much for me to handle. I am also working 6 nights a week until the new year, so at times I may be too tired to do a write-up in the first few weeks. I will, however, still be watching the thread and keeping an eye on what people are planning. Fear not, i am quite devoed to keeping this going. (though if someone still wanted to start a game so it could fail before this one started, I wouldn't be opposed.)

I'd just like to clarify now (so that there's no confusion later based on the name) that "Lord of the Dance Champions" is really just a fancy/cute/funny way of saying something along the lines of 'worlds greatest dancer', rather than being intended to be limited to just Riverdancing. Just so we're clear on that.
Also, I'm a tad disturbed right now that I happen to have the highest body score. At a level of 4.
If we don't get a fifth/sixth player who picks Body as their main stat, we could be in a lot of trouble when we come up against a situation that requires a lot of muscle.
Or maybe we'll just all be forced to really stretch our creative muscles. <_<

I wouldn't be opposed to just having brains and brawn, as with my trait creating catapults (out of a dead body and some twigs) might require more "body" than "brains" to operate. Not sure.

***Prologue Section***
The five of you find yourselves in a classy speakeasy. The second floor is covered wall to wall with bookshelves, and overlooks the commons area on the ground floor. Various patrons sit or stand conversing with one another, or drink at the bar, while in the back of the room, four figures (http://www.ggsgamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Poker-Night-At-The-Inventory-Trailer-560x293.jpg) play an intense game of poker. The Host approaches you.
"Greetings gentlemen, and welcome to the Inventory! As I haven't seen you around here before, I can only assume you are first timers. Feel free to make yourselves at home. Enjoy a drink, or challenge another of our patrons to a game of chance. Enjoy yourselves, that is what exclusive gaming establishments are for! If you have Inventory Stake Vouchers, any of our patrons would be pleased to gamble for them. However, a word of warning. If you would please avoid bothering our high stakes players in the back, (He gestures to the four playing poker) that would be most wise. Also, that gentleman there asked to speak with you."
The host gestures to a suited man holding a briefcase standing by the book shelves.
"Good evening, gentlemen, and good luck."
***Game on!***
Rule Clarification: I said a rule would be explained once the game started, so here it is. XP can be traded for stat boosts at anytime, while traits can only be acquired in the Inventory. You may trade in 10 XP for a Inventory Stake Voucher. Inventory Stake Vouchers can be used to gamble against patrons of the Inventory in hopes of winning a trait. Alternatively, you may pay 15 XP to buy a trait outright. Traits may be used in place of a Stake Voucher to gamble, but if you lose, you lose your previous trait.
More on gambling when we get to it.
You will return to the Inventory before continuing on to each world, or if you die. Feel free to ask questions if you are confused. You may now take your opening actions.

Skykushryd approaches the suited man and inquires why he wished to speak with the group. The suited man replies, speaking with strange mannerisms.
"You no doubt... wonder how it is you came to this place? In addition to being home to more baser recreations, this establishment is also a crosspoint of the multiverse. As you may or may or may not be... aware, reality itself has become... fluid of late. Pieces of reality itself have gone missing, which I'm sure you agree is... worrisome. However, a greater threat exists. On their own, pieces of reality effect wild, uncontrolled changes. These changes are a crime against the nature of the universe, but... such violations are not always cause for alarm. Reality has a way of... sorting itself out. However, there exists a device, that when powered by said pieces of reality, may reshape all that is. Use of such a machine would undoubtedly cause a catastrophic event. One which existence could not recover from. It is for this reason that you have been brought here. At one time, the device was kept in safekeeping by those ignorant of it's true power. Due to... unforeseen circumstances, the device was lost. It now travels the multiverse, it's journey, shaking loose the very pieces of reality that fuel it. It is through these pieces that you will track it. Time is of the essence. When the device runs out of fuel, it will halt, and once more it be vulnerable to capture. I have faith you will find it before then. When you are ready to proceed, simply leave through the front entrance, and your feet will be on the path. Stay... (the man chuckles eerily) safe."
The suited man turns and walks slowly towards the exit. When his back is turned, Wade lunges at the man's briefcase. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, for him, he catches his foot on the ground and stumbles, falling on his face. The suited man turns and glances back as Wade clutches his bleeding nose, makes a sound of disapproval, and then quite suddenly, fades from existence. (Critical failure on Wade's part.)
Stranger and Pax both wander down the stairs to the commons area. Stranger attempts to loot the bar, only to be met by the suspicious gaze of the bartender. The bartender puts down the glass he was polishing and reaches under the bar while saying "You need something?" Rather than be met by a shotgun to the face, Stranger grabs a handful of beer nuts from the bowl on the counter and shakes his head. The bartender nods. "good choice."
Pax attempts to convince the patrons that the rabbit-like creature at the poker table has been stealing from him. None of them seem surprised. None of them also seem inclined to do anything about it. One of the patrons, an Australian man with a rifle over his shoulder, says "I've been pissing in his drink. what goes around comes around."
Space Jawa goes to the books shelves and begins to examine them. He finds a book with a strange symbol (http://homedir-c.libsyn.com/podcasts/ed50d7c41919737fb5c66007d7f447de/4d113bff/wired/images/Lambda.gif) drawn on the spine. Upon opening it, he finds it's been hollowed out to make room for five Inventory Stake Vouchers.
Sky, Stranger, and Pax earn 1 XP each.

The BoyBlunder
12/22/2010, 01:15
then I suppose I should tell you more about the patrons to see who you wish to challenge.
There are currently six patrons in the Inventory, not counting those playing poker.
An Australian with a rifle over his shoulder sits at a table with a man in a cowboy hat and welding glasses. Drinking at the bar is a military man, while a man in a white lab coat stands talking to a strange biped with five eyes, and small arm sprouting out of it's chest. A young woman in an orange jumpsuit is pushing the buttons on the jukebox, but hasn't inserted any coins.
The challenged player (aka the patron) chooses the game. You may refuse and challenge someone else. Gambling is not an action proper, more of a game mechanic, so it does not award XP. You may, however, take an action in an attempt to improve your odds. How a winner is determined is a secret. Traits will be related to the patron they were won from.

Wade takes a book off the shelf and hurls it at the man in the cowboy hat. While the man may have committed no legal violations that would merit throwing the book at him, it is effective none the less. The heavy tome strikes the man in the temple, felling him. As he falls to the ground, his form shifts into that of a man wearing a blue suit and a ski mask. The man is clearly dead. However, the body soon fades into nothingness, and nearby you hear a loud static noise, followed by mocking laughter. the Australian and the Military man are visibly disturbed by these events.
Mr Stranger begins to craft a gun out of books, and offers to trade his "awesome" gun, for the Australian's "crappy" one. He replies. "Look mate, my gun is my lively hood. That may be a mighty fine gun you are crafting, but until it's complete, and until it has a high powered scope, I'll hold onto what I have. Still, let me know when you put on the finishing touches, and maybe we'll work something out."
Pax takes a seat next to the Military Man at the bar. He attempts to strike up a conversation, but before he can, the Military Man cuts him off. "THERE'S A SPY IN OUR MIDST, AND YOU WANT TO CHITCHAT?!!! NOT ON YOUR LIFE MAGGOT!"
Sky approaches the Australian and asks if he would care for a wager. He replies, "I suppose I could be convinced to play a game of darts. Something to take me mind off the recent troubles."
Jawa walks up to the woman in the orange jumpsuit and asks what her game of choice is. She doesn't reply, but holds up two quarters and points to an arcade game in the corner. Seems she wants to challenge you to Street Fighter 2.
Wade and Mr Stranger get XP. (Stranger succeeded, but I didn't want him having a gun this early, so I left the door open later.)
Mr Stranger

I'll investigate the mocking laughter. (Brains).

Otherwise, I'll just do the first two parts.

Otherwise, I'll just do the first two parts.
I didn't mean you could just spend an action to generically try to improve your odds. I meant if you had a strategy you wanted to spend an action on, I may take it into account when it comes time to learn the results.

Space Jawa take a quarter from the young woman and inserts it into the machine. As they select their characters, he attempts to strike up a banter. The woman doesn't respond, but concentrates on the game. Seems it pays off, as she beats him soundly. She smiles slightly as she takes his voucher.
Mr Stranger goes to where he thinks he heard the mocking laughter, which turns out to be the men's room. Inside he finds the dead body of a man who looks just like the one Wade threw a book at. There is an obvious knife wound in his back. In the man's belt is a wicked looking wrench. It also looks like his cowboy hat landed in a urinal when he fell.
The Australian is surprised by Sky's additional challenge of blindfolded darts, but is intrigued. He agrees. Tying a bandanna around his eyes, he faces the dart board and throws. Surprisingly, he manages to hit the board. Sky steps up next, his own rag in place around his eyes. He throws at the board and misses by a wide margin. However, a sudden sneeze by the bartender startles the military man, causing him to leap upright. The dart flies across the room and ricochets off the military man's helmet. It's at this very moment upstairs that Wade chooses to throw a bookshelf the the ground in an effort to find a secret passage. Though none is found, the bookshelf's thunderous fall knocks the dart board off the wall. The dart strikes it dead center as it is falling. The Australian cannot believe what he saw, but is a man of his honor. He hands Sky a jar full of a yellow liquid that I'm pretty sure you are better off not tasting.
The Host approaches your group.
"What the blazes is going on here? I think it would be best if you lot would leave the establishment for a time. We can't have you continue to disturb our other patrons."

The BoyBlunder
12/26/2010, 15:00
The group was told to head on out, and hurried to complete their business. Mr Stranger grabbed the wicked wrench, and with some trepidation, took the hat to give to Wade. Jawa checked out the woman in the jumpsuit, and beyond her obvious assets, he observed that her play style had consisted mostly of button mashing. Maybe a strategy could be found to overcome this. Sky opened his newly acquired jar and sniffed the contents. He immediately wished he hadn't. What sort of prize was pee in a jar? As they left, one of the group grabbed Pax's arm, who had been staring off into space for some time.
The building's main entrance was actually a large, golden elevator. This doesn't have any impact on the story, I just forgot to mention it before. As they ascended, the golden gates of the elevator afforded them a view of various other floors of the inventory, cluing them in on two things. One, it was very, very big, and two, it was very, very deep underground. It took some times before the elevator finally surfaced. A chime tolled, the doors opened, and after everyone departed, the elevator vanished back into the ground. Once the group got a look at their new surroundings, they realized how unusual it was that an elevator would appear here.
You find yourselves outside. It is night. To the north is an impassible mountain. To the east is an eight foot tall chain link gate. The lever to raise said gate is on the other side. To the west, directly behind you, is a small building jutting out of the mountain, it's door slightly ajar. To the south is a cast iron fence that meets the gate, and winds around a cemetery. The cemetery is in ruins. There are small fires burning in various places, often near scraps of scorched metal, and large red barrels. Dead bodies litter the cemetery, in varying degrees of completeness. A circular sawblade is embedded in a tree on the far side of the grave yard, while directly in front of the gate is a wrecked mausoleum, it's doors blasted apart.
You may take your actions.

Mr Stranger takes his wrench to the gate, cutting a hole large enough for him to crawl through. He then pulls the lever, but finds that if he lets go, the gate will close again.
Wade grabs Pax and heaves him in the general direction of the fence. Lucky for Pax, the the fence is only about four feet high, so even though the throw didn't have much height, the force of the the throw sends him tumbling over it anyway. It isn't graceful, but it works.
Sky takes a moment to examine the graveyard. He takes note that in addition to surrounding the graveyard, the caste iron fence winds it's way through it as well, dividing it into three parts. He is also spots a crowbar close to the fence that had previously gone unnoticed. He reaches through the fence and grabs it. (Critical Success)
Pax picks himself off the ground and brushes himself off, then hurries over to the bodies to try and loot them. As he gets closer, there is a collective growl, as many of them drag themselves off he ground and begin lurching towards him. They seem to have weird animals on their heads. Two of the bodies head toward Pax, while 3 notice Stranger and head towards him.
Space Jawa cautiously opens the door and peeks his head inside. It's nearly pitch black inside, but a squealing shriek causes him to recoil black creature the size of a catcher's mitt throws itself at his head. It barely misses him, and lands outside, rattling.
Space Jawa, Wade, and Stranger gain XP.

Wade darts under the gate just as Mr Stranger closes it and crawls back through the hole he made. The three monsters shift their attention and start lurching towards Wade.
Jawa starts bouncing in place, kicking his feet high into the air. One can almost hear the music. The black creature squeals again and launches itself, but this time Jawa is ready. A perfectly timed high kick catches the creature and sends it flying over the gate, and into the ruins mausoleum. the shadows hide whatever occurs inside, but you hear a startled shout, followed by a gunshot.
Sky decides that he wants to attack the creatures with his crowbar, but with a fence in the way, the only way for him to do this is by throwing it. He rears back and heaves, sending the crowbar flying through the air. It strikes one of the creatures advancing on Pax, but unfortunately, the throw lacked the power to bring the creature down. It howls in pain and turns towards the assault. It seems it isn't smart enough to climb a fence, and simply tries to continue forward, swiping it's claw-like hands at Sky in frustration.
Pax decides to ignore the impending danger and try to go loot some graves. Unfortunately for him, all the graves are undisturbed, and he was no shovel. Oh, and there is a monster actively attacking him. The monster mauls Pax with it's claws. Maybe he should take the danger more seriously?

Mr Stranger crawls back through the hole, races over to the crowbar and grabs it. He runs back to the hole, dodging zombies as he goes, and dives back through. He is safe at third.
Wade takes off his pee-scented cowboy hat and hurls it at one of the monsters. While thrown with considerable force, Captain America's shield it aint. It strike one of the creatures, knocking the strange animal from it's head. The body falls to the ground, while the animal lands lightly and crawls on top of the fallen hat.. The other two monsters that were advancing on Wade grab him.
Jawa returns to the door and peers inside. He finds the room to be pitch black. He'll have to venture inside if he wants to truly know what the room contains. He does, however, hear strange echos in the dark.
Pax tries to avoid the flailing claws of his assailant, but from his position on the ground, he finds it difficult. He crawls backwards until his back is to a grave stone. As the monster grabs at Pax, he offers slight resistance, then dodges suddenly to the left. with the resistance gone, the monster lurches forward, cracking it's head on the grave stone. It lies still.
Sky hurries through the hole, steps carefully around Wade and the two monsters, and peers his head into the mausoleum. Sky finds himself staring into the business end of a double-barreled shotgun. With surprising reflexes, Sky snatches the gun out of the hands of it's wielder, a wounded priest with is back propped against the wall of the mausoleum.
"My apologizes child, I thought you were yet another monster. From the noise outside, it seems you are not alone. Use the gun in good health, though it has but one round left. I wish I could do more to help you, but it seems I am not long for this world."

Using my wrench and crowbar, I could try to dissect the creature on the hat, use its blood to make an antidote for death, then feed it to the Priest.
I mean, those things can reanimate the dead.

Stranger dives through the hole once more and bashes down upon one of the monster attacking Wade with both his wrench and the crowbar. The creature crumples like old newspaper. (Critical hit. I think I need to change dice.)
Pax enters the mausoleum and attempts to convince the priest to sacrifice his life in order to save theirs. The priest responds "While I would gladly lay down my life for another's, I'm afraid it would be a struggle to even stand."
Jawa calls out a greeting into the dark room. His voice echos back at him, almost mockingly. Other than that, he gets no response.
Sky attempts to get the priest to safety. He succeeds in lifting him from the floor and carrying him outside, but when he places him down to raise the gate, the priest's legs cannot hold and he collapses. Seems Sky has removed the priest from what little safety he had. The monster at the fence's attention is drawn by the commotion, and begin advancing on Sky and the priest.
Wade manages to shake the grasp of the remaining zombie grabbing him, and throws him to one side. He runs towards the cowboy hat, and the creature sitting atop it leaps at him, striking him in the face. If you'll recall, Wade bashed his nose while in the Inventory, and the face full of headcrab he just received makes his vision go white with pain. He falls directly onto the hat, crushing it. He's gotten the hat back, but at what price? The headcrab stalks him nearby, while the zombie he knocked down has regained it's footing and is advancing on him once more.
Stranger and Wade get XP.

Also, I'll be careful not to go anywhere inside the room unless I've looked above that spot first to make sure there's not a barnacle waiting above my head waiting to eat me. (Brain, perhaps? Space Jawa opens the door fully and edges into the dark room. He pays special attention to the ceiling, and strains his ears for signs of attack. Unfortunately, or perhaps very fortunately, the darkness makes it impossible for him to see where he is going, causing him to run straight into a number of barrels. He stumbles, but manages to right himself, though not without knocking one of the barrels over. It tumbles forward, and falls over the precipice of a gaping hole in the floor, a fate Jawa would have shared were it not for the barrel's intervention. As the barrel descends, it bounces against the walls of the shaft, sending loud echos throughout the room. A final, resounding thud signifies the end of it's long drop.
Sky drags a dead body to the lever and attempts to impale it upon the lever, but to no avail. Either the lever tears straight through the flesh, or he finds the lever not strong enough to puncture. Unable to find a middle ground, Sky stands guard over the fallen priest.
Stranger leaps at one of the remaining zombies, and lashes at it's head with his wrench and the crow bar. Unfortunately, he was a bit too enthusiastic, while being a bit too uncoordinated. The paths of the weapons cross mid-swing, causing them to become tangled. Though they strike the monster, the blow lacks strength. The monster grunts in pain and turns to face Stranger.
The headcrab stalks closer to Wade. From his currently position on the ground, Wade has few options, and takes the best one available to him. As the creature nears his feet, Wade lifts his legs high into the air and slams downward with his heels. His strike is dead on, and the creature squeals as it dies.
Pax attempts to tackle the zombie advancing on Wade, but due to his limp, spaghetti-like limbs, he trips and falls on his face first. He gets all muddy, and everyone who sees that isn't direly wounded, locked in combat, or dead, laughs uproariously. The zombie doesn't notice the failed attack, and stands over Wade, rearing up to strike down at him.
Wade and Jawa get XP. Hopefully people will see the game has resumed, and I won't need to send out pm's.

Jawa, still keeping wary for attacks, attempts to open the barrels, but finds them all rusted shut.
Wade thinks to himself, "Hey, it would be a really good idea to headbutt this guy. that would be great." Yes indeed, he thinks about doing it, one might even say he went through all the motions in his mind. The only problem is, headbutting requires quite a bit more than thinking. So despite thinking about it quite hard, Wade does not attack the zombie. The zombie clubs him about the head.
Stranger, seeing Wade being attacked by a member of the undead, rushes forward, and swings downward upon Wade with the crowbar and the wrench. He still hasn't gotten used to duel wielding though. Through some strange happenstance, he misses Wade completely, and strikes the zombie square in the noggin with both his weapons, killing it. Stranger wisely pretends this was his intent all along.
Sky grabs the priest under the arms and tries to drag him to the hole in the gate. He grunts, but finds himself unable to budge him. Sky begins to curse not going to the gym more often.
Pax approaches the priest. "Hey man, you aren't looking so good. You seem like you're dying."
The priest smiles weakly. "Hopelessness on my part. With no aid, surrounded by these creatures, and wounded as I am, I feared my time had come to an end. But with your help, I can return to the church and begin to tend to my wounds."
Pax shakes his head. "No man, you are definitely dying. You should give me anything you have that could help me."
"I can give you only my prayers, and my hopes that you will aid me."
Pax gives the priest a look. "And?"
The priest makes a noise that is somewhere between a groan and a sigh and says, "Fine. Take this. You need it more than I." He than hands Pax a small golden crucifix.
One zombie remains, but because the mod was inexperienced, and had too many opponents to start with, the zombie walks through one of the fires in an attempt to attack Wade. He moans with pain, and then growls as he falls down dead.
Pax gets 1 XP. Stranger does not, because he failed his action to bash Wade, but I needed to move things along. You guys need to decide what you want to do. Will you bring the priest to the church, which is just beyond the graveyard, or will you go down the hole?
