Yeah-buh-wha...?!
Cool!
According to the Facebook page, it's going to be a different dial than the con one.

I'm buying this just for the map.
He will have to be very cool for me to want to spend $80 on one figure and a map. I could get the watchmen set for less.

Maybe Troll and Toad can sell them for real this time!
No complaints from me. I'm not sure if I'll spring for it or not (I passed on the earlier version and the Watchmen set largely for economic reasons) but I'm happier with options than without them.

I'm torn too- It would be a cool colossal to have, and a new map would be AWESOME...but do I really want to spend $80 on a figure that I won't play and a map?
That said, I'm happy to see this come to fruition. The fact that there is a new dial is, IMO, a good sign moving forward.

Pretty dang cool! I hope they are learning that the inclusion of a simple map goes a LONG way towards making any sort of collector's set that much more of a 'must have'.

Wow you DC guys will have to save some of your Xmas for the blue dong.

From the close of the linked press release:
Available everyhwere HeroClix are sold (http://heroclix.com/stores/)April 2011, Dr. Manhattan will retail for $79.99. Be the first to add this exclusive new colossal and map to your collection and battle it out to save humanity!

Wow, $80? Are they expecting to sell these? We still have Watchmen sets lying around, gathering dust. Hell our LGS gave one away as prize support just to get rid of it.
Just curious, how would that $80 break down? If they could whittle it down to $50, I'm sure they would get waaay more sales.
He don't have the hydrogen sign in his head?

Yeah, I'm with others. I don't see this selling more than the Watchmen Collector's Set, which I still don't own because of the similar price point. Moreover, I have yet to spend that much for a colossal figure and a large blue humanoid in black spandex (thankfully!) certainly doesn't inspire me to do so now.
Personally, I think they're trying to milk too much out of Watchmen -- the closure of the original WK killed the synchronicity of the collector set with the movie, along with the "mad dash" to own Watchmen clix. It's time to move on to something more prominent: a new colossal figure from Marvel to tie in with the upcoming X-Men set would have generated more interest at this point.
I wish NECA all the best, but they really need to learn when to not reuse a sculpt to get more money out of it. An $80 Smurf with a pituitary disorder doesn't scream "buy me!" The inclusion of a map is cool, but I'll try to pick one up elsewhere or live without.

I actually like the idea of re-using sculpts and I think this is the way to do it; new dial, cosmetic difference to to distinguish from the original) and bonus material(s) (i.e. the map).
So long as re-use is over-used, I am completely fine with it. :classic:
$80 ????? ouch than again the watchmen set was retailed at 99.99 and you can get it for 59.99 online now. Hummmm My Manhattan comes WINTER 2011 retail 39.99 lol that price of 80 will drop.

It would have helped if they added 5 Knot Tops to this new set!
Would $80 dollars be more justified with the new Colossal Manhattan, a new Mars map, AND 5 or so generic Knot Tops? :)

True enough. I know I'd have been MUCH more likely to get the little Jonah Hex set if it had included a map.
The Jonah Hex characters, a couple of generic rustlers, and a map for maybe double the cost would have been awesome.
Giant Manhattan, map, + scenario sounds kinda cool I guess, but I've been playing this game from the beginning and I've never owned a collossal figure and never felt that my Heroclixing has suffered for it. I will pass. (I'm also kinda poor and could never justify spending even half that much for just a single figure, no matter how big, and a map.)
I'm not especially covetous of the map either. I'd have preferred either a more straight-up martian surface (where the likes of J'onn J'onzz might feel at home) or something that really showcased the intricate glass clock-work structure, as opposed to some random piles of spare parts.

Am I the only one wondering how this Empathy dial will work?
Rotate Dr Manhattan one click of Empathy any time you:
Crit Miss (Ouch. Brutal, man. I'm sorry)
Miss by exactly 1 (Ohh. So close. I'm sorry)
Take pushing damage and still miss (Oooo. Brutal. Sorry about that)
Have a figure KO'd (Yeesh. I thought this would be closer. Sorry)
Probability Control and still miss (Ahhh. Man, that just bites. Sorry)
Forget to roll shape change until after you take the damage (Aw, hell. Seriously, man. I didn't see it either. Sorry)
Successfully deal 21 clicks of empathy damage to Dr Manhattan before being defeated and he will be compelled to return to Earth and help you.
look at the photo, they took old manhattan, they add a photoshop layer, they added brigh deatils,
but they forget to re-add the hydrogen symbol on hin forehead :P
fail.

You'd pay $80.00 just for a map? Yikes!!! :o:o:o ;)

That map needs more balls.
I will pick this up since Galactus, Anti-monitor and my sentinels need company. He needs to come with a few other figs though.

im not really against reused sculpts as long as the ones being used are worthy (ie: the sculpt rocks). otherwise, sculpt a new one please. besides, it can't really cost all that much to make the actual dial, so when i'm expected to pay $14/booster, i want to know that it's worth the cost. reusing sculpts helps NECA's bottom line, but does little to help us.
not sure i buy into the whole idea of boosters costing all that much just because of new sculpts. if they were to continuously use old sculpts then i'd expect the price of a booster to drop down to Infinity/Hypertime prices ($7 ish).
in other words, if you want to charge more for your product, rehashing old stuff isn't gonna help.
i'm sure they are in the black sales wise and are making $$$$ hand over fist, so to pay someone to sculpt some kick arse characters can't dip too much into profits.

What good is an $80 Doctor Manhattan if you still end up having to mod a blue dong on him? I guess we'll have to paint Nimrod blue.

Was not motivated to get the earlier version of him as well most places do not allow the big guys to get played as is. While I could afford the 80 dollars that is a waste of 80 dollars IMO even though they now have a new "Map" that goes with him.
Now you tell me that he's got a point total of 150, 300, 500 for each dials I might bite then.

I'm happy.
$80 for a map and a figure seems like a dicey proposition.
$80 for a playable statue of Dr. Manhattan that comes with a map? Word! Yes please!
Its all about perspective, people! ;)

I really like the Mars map
How about $80 sets of the Black Lantern figures from Brave and the Bold? I don't think you would even have to include a map.

I'm torn about the new dial. I really expected the old version to go retail. I get that it's a, "convention exclusive," but I don't like that we non-attenders can't get one.

so basically, the warehouse is full of this unwanted figure because they didn't sell as many as they thought they would so they are going to spray some glossy finish on it, slap on a new dial, and try to push it out again for $80.

What's the Over/Under on how much loose Mars maps will sell for without the Dr. M?
30 dollars???
brevard321
12/22/2010, 02:00
Oh, I'd take the Under as well, but I can see a fairly high price for single maps.
In all reality, this should turn out to be the Heroclix map with the most limited availability.
I would really like a Mars map, but I really don't need the colossal Dr. M. :(
I was lucky and had the funds to aquire the Con-edition of Dr. M and really enjoy him. He's a great figure in many regards. But I'll have to see how much different the dials are to think about getting the retail version. Who knows, I could try talking the store owner into getting one for the shop so we have him for his scenario.

Argh! My completist disease dictates that I own two versions of a colossal I'll never use.
So is this new dial going to make the "old" one totally obsolete ?
If so I'm pissed off.
If not I hope both options will be / stay interesting.

I don't see how the "new" Manhattan will make the "old" Manhattan any more obsolete than the CoG Galactus made the original Galactus obsolete.
If anything, it seems that both Manhattans will retain a unique play experience due to the fact that they have different dials and mechanics.
Does that allay your concerns?
