So ...I noticed whilst voyaging through Ebay that there are custom figures out there of characters already made...which is well and good. But its a custom figure...with the exact same stats as the original.

like....Its A custom Nekron that has the same dial and powers ...but its a custom....

Any thoughts on this?

I'd imagine it is a homemade dial (sticker), which probably won't go over too well at your venue.

Nonsense, who doesn't enjoy a good belly laugh?

I like the idea, as long as it's for home play and not tournaments.

Oh I suppose like most customs as you say: For Home use no real tournaments.

I suppose it gives new meanings to print and play.

Custom Heroclix is one of my saved EBay searches.

Personally custom dials would be the last thing I'd pay for.
I don't want a discussion about wether or not I can use a home brewed set of stats. That'll almost always default to "No". I don't want to recieve that answer, & I don't want to give it.
Or it'll lead to some absurd arms race - and that I really DON'T want to play.

But an awesome sculpt of a character stuck on an existing dial (preferably of the same character)? That's different.
That's just a sculpt swap/mod.
Sure, sometimes/some places, I won't be able to use my PhoenixForce Sentry (on his SI dial), or my very cool Hydra Bob sculpt (mounted on a random Hydra trooper base), or my "Apology Dum-Dum" sculpt (on his SI human dial). But when I can? They'll play just like their ugly ### original sculpts would've.
The difference? They won't hurt our eyes.

Bottom line? If WK produces a crap sculpt & someone else then goes and makes one I like better?
I'll spend the $ for the better sculpt.

So there's nothing wrong with making...essentially any figure like a Chase Figure a print and PLay Figure with you printing a copy of the dial?

As a Judge, my standard rule regarding Customs is that the player must be capable of producing the original figure upon request. For example, ccs would be welcome to use his PhoenixForce Sentry but if his opponent requested, he must be able to place the original Sentry on the board in its place.

In the case of the OP, I'd probably have the same rule... plus I'd be sure to compare the two click-by-click beforehand to make certain there were no differences.

I've been trying to find a damaged/cheap Chase Spider-Woman for a while now in order to swap out the sculpt, but I won't do that unless I could also produce the original.

If you want the official word on this, here you go

Cut and pasted from the HeroClix Comprehensive Tournament Rules PDF

1.2.12 Custom Sculpts: Venues may restrict or allow the use of custom sculpts for their events. A
WizKids sponsored event will permit custom sculpts to be used with the following
provisions:
1.2.12.1 The dial and figure base must be unchanged from its original form.
1.2.12.2 The sculpt cannot be considered to be a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the
capabilities of the played figure. The head judge is the final arbitrator of this
decision.
1.2.12.3 The player must have the figure available with the authorized sculpt.
1.2.12.4 Each round, the opponent must be given the opportunity to deny the use of the
custom, in which case, the player must accede.

In other words, pretty much what RavenProject already stated.

So if its a copy EXACT Of a Chase you'd be ok with people playing it? Even if none of it is original?

Bah I just don't like the Modder I guess...

If it's an exact copy how would you know it wasn't real? Honestly if the sculpt and dial are the same and the dial is simply missing a code or something, very few people are likely to even notice. I'm not saying it's legal or illegal but it's one of those things where if it's a close enough copy and the person playing it is the only one who knows and doesn't volunteer that information then chances are no one else is going to catch on.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question. The sculpt can be whatever so long as the DIAL isn't altered.

1.2.12.1 The dial and figure base must be unchanged from its original form.

So they could have a Nekron dial with a Rainbow Brite sitting on top of it and it's legal, subject to all of the other caveats listed in my previous post.

SO if I have a copy machine and the appropriate stickers I can Print off any dial I want as long as its a pre-existing dial? And sell them?

Think you two are getting crossed wires.

An example Iceman423 knows well: A few years back, there was a guy on eBay selling counterfeit Nightcrawler figures. If you didn't know what to look for, you wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.

As a Judge, if I don't realize the player has a counterfeit figure it wouldn't matter if I was okay with it.

If I knew the figure was a fake and they were unable to produce an original, then I wouldn't allow it. That's a proxy figure, doesn't count.

Selling is a separate matter entirely.

OH so they're still technically counterfit dials.

No, I'm thinking you misunderstood me. Any figure I'm using will have it's original WK produced dial top & sticker.
Wether or not the sculpt sitting on top of it came from WK is another thing altogether....

And I keep an un-modded original of anything I have an alt. sculpt for. Just in case I run into a situation where the mod isn't accepted.
If I'm carrying the mod? I've got an original with me as well.

Hey, as long as the dial top & the sticker are WK produced & unaltered?
And you can place a complete original on the table?
Then I don't care if you make the sculpt out of pink play-doh, use the factory original, swap sculpts, sculpt a more awesome one yourself, or even 100% re-manufacture the original (the tech is out there to do that) in exact detail.
