Feral2k has a turn at penning up an insider's look at the Teen Titans in this latest go of COMIC ACCURATE: DC EDITION!

Greetings fellow Clix-ites, and welcome to a Comic Accurate article featuring one of my favorite teams in all of comic-dom, the Teen Titans! The Titans have had a long and turbulent history, which was cut off for a while when a rogue Superman Robot killed members Lilith and Donna Troy. The team was reformed around the same time as, in the real world, the Teen Titans cartoon debuted, with all members of the animated series appearing in the comic. The new team was made up of the sidekicks that once made up Young Justice, who had also witnessed the death of the old Titans members, with Cyborg, Starfire and Beast Boy acting as mentors to the younger heroes. Immediately after being formed the team was attacked by Deathstroke; the events surrounding this incident led to Impulse becoming Kid Flash, Wonder Girl acquiring a magic lasso of her own from her half-brother Ares, and the team discovering the resurrection of Raven, who became a member of the team shortly after Deathstroke was dealt with. Since then the roster has changed many times, with a lot of the newer members being permanently removed in some manner. I’m doing the original roster, which is one of the few rosters where all of the members are represented in Heroclix. More importantly, it’s one of the few rosters for which I own all the figures. Also, Johns’ book was the first comic I had read in quite a long time. I’d given up on comics after Milestone went under overnight in the mid 90s, and only picked up the first Teen Titans comic because I thought the cover looked cool. This team is the reason I got back into comics, and consequently into Heroclix. I owe the team, book, and writer a lot, and just felt that they needed to be done. Sorry if it sounds sappy, but it’s true. Anyway, I’ve rambled on enough. Time for the team.

To start off the team, here’s the former Impulse and one-time Flash, Bart Allen.

#009 E Bart Allen
Team: Teen Titans
Range: 0 :bolt:

He ignores opposing characters and hindering terrain for movement purposes. He can then make one close combat attack as a free action, and then move him up to the remainder of his speed value. This power can't be countered.

Bart seems like your typical speedster at first glance, but he has a more powerful version of Hypersonic Speed, in that it allows you to ignore hindering terrain as well as characters. This means you can park him in hindering terrain to gain the hindering terrain bonus and still move your full speed when you attack. More importantly, you can move through hindering terrain without losing your attack or the rest of your movement, meaning that foes can’t use Smoke Cloud to slow Bart down. As an added kick in the teeth, your opponent can’t counter this power, meaning you don’t have to worry about losing it to Outwit. His damage is a little low, but you have other characters to deal the big damage.

Next, a hero who always seemed a little under-appreciated (in my opinion, anyway), the amazing Beast Boy!

After the action resolves, replace him with any character with this trait but a different collector’s number on the same click number. Existing action tokens and action tokens for the action are applied to the replacement. Special – Tiny Little Arms Beast Boy can’t use the Carry ability.

If you’re playing a Teen Titans, Doom Patrol or Teen team, you want to start Beast Boy in his human form, since that’s the only one that has those keywords; the others only have Animal. Once you’re underway, you can pick and choose what you want him to do. Need to deal with a swarm? T-Rex is your man. Opponent not packing range or damage reducers? Cheetah is the way to go. Need a tertiary attacker? Go with the bear. The human form is useful as a tarpit sometimes, though his short lifespan makes him less than ideal if you have other options. Don’t forget that the human version also has the Outsiders team ability, which can really mess with an opponent if you use it right.

Next on our list, the tin man with a heart, several other organs and a big honkin’ sonic cannon, Cyborg!

#054 V Cyborg
Team: Teen Titans
Range: 6 :bolt:
Points: 65

Cyborg lives a long time for his point cost, even by today’s standards. He is also a very effective combat piece for his first few clicks. After then, he falls victim to the failings of all older figures, in that his values drop like bricks. Unless you really desperately need to fill the extra points, the Unique is kind of a joke compared to this version. If nothing else, you can use him as a healing battery once he stops being useful for anything else. Partner him with a slightly hurting Raven for infinite healing!

Speaking of Raven, let’s get to her now.

#030 V Raven
Team: Teen Titans
Range: 8 :bolt:
Points: 73
Keywords: Mystical, Sentinels of Magic, Teen Titans
m-normala-normald-normalg-normal10916210816288151881517814177141KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO

I find Raven to be one of the most effective pieces the Titans have in their arsenal. While she probably isn’t going to be doing much damage during the game, her Phasing lets her get wherever she needs to be. Probability Control means that you don’t have to rely entirely on the theme team bonus if rolls aren’t going your way, while Incapacitate and Barrier let her slow down opponent’s teams through token manipulation or terrain modification, respectively. Once she takes a few points of damage she gains Support, though her attack is a little low at this point; I call this “Nurse Syndrome”. If worst comes to worst she has Regeneration at the end of her dial, letting her get back to a more effective click. She won’t do you much on offense, but a finer support piece is hard to be found.

Next on our list Tim Drake, also known as the third Robin, appears below.

#013 V Robin
Team: Batman Ally
Range: 6 :bolt::bolt:
Points: 79
Keywords: Detective, Gotham City, Martial Artist, Teen, Teen Titans, Young Justice
m-normala-normald-normalg-normal81017281017279172791627916178151KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO

The most experienced of the sidekicks chosen to join the Titans family, Robin brings Outwit to the table. The ability to counter other powers, especially damage reducers to help the low damage output of most Teen Titans, is extremely valuable. Robin later gains Perplex to further aid his teammates. Leap/Climb means he can easily position himself, while Smoke Cloud and the Batman team ability (that’s right, no Teen Titans healing for him!) makes him able to block line of fire to his other teammates if need be. Smoke Cloud also slows down Hypersonic Speed, which can be really helpful when facing, for example, Central City teams. His Incapacitate lets him make up for his low damage value when he lands on it.

A one woman wave of destruction that’s easy on the eyes, let’s meet Starfire.

#024 V Starfire
Team: Teen Titans
Range: 10 :bolt::bolt:
Points: 96
AE Base: Blackfire (Yellow)
Keywords: Outsiders, Teen Titans
m-winga-normald-normalg-normal121016410916410915498153981438714287132KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO

Starfire is your main ranged attack piece. 10 range is still not all that common, meaning that Starfire can outrange most of your opponent’s figures. Her consistent damage value stays high for a good chunk of her dial, meaning that she can really lay down a hurting when she wants to. Considering when she was released she has a very good starting attack, though that drops pretty fast. With her low defense, she should stay out of the main combat, sniping opponent’s figures when the opportunity presents itself. She is also easy to heal with Raven should both of them be damaged, so don’t forget that.

Next is probably the most overrated character, story-wise, on the team, Superboy.

#026 V Superboy
Team: Superman/Teen Titans
Range: 6 :bolt:
Points: 153
Keywords: Legion of Super Heroes, Teen Titans, Young Justice
m-winga-normald-normalg-normal10101849101738917389172910163109162108163108152KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOAttack - Conflicted Parentage: At the beginning of your turn, if you haven't already chosen this game, choose Truth or Lies. If you chose Truth, Superboy can use Willpower. If you chose Lies, Superboy can use Exploit Weakness.

I’m sorry, but I feel that Superboy hijacked far too much time when he started feeling bad about being related to Lex, and the whole Superboy Prime thing just made it worse. Clix-wise he’s actually pretty impressive. He has the highest natural defense on the team, and backs it up with a decent attack and hefty damage potential, as well as being able to ignore hindering terrain when you decide to shoot with him, possibly as a way to expose a Stealth figure to Starfire’s attacks should you knock him off of Stealth. Having Force Blast pop up every other click or so kind of makes him a little unpredictable, and God knows you don’t want to critical miss off of his late-dial Hypersonic Speed onto Force Blast next to one of your opponent’s heavy hitters. When you get to his Conflicted Parentage power, it’s not that hard to choose. I almost always go with Willpower, preferring not to lose Close Combat Expert when he has it. Plus, you can’t use Exploit Weakness with Hypersonic Speed, which really makes me not want to pick Lies when the choice comes up unless I really need the penetrating damage. All in all, the most impressive figure on the team. Keep him alive as much as possible.

Last on our list is the lovely Wonder Girl, daughter of Zeus and sidekick of the equally lovely Wonder Woman.

#062 E Wonder Girl
Team: Teen Titans
Range: 6 :bolt:
Points: 87
Keywords: Teen, Teen Titans
m-winga-normald-normalg-normal89173891628816268153781437714277141KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO

Wonder Girl makes a fine secondary attacker. She has enough damage to crack even the hardest damage reducers, and is pretty survivable. She degrades slower than other old-school figures Starfire, Raven and Cyborg, though she’s still not quite up to the level of Superboy. With Close Combat Expert she never does less than 3 damage in melee, which makes her quite the catch for her points. If I had more points I’d make her the LE or Vet, but that leaves a humongous gap in points that feats just don’t quite make up. Still, not a bad figure.

All together, using only one Beast Boy to start the game, the team comes out to 697 points. When you play them, use Superboy and Wonder Girl as your primary melee attackers, with Beast Boy possibly acting as a third if you want to use the bear or eat swarms as the T-Rex. Bart Allen acts as a harasser, a role that Beast Boy can help with if you turn him into the cheetah. Robin wants to find a nice patch of hindering terrain to hide in, using Outwit to weaken your opponent. Raven wants to be on elevated terrain if you can find it close enough to the action; the more figures she can see, the more targets for beneficial rerolls. Starfire stays out of the melee at all costs, blasting opponents before they can be a threat. Cyborg can also fill the role of tertiary attacker, though you might want to get in at least one ranged attack, possibly a Pulse Wave if you can justify it, before throwing him into the thick of combat. Don’t forget your team ability, as it might be the difference between losing a character and keeping the good fight going. Also remember that Robin and most of the Beast Boys can’t use the Teen Titans team ability, so if they need healing they need Raven to be damaged.

Well, thanks for having me. Hopefully you’ll try this team. It does work very well, as long as you emphasize the teamwork aspect of the team. Remember, the Titans are family, and work best when played like one. Have fun, and good luck!

I may have to try out the Modern Age parts of that lineup in the upcoming tournament.
Connor, Bart and Gar add up to 297 points, meaning you can pick whatever version of Tim that suits your needs best - either the Crisis common or the AA Rare. I'm leaning towards the AA one, to make room for more feats. Fortitude on Connor in particular could be very useful.

I play Teen Titans all the time, and I have to say that playing Lunge on the Vet Wonder Girl really makes her much more potent.

I have not gotten to play BB, KF, or SB yet, but I really want to try them out soon.

I hope we get some updated NTT in the next set, especially Raven and Cyborg, who, while not bad dials, do not represent the characters' power levels like other modern age figures.

A new Raven and Cyborg would be great to round out a Modern Era team. And I definitely need a new Starfire to go with the custom I got from PhoenixForce. The old dial just doesn't do her figure justice.

If you really want to include V Wonder Girl, it just takes a couple small swaps.

1) Switch Crisis Robin for Arkham Robin. The Perplex will do wonders for your force anyway.

2) Switch V Raven for R Raven. You'll be able to push to Support right away if necessary, and you really won't miss that attack value compared to what Wonder Girl gains.

This brings you to 694 points, leaving room for Not So Special on Wonder Girl and Starfire. :)

My favorite line-up for the Titans is the adult versions of the original members:

CR029 Nightwing 79
CR038 Wonder Girl 94
CR018 Red Arrow 73
CR047 Tempest 116
+Submerged 5
JL027 Flash 114
+Maneuver 8
+Armor Piercing 10
=499 points

The basic idea is 1) Push Nightwing for the perplex and hang him back in stealth 2) use Tempest's perplex on your attackers while keeping him submerged in safety 3) keep Donna on her enhancement to help out Roy and not commit her to close combat until you absolutely have to, and 4) use Wally to bust stealth for Roy and generally make a nuisance of himself. His high DV, high SV and unending HSS should help with that.

The other one I want to try is the Wolfman Judas Contract-era team:
CR029 Nightwing 79
CR038 Wonder Girl 94
AN014 Beast Boy 60
IO024 V Starfire 96
UN065 E Raven 65
IO053 Cyborg 80

=474 points, leaving 26 pts for cardboard, or you can add Jericho for an even 600.

Nice article. Teen Titans are one of my favorite DC teams. Only thing missing was some discussion about possible team combinations at various point levels (300, 400, etc). Otherwise, great and rep given!

I also agree that some of these characters (Cyborg, Starfire, Raven) are past due for updates!

Teen Titans may be the best and most varied swarm team in DC Heroclix. Suicide Squad is also great for similar reasons, though not quite as varied.

I have two 400 point teams i use to teach people the game:

Vet io Raven, Vet un Cyborg, Vet io Starfire, Vet io Beast Boy, BA Nightwing

Vet lg Superboy, Vet or Wonder Girl, Vet lg Kid Flash, Vet io Robin

Huge array of powers, nothing too complicated, and very thematic.

I absolutely loathe Johns' Teen Titans, but in terms of team building, that's a solid lineup.

Moreso than the post-Zero Hour Titans lineup I played last week anyways. Man, that was a dismal failure. And that team had Supergirl, Troia and Kyle Rayner.

Love the comic accurate article (as I always do). So many different versions of TT's. As long as there is Robin,Starfire,Raven, BB and Cyborg I'm good to go. Though I've enjoyed running some with a few offshoot characters like Ravager, Blue Beetle, Kid Devil, etc. But again between TT and JLA its tough to narrow it down to a specific team. Guess that's why we all play them.

I fully agree with those swaps, though I'd probably go with LE Cassie Sandsmark, who's a nice middle ground and gets the team to 672, which is enough for an Armor Piercing on Bart, Flashbang/Stunning Blow for Robin and five leftover points for something else on someone.

My problem with Teen Titans is I'd want to run a Modern off the TV show and there is sadly no Cyborg, Raven or Starfire that are modern legal :( Sad Panda

Otherwise I almost ran a Teen Titans the other day for a Golden Age with the new Beast Boy(It's very nasty to outsiders a Guy Gardner, John Stewart, or Kyle Rayner BTW) and instead went with Animal, and had me some fun with Animal Man and LE Grodd AA and two of the Beast Boys(OH the Trex was AWESOME) Animal Man WL made a showing as well. I was quite impressed with this new Beast Boy and expect to run him on a "teen titans" team very soon :)

The remakes of Superboy, Bart, and Beastboy really make the Titans a more dangerous team.

Who would you like to see remade?

Raven needs a special power to allow for Barrier and ESD at the same time. OR an ability to lend ESD to adjacent characters.

Personally, I'd rather see some new Titans made than some remakes. I want Phantasm, Pantha, Redstar, Baby Wildebeest, Mirage, Static, Bombshell, any Aquagirl and the rest of Atom's team. Moreso than another Raven when there are a couple that already make for a nice support piece.

Not that he's a Teen Titan, but he did blow out Bart Allen's knee which was devastating. I would like to see Slade Wilson be remade. I know we have one as recent as Crisis, but I think like Deadpool in Marvel, Deathstroke is in desperate need of a remake. I like the Crisis version, but with no SPs or Traits to speak of, he's lacking to keep pace with the new dials. The man single-handedly took down the JLA in Identity Crisis until Oliver Queen takes out his only good eye. That too was awesome. Anyway, now I'm rambling ... ;)

He has a special power. Pretty decent too.

The vet has a better starting attack than the unique, he's cheaper for what he does and has a teensy bit of a longer dial. The only thing the unique has going for it is that end of dial Perplex.

The only reason why either Cyborg's Pulse Wave isn't as effective is because there's no way to get him into position for said Pulse Wave. He's got no Running Shot, and there's only one TK figure in the Titans and he's terrible.

Not to be a nitpicker, but Green Arrow put the arrow in his empty eye socket. It pissed him off greatly, which is why they were able to beat him, but he still has his good eye.

As for the team swaps, I didn't really think about using the R Raven. I picked the Crisis Robin because Outwit seemed like a good call. That's what I was thinking when I built the team.

I played that team recently and it did quite well. Beast Boy gives some nice versatility, Bart is a good harasser that Kid Zoom, Outwit and/or hindering terrain can't stop, and Superboy is a beast. Also, with 2 potential HSS pieces plus Supes Ally TA, this team should have no problems dealing with stealth.

Must stronger and more playable than the current version you posted.

It's also a totally different character. Just the same name.

How'd it do?

A new Raven and Cyborg would be great to round out a Modern Era team. And I definitely need a new Starfire to go with the custom I got from PhoenixForce. The old dial just doesn't do her figure justice.

"Huh huh huh. You said 'Starfire' and 'her figure.' Huh huh huh".

2 and 1. I lost to a team of E2 Superman/SR Alan Scott/Sandman/Wildcat/Mr. Terrific/Dr. Midnight but was able to beat a Kyle/Hal/John/WW team and a Thor/Baulder/Sif/Enchantress/Valkrie team.

I think Starfire having a 12 speed and 10 range was a bit of a surprise to some players. Robin, Cyborg, Beast Boy and Kid Flash effectively blocked line of fire and tied up the opposition so that Superboy, Wonder Girl and Starfire could charge/rs in for high damage while Raven stayed in the back for PC/support.

EDIT: By the way, if you can get your judge to house rule in Impulse as a Teen Titan (because he was a Teen Titan), you can sub him in for Bart (who underachieved for his point cost in all three games) and throw E Speedy from CD onto the team.

I would not advise switching Crisis Robin for Arkham Robin, though. Perplex is great but this team already has several figures with 4 damage and pc so adding 1 to damage or attack isn't a priority. The defenses are generally low and several of the figures lose effectiveness after taking a few clicks so outwit to keep move and attackers pinned down or to help you deal an extra click of damage to impervious/invuln figures is far more useful than frontloaded perplex. Plus, Crisis Tim can just push to give you perplex if you really need it.

AA Robin really seems to be for Gotham teams, as that keyword has enough outwit as it is. Crisis Robin is, in my mind, designed for titans and his teen keyword.

I'd agree with that.

Like the article.

While I do like the Teen Titans, I prefered them back when the book was Young Justice. Young Justice was just good comic fun. I'm looking to complete a theme team of YJ.

Presently Crisis #13 Robin, DC 75 Superboy and Impulse all add up to under 300 pts. Just missing a 100 ish point Cassie in the modern age. I doubt we will ever get Arrowette, Secret and Slobo.

Oh interesting note, Origins Vet Wondergirl added brings the Young Justice team to 397, but it costs you the theme bonuses.
