Just like the title says. When did you begin playing heroclix?

I am interested because I see a lot of new names and faces on here and I am wondering if this game is still picking up steam and how many from the early days are still around.

And no I didn't include the Action Packs or Starters or whatever it is just sets, so if you didn't buy a set first just go with the set that came out closest to whatever you first purchased.

I started around the time Armor Wars came out.

I went to a New Guy Night event (do they even have those any more?), "accidentally" won the tournament (all the guys were helping me out), went home with an LE Kurt Wagner and LE Jessica Drew and woke up the next morning looking to add to my minis collection!

The rest is history!

I found a Hypertime starter set in a Toys'R'Us, and being a huge comic fan, I bought it. I forced my brother to learn to play the game with me. Then I went to the website and found out that there actually tournaments for this crazy new game that my brother and loved. The first tournament we went to was the Xplosion Marquee.

About a month after the first set. I remember buying two boosters at a Gamedaze at the Mall. I pulled a Hercules and Jean Grey.

I remember being annoyed that Iron Man didn't show up until the third set.

Used to get a case per set until the big collapse in 2009. Never when back to the same level. Now I get 2 or 3 boosters and buy a few off the web. Haven't played the game in at least three years, though.

Played Mageknight religiously. But love my comics. So when they announced Heroclix i was beyond happy. Went out got a starter and many boosters. But couldn't get the people that i played Mageknight with to realy give it a go. So i stopped until Supernova when i convinced a few friends we should try it out. Had no venue to play in so i convinced the local comic shop to let us start having tourneys finally with the Crisis set. Been playing ever since. Even through the off time. Slowly been building the local venue. Up to 6 players on a regular basis. And a few off and on people. Absolutely love the game.

I think I was looking for a Iceman Marvel Legends figure on ebay and then I saw the M&M Iceman so I bought that for a couple of dollars. Then bought AV R War Machine. I was just figuring to get 5-10 of my favorite characters. Then I did some research and saw it was this whole game, but the figures were kind of small. So I went out to the comic book shop and bought a booster of Crisis that had some people I had never heard of in it. I think it was Ace, Shimmer, Rip Hunter, Accomplished Perfect Physician, and Wonder girl. I was very confused as Ace was the only one I knew something about since DC isn't really my thing. This was right before Secret Invasion, which I bought a brick of and enjoyed.

I started just before Cosmic Justice came out. I remember this well because it was the news that the three Legion founders were in the set that broke down my resistance to the game. My brother and I bought a Hypertime starter shortly thereafter and had to wait a few weeks to get our hands on Legiony goodness. So, I picked CT/XP as my start, because that had to be what was current at the time.

We didn't get into the tournament scene until after Indy was out, though.

I should note that my brother's resistance to the game broke down with the "news" that TMNT would be heavily featured in Indy. Our local comic book store where we got that information from barely survived the discovery that it was a DIRTY ROTTEN LIE!

My brother started playing a while before I ever did, but I don't remember which set he started playing with. However, I started playing right after Supernova came out and went halfsies with my bro on Origins (what a great set for JSA!). Anyway, the only set I have not bought a case of was Web of Spiderman, and I got all the figs I wanted out of that set for around $50, so I got a good deal there. I started playing about two weeks after Infinity Challenge released.

I picked my friend up from his job at GameStop and he had just purchased a starter from there. I asked him what it was, and he explained the concept. I immediately turned the car around and drove back, and bought a starter and some boosters for myself LOL. Pulled a Vet Sabretooth, Vet Jean Grey, Vet Magneto, Unique Wolverine and Vision, some other stuff and most importantly, an Experienced Ultron...MFer. Thus, my name. Gooooooood times, they were.

Some of the milestone points that came to mind:

Those who started with Indy or later never knew the game when fliers could carry fliers and carried pieces could act in the same turn.
Those who came in with Fantastic Forces or later didn’t know the game without Transporters.
Those who came in at Icons or later never had a shot at pulling an LE out of a booster – the original Super Rares.
Those who came in with Mutant Mayhem or later never knew the game without at least the possibility of Feats and Battlefield conditions -- though I have the sense that at some venues the most recent players may not be seeing them anyway. They also never knew the game without giants.
Those who started with Avengers or later haven’t opened a new set with only 4 clix in the booster nor that didn’t have a character card -- well, aside from packing errors. They also didn't know of a time when Uniques were reserved for what they'd now think of as Super Rares.

From the first heroclix made to the last set , every heroclic should have a chance to be played. They keep making the next set more powerful that the last sets don't measure up.Feat cards helped bring back older clicks but double powers and special powers took that away.Heroclixs weren't made so you can make a fast buck and kill the game in a year. Some powers didn't come out til the third set.Does anyone use heroclixs made from the first three sets anymore.Maybe it would be nice to see a game useing heroclixs from each set made 1000pt game.

I began playing HeroClix just before Icons came out. I would say that the game is picking up steam as you suggest but not for the reason you might think. For example, even though I have been playing for a little while I was not aware of HCRealms until just this year.

So maybe HCRealms is picking up steam?

Some of the milestone points that came to mind:

You forgot the introduction of brown powers in Hypertime and the introduction of lime green in Unleashed.

***

From the first heroclix made to the last set , every heroclic should have a chance to be played.

Even CJ unique Lex Luthor? No, some pieces are really bad... : - )

They keep making the next set more powerful that the last sets don't measure up.Feat cards helped bring back older clicks but double powers and special powers took that away.

Posts like this make me sad. I continue to use all of my collection (well, pieces as bad as CJ Lex Luthor have to wait for Worst Team nights, but his suckiness has nothing to do with power creep. He was a terrible piece the day he came out.)

Most of what people label as power creep just looks to me like better dials. The modern pieces are just more satisfying to play. Early dial design, with plunging numbers, was an inferior idea to the relatively stable dials we have now, and if relegating earlier dials to less efficient positions is the price we must pay for a better, more satisfying game, I, for one, will enthusiastically pay it.

Heroclixs weren't made so you can make a fast buck and kill the game in a year. Some powers didn't come out til the third set.Does anyone use heroclixs made from the first three sets anymore.

Yes. Absolutely.

A short while before WoS came out, I got the idea of tracking what pieces I'd actually used. Now, whenever I use a piece in a game, I mark it as having been used in my database. I haven't made any effort to go back and mark pieces I had used before I started keeping track (that would be too error prone). Since that day, I have used 5 pieces from the first three sets, rather successfully, too. Of course, I haven't gotten to play as much lately as I would have liked to (the gaming group took December off and I've been switching venues in January, so I haven't actually played a game of Clix since November... GAH! WITHDRAWAL PAINS!) 5 may not sound like much, but given that I'm pulling from 43 different sets... it's respectable.

I am not at all eager to return to the days of 5 attacks and 9 defense on the last click. I have no desire to return to the game that was composed entirely of "Try to get first strike/flee to the medic" repeated over and over again. The game is BETTER now. It's more fun, it's more diverse, and the game isn't over when you clobber the opponent's medic.

Suttkus
01/17/2011, 00:43
Another fun fact: I've also begun rolling the dice when designing teams! In order to encourage diversity and using figures I might not otherwise think of, I have challenged myself to let the computer randomly pick one figure from my collection each season (defined by prize kits) that I will build a team around. No chickening out if it gives me something as horrible as Rookie Puppet Master! This season's random piece was Experienced MM Puck. What a great excuse for an Alpha Flight team!

MarvelousMarv
01/17/2011, 00:46
I started at Avengers\Justice League, but it was when Crisis came out that I ACTIVELY started hunting down old sets. I happened to get lucky picking in Crisis/M&M, so had LOTS of Super-Rares to trade for older sets. Since then though I have spent WAY TOO MUCH MONEY on these damn little addictive heroes & villians, and wouldn't have it any other way. I even buy older Uniques, old sets, maps and give them to our local judge to use for prize support on the weeks when we don't play games to have NECA or store provided prize support. Our group (Dragon's Keep in Provo, Utah has almost doubled in the last 4 months) so it has been worth every penny.

I LOVE THIS GAME, because it definitely is;
"Like Chess - but with super-powers"

Saw some Infinity Challenge figures but I am more of a DC fan than a Marvel one. Passed.

Went to SDCC that year and got a demo of Hypertime. HOOKED!

Learned how to really play from a corrupt Judge who's son always won.

By the time the Clobberin' Time marquee me and a friend had found information on line and we figured out the real rules and I won that marquee, became the judge and never looked back.

I did leave when JL came out (lost my venue, next closest is over an hour away, and just loathed the set) but came back about 6 months before HoT when I worked out travel to the venue an hour away.

Started playing 2 weeks after Infinity Challenge came out. Got the Promo Spidey from a friend, then bought a Starter and I think 3 boosters. Pulled Nightmare in my Starter. With Clobberin Time I split a case with my brother, and starting with Xplosion I got a case every set thru Origin (remember, cases were 48 boosters back then). Starting at Avengers, been getting anywhere from a case and a half up to 3 cases per set. Started Judging with Armor Wars (Seth Johnson's first set!) and have been ever since.

The title of your thread says collecting/playing.

For me those are essentially two different dates. So I went with the earliest (collecting).

I really started collecting misc. HeroClix figures with Unleashed.
By this time the sculpts had improved enough over earlier sets. Before this I had a few stray figures & was highly dissatisfied with the quality.
Armor Wars, & CD were the next two sets where I purchased larger quantities of figures (mostly as singles).

Playing.
While I played a game here & there before Origin, this is the set where I actually began playing on any regular basis.

Fantastic Forces!
I played a few games, bought some singles from Ultimates to use as scrap bits for other games, but started looking at the dials, got curious, and Fantastic Forces was my first sealed.

The first game I played was a game at 600 points in which no one could use range. Kept thinking that V Ultimates Hawkeye should have been a much better player. The judge kindly said, "Yeah, Hawkeye is a pretty good piece, but kind of hard to play in this scenario." hahaha

... or that every set attracts newer players?

This, I think.

Of course, remember that this isn't 100% reflective of new players. It is a poll that shows the results of "new players who find HCRealms".

There are, I am sure, new players who come in without ever finding HCRealms, or not registering here if they do find it. (They're probably chased off by all the negativity. Or CuriousLurker's avatar.)

I started during that lull between Topps & NECA, after Arkham Asylum was out for a while, so I chose the SI/AA option.

I was buying them from the beginning, but didn't get to go to my first tournament until X-Plosion, and didn't get to start playing on what I'd consider a regular basis until closer to the Icons/Armor Wars era.

Wow. Thats a pretty clear response for those interested in market research.

Mass initial appeal to a very loyal (addicted?) crowd with a steady, almost predictable growth. What does everyone else read into that scale?

Got in it with Cosmic Justice. There were some Infinity starters left over at the local comic shop, so I grabbed one and then started buying boosters of Cosmic Justice because, y'know, of the Penguin on their boxes. :)

You can check the join date for me. Clobberin' Time was in stores.

My brother was into all sorts of games where he lived. I was visiting for Thanksgiving and he showed me some stuff. We tooled around a bit with some Hypertime and Infinity Challenge pieces that he had and I was hooked (especially with the idea that you could use MARVEL AND DC!!!).

Come Christmas time I bought a few boosters when I was visiting again, checked out this site called "HCREALMS.COM" to read more and got myself in too deep.

Been playing non-stop ever since.

I started one month after web of spiderman came out. My first booster was the spot, Ironman, Spiderman (Regular), Scarlet spider, and the chameleon.

Started the same month clobberntime hit the shelves. I kept seeing ads in wizard and saw em on the shelves of babbages. me bein a big comic junkie, i had to get some, just to have. the fateful day i went, i bumped into a buddy of mine i hadnt seen since graduation, he was there to buy for the 1st time too, haha. i picked up the last sentinel, a marvel starter and a couple i/c and c/t boosters. needless to say weve been playn ever since, and have spawned off several other players and counting.

Jimminy christmas, these poll results are bizarre and kind of cool. A ton of people got in at the start, then a nearly even spread after that. Wouldn't have guessed.

I got in roughly when Unleashed came out. I'm not positive of the specifics but it was the first set that released after I started.

This is good to know because I've been in it from the start and recently came back from a world trip where I searched out comic shops to get last few figs from WoS but couldn't find clix anywhere!

One guy said in Oz that they simply don't play it anymore =(.

Maybe Clix could use an ad in Marvel/DC comics to remind folks it's back & better than ever.

My first fig was the colossal Sentinel, closely followed by the Marvel IC starter, I mis-read the rules and Magneto was charging around doing 10 or 9 damage, funny days...

We may not play it much in the wide brown (wet) land but we still collect it.

It is a bit of a "Joe Sent Me" in some areas, but still there.

Started playing just after Hypertime came out. The comic shop owner had some singles for sell and when I saw the Bane figure that was the clincher.

Started running tournments during X-plosion.

Bought singles and played with a friend of mine who had a lot of pieces before Hammer of Thor and BatB, but I bought the Fantastic Four starter set a few months before HoT and was hooked. Started buying boosters for Hammer of Thor, then bought a LOT of BatB boosters, bought my first brick for DC75

Actually, it's difficult to read too much from any poll here due to the problem of self-selection bias. Simply put, people in HCRealms are people who care enough about HeroClix to spend a measure of their time on a forum dedicated to discussing it. Put another way, absolutely nobody taking part in this poll can be considered a typical customer of the game.

This is a common problem with all sorts of retail lines where the people think that the people they'll be polling on their website accurately represent their customer base.

I'd suggest that the people who have been playing since the early sets are the ones most likely to be invested in the game and, thus, most likely to take part here. This also explains the relatively low rating for the most recent sets, the people who started in those sets simply are insufficiently invested to be spending time at HCRealms.

More interesting to me than bumps that are on the chart now are how the results have changed over time. When I first looked at the chart, the first choice had almost 50% of the respondents, and the next two entries were significantly higher than the typical. Furthermore, the bumps at Fantastic Forces, Avengers and Hammer of Thor were barely perceptible, less than 1%. Now, the late bumps have greatly increased while the early set increases have dropped so much that the third set is down to normal! Again, I think this has to do with people who are more invested spending more time here. As more and more time passes, the people who spend less time here, the less invested, show up more and more, evening out the initial trends.

Fascinating.

Been here for a long time.
I was a Mage Knight player pretty much since the beginning. Discovered MKRealms shortly after, and got into the world of online trading. It was SOOO much better than the official site at the time - you'd think it was moderated by the Gestapo.
Then I saw Heroclix being previewed and thought it looked neat, but I was already committed to a minis game.
Then I got into MK Dungeons in a big way, and Wizkids basically abandoned that line, which disappointed me greatly.
I sent away for the mailaway jolly rancher John Stewart way back in Cosmic Justice, and aside from some figures that were given to me, he was pretty much my first heroclix purchase. I started out collecting only JLA figures, thinking I could just limit my collecting that way.
And to think I was so proud of him. LOL.
My first booster buys started with Legacy, and I still have fond memories of the Icons starter. Still play most of those figures regularly too.
Didn't really buy any Marvel until Sinister. By that time Mage Knight 2.0 was in full swing and even though I attempted to keep up with it, it was the banning of all older figures that was the final straw.
It's been Heroclix, Heroclix, and more Heroclix since then.

Started in the Icons/Armor Wars era. I was interested in the game from the beginning but had just gotten out of Magic: The Gathering and didn't want to get back into collectible gaming. I held out for a while, started collecting and then found a local group that plays. Been hooked ever since!

the first pack i ever bought was from critcal mass which i pulled a dormammu. i damn near #### my pants cus all i knew was silver ringed guys were supposed to be hard to get. ive played clix ever since (minus a small brake somewhere after armor wars and before supernova) and still hold my dormammu in high regard even though he's not near as playable as he was back in the day.

Who?
01/18/2011, 00:42
I bought a booster of Infinity Challenge which I pulled Thanos out of. The guy standing next to me also bought a booster but wanted my Thanos which was what he was trying to get so he traded me like 15 pieces for. Thus my clix adventures began!

First of all it is rad that so many of you responded to my first ever poll. Over a 1000 people so far, that is awesome. And as Suttkus said it is very interesting to see both where the numbers are and how they have fluctuated over time.

More importantly I don't know what this insane Australian saying means:

It is a bit of a "Joe Sent Me" in some areas, but still there.

But I am going to find a way to use it out of context at some point this week.

How is your sandwich?
What did you think of the first episode of Big Love?
Should we switch to a zone defense?

All of these will be responded to with "It's a bit of a Joe sent me."

I had bought a few loose pieces when HT came out, Flash for myself and Blade for a friend, I think there were a few others, but those ones stuck out. Then my wife who was working @ gamestop brought me home a couple boosters of CT, first pull was Nightcrawler and she has regretted her decision ever since. I went on buying occasional boosters up through FF, but mainly marvel. I bought my first Brick, kinda, at a gaming convention, this was piecemeal over the weekend but I bought around 15 boosters of CD alone that weekend (prob about 10 Armor wars, if only I'd known more about chases, I'd have been all over Supernova). Started actually playing with COG which was also my first case worth of figs.

Started buying around Cosmic Justice and played a few fun games with my bro. Didn't really start playing a lot until I joined tournaments the first one was the sealed for Unleashed.

When we started I got us the big Hypertime starter and a rookie Robin and rookie Harley Quinn. After randomly splitting the start I ended up with a second rookie Robin and Harley Quinn. Kind of annoying but having multiple perplexes was great.

Preordered my first case with Fantastic Forces and have bought at least one case of every set since. I wasn't going to buy a case of Supernova since I didn't care about Marvel Cosmic character but then they told me Jubilee would be in the set and I had to have the case.

Local venue closed right before Arkham Asylum but I kept playing through the dead year. Now I am cojudging with my brother at a venue an hour away.

Phillip.

PS: The greatness that is Heroclix got me into playing Mage Knight, Mechwarrior and Horroclix. Wizkids has really gotten too much of my money. :)

I started buying around the time Cosmic Justice came out after seeing a banner ad on dccomics.com. I've been collecting DC sets ever since. At first I only played against my wife and kids. Then a couple guys saw me buying a couple Legacy boosters and invited me to play in the tourney they were starting in 30 minutes. My wife and I went and grabbed a bite to eat (my kids were at their mom's) and returned to play. The guys were really nice and gave me a boxload of their extras. Then I started playing regularly.

I said Hypertime/IC, but it really kinda felt like Xplosion was the set that really got me into the game. First pieces were U Savage Hulk and the U Spidey from that set. Then I took a hiatus after Mutant Mayhem, then got back in with Web of Spidey.

My brother started playing a while before I ever did, but I don't remember which set he started playing with. I've been a plastic crack fiend since then!

Well Bro, I got started just before Collateral Damage. I bought some figs off of my roommate and started playing. Luckily for me he had a little of everything. V AW Quicksilver with Domino and Punisher for starters, then CD came out they were trying to undo some of the damage from Icons by reducing attack values a little. But Luckily for me I got NGN Superman with bat team and He's been my all time favorite fig. I still dust him off whenever there is a golden age match.

I remember why we called it plastic crack because I literally started a tab at the comicbook store just to get one last piece from that set. Every time I went in there, A booster was sitting there and that little voice in the back of my head kept saying, "Maybe there's a vet OMAC in there!" I'm not that bad anymore thank god, but it did have me by the wallet for a while.
