Since Golden Age and Modern Age has been around for a while already here is the question for ALL heroclix players.

What do you play more?

Why do you prefer one over the other or do you like them both equally?

Reason I play mostly modern age is because most of my Golden Age clix are buried under a bunch of messes.

I like modern age. It requires more strategy and creative team building IMO. Plus you dont have to worry about the 5 or 6 cards on your opponents one figure.

I prefer modern age now. Plus with all the special powers on figures at present, it kinda lowers the need for feats. Although I do miss BFCs. At my venue we haven't played anything else aside from Modern age since HoT.

It's pretty hard to build a lot of comic-themed teams with no feats on top of the restricted pool of figures in Modern Age. While I don't mind Modern Age once in a while, count me as a vote for Golden Age.

I usually play Modern Age and definitely prefer it.

My number one reason for passing on Golden Age: the cardboard. What was supposed to be a little addition to help fill out the build total quickly became a system of abuse which still haunts the game today. Even BFCs are annoying although under non-tournament conditions having scenarios is cool. I'm not terribly keen on having CHA cards but they are a necessary evil in order to have SPs specific to each fig.

I went for both. sometimes I don't want E2 getting outwitted or exploited, so feats are nice. Sometimes.

If i do use cards, 98% of the time I will only use Protected, lunge, or Alias. Ill forget my cards if I play more. I have a hard enough time remembering I have Theme probs on a theme team! :(

The only golden age figure I miss is Vet Lockjaw,

Besides for him with the ATA FF, I do not mind playing modern age.

Modern Age is certainly simpler because of the lack of feats and BFC.

In addition, you can see the keywords right on the cards (if you need them).

Unfortunately, Modern Age means you can't use THOUSANDS of older figures.

I wish there was a third age, maybe Bronze Age, in which you could use any figures or bystanders, but no other cardboard or special objects. :)

Some figures need feats to play well but I like both. Variety and all that.

I read in other forums on HC , a few people calling what you are talking about Silver Age...... any figure just no cards. Not sure if it is something real like modern and golden though........

I like Modern Age - no Feats
I like Golden Age - figure availability and BFCs (preferably random BFCs)

Golden Age. I don't like Modern Age, as it automatically rules out the use of a large part of my collection. If I decline to use a figure, I want it to because I don't feel like playing it, not because I'm not allowed to play it.

i prefer modern age... overall much better dials. even in golden age matches a rarely play golden age figures anymore. only thing good about golden age is they have cheaper figures to fill out point totals and the occasional feat.

I like playing featless every now and then (perhaps even a slight preference for it), but retirement, no matter what form it takes, can bite me. (i.e. I voted "Golden Age")

I prefer Modern Age most of the time. Totally agree with the previous statements about feats. They were/are fun until I start seeing 4-5 Protected of 1 team.

Golden Age is the only age for me.

Having played since Clobberin' Time, I don't need the basic rules. I enjoy the added complexity and deeper design of as much choice as I can get and that exists in Golden Age.

The only Modern Age games I run are New Guy Nights.

I like both aspects. I like the restriction of feats in modern but I like the player pool with Golden.

Should have a fourth option: Golden Age (no cardboard). Its what we mostly play at our venue, plus it takes care of the issue most feat-haters dread about the Golden Age.

Modern Age for me. My propensity for 'Fortitude' aside, I'm much happier not to have to contend with 'ICwO' and 'Protected' and 'Warbound' and so on. Entirely worth the trade-off, and puts the focus back on the figures -- where it belongs.

I like the increased character selection of Golden Age (especially for theme teams), but I like the fact that I don't have to worry about feats and BFCs in Modern Age.

Definately modern age. It opens the game up to newer players who don't feel like they have as big of a hole to overcome with already having thousands of fewer figures than experienced players.

Also, after loosing to a guy who put 5 feats on a Man of Steel saying "it makes older figures more playable. He already had the highest point total, attack value and defensive value on the board and now I have to track feats that make him even better? Too much to track and drives newer players like me away.

I actually get pissed off when I see feats come out, mainly because they are always the same 3-4 feats over and over. Just build a team and if you don't like the figues you have select other ones.

01/18/2011, 22:43
I am more into Golden age because it lets mee use more of my figs. With Modern age it just seems like a big waste of money is sitting in my room because they can't be used. Also, as it it right now, most of the teams i want to play are built of mainly old figs(though we are getting more and more re-makes that are helping) I do not mind using Madern age for offical tournaments for big prizes or for new sets but not always. Still though my main gripe is still the fact that with Modern age i am both limited toi what i can play and i it's a waste of figs.

Grumpygoat
01/18/2011, 22:44
I like them both equally. Golden Age allows me to play any ol' figure and any ol' team combination I like, with all kinds of feats and battlefield conditions to help even up the odds.

Modern Age means I can avoid some of the awful teams some people put together, which are either repetitious or outright cheese.

The7ofDiamonds
01/18/2011, 22:56
Equally.

Modern Age because it's kind of nice to not see pit crews anymore, and I like to keep things fresh.

Golden Age because I'm still a really big fan of feat cards.

carnage666
01/18/2011, 23:00
I like them both.

Golden Age lets me use figures for the teams I want to play.

Modern Age at times forces me to at least think about playing figures that I may not think about if it's a Modern Age game.

I like Modern due to no cards, although I do miss my BFCs.

jak7890
01/18/2011, 23:18
I chose both, but the answer's a bit more complicated than that. I don't like retirement, but I do like going featless since it's easier for new players.

The majority of games that I run are something called, "Meta-Modern Age." It follows all of the rules of Modern age except for retirement.

ccs
01/18/2011, 23:33
I'll play either.

But I prefer Golden (or Silver) Age.

Why? Because Modern doesn't allow me play many of my favorite characters & sculpts.
And because I can't use certain characters? That means I can't run many teams in a comic accurate way. I resent this.

Stats, feats, keywords, theme rolls, BFCs, etc? These are all varying degrees of afterthought to me. My primary concern is: character I want to play + point cost/available build total
So as long as I can play him? I can live with Adam Strange (for ex) having a tougher time vrs newer figs.

VikingRS
01/18/2011, 23:55
I choose both. Sometimes feats can get out of hand but most at my venue only run a few.

Also at my venue, we have:

Silver Age: allows any figure regardless of set, but no Feats of Battlefield Conditions.

Bronze Age: allows any game element produced in a set legal for Modern Age.

Where I play most often we play golden--meaning all feats, BFCs, purple rings, etc. are legal. So I have many opportunities to play pieces from older and newer sets.

Looking at my personal collection, I have more golden age pieces. Plus, my favorite characters/pieces are more commonly found in the older sets. When they start to remake those then I will probably shift more toward modern age play.

What golden age character/piece is tops on your list for a remake? Me? Captain Cold. Bring it.

Sharkbite
01/19/2011, 01:30
I prefer "Silver Age": No retirement of figures; no cardboard.

CatManandJade
01/19/2011, 01:51
Where I play we have a few rules that works way better for us. One feat card for every 100 points played, not to exceed 10% of build total. Now feats that make sense can stay in play while not using them as a crutch. ICWO on a gotham theme team, Alpha Flight a group of high point costing Avengers to give them a useful team ability.

I vote that both have their place!

wickedjohn
01/19/2011, 02:21
i like them both but the most of the golden age figures require skill, finnesse, and lots of luck to play, especially against modern age ones. and in my opinion, no figure needs feat cards, only the player playing them does.

HauntWrigs
01/19/2011, 02:57
We use the Popsicle Stick method for Theme Team Rolls...works pretty well.
I find that using some other marker/indicator for theme team PCs helps me A LOT.

01/19/2011, 04:00
Modern age. I can see where people would get upset that their Golden Age pieces can't be used, but after so many years of people stacking feat cards onto already dominant figures, revisions had to happen.

Stats in the Golden Age are too low at this point, same with point values. A 20 point PCer just doesn't seem fair anymore.

No more cardboard or REV, just give me superheroes that play the way they should, all DIFFERENT.

konasavage
01/19/2011, 04:51
I voted modern, but would like access to all figs but no cardboard as maybe a Silver Age option.

Behemoth
01/19/2011, 06:53
Neither. I like a mix of the two that allows all figures and ATAs to be used, but no feats or BFCs.

Nightwing-fan
01/19/2011, 07:56
I went with both. I like to still use alot of my older favorites, even with power creep. A few of them still can hold up against their newer versions or therestill better then the newer ones.

But at the same time. I love the fact that we dont have to worry about having a ton of feats on one chaaracter.

I guess I'm more silver age then golden or medern. I like to use any figure I choose to, but not have to worry about any feats on them.

red king
01/19/2011, 08:55
Our venue plays both, and a mix sometimes. Next tournament is 600 points everything goes.

At home with my kids and friends we play whatever we feel like. Sometimes we bring out the sentinels, and sometimes its all the newest stuff.

I voted Golden Age so I'd have access to older figures. However, silver age (figs but no cards) is the ideal format.

Golden Age.

I own the pieces, cards, etc., I should be able to use them.

Issues of "abuse" do not concern me.

hobojoe258
01/19/2011, 10:21
Golden Age, because I don't see the point of having figures and cards that you can't even use.

Owlman166
01/19/2011, 10:28
I ALWAYS play Golden Age, and I love feat cards. They really aren't abused as much as they used to be, since you now are required to use the %10 feat rule. I generally use Protected, Alias, and sometimes Shellhead or Fortitude. Oh, and Print n' Play was one of the WORST additions to Heroclix, the worst being Con Artists, and Medics. (When do you ever see a medic in a Superhero/Supervillain fight, anyway?) The game is supposed to be COLLECTIBLE. If you want the power of Protected, buy it officially. 'Nuff said...

Spider-Bat
01/19/2011, 10:32
I like Golden Age. It requires more strategy and creative team building, IMO. Plus, you (usually) don't have to worry about the 3 or 4 Special Powers on your opponents one figure.

spider_ham
01/19/2011, 11:07
Ultimately, it's Golden Age for me, as all figures will eventually go the retirement route.

I do like the exclusion of feats in Modern Age games, though. From a logistical standpoint, however, Modern Age is the most expensive to play-- if you don't have at least one or two of the more strategic characters in your collection (usually Rare or Super Rare), certain games can be more difficult.

kuthell
01/19/2011, 11:12
I prefer "Silver Age": No retirement of figures; no cardboard.

This. So used to no BFC's that I forget to build with them. And I don't miss the added complication of feats, though I do bust out Contingency Plan when ever we play golden.

I wish there was a third age, maybe Bronze Age, in which you could use any figures or bystanders, but no other cardboard or special objects. :)

This! I voted Golden Age because so many teams can't be fielded in Modern, but this is what I really want: Golden with no cardboard.

HauntWrigs
01/19/2011, 12:21
There are certain keywords that are not as prevalent in the newer sets as in the older sets. You almost have to use golden age pieces for certain teams. This is not to mention that some keywords have not been remade in any modern set.

And when you build using these older pieces, some of them you have to feat up just to be marginally competitive. So feats should still be allowed (per the 10% rule) for those weaker pieces that you want to use in your theme teams.

Mathew B.
01/19/2011, 14:36
I voted for modern age because there's not five different things to keep track of. I have enough of a hard time just trying to remember all the PC rolls I have in my theme team. To have to keep track of Feats and battlefield conditions give me headache when I am just trying to play a game.

Also most of the theme teams that I know about and want to play in the game are in the modern age sets. As much as I liked the old school Thunderbolts, I like the version we get in HoT a lot better.

I play modern age mostly out of the fact that I really got my start in Hero Clix around Secret Invasion

But I also like having the cards with the character abilities and special powers because it can bring the characters closer to their comic counterparts than just the standard powers. Also the character bios and info are just nice to have for whenever someone is interested about a character.
