We are 4 weeks away from Emerald City Comicon so I thought it was time to reveal our official lineup of Heroclix events.

Friday, March 4th:

The con is open from 2-8 PM for the first day. We are going to have Battle Royale events all day. $15 gets you a single booster and a chance for some prizes in these 4 or 8 person games. Any funds aside from the booster cost goes to Seattle Children's Hospital.

Saturday, March 5th:

Battle Royale events again from 11-4.

300 point Modern Age constructed tournament from 5-Midnight. $10 entry fee for this event goes to Seattle Children's Hospital. Prizes for this event are still being finalized but expect Ben Misenar customer figures, plenty of LE figures and very possibly a White Lanter figure....like The Flash....like I am donating a WL Flash figure. ;)

Sunday, March 6th:

300 point Sealed tournament. $30 gets you entry and two boosters to build your team. Extra funds goes to Seattle Children's. I intend to get at least 1 booster of DC 75th for each player to use. I will update this thread when I get the actual product. Prizes include more Misenar customs and LEs. Maybe a Colossal Dr. Manhattan...as in I plan to donate my Colossal Dr. Manhattan.

I am trying to contact Wizkids for some prize support assistance and I plan on having a few helpers so that I don't hate myself by the end of Sunday.

There is also going to be another raffle drawing this year and you won't have to be present to win the prize. I fully expect that we will raise over $1000 to Seattle Children's Hospital again this year. I hope to see many of you there.

Any chance you can post pics of the Misenar customs BEFORE the event, as incentive to make the trip?

Oh yes, indeed! I plan on updating when prizes get finalized. I know that Ben has a few extras around his house that he can paint up. Here is a link to his site:

http://www.freelancesculptor.com/index.php?p=1_1&p2=1

I would expect at least an Ares and Dum Dum Dugan. He and I discussed putting them on their appropriate Heroclix base as well to make them playable.

Are all of the battle royale games on Friday and Saturday going to involve purchasing boosters or otherwise paying to play?

They are a purchase of a single booster at $15. The boosters won't cost that much, so depending on how cheaply I get those boosters will determine how much goes towards the charity.

After the event, I will post a breakdown on here of how much was donated and the actual booster prices. I hope to get a local venue or two to sell me some cases at a discount.

I will be there for all 3 events, but I don't understand Friday. Are the event rules impromptu? Details to come? Free play? The other 2 days look uber fun!

I have a similar but more all encompassing questions.

Does each time frame for the Battle Royale count as one event are are the multiple Battle Royale matches in that time frame?

If there are multiple BRs in a time frame, do I have to buy entry into each BR session or just the first one and I get to play as much as I want?

da-Craig-O
02/05/2011, 09:57
Battle Royale events begin as soon as 8 players are ready to play. They take between one to two hours. You pay $15 to play which gets you one booster. Each player opens their booster and pulls one figure, then passes to the left, so it is a draft. You play the five figures you end up with and team up with another player. Once two teams have been eliminated, the remaining teams move on against each other. Then, when one of the final four players is eliminated it is every 'man' for themselves until there is a winner.

Prizes are given to the winner and fellowship.

These are good events for more casual play and can be good to take a break from the con to play just a bit of clix. Once I know what product I can get my hands on I'll let you all know what boosters will be available for BRs.

Okay, I like that - I've never played anything like that before!

Will there also be possibilities for open gaming - like if there are people who want to get a game in but can't necessarily do a long Battle Royale?

That page is the personal site for an actual Heroclix sculptor. He made that Red Son Superman for the previous Clix for the Cure events. It is not an official Heroclix figure, just like the Stan Lee figure from last years ECCC event. :)

No.

He is not an official figure and since he is a licensed property, having him as a giveaway for a charity event was the only way he was given. You can try to purchase one from the 3 winners across the country who got him. Mine was sold for $400 (the money went to the charity) and shipped to a gentleman in Canada.

It is whatever 5 figures you get. However, do not assume that points always wins. You are not playing one on one and big beat sticks have a way to get ganged up on.

I once won a BR at Gen Con using Mephisto. Against Cramcompany and Uniquist in fact. :)

I will be there to play Friday and Saturday, and help out Sunday. Plane ticket already purchased, and I should have my hotel accomodations worked out soon. :)

Question - Will the BRs be 4-person, or 8-person (2 4-person matchups, winning 2 players from each meet at the final map) like WK used to do? I think 4-person BRs would be more manageable and quicker. Quicker is good because it can take awhile to wait for 8 people to start a BR. Of course, at $15 a pop, some players might not want the BRs to go quicker...

This would be group/prize support dependant. If I have enough LEs to spread around then 4 player is a great idea.

Roger that. For what it's worth, I stole the idea from Clixathon. Apparently Norm did "pods" of 4 at the BRs for his event. I've only ever played 8-player, but in my experience with WWLA BRs it can be a big time-sink waiting for the other 7 spots to be filled.

I invite you all to some organized open gaming. I'll be running two games on Saturday and then Sunday. Many of us are still affected by tough times, including me, and would love to make charitable contributions, but simply cannot do so at this time. The main reason I go to ECCC is for the Heroclix, but I cannot afford to pay to play this year. If you are in the same boat as me, please join us for a couple of games on Saturday and Sunday in the open gaming area. I encourage those who can to participate in charitable games to do so in favor of these, but if you're strapped like I am, come play some unsupported non-fee games. I've published all the details here: http://themap.multiverse.org/?p=1001 Please join us won't you?

I am getting set to drop a bunch of advanced cash on some boosters for Sealed and the BRs. I intend to have at least 1 booster of DC 75th for the Sealed event.

What preferences would you all have for Battle Royale stuff? Web of Spidey? B&tB? Hammer of Thor? (ouch). Older stuff?

Any of those three would work okay for me, personally. HoT and BatB have the advantage of chase potential, but WoS is newer, so might appeal to more people. I'm assuming DC75th is out of the question, because that would be the best option IMO - better chances at chases, and it's the newest stuff.

See if you can get WK to donate some early-release GSX! :)

Yeah, I like the HoT option -- great generics, I still need an Odin ( ;) ), and the potential for God Packs making all 4 players in the BR happy = win-win!

While we played with HoT last year, that appears to be a fiscally irresponsible option. (the lowest case I can find is over $300!)

That said, I have some preliminary news regarding prizes. A local comic shop, Comic Evolution in Puyallup, has been kind enough to donate their entire collection of OP kits from HoT, Web, B&tB and DC75th. That means we have about a dozen sets of LEs to add to the prize pool as well as maps and an entire set of the white lantern objects.

I still plan on picking up enough DC75 to fill half of the Sealed event. The other booster will almost definitely be Web, unless an all DC Sealed is preferred and we can use B&tB. Battle Royales will be Web/B&tB stuff.

Mr. Misenar has let me know that he is contributing 3 customs to the prize pool. The constructed tournament will have Red Son Superman on a DC75 base as a prize. Sealed gets Ares on the SR Ares base and the raffle drawing gets his custom Destroyer on the HoT Destroyer base.

You can find those here:

Hey Craig, have you contacted any of the mapmakers here (Gridreality and/or The Adventurer's Atlas/Mighty Maps, CuriousLurkings) to see if they'd be willing to donate any maps for your events? It is for charity after all. If they send you maps that you want to use in the tournament instead of giving out as prizes, maybe you could even sell them at their retail value to raise more cash for the cause. I know I'd be willing to buy ones I don't have (CuriousLurker's cool new Atlantis Map, Gridreality's Map Packs 3 and 4) at retail price after the Sunday event (heck it would to save me a little money on shipping :) ).

Just a thought.

@elf - That is a fantastic idea!

I have just confirmed purchase of 2 cases of DC 75th so the Sunday Sealed event can support 40 players with 1 booster each. Here is a general prize breakdown:

Battle Royales - Web of Spidey or Brave & the Bold boosters will be available to use at $15. Prizes for first and fellowship at least. Depending on turnout and if Wizkids gets back to me this may increase. LEs will range from as far back as Critical Mass to the newer stuff.

300 point Constructed - Winner chooses between Red Son Superman or the Dr. Manhattan Colossal. Fellowship gets next pick. There will be other prizes as well for 2nd and 3rd and maybe a few random roll giveaways.

300 point Sealed - $30 will get you a booster of DC 75 & a booster of B&tB (seemed more popular and better keyword synergy). Prize choice for the winner will be the custom Ares or White Lantern Flash. Also prizes for 2nd and 3rd are planned. LEs or boosters, depending on availability.

The raffle will feature the custom Destroyer and several other goodies. LEs, purple ring sets and possibly a brick or two. More details on the raffle as we get closer to the event.

If you get a chance and know that you are attending, please post here with your intentions. What events do you plan on doing? The more I know the more stuff I know to bring and buy. I am not too worried about the cash I am putting up to have boosters there but the more folks we get to join in, the less likely I am to have to ebay off extra stuff after the fact. :)

Speaking of the raffle, I have a new idea for this year. You do not have to be present to win, although it would be nice.

When you buy your ticket, you can fill your name/address/email out and then put your name on your tickets. If you are drawn for a prize and you are not there on Sunday to claim it, I can mail the prize to you.

I am sure that there will be space during the BR events for open gaming if you are so inclined. I have no problem with that at all.

I invite you all to some organized open gaming. I'll be running two games on Saturday and then Sunday.

I've contacted Michael Byers (in charge of gaming at Emerald City Comicon) to ensure I'm not out-of-school on running a couple of large games, and here is what he had to say:

...the question of running free HeroClix games, so long as you understand the space considerations and Craig is OK with it, I have no problem with it.

Apparently the gaming area is smaller this year, but gets its own room. With piles of Magic events going on, there could be little extra space. I told Mike that we would yield table space to whatever games push us out, so the games I am running are tentative. We could be asked to yield the table(s) during the middle of a game, and it is on us to end the game within a reasonable amount of time and give them the table - we'll negotiate a 15 or 30 minute turnover.

You can read about the games I am running here: http://themap.multiverse.org/?p=1001 Also, everyone is invited to join us in Tukwila for 1/2 price appetizers in the restaurant part of Applebee's!

Quick question on the tournament rules:

Last year, players were paired up based on their current standing and then plopped down in front of a randomly selected map. I had no problem with this and I don't think the majority of the rest of the player did either. It added a nice random element to the tournaments. But one player decided to ask for a map change (actually they did it twice), and was allowed to switch it. I know it frustrated a few players, including myself, because we were all under the assumption that map choice wasn't an option.

Will we be randomly dropped onto maps this year (my preference), or will we be able to choose the map if we win the roll?

da-Craig-O
02/23/2011, 17:42
As is typically the case, you can always pull your own map out if you win map choice. I have no problem with that.

The map you are seated at is there for convenience but any 'sanctioned' Wizkids map is allowed so long as it fits on the table.

OK. Best to clarify that you can use any 2'x3' or 3'x3' map from the 'color coded' era. Saves on needing a map errata for the old stuff.

The 3'x3' maps will usable only if the tables can hold them.

Somehow I am making this super confusing. :)

You are allowed any color coded map released by Wizkids. If you have one of the several 3rd party maps, you can bring it but whether you use it or not would be up to your opponent. They can refuse its use, in other words.

Map confusion aside, my garage is currently the temporary home of the following:

2 cases of DC 75th
2 cases of Web
2 cases of B&tB
3 full sets of DC 75th LEs
Approx 9 other full LE sets from HoT, Web and Brave
Collossal Dr. Manhattan
White Lantern Flash
a few dozen LEs from nearly every Heroclix set
About 3 dozen maps from Web, Brave and DC 75th

None of that stuff is coming home with me. This doesn't include the 3 hand painted customs by Mr. Misenar. Or the extra bits coming from our friends at Comic Book Ink.

Needless to say, I am excited!

Sounds good. A few more questions!!

Do we have to sign up for the events or do we just show up at the start time?

Do we get to choose the boosters for the BR (whether we want to play Web or BB)?

Do the BRs start at a given time or do you show up, get your booster, and wait for spots to fill and start asap?

If there is a need to sign up for events, how much time before should we sign up?

Are there limited spots for the events or is there no need to push and shove to get to the sign in sheet?

That should cover my questions for now. Thanks again for putting on these events, I can't wait till Friday!

Sunday's tourney is noon to 5. It will be a five round event, so depending on turnout, there will likely be a winner based on points, as I would expect multiple undefeated players.

The winning team -

WoS Nightcrawler
WoS Bullseye
AA Tthe Question
BatB Diana Prince LE

In the most selfless act I have seen in some time, the winner asked his opponent what he would have picked, chose that prize and handed it to his opponent. Very cool.

Also cool? Getting the Red Son Superman for fellowship! Be good sports and play by the rules and you shall be rewarded

There's a sealed tournament in 45 minutes! You should go to that!

hmm...I suppose I should start getting ready...

A big thanks to Craig for organizing the event. I'd also like to say it was nice working with Billy and Joanie on the sealed tournament.

Sealed was 300 pts, and each player got one booster of DC 75th and one booster of BatB. I saw the following chases pulled:

WL Donna Troy
WL Superboy
WL Flash
BL Kal-L

All chases were used on teams.

We had 28 players and ran 3 rounds of Swiss before cutting it down to the Final Four. Since I was running it, Craig was able to play (and made it to the final four!). At the start of round 2 (or 3, I can't remember), I got to "swag the tournament" with a box of LEs that Craig had, which was fun. At the end of the day the final match was between:

DJ Tobey using
Deadshot
Batman (DC75)
Talia
Jason Blood

and

Andrew Snowdon using
Wonder Woman (DC75 SR)
John Stewart
Robin (BatB)

DJ took it all, and (naturally) chose the custom Ares as his prize. A kid named Zac was my choice for fellowship, and he got the WL Flash that Craig had generously kicked in (he didn't have it in his hands for 5 seconds before loudly asking if anyone needed a WL Flash...guess he's not a White Lantern fan ;)).

DJ swore he'd actually use the Ares in games, but I suspect that it'll find its way into his brother John's collection sooner or later (John is a dedicated Heroclix collector!).

Craig threw in the extra DC75 and BatB bricks from the sealed to the auction. The winner of the BatB brick let Billy pull out a ton of CUR pieces to give to Kenneth, a player from Hong Kong who has relocated to Seattle and is just getting back into the game after years. I thought this was awesome (and if I had the man's name, I'd definitely post it here). Kenneth played in the sealed event, but it was the first time he'd used any figures with SPs...now he's got a ton of new figures to jump back in with!

My brother and I had a great time in Seattle. We played in some fun Battle Royales, he played in the sealed event, and we got to explore downtown Seattle for quite a bit Saturday afternoon and evening. Craig gave me a cool book of art from artist Mike Henry for helping out (very nice) and I actually won one of the smaller raffle prizes, which was cool.

I'm sure Craig will announce the total collected for the Seattle Children's Hospital soon, but it was (IMO) a significant amount, and something for him to be proud of. I'm already looking forward to being there again next year!

I won't put his real name up (don't know if he wants privacy or not), but yeah, rep to Sanschel for his generosity. Kenneth was so surprised and amazed, it was really touching!
There were also other gamers who knew about Kenneth's new guy status, and gave LEs and other figures to start him up again. I don't remember their names (always bad with names), but thank you all!

My brother and I had a great time in Seattle.

What a fantastic weekend that was. After a much needed rest I am happy to be back home with another year of fantastic ECCC memories. A huge thank you to Billy, Joni, Brett and Mark for all of your help. Thank you to LeeMac and TVK for getting on an airplane to come play clix with us. Thank you to Rob and Patty for putting a little bit of Vancouver Heroclix fear back into the ECCC.

I have to recount the large stack of bills but after the cost of the 7 cases of Heroclix we went through as well as a little bit of payback to the good owner of Comic Evolution for all of the prizes and cheap clix he gave us, we should be kicking over $1100 to the Seattle Children's Hospital.

I will post the Constructed teams here later today.

Good question. On the ECCC website, I see this:

In celebration of our 10 year anniversary, ECCC is pleased to announce a MASSIVE addition to our show: Emerald City Gaming! Three days with two full floors of awesome tabletop, RPG and video gaming! Featuring some of your favorite games from Wizards of the Coast, Steve Jackson Games, WizKids, Fantasy Flight Games, Pokémon USA, Paizo Publishing, Mayfair Games and many more!

Do you want to be a part of Emerald City Gaming? 32,000 people came to the show last year and this year promises to be even bigger. We are now accepting exhibitor and artist alley applications from qualified gaming companies, artists, writers and retailers for our brand new gaming area. If you're interested, please contact our Gaming Coordinator, Christian Kelley at gaming@emeraldcitycomicon.com for more information.

Unleash your inner geek with Emerald City Gaming in 2012!

But I don't see any links that actually take you to information on game specifics. It's two months away, so time to start planning if I'm flying up from Cali this year! :)
