Well, I'm watching it right now, and I can certainly say they SOUND dead. This is the worst halftime show I think I've ever seen. They need to go away and die.

Will someone tell whoever is in charge of putting these halftime shows together that acts like this suck. These are football fans. Not a bunch of MTV zombies. Please keep these sissy acts away from football.

Black Lanterns? No.
Rejects from Tron? Yes.

I thought it was a pretty decent half-time show. Slash was there, that alone makes it okay. The one thing I had a problem with was Fergie over-pronouncing words on Sweet Child o' Mine.
And for the National Anthem - Xtina was awful.

When will the NFL realize that teenybopper popstars and hip-hop artists do not belong singing the Star-Spangled Banner or in their half-time show? While I will be the first to admit that the national anthem isn't an easy song to sing, it is at least fairly short, so the lyrics are simple to memorize. One would think that a professional singer would be up to the task, but apparently not.
As for that travesty of a half-time show- I've seen some terrible half-time shows in my day. Until today, that mess with Brittney Spears was the worst (worse even than the Janet/Justin debacle). Words fail to express the extent of absurdity that was on my screen today. I can't imagine anyone over the age of seventeen who found that mess entertaining. At a stretch, I can see some potential amusment in it in a MST3K kinda way, once the initial pain wears off.

So, if you were planning the show, who would you pick to do the half-time show that has more appeal. I mean, in case no one noticed, the show is sponsored by Pepsi and their demographic is younger than 40.

Now that you have asked, I really can't come up with a good answer.
I would have had Christina singing the National Anthem. I thought that was a good choice. She has a great voice, beautiful to look at, and as far as I know, has remained pretty much scandal free. It's a shame she blew it. That was very disappointing.
As for the halftime show, well this is football, so I would have something with a hard edge. I big rock band playing something with strong lyrics.
Maybe Metallica, I don't know. Just something with some weight to it. They should take advantage of that large video monitor, it should have been showing great plays from the season, while the music plays on.
How about going the other direction, and bringing in some new talent noone has heard before. Hearing a new rock band playing cover tunes, or their own new single while we watched good plays on the video screen, synchronized on the monitor might be great. It would be a great way to launch a new talent.
Now that you made me think about it, it's not as easy as i thought it would be. :ermm:

I think the real culprits here were the sound guys....I hate sound guys. There is only one that I have met that knows what he is really doing.
I don't think I have ever liked a half-time show anyway.

For the National Anthem, I'd go with Norah Jones. Since Norah is from Dallas, she would have been perfect.
For the half-time show, I'd pick The Black Keys and the Old 97's (also from Dallas).

Yeah, I give the NFL credit for actually getting a band that is popular now as opposed to 20+ years ago. Seriously, the Stones? Paul McCartney? Tom Petty? Bruce Springsteen???
Not that I have a problem with them in general, but... look, if your halftime musical act can belong to the AARP, you might want to consider getting someone else.
Personally, I felt the last good halftime show was U2 in the Pats-Rams Superbowl. :cheeky:
Who cares about Janet Jackson WE SAW FOUR BOOBS ON STAGE
:devious:
I would think that KISS would put on a helluva Super bowl half time show.
I would think that KISS would put on a helluva Super bowl half time show.
Just for once I'd like a show that's stripped down and raw maybe some Foo Fighters, Eminem (loved his ad), have a live table read of the Family Guy episode that the Superbowl preempted. I'd mention the White Stripes but they split up :disappointed::cry: I know Cage The Elephant, Jay-Z, American Idol Auditions (see how easy it is to avoid a these half-time shows)

The Halftime show sucked...Usher helped, but did not redeem :(
The quality of their show left me saying, who are these blackened peas people, and why would they let them perform their first ever live show on such a big event?

I was thinking it looks like Zod and the gang from Superman 2. Does Fergie sound sorta like Axl Rose when her voice isn't auto-tuned? I only know the band's big songs that make extensive use of voice distortion.
Dunno about Black Lanterns, but Fergie can make certain things of earth RISE!

The halftime show was a fail. So were most of the commercials - except for Passat Li'l Vader and the Thor/Captain America trailers. Oh well. At least I am not a Steelers fan.
Sorry I've never seen a halftime show that was good. At least this time they tried to make the show relevant to the time. This was the first time I've ever watched the majority of a halftime show.

When you're planning an event that is going to be seen in 232 countries, you want to put out a product that has some relevance. Using local acts would never work. and using someone like Lady Gaga doesn't work either because a lot of people still look at her as not having been at the top long enough. So they picked the Black Eyed Peas.
The sound was better than I thought it would be, and the vocals were generally spot-on. Not like The Who's last year when Roger Daltry couldn't hear himself singing and was off-key most of the performance. I'm not a fan of the Peas, nor do I listen to Fergie, but I had planned to not watch them, until Slash came out and then I sat down and was mildly impressed with the string of hits and the guest artists. The only thing I don't remember seeing were actual musicians playing drums and bass, etc and I wondered if that was pumped in. Still, the performance was mostly tight.
Would Metallica work? maybe. Remember, the Super Bowl is seen in 230 plus countries and broadcast in over 30 languages to approximately 1 billion viewers. Pop music and Classic Rock are the two best formats for worldwide appeal, so the committee that picks out the artists has a lot to take into account.
I thought the half time show was awful.
Everyone's performance was lackluster, even Slash looked bored playing guitar.
Usher was lip syncing and I realized Fergie does not look good on a large screen high-def T.V.
The tech guys couldn't get the V in love to light up so it looked like "lo e"
Overall very disappointing.

The halftime show isn't for you die-hard jersey wearing "men", it's to try and draw attention from the percentage of people who don't watch football.
They did sound really bad live though. Like it was just awkward to watch. We were just saying "um, eh, bah, wow this is just bad" You couldn't even really rip on them because it litereally was that uncomfortable to watch.
It wasn't bad. Especially considering this used to be a typical Superbowl half time show:

Sorry I've never seen a halftime show that was good.
Did you catch Prince in 2007 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohwSNRhYWAo)? He flat out killed. Perfect mix of original material and no-fail covers, and the Florida A&M marching band shows how to do Tron effects right.
The trick of the halftime show is that the artist has to be able to nail the 15-minute medley format. U2 made their big debut under exactly those circumstances at Live Aid, so they've got plenty of practice. Of course, we're never going to see the band that absolutely dominated in that format - but just try to imagine a Super Bowl halftime show featuring Queen.

That Prince show was probably the best I've seen.

I omitted that one because I'm horribly biased. FAMU is my Alma mater and Prince one of my favorite artists.
Even then I missed about half of the show
I've never particularly liked live shows of any assortment. I've never been able to get over the fact that they don't sound like they do if they're in a sound room.
I know my Wife and I would love it if they had Bon Jovi do the Superbowl Half time. That's tame/classic enough to please the conservatives and Modern/Relevant enough to please the younger fans.
The mics were cutting in and out alot I noticed, overall it is better with to watch with the sound off.
posted a link for the video
Fergie needed to wear the "Black" Mary Marvel costume.

I'd second the Black Keys with a highlight reel of each team's journey to the game (big hits and big TD's).
I think their commercial saturation (in actual commercials) would make them familiar enough to work without being a spectacle of anything other than flat out rocking.
EDIT: Also, the idea of Black Keys covering Queen gives me chills of awesomeness.
Why anyone is watching the Halftime Show instead of the Puppy Bowl is beyond me.

This is actually a big kicker for me with all the concerts I go to. Any band that actually sounds like their album (mostly metal/hard rock acts) gets some instant respect.
This being said, I couldn't see how the Black Eyed Peas would be that good live, as concerts should be about the performance more than the flashing lights one brings. Lo and behold I was unimpressed. Though it wasn't any worse than any other time I'd seen them on tv.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I will take some more of that please :)

Fergie sounded horrible in general but the sound guys did them no favors at all. I don't like the BEP but I almost felt bad for them. At least Usher did a split... I think the act was ambitious but between the singing, audio and technical problems it just ended up lackluster. All that said I don't really know what they should have as a halftime show. I'd have been equally bored with an aging rock group or something like that.
I am of the opinion that they should not do a musical performance at all. Instead, they should have a gladiator fight. With tigers and chariots and stuff.

Other than the terrible cameo by the talentless usher I thought it was pretty good actually. The sound was iffy, but that was the fault of the sound crew not the group, (except for usher who I don't think realized that his mic could even be turned on during a performance and mumbled his lines to remember the timing of the steps from his beginner dance class).
The show part however was great, I really enjoyed it. For some of the suggestions I have seen on here, Foo Fighters and White Stripes would be great, Metallica and KISS would make me turn my TV off.

It makes me sad because it makes me realize how old I am getting but trust me when I say that Bon Jovi is nowhere near modern or relevant enough for the younger fans. They may as well be Sam Cooke to the kids today. Heck Foo Fighters and White Stripes are just barely modern and relevant enough for the younger fans.
Yes Bon Jovi is only going to be know for the song everybody does at karaoke.
And Len, sadly White Stripes just called it quits. Of the groups mentioned I think Black Keys probably skirts the modern classic line the best.

SLVRSR4 and I have been to 3 Bon Jovi concerts together and I have been to 2 additional ones since Crush came out and there are just as many young fans there as older fans.

Okay, you're going to have to refresh my memory, because as far as I know, I've NEVER HEARD OF THE BLACK KEYS. I have no idea who they are. Is that something that I would have to be older to know? I'm 30 by the way.
Your Bon Jovi statement is INCREDIBLY off target by the way. They have had dozens of #1 singles over the past 25+ years. Just because YOU are unaware of most of them does not make you the voice of America.

There are THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of younger fans. Every one of these concerts that I have been to were stadium shows (twice at Soldier Field and once at the Allstate Arena, both in chicago.) The capacity of these stadiums for concert purposes is over 18,000 for the Allstate and 50,000 for Soldier field. Every concert that I've been to has been SOLD OUT and Bon Jovi has ROCKED THEM ALL.

Younger I guess. As a band they've been around since early 2000. I say skirt the modern classic line as they are a modern band that would appeal to the 'classic' fan.
A better group for that would likely be Red Hot Chili Peppers
And I'm well aware of Bon Jovi's track record, they are legends. Doesn't make them modernly relevant though. IIRC Kid Rock was also at that Chicago concert. His booking had a lot to do with bringing in the younger fan. You can't ignore that. Granted those fans likely knew Bon Jovi, but it's likely because of older siblings or parents. Or I guess thier early 2000s stuff. Still that's not modernly relevant.
What I like or don't like is irrelevant to the topic anyway, what matters in this context is modernly speaking are they making hit records. For all their past success, Bon Jovi is not on top in the modern era. BEP is and have been for almost the past 10 years.

Edit: Wife corrected the way I was reading that.
However, the three times I've seen him, the young girls that were at the concert were there for Bon Jovi FIRST and FOREMOST and any opening band was just a plus.

Sad news about the White Stripes. I have to agree on the Black Keys, they are an outstanding group, I love them and I am older than slvrsrf4, but I think a lot more tuned in to current music (no offense meant).
As for Jon Bon and the Jovi's they do have a lot of hits, there is no doubt, and I am sure they still sell out large venues. But I still don't think they have been particularly relevant for at least a decade. NKOTB had a lot of hits and still sell out huge venues, but I wouldn't call them relevant either.
