View Full Version : Home or store games?

Which do you prefer home or store/venue games? Or maybe you only collect and don't even like playing?
Since I like having a third option I went with neither home or venue. It would be easy to say both. I'm sure most of us would take all the games we can get so having a both option would be pointless for the poll.
Since it's been mentioned twice(once jokingly i'm assuming :) )I'll reiterate. The poll is which you like better home or venue. 99.9% of us like both so that option would make the whole poll worthless. Thanks for voting.

Despite creating the poll I had to think about my answer for a minute. There is plenty good to say about both. I went with home though. It's nice not having to worry about points and having battles go down to the last man standing. Having beer handy is nice too.
I like and play both. We need that option, poll fail. :classic:

If I HAD to choose, it would be home. My boys and I play 2000 + point battles with all sorts of scenarios, and at home I can play whenever I want. As late as I want. With as much beer as I want. Plus my daughter will hug the sentinels before I send them into battle.
Not that I don't love my venue (awesome store in Shrewsbury NJ "Amazing Stories") and my judge rocks - Ringer from this site.

I play at home to get ready for the store games. Needed a both option.
I prefer home slightly, but only because if my friends bring protected every week or cosmic spider-cheese at a home game I feel more comfortable savagely beating them.

This is a poll on which one you like better than the other. So a both option would just make the whole poll worthless. I might as well have just started a poll asking if people like playing heroclix or not. I guess I just didn't explain very well why that option was left out in my initial post.

I like both, actually. Had a friend over to play last night, having two friends over tonite. Participated in a tournament this past Saturday at the local venue, will play again this upcoming Saturday at the same venue. On the 19th I will be playing at an entirely different venue.
Home games let you use teams that you'd never pull out in a competitive venue. Also, home games let you practice teams before a tournament so you can work out the kinks, throw out the stinks, and weed out the finks.

The only other person I have the option to play games at home with would rather play Yahtzee or Monopoly. I say, "No, I'm not playing those stupid games, that's final."
So, as I'm filling out my Yahtzee card, I start thinking, Well, I could always use my Sinestro dice. Then, when Monopoly starts, I'll bring out Ronan as my playing piece.

It's not so much that I prefer store games as that, after a friend's death in 08 I no longer had anybody to play home games against.

I've only ever played home games on account of their being only 2 places i know of that host games.....and neither of them are really close. But i like it, i have plenty of room at my house, and I can play whenever for how long i want to. Chalk one up for the home games :)

Well, if I had that option, I'd have to give some thought to this poll. As it is, I voted for store/venues.
Years ago, before I ever discovered clix, I played Magic...Star Wars ccg...LotR tcg and was strictly a "home boy" in doing so. Possibly, one negative venue experience kept me from seeking out a store where I could play at that time.
When I was playing one or more of those card games, my one and only venue experience happened when I had to be the grown-up and straighten out a store owner and a Star Wars ccg tournament sponsor. They were trying to renege on the awarding of the previously announced tournament prizes after my stepson and his friend had played in the tourney as the only two people to show up. I had to go to the store and shame two adults into doing the right thing by pointing out that more important to me than the value of the card prizes was the importance of showing two kids that in this life, you're expected to keep your word. I also had to point out that people in law enforcement have a term for that kind of stuff: it's called "bait and switch."
The store owner was a friendly enough guy, but such shenanigans can keep you from going into mourning when a store closes--- as that one did, not too long afterward.
So I played those card games at home, usually with my stepson, or at the home of a former coworker.
But when I got into Heroclix, my stepson didn't follow, and I started going to venues. Today, for various reasons, playing at my home is less an option than it once was -- in fact, it's not an option at all (let's just say my wife would rather I go out to do my gaming) -- and my venue friends are more into playing at the store where we go, anyway.
If prize support doesn't matter (and it doesn't to me), one great thing about playing at someone's home is that it cuts down on your having to play someone you'd rather not.
But more than that...Holy Crow, I certainly do envy you guys who are able to mix clix and beer...;)

I only ever play at one of my local venues.
Although my six-year-old daughter is taking lots of interest in Heroclix, so maybe I'll be able to get a few at-home games in (prolly only to be schooled by a first-grader!)
I play at home but i prefer store games as it gives me more opponents to learn from.

Home games. I like creating house-rules on the fly, playing ridiculous scenarios, etc. And as other have said, beer. Beer is a must for the maximum gaming experience.
And as other have said, beer. Beer is a must for the maximum gaming experience.
Well, as somebody who reluctantly plays "dry" games, I suddenly see the opportunity for someone in these parts to establish a whole new kind of venue...the Heroclix Saloon --- with "Heroclix Girls" bringing the buffalo wings and beer to yer table!!!

Ignatz_Mouse
02/08/2011, 12:28
I like them both, but they are different.
At home, I am likely to play 2-3 games (or one huge one) against just one other person. I can't usually get more people out for playing at home. At a store, it's more of a group experience.

I like home games, cause I usually play with my friends in one of our apartments...we drink mad beers, play marathon games and put Dragon Ball Z on in the background. We make up ridiculous formats and then just chill. I enjoy playing at my FLGS, but it's always fun playing with my boys.

DreamEater
02/08/2011, 12:57
Most likely venue. Due to the fact if a group gets together its like once a month if that. So the venue is like the only option. But were all close at the venue. Its never a friendly game always name calling (but in a friend manner) The only problem with the venue is that they always want everyone on the same map. And usually im the first target most the time.

I play both, but I prefer home games if I have to choose. Home games let me play in a more relaxed environment, play to the last man standing, without time limits, and visit with family while I'm playing. It's also nice to play at the venue, see the guys, and play against some new people. The only issue is that because most of our games are home games, both my brother and I aren't used to playing under a time limit, trying to collect points, etc. I still do okay in venue events.
Going to the venue a lot can also be hard to manage, because I run a weekly league there (alternating 3 month stretches between Legends of the Old West and Blood Bowl), so being there twice a week is usually not reasonable. My wife also has a weekly exercise class she likes that happens on the same night, so we have to alternate Mondays so someone can watch my 5-year-old. I'm not taking my daughter to the game store to sit while I play Heroclix for 3 hours, so on those Mondays a home is the only option. ;)

i said store/venue game for a few reasons. 1 i dont really have anyone to play at home on any consistent basis. and 2 my venue is a looser more fun than competetive. so it all works out for me
BudPalmer
02/08/2011, 13:08
BudPalmer tends to flip flop on this. If someone were to hold a gun to BudPalmer's head (either one), Bud would have to pick home games as there are fewer chances of running into a douche-bag player. Because BudPalmer cannot play himself.

Venue. My house doesn't think carrying HeroClix for retail is viable in these economically-unstable times. (They've always given us a modest discount and free space to play. Being charged a couple bucks to get utterly wiped out stings a bit more.)
Since I popped out of my brick-chrysalis and matured into a beautiful case-buyer, I figure they like me as much.

As much as home games are probably the best. I have to pick venue's. Its the only place anymore I get to play.
The only home game's that my eldest son want to do anymore is 40K and even though I have an army built I suck at that game. I'm lucky to get "Next to Last Place " at 40K tourneys and he's won 3 of the last 4 we have gone to.

I don't really get to play at home, though I like the idea of home games, and often try single player scenarios. Venues generally are okay, but I find myself uncomfortable, and facing either extremely strong or weak opponents, or generally finding the venues to be uncomfortable to play at (due to travel/costs/space). I do like playing at venues but my comfort level is fairly low at venues (rarely a problem with specific players/venues more a personal comfort level thing)
I mostly collect now, and that's about it. I would play if there was interest at home, but there isn't. So I'm not entirely sure where I fit in this poll

In fact some of the most fun games I’ve played have been using the Play By Post here. Since that’s not specifically an option, and I play those while I’m at home, I chose “home” since they have the laid back, no pressure home feel to them. But I’ve played playing at a local vnue recently too, and that’s been a lot of fun as well. Not as cutthroat competitive as I was expecting it to be.

Venue, simply due to being able to attract new players, I mean there's only 2 of us here thus far lol.
Plus, more space for more than one game, if I played at home, my table only supports one big map.

How hard would it have been to title this poll "Do you enjoy home games or venue games better?" Answer: Not hard at all. If this would have been done, anyone would know what the point was right from the start and could vote correctly and not have to guess the intent.

It wouldn't have been hard at all but it isn't necessary either. Reading the first post keeps people from having to guess anything.
I get the impression that most of you play for prizes/competively when at the stores.
Me? I've little interest in that style of play. Infact, I actually don't like the effect weekly prizes have on games.
Fortunately the shops I play at are usually as laid back as your home games. No beer, but still....
Most of the games played there are NOT tournies/prize supported.
The advantage playing at the shop has?
1) It's a good central location for many players.
2) It's good advertising for the shop & the game(s). People see games being played, they know that there's someone to play with & somewhere local to buy them.
3) There's a wide range of players (all games, not just clix).
Many of whom I like just fine. But there's very few I'd ever invite to play at my house. But we can all play together at the shop.
Office.
When I was in grad school, I set up a table in my office and would play with other grad students. That was the best.
I did the same for a while when this was the most useful option -- setting it up for a Friday night gaming session where we'd stick around after hours and play multiple games often into the wee hours of the following morning.
I believe I would refer to this as "home" as the structure is whatever you determine it to be and it's not prize-driven.

I actually played more regularly at the shop during the hiatus (no prizes). ;)
I'll play with prizes or not, though I won't turn them down. I generally will buy or trade for LEs that I want out of a prize kit before they come up during the local venue's schedule.
I've actually decided to make a concerted effort to get to the venue more often, because it was reported that attendance was lagging. I definitely don't want to see the local Heroclix scene dry up!

To play Devil's Advocate for a minute - polls are often posted on the front page (this one is, FWIW), and many repondents will probably respond with their answer directly from there. Since the first post isn't printed there, some responses will only be based on the poll title and the options. This can mean that a more exact title will result in more accurate responses (in fact I imagine that there are some who see the poll on the front page, don't see an answer that applies to them, and just give it a pass altogether).
I like the poll, but I did almost give it a pass simply because I play both home games and venue games, in nearly equal measure.

I don't know if this was directed at me, but I wasn't actually trying to be critical. It's just something that I notice from time to time...I'll see a poll on the front page, answer it based on the information there, and then be taken to the poll to find out after reading the first post that the intent was something different. I guess you can say "always go to the poll before voting", but then how much sense does it make to give the option to respond on the first page? I *think* the intent is that there should be enough information in just the title and response options for people to be able to answer the poll.
I don't personally have a problem with KillerSavage's poll title; I was just trying to possibly explain some of the criticism he (and apparently other pollsters) was getting. I view these polls as just for fun, so the importance of "accuracy" is questionable. Can't we all just get along? ;)

No I think this is it people coming from the home page that keep asking where the both option is. Despite the answer is right there in my OP. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Me personally if I'm not sure of what the person is asking I go to the thread. Usually there is additional info in that OP like if it's a multiple choice poll etc.

I've played in one venue tournament and was completely embarrassed in all three games I played. While I'd like tp play more at a venue to improve my playing, I love getting together with the three friends I have who play and spend an entire day playing heroclix. Since we're getting older and live in different locations, it's becoming harder to get together to play, but when we do, we usually have a lot of fun until it gets to be aroudn 11 p.m. and we've done nothing but play and we get tired and tempers get short hahahahaha

Had to go with home. There isnt a cheese factor there and Im free to experiment with goofball teams and still enjoy them without getting my face pounded to a bloody pulp.
both! home is practice, venues are game day.

Exactly! ;)
The trouble is I very rarely even use the home page. I go straight to my usercp. From there I go to threads I've posted to that have active discussion or general discussion. In addition to that when it comes to polls I always read the description in the OP rather trying to vote immediately.
Since I explained why "both" was not an option twice in the OP and once in response to a post I didn't think it would be a problem.

Home for sure. Beer, music, no annoying kids, no stinky gamers, and no customers interupting games. Plus I can talk all the crap I want to.

Home games. Absolutely home games.
More interesting, more relaxed. You see, I have this penchant for playing fun games. At home, I get fun. I don't have to worry about someone trying to tell me Winter Soldier, Sgt. Rock, and Thing are a theme. Nor do I have to worry about anyone (or almost everyone) trying to ego trip.
Please note that I'm not attacking the metagame either. I'm specifically calling out the douchery that accumulates at the nearest venue.

Can't take ego trippers in this (or any other dork game, really) game seriously.

I prefer home games mainly for the laziness factor where I don't have to leave my house. :p And obviously store games are scheduled at certain days and times and I'm not always free to make it to the games.
Also not a big fan of BFC's and feats (which generally are played at the venue I sometimes go to) and even less a fan of theme probs (which are always played) so in home games we get to phase all that out.
Still I really enjoy the store games. Great group of people at the venue I sometimes play at. They're also all really good so I've learned a great deal from them. Just wish I could make it to the games more often than I do.

Me either. It's also why I don't need them wasting my time. :knockedou
I went with store games. We have a great venue with some great guys! Once a week is about perfect too.
I also really enjoy the time in between making teams. I usually make a few of them and they tend to improve each time. I hate to say it but that is almost as much fun as playing them.
At home you can do stuff like re-enact the Korvac saga and whatnot.
AND crack jokes, some metagamers tend to have the sense of humor of a cardboard box.

I don't play anymore, but I voted for venue games. You don't really want those weirdos from the venue in your house, do you? I'll bet you they won't want to leave either! :p

At a store, it's more of a group experience.
