View Full Version : How many rounds?
For purposes of this survey, please assume the following:
300 point game.
50 minute rounds.
If your venue plays different formats or timeframes, I think that's great. But it's not what I'm asking about.
The question is....
How many rounds (I take a turn and you take a turn = 1 round) do you estimate usually take place in your matches?
Contingency Plan

At most, I would say 10 total rounds. More likely about 8.
We have a few guys that apparently enjoy taking a few extra minutes per turn once they are ahead....:ermm:
Hope that helps.

This...our guys aren't purposefully stalling but they do like to carefully review their actions, multiple times.
Ooops answered before I understood the question....I answered 3 thinking 3 rounds per event.
But I believe I did some numbers on this and it was around 15 to 20 rounds per game.
Those last 5 rounds can go pretty fast as they are mostly attack....roll...miss....attack....roll...hit....attack...rolll....miss....move....move...attack...r oll...game over.
I can total up some stuff I have from my play by post matches if you want.

Around 12, but we all tend to miss quite a bit which drags things out a lot.

Woops. I accidentally put three also think it was how many rounds of games we play not rounds in a game.
Maybe 8-15
Depends on how fast the game is won or how slow and opponent goes.
Play By Post Data:
Legion of Doom vs Legionares (350-pts) - 24 Rounds
Alpha-Flight vs Birds of Prey (350-pts) - 19 rounds
let me know if you want me to keep tabulating...I have about 25-30 matches on play-by-post at 350-pts?

To be honest I've never even thought about it. If I vote it would only be a guess and not even a good one.
I almost mistook the question as well.

i did the same thing, answering 3...i would go with 15 for a 300pt game...you'll have a reasonable chance of getting down to the last bits.
so change one 3 to a 15 ;)

Another sweet poll.
Thank you
I answered 12, but I think some where in the 10 to 15 range is about right.

I misunderstood the question. NM.
Interesting question, wonder what the goal is for the data. :)
Thanks!!
We have 3 Rounds set unless we have a huge prize at stake, i.e. a Brick for the winner, than we go until there is only One undefeated left. We'll have anywhere between 6 to 12 players on weekly events we don't need a fourth round unless we have the time and have something designed to play more than 3 rounds.
As far as turns per game I would say 10 to 15 depending on the player. Some guys just like to go rushing in and have a free for all. Others based on their team build play the strategy angle. Which I can do both depending on my opponent.

It all depends on the theme, who I'm playing against, and what teams are on the board. I've never actually counted turns in my games to see what the average is. I'd guess it's usually 10-12, so I'm going to vote 11.

I think if you have 20+ turns in a 50-minute game you're probably doing it wrong. :p

The question is a bit misleading therefore your answer is gonna be reflect #3 as the winner
I'm not really sure (so I didn't vote), but I know less than 10.
When I first started playing, the venue would do 10 rounds or 50 minutes, whichever came first; the games were typically 300 points (this was back when the tournament formats were much more strictly dictated by WK). I can't remember ever going a full 10 rounds, although we also rarely went 50 minutes.
Edit: Went ahead and voted. Went with 9, since 9 is less than 10 (how to you like those math skills?) :)

One. Because my opponent always concedes when they see my team.
Well, at least one of us wants to concede when they see my team....

wow should have read the important part first. I picked 3 but i thought that was rounds (games). I would say in 6-10. Of course most kitchen matches arent timed so we go 8-14 rds sometimes. Less if more players.
heh, nbperp, guess its a fail on question writing, i also put three, you might want to re-word the question. :nervous: :p
Hah! Good poll!
We're all about the slug-fest when we play, so we get on with rounds pretty quickly with very little "down time" while pondering moves/possibilities. Nothing better than getting right to it - often times the best defense is a good offense!
There's no better feeling than facing a guy who takes 7 minutes to go over the infinite possible outcomes of any action given to a character, finally makes that action, and then that character gets KO'd in 45 seconds from 2 quick moves from you that they didn't even see! That feeling is perhaps the best in the entire game. Wiping smug looks off faces since Infinity Challenge!
If they are honestly trying to finish the game in the time alloted about 20 if it is a close match is about right for my games.
I do however play much faster than virtually everyone I have played against.

Yeah, 'rounds' means something completely different in these parts  You may want to rephrase the question to:
'How many turns in a typical 50 minute tournament'
I answered 3 thinking that by 'rounds' you actually meant rounds and not turns. Realistically, there are about 15ish 'turns' for each player in a 50 minute match.
And folks wonder why the rules are so difficult to understand...

I've always been in favor of a Chess-style timer for Heroclix. Equal amount of time for each player. I played a 500 point game where I got two turns, and my opponent got 3. His 3rd turn took over 25 minutes (it started before the judge called the 25 minute halfway mark!!!) That was the least fun game of Heroclix I ever played. Ever since then I have been a strong advocate for imposing equal playing time.

Oops, almost misunderstood the question.:nervous:
Probably from ten to fifteen, depending on the teams. I wouldn't say it could ever consistently go lower than six.
Edit: Gosh dang, it looks like a large chunk of people misunderstood it.

Man that should be a range, not specific. I haven't played in so long, I don't think I could give a good answer anyway. Tournament coming up on Friday though!

I think most people understood the question. Which is kinda dumb really, it's not a trick question or anything.

5 because I play with slow ### people. Nothing worst than trying to rush your turn because you know your opponent is going to take forever and often it's a matter of how many rounds you play that wins the match when it comes to victory points.

I did the same exact thing. Whoops.
It's tough for me to say how many rounds take place in a single game at our venue. It's all over the place for us. Some games last only 4 rounds. Others go on for 25+ rounds. I can't really place a fair estimate on it. Sorry.

took a wild guess at 16. trying to think back (cause i Really don't pay attention) i proly take 8 turns. maybe. the better i know the opponent, the faster the game seems to end, in my favor or not XD

15 rounds to 50 minutes = 3 rounds every 10 minutes = 6 turns in ten minutes = 3 turns in 5 minutes = .6 turns in 1 minute.
On average that seems about right. Someone taking their time, planning their moves, but there's also the endgame entailing move/attack/clear/attack/move/clear/clear/pass in which a 1 round can pass in 2 seconds.
I'd say somewhere between 8 and 12 most often. Sometimes less, rarely more.

Stupidest poll ever.
This is not true. Just because people jump to a vote before fully understanding the question doesn't make the poll stupid. It's no reason to be rude either.

I'd say 10-12. With 300 pts one team is usually done by then.
We usually play 500 pts unless it's sealed though, and tend to go more turns. I never count, but I'm one of the slower players at our venue (most of my games are at home, and we don't use a time limit, so I'm used to thinking through my turns), and I was reflecting on a game I played at the venue last night that seemed exceptionally slow. That game was about 13 game turns (each player got 13 turns) when time was called.
I might have misread the question, but I saw the options went up to 27, so I figured it couldn't be tournament rounds for local events. ;)
Heroclix is like chess....but slower (according to this poll).
I too almost selected 3 but decided to read the replies first. I was a judge before the first round no-attack rule and rule of 3 so the games should have been quicker, still a good 40% took the full 50 minutes. Shorter dials and power creep should have the same effect, so I guess that it evens out in the end. Games that take the full 50 minutes can be kind of split into the two groups: (1) stalers and thinkers 10-12 turns or (2) swarm teams and darksiders 20+ turns. So I'll split the difference with 15.

yup the question was wrong,... if stated "TURNS" it would have yielded better results.
I would have to say, it depends on your opponent,... but it can go any where from 12-20. a person that knows how to play will move faster, a person that doesn't know, or second guesses himself will of course take longer.
I would have to add in, depends on your dials. if you have a team with short dials they can quickly get KOed with a single hit. your game will end quickly.
Not sure TBH. I know it can take a hell of a lot of turns if I'm using HT Jay Garrick w/ AP and he's my last guy. lol
misunderstood the question as well. I would say about 8 to 10 rounds.

As someone who does survey work in his research a lot, given the number of errors I would humbly suggest that the results are invalid due to the ambiguity of the question and the number of errors being made by people.
are people thinking the question is how many games per event? because I just don't see that many games ending after 3 rounds, like ever...
I voted seven, due to the time limit. I thought that was about average for thoughtful players...

I think this poll is going to be very skewed, because a lot of people will vote 3 (like me, sorry) thinking tournament rounds before reading the OP =[
Please remove one of the 3 votes and replace it with a 12. It is hard to say what the average is, but this seems about right.

This poll raises some interesting points about the timing methods used in tournament play. I haven't played many tournaments, but it seems to me that perhaps the rounds should be timed as well. I've seen people get the upper hand early in the game, and take their time making "action" decisions to milk the clock so that they can maintain their lead. Just a thought. Maybe round times are regulated in professional tournaments. Does anyone know if this is the case?

In professional sports (American Football anyhow) there is a play clock. When The team exceeds the play clock there are delay of game penalties. How one would translate that to clix I'm not sure. My first instinct is that it's better off left alone.
