The black car pulled up to the gates of the Thymesciran embassy, flanked by a police escort that allowed it to cut through the throng of news vans and reporters camped out on the sidewalks surrounding the building. As Princess Diana stepped out of the back of the car, the camera flashes were as blinding as the shouted questions were deafening. She made no reaction and said not a word, walking with the kind of resolution possessed by a woman who has made a hard decision and accepted its necessity.

She didn't allow herself the luxury of bursting through the doors, of expressing outwardly the fury she was grappling with inside. She didn't let herself have the release of slamming the door behind her as she entered the Embassy. She kept her poise and presented the strong, confident visage that her people needed to see. If they were going to be part of what came next, to support her in what had to happen now, they needed to believe that she was a capable commander who believed deeply in the necessity of what she was asking of them.

Once inside, she saw that basically the entire staff was there waiting for her. She could see the worry in their eyes. And she saw Vulko, dear old Vulko, whose face seemed like it had run out of hope long ago. She felt heavy with the weight of what had to be done, but there were no options left. She closed her eyes and took a calming breath, then opened them slowly to address everyone.

"For more than a week, we have been doing our best to win a debate over the future of Atlantis. Crown Prince Orm has taken King Orin captive and is keeping him in daily torture while committing atrocities in his name. He plans to execute the king for crimes he didn't commit and steal the crown, and we know that the likely long-term consequence of this is war with the surface.

"We have tried to convince the members of the Security Council that it is in their best interest to support us in a resolution against Prince Orm. And we've been winning - 10 of the 13 chairs have sided with us. Today was our last chance to win over the final three.

"We were not successful."

She could see the crestfallen looks. Many had known from the moment she walked in the doors what had happened just from her demeanor, but others had held hope. That hope was gone, now, and it broke her heart to have to take it away from them.

"Atlantis, China, and Russia have refused us, and when we passed the resolution without them, China used their veto power to negate it. We now stand alone and time is running out for the King - Orm is aware of everything that's happened and likely plans to expedite his plot to finish this business before we have a chance to rally."

"So…" Donna Troy said, stepping forward. Diana could see the same mask of confidence on her sister's face that she wore herself. "It's over, then. The UN option is off the table."

"It is," Diana nodded. "And though our allies will support us in the use of military force against Atlantis to bring down Orm, they will not be able to lend significant material aid."

"They won't stand against us, but they won't send their own soldiers to fight," Donna frowned. "Typical. Let the women do their fighting for them."

Diana turned to address her staff once more. "Everyone, I want to thank you deeply for the long, hard hours of work you have put into this. These past days have been grueling, and I don't want you to think that that effort was wasted. But now it's time to move from a diplomatic strategy to a military one. I am going to Thymescira and informing my sisters that it is to be war. I expect a formal declaration drafted by the time I return. Further, we're going to have to deal with the press outside - declaring war with Atlantis will probably be enough to get their attention and we need to be on top of the war of perception. This will not be any easier now, but we're in it together and can rely on each other for strength and support.

"We knew this was a possibility from the start, and that it would be all but impossible to win in the diplomatic arena. Steel yourselves and know that we are serving a greater good."

"Alright, people, let's get going," Donna started rallying the staff as Diana went up the staircase with Vulko, leaving the commotion behind.

The mood had changed in Titans Tower lately. It was like a cloud had lifted and the sun had come out. Deathstroke and his League of Assassins had nearly torn them apart, and had cost them so much - but they had faced him and won. Defeating him in a direct fight, besting his assassins, ending his reign and actually capturing him for trial… it was like exorcising a demon from their past and they could all relax again.

Old wounds were healing; Donna was back on good terms with them again, Garth was alive and back with the team, Wally was spending more time on the west coast to be with his friends, and even their old teammates who had only ever been Titans for an eyeblink of time were visiting the Tower more frequently after having survived Deathstroke's attempt on their lives.

But not everybody was as upbeat. Cyborg spent most of his time in his machine shop these days, working on ways to lock down his software and firmware so that nobody like Gizmo could ever hack his systems again. The fact that he'd been used as a tool against his friends had really shaken him; hard as it had been to adjust to his life after the majority of his body had been replaced with cybernetics, he'd always felt like he was still in control of his own actions. What Gizmo had done to him and done through him was such a total invasion that he was having a hard time grappling with it.

Beast Boy was doing his best to try and lighten his friend's mood, but it wasn't helping much. The trademark humor he usually employed as a way of shrugging off the difficult parts of life wasn't working on Vic like it used to. Seeing his best friend so sullen and withdrawn was jarring for him. Terra actually seemed to be putting herself out there for him, bringing his own spirits back up when he'd get down too low. She would even go so far as to leave herself open for easy comebacks just to try and give him irresistible setups, knowing that nothing brought a smile back to his face like the opportunity to chirp "That's what she said!"

But Cyborg's seclusion aside, the hard times had brought them all much closer. The Titans had always been like a surrogate family, a bunch of siblings getting together away from 'Mom and Dad.' But now it had become even more pronounced. Roy had really thrown himself into being 'Wonder-Dad,' spending most of his time with his daughter Lian and surprising everybody with how good he turned out to be at fatherhood. He was no Ward Cleaver, but the Titans family was far from TV Land. Whatever the case, if any of them had doubts that Roy could handle raising a little girl, those fears were being put to rest day by day, and having that little girl romping around the Tower was a sight to see for everyone. Even Raven would watch her with seeming endless fascination.

Dick and Kory had been growing closer as well. He'd been making more and more time for her, going out on 'date nights' days in a row and working together in costume as well as out. He'd been putting a lot of his spare time into investigating the 'Supermen' mystery, particularly the Superboy of the Midwest. The investigation had turned up little regarding his origins, but the more pieces of the puzzle he was assembling, the more Dick was confident that the kid wasn't a real threat. Kory had even suggested outright offering him a place with the Titans, and Dick had considered, but it brought him to a curious realization.

"We aren't kids anymore," he said, sitting back in his chair at the Titans monitor station as Kory leaned back, half-sitting on the computer terminal's desk. "It's crazy-- I hadn't really thought about it like this in a while, but now… We're all getting older. I mean, when we started this thing, we were just kids. Hell, I was 13 years old. It's been… more than ten years."

"You think Superboy is too young?" she asked, not understanding.

"No, that isn't it," he sighed. "It's just… I mean, even Gar is older than this kid looks to be. Sure he doesn't act like it most days, but… What the Titans used to represent was a place for us to come together with other kids our age who could understand and relate to the problems we were going through. It was a sanctuary for us when we had to spend most of our days surrounded by kids who had no comprehension of what our lives were like. How could I talk to friends in the 8th grade about having to spend my nights risking my life against people twice my age, twice my size-- getting shot at, stabbed, beaten up by people like Killer Croc and Two-Face…

"That's what this Superboy needs - kids his age to relate to. Not a bunch of twenty-somethings trying to remember what it was like to be that age."

"I don't know," she shrugged. "I would think you would have a lot of things to offer him."

"Yeah, we probably could, but what we couldn't give the kid is a peer group he could pal around with. We aren't the Teen Titans anymore."

They were interrupted by a teleportation request message from Donna Troy. The Tower had recently been joined to the Justice League's teleportational network, an interconnected web of portal hubs that joined all their bases and major places of operation so they could easily travel between without having to do the more lengthy and complicated computation of a localized beam-port. It had been at the behest of Batman, which surprised Dick, but his former mentor had said flatly that they should never have to worry about losing lives because they couldn't get to their target quickly enough again.

"There will be more Deathstrokes," he had said. "A serious team can't afford to be slow."

Nightwing had been too surprised by the gesture to argue, not that he would have - he just had to fight the reflex to argue with anything Batman said as a matter of course. Things were changing.

Dick keyed to accept the request and the t-pad nearby lit up with bright yellow light. It swirled around a silhouette that took shape and grew more substantial as Donna materialized. He was taken aback at her appearance when she stepped down.

She was fully armored in a silver breastplate emblazoned with the 'WW' emblem along with silvered bracers and greaves, dark red articulated leather protecting much of the rest of her. She held a helmet under her arm and a sword hung from her hip. A long cape of crimson fabric inlaid with gold stars draped off her shoulders and swirled behind her as she walked forward. She was a woman ready for war.

"Donna," Dick said, standing to greet her. "What do you need? Is it something serious--"

"I need to see Garth," she said simply, accepting his handshake and half-hug. "It's important and I don't have a lot of time."

"Uh, yeah. Sure. I'll take you."

They found Garth in meditation on the beach of Titans Island. He was deeply focused and energy swirled around his body. He opened his eyes as they approached and let the power dissipate. He smiled when he saw who it was, but the smile faded somewhat when he took in Donna's armor.

"Donna," he said. "Something's wrong?"

"Things are happening in Atlantis, Garth," she said. "I felt you had to be told, and if you wanted to be involved in what comes next, then you're welcome to join us."

"Tell me everything," he said, preparing himself for the worst. As she laid out the story, he felt like it was worse than the worst he could have imagined.

"Orm wouldn't do this," he said. "He… wouldn't do this. He loves Aquaman too much to go this far. And war? It just… doesn't make sense."

"A lot of things changed while you were away," Donna said sadly. "Orm loved his brother, but his love of country is stronger. It's making him do crazy things. Terrible things. And he thinks a war is the only thing that will protect his people."

"Who picks a fight because they think it'll make them safer?" he said, seething heat churning beneath the still surface of his calm. She looked at the scars on his face, the way he held himself, and was amazed at how much he'd grown. He was almost a completely different man from the boy she'd known. But his calm demeanor was the same as it had ever been.

"People do strange things when they're afraid. Sometimes dangerous things."

"And now you have to go to war to prevent another war," he said with hard eyes. "What makes your answer better than his?"

"I don't have a good answer for that, Garth. Not one you'd like. But I know that we're saving lives. We aren't engaging all of Atlantis, we're going after Orm and his royal guard. We're trying to pull back the wool from the eyes of your people so they can see what's been done to them and to others in their name. Our plan is to make this fast and precise enough to cut out the cancer before it can spread. If this works, we'll be waging one battle that will prevent a wider war, not start one."

"Cancer," Garth said, walking toward the water and letting his feet sink in. The slow roll of the tide washed against his calves as he contemplated the horizon.

"I was his squire, you know," he said. "Taught me to fight, to live with honor… He helped raise me. He and Orin, they protected me when I was supposed to be put to death. Those people-- they saw my purple eyes and wanted to kill me out of some stupid superstition. I was a child, and it took an outsider and an exile to save my life. I always had more love for them than I did for Atlantis as a whole. Most of those ignorant, superstitious idiots could dry out and burn for all I cared…"

He wiped at his face, but Donna couldn't see his expression. She could feel the pain, though, and it was hard to be so near and so helpless.

"I'm coming with you," he said when he finally turned back around. "If you're going to arrest Orm, I have to be there."

"Only if you’re sure it’s what you want, Garth," she said, holding his hand. “It won’t be easy for you to have to face him now. And we won’t let this end any other way except with Aquaman free and Orm gone. Are you sure you’ll be able to go through with this when it comes time?”

"I have to see what he's become myself," he said. "I have to be able to look into his eyes and know the truth. I came back for a reason, Donna; there's something I'm meant to do. Something only I can do. I don't know what it is, yet, and maybe-- maybe this is it. Maybe I'm supposed to be there to prevent this fight from becoming a war.

"Maybe if I'm there, I can turn him back from this."

"Okay," Donna nodded. "I’m glad you’re coming; you're first-hand knowledge of the capitol city will make this much easier."

"Hold up, Donna," Dick stepped in. "If you're going and Garth is going, then the Titans are going, too."

"Dick, I don't…"

"Don't try it, Donna," he shook his head. "We're a family. Always have been - even when it was hard. Especially when it was hard. And we have a chance to be one again. If you have to go through something like this, you don't have to do it without your friends beside you."

"We aren't talking about stopping Dr. Light from robbing a bank, Dick - this is a major military operation in an underwater city. The Amazons have magic that will let us breathe and to protect us from the pressure of the depths, and Garth is a natural-born Atlantean-- what about the rest of you? Is Roy going to shoot arrows underwater?"

"My starbolts work just fine underwater," Starfire said, folding her arms. "Gar can turn himself into a shark or manta or something--"

"A manta probably isn't the best idea, with Atlantis' recent history," Dick winced slightly.

"Whatever," she shrugged. "The point is that we aren't helpless. If you Amazons can swing swords, we Titans will find a way to help our own."

"And who are you to all of this, anyway?" Donna asked, stepping up to her but having to look up to meet the taller girl's eyes.

"I'm the woman who loves him," she said, looking at Dick and taking his hand. "Some things have changed while you were away too, Donna Troy."

"You'll have a better chance of winning with us than you would without us," Dick said. "And we'll feel better knowing we're doing something to prevent this war than we would sitting on our thumbs and hoping for the best. Don't try and talk us down from this one."

Donna sighed heavily, shaking her head.

"Alright," she said. Then she actually laughed a little. "You know, Diana actually warned me that this would probably happen. I wonder if it's what she was hoping for all along.”

"I guess we'll find out when we see her," Dick smiled back. "Let's gather our troops - we've got to get back to Thymescira and find out what the plan is and where we fit in."

From the shores of Thymescira, the Amazons and Bana-Mighdal boarded ships that sank beneath the water and plummeted into the deep. The Titans were in the command vessel with Wonder Woman, Donna Troy and Artemis, who had been as put off by the addition of the young heroes as Donna had suspected. Wonder Woman had welcomed them even if she was sad to bring them into this situation. But she silenced Artemis' complaints with a simple proclamation:

"These young people have risked their lives over and over and more than once have succeeded where the rest of us have failed. If they choose to be part of our effort, then our cause is that much closer to victory."

Still, it was eerie sinking through the water, knowing that they were a short while away from a warzone. There was no Justice League here; they were fighting Prometheus in France. There was no Justice Society. Not even a JLI. There was no grand gathering of heroes united under one banner. It was just the Titans surrounded by warrior women in submersibles protected by magic.

Arsenal fidgeted with the light collar around his neck. It was a magical charm that would supposedly generate a field of oxygen around his head while underwater and keep his body from being crushed by the pressures of the deep, but they hadn't seen it in action and some of them were a little more uneasy about it than others.

"You're fine with a gun?" Nightwing asked, pointing to the Bana-Mighdalian longarm at Arsenal's side.

"Hey, archery is my shtick, but I'm not an idiot," he shrugged with a smile. "I was trained by Checkmate - I know my way around guns. And this thing is supposed to be as accurate underwater as above, so it's an easy choice."

"You okay? You look tense."

"Well there is the little matter of sailing underwater to pick a fight with a guy and his army. Might have me a bit on edge."

"No, I get it, it's just different. You're usually the fearless one charging in while I'm trying to work out every contingency."

"Yeah, well… what can I say, man? I'm a daddy now, you know? It's messing with me. I think about going down there and raising hell and all that keeps coming into my head is Lian growing up an orphan. Or, god help me, being raised by that b#### Cheshire."

"You didn't have to come, Roy."

"You kidding me? Hell yes I had to come. If this doesn't work and Orm does what they say he's doing, it could mean World War III. I'm stopping this mess here and now to protect my little girl, and if I have to fight a war to do it then that's what's happening. You don't have to worry about my head, Fearless Leader; I'm all-in and focused. It's just a different experience having something I'm really fighting for instead of just beating heads for fun."

"Try enjoying the scenery, Harper," Hawk said with a lascivious smile as he watched an Amazon pass by. His eyes were glued on her front until they removed themselves and became pasted to her backside. "I'm in this for the chicks."

"Don't be crude!" Dove gasped, slapping his arm.

"Who's crude? I'm just being honest," he laughed. "And I'm figuring I'll get a hero's welcome after we win this thing and return to an island full of hot, single ladies in togas."

"High five!" Beast Boy smiled, reaching across the aisle to Hawk. The bigger man just looked at his green hand, then back to the boy's open-mouthed grin as Gar nodded silently, then back to the hand before turning and folding his arms, leaving the fiver hanging. Beast Boy slowly withdrew his lonely hand and sank into his chair.

"Okay, Titans," Wonder Woman said as she walked back from the bridge of the ship to where they sat in the launch bay. Her golden armor gleamed in the soft lights. She was intimidating, but having her as their leader made them feel like they were at the center of one of the ancient Greek epics about the small army driving back the wicked and winning the day. Just her presence made them feel like they were going to win this fight.

"Are you prepared for the drop?" she asked. "You remember the plan?"

"Yes, ma'am," Nightwing said, nodding.

"We're following your lead," Arsenal agreed. "You say 'jump,' we say 'How? We're underwater.'"

"You say 'swim,' we ask 'how fast?'" Dove said, smiling as she joined the verbal patter. She was really feeling like a Titan, now - she was even almost quippy, if she did say so herself.

"Keep your spirits high," Wonder Woman nodded, dead serious. "You're going to see horrible things when this starts. You may have to do horrible things yourselves. But this isn't like any fight you've had before - these enemies aren't going to pull punches. They won't be fighting with fists, they'll have swords, spears, guns, and they'll be trying to kill you. You fought the Apokaliptian hordes when Darkseid invaded our world; this fight is no different - if we win, we are saving the world from a war that could cost tens of thousands of lives just to start.

"There is no time now to question why you're here, only to fight with every bone, muscle, and sinew in your body. Fight to the last, protect your allies, and defeat your enemies. Are you ready?"

"We are," Nightwing said.

"Then prepare yourself for Poseidon's own hell."

"People of Atlantis, hear me!" Orm shouted, his voice and image being projected not only to the massive crowd filling the arena, but also to every Atlantean citizen glued to their monitors in their homes, from every province in the kingdom, in every corner of every ocean.

The ancient coliseum was the center of ancient Tritonis, but was far from the site of the modern-day city. The ravages of time and war had not been kind, and the city had moved and rebuilt, growing larger and more impressive than anything the ancients could have imagined. But they were a people who held their past near, and they kept the old city from being consumed by the waters. Orm knew the significance of the place, and it's why he chose it - the end of one era, the fall of a tyrant, the rise of a new King that would hearken back to the glories of times past.

So it was that he stood at the center of a dais erected in the center of the huge coliseum, dressed in ceremonial armor fashioned in a style not seen in centuries, with his own brother on his knees and shackled to cross-stones behind him.

They will look at his hair, hear my words and think of Koryak, Orm thought, knowing well the myths and legends surrounding the ancient tyrant sorcerer-king. He knew they would now cheer to see Orin fall, and unite as one under his new rule. And after everything that had happened, he was finally at peace with that.

So he called out to the people. He shouted and he opined in a dramatic speech, decrying the abuses of power from King Orin and drudging up every heart-rending memory of the last several years, starting with the Manta War and carrying forth from there. It was a speech calculated to arouse passion and hatred and fear - to fill their nostrils with the scent of blood and make them cry out for more.

When they were in a lather, chanting and screaming, he raised the Trident of Atlantis over his head. The weapon was a symbol of the king for nearly one hundred generations, and his carrying it spoke volumes.

"The trial of King Orin was held and the verdict delivered," he said, when all was quiet. He turned and leveled the point of the trident at his brother. "You are found guilty of high treason, tyranny, and crimes against the people of your kingdom. Therefore, you are now stripped of your crown, your title, and your name, and are to be drained of the life's water until you are dead."

Orin raised his head slowly, so weary from his months of captivity in the dungeon that he was hardly himself. The pallor of his skin, the circles under his eyes and shaggy hair and beard, all made him nearly resemble the monster Orm had been forced to portray him as to the people.

But in that moment, their eyes met and he felt a chill run down his spine. In that one last look, he felt the weight of Orin's utter condemnation. Not a word was said, but he could feel it running through his soul.

I have seen into your heart, Orin's eyes told him. And have found it blackened and bereft. You are not my brother. You are not my kinsman. You have betrayed me, and I go to my grave with nothing but my hate for you forever.

Orm held his lips tightly shut to stave off a quiver. He had to be king, now - for his people. Everything he had done had been for them. He had to be a villain to be the hero. Perhaps on the other side of the veil, his brother would finally understand.

He lowered the butt of the trident into a socket on the dais, and the gemstones and runic carvings lit up a brilliant, glaring turquoise. Bubbles rushed from the ground beneath Orin and the crossed stones he was chained to, growing more and more dense as the water was drained in a column around him and he was left in a shaft of oxygen. Then, even the oxygen began to drain.

Orin drifted upward in a column of emptiness in the middle of the coliseum that was rapidly becoming a vacuum, and as the oxygen was sucked from the area so too was the liquid. This ancient ceremonial execution drained the water from a being until they were dehydrated and suffocated to death. It hadn't been used in several hundred years, but Orm - King of Atlantis - used it now on his beloved sibling.

With slowness and reverence, Orm lifted the crown of Atlantis from a pedestal and placed it on his head. The people erupted in applause.

"My liege," a soldier said, kneeling at the base of the stairs leading to the dais. Orm at first took it for a symbolic gesture, but the man didn't leave, so he waved a hand.

"Now is not the time, Captain."

"Sir… an invading army approaches. They are marching on the coliseum. They-- they have numbers enough to defeat us here."

Orm's eyebrows raised in shock and fury. "Who would dare?! Who could dare?!"

"They appear to be surfacers, my lord," the Captain spoke, head bowed in supplication. "And are almost entirely… women, sir."

"Athena's #####s," Orm spat. "Come to save their pet. Clear out the civilians. Align the guard and call in the army. We shall show them how Atlanteans make war."

"Sir - we have only a small contingent of the army on hand, and more won't be able to arrive until the battle is well underway."

"Then they shall be reinforcements to strike the enemy from the rear. We'll have them in a pincer strike and crush them like sand in an oyster. And after…" he smiled at this, "we shall see if there are any pearls among them to steal for our own."

Mine still come out fine when I click on my own link, but for some reason the link you've just posted above still throws things off a bit. I'm not using iPhone or anything like that, but I am using Safari, so if you're using a different browser I wouldn't argue against that having something to do with it.

Strangely (and somewhat frustratingly) I never noticed this kind of problem ever happening before the whole revamp of the map system (or whatever it is that happened that updated its look and all).

Wonder Woman's sword swung through the water. Orm parried with his trident. She was faster, stronger than him on land but here in Atlantis, the water slowed her movements whereas Orm's own attacks were strengthened. The two to crossed blades again and again, both drawing blood. Atlanteans and Amazons alike tried to assist their leaders but were cut down by the two more experienced warriors. Wonder Woman wouldn't let anyone stop her from defeating this madman. Orin's life depended on it.

The Amazons held the line against the Atlantean army as the Titans used their abilities to pick off the soldiers one by one. Starfire flew through the water, blasting a rifle bearing soldier with a starbolt, sending him crashing through the palace wall. Beast Boy became a giant octopus and snatched one of the guards, giving Tempest a chance to knock him out with a super strong punch to the jaw.

Well behind the line, Arsenal took careful aim at one of the soldiers and fired off a shot. His hand shook and the shot went wide.

"You okay there, red?" Terra asked, swimming up to him.

"I'm fine. Just a bit distracted."

"Scared?"

"Not even a little bit" he lied.

"Yeah, me neither" the girl replied sarcastically. "S'cool though. I won't tell the others if you don't."

"Deal." He raised his rifle again, trying to keep his aim steady as he searched for a target.

Garth brought his fists down on Orm's body, superheating his knuckles to the point that the water boiled around them. Orm's armor popped and cracked under the burning assault. With a thought and the focus of his will, the heat from Garth's fists turned to freezing cold. One hard strike to the chest and his deep-zero freezing palm met the super-heated metal of Orm's armor. The chain reaction caused the metal to buckle and practically explode off the man's body.

Orm toppled back from the blast, black and red water swirling from his chest. He raised his arm, but his trident was gone. He looked to see where it had fallen, and screamed as his hand was suddenly pinned hard to the rocky ocean bed beneath him. Garth pushed on the trident and it embedded itself deep in the stone. Orm clutched at it with his other hand, desperately trying to break free, but Garth kicked his hand away and knelt over him. The man's body pinned beneath him and his arm trapped by the trident, Garth pulled Orm's head up by the neck of his armor and screamed in his face.

It wasn't even words, just a gutteral cry. This was one of the two men he looked to as fathers; the man who had trained him, helped raise him, who had given him his model for what a man should be and what all men should aspire to.

"Why?" he demanded, overwhelmed with emotion and struggling to find a way to understand what he'd watched here - how his mentor had brought his people to war, betrayed his own brother, turned on everything they had once held dear…

"F-for… Atlantis," Orm rasped. "For our future. Our children."

Garth wanted to scream again. To shout at this madman and ask how he could possibly think war with the surface, the death of Aquaman - how could any of that make Atlantis' future brighter?

"What future are you trying to build?" he shouted, his voice coming out in a gutteral growl as he strained with a throat already raw and pained. "You're only bringing more death! More suffering! How many more would you kill to get your way?"

"To ensure Atlantean dominance of our world?" Orm asked, all resistance leaving him as he resigned himself to the death he knew awaited him. "To protect us forever from the curse of the air-breathers? From their greed and their ignorance and their hate?

"I would kill as many as it takes. Without remorse… without regret."

Garth felt the tears floating from his eyes, joining the waters of the ocean around him. He could feel the tightness in his chest tearing at him. His heart pounded and adrenaline roared through him, making it almost impossible to stay still, holding this man by his collar and struggling to see the father figure he'd loved in those cold, hardened eyes. His ears throbbed, his throat clutched as though he'd swallowed an apple whole, and no matter how hard he tried he could not make any words come.

He screamed, rearing his head back as the water boiled around him. He raised his right fist up and reared back. Light whipped around it in arcane patterns, setting fire to the water. Salt particles burst and cracked like sparklers as the burning intensified. He didn't stop screaming, feeling like a raging animal was clawing its way out from inside himself.

Orm let his head lean back and closed his eyes. He was ready. In a way, he'd always expected this would come. But in death, he would become even more powerful a symbol to his people than he had been in life. And in the back of his head, he accepted the truth of the voice in him that told him this was, after all, what he deserved. For his brother, for his mother, so long dead after suffering so long in life, for all those who died by his hand that didn't deserve it, and even for those who did. The scales would finally be set even.

The burning fist came down with the fury of a tempest. It struck like a thunderclap, like a sonic boom ripping through gale winds, like the weight of justice and vengeance. The water burst around them, rock and dirt thrown up by the impact, and in the silence that followed a cloud of sediment drifted slowly down like blackened snow and ash.

Orm opened his eyes with slow, dawning comprehension. He turned his head and saw where Garth's fist was still embedded in the rock next to his head.

"Garth," a voice spoke. "Stand down."

Both men looked to its source with surprise. At some point the two had become surrounded by Amazonian warriors and Titans. The battle had ended, and those still standing had watched the final moments between Orm and Garth in silence, not knowing how to intervene, nor if they should. They kept their distance, a wide circle around the men, until it was broken by slow, pained footsteps.

Aquaman stepped into the circle. His body, lacerated and cracked, was supported by Wonder Woman who walked beside him and held his arm around her neck. His face was sunken and deathly pale, his hair long and grunged, drifting lifelessly in the water. A beard hung from his strong jaw, disguising his regal features and making him look more pauper than king. But his eyes - in those eyes was the same intensity, the same power as ever there was.

"Stand down, son," he said, raising a hand. He pulled his arm from Wonder Woman and she looked at him with concern, but he nodded at her. He had to do this himself.

He took his first steps on his own in months, and felt his muscles burning and screaming. It was tortuous, but he didn't make a sound; wouldn't even let himself wince. He straightened his body and rolled back his shoulders and for the first time Aquaman was back.

He walked to where Garth was still kneeling over Orm, and extended a hand to the young man he had mentored for so many years. Garth took it and stood, and they looked at each other a long moment before Orin pulled him in hard for a hug. Garth could feel his body shaking slightly and knew that the king wept for him. A display of such emotion from a man who had always been so emotionally distant…

"I am so glad to see you," Orin said, pulling back and gripping his shoulders to get a better look at him. "I thought you were dead…"

"You don't look so good yourself," Garth smiled. Orin smiled back, and there was nothing hidden in his expression. He was happy, genuinely and visibly happy. Then a shadow passed over him and he turned from Garth to regard his fallen brother on the floor.

"Brother," he frowned, standing over him and staring down. "Why…"

"You know why," Orm said through gritted teeth.

"No," he shook his head. "Why is it that… I can't hate you. Everything you've done--everything you meant to do--and I look on you now, beaten, and… I can't hate you."

"It will make what you have to do more difficulty," Orm narrowed his eyes, looking away and laying back on the floor in defeat.

"I won't kill you. I won't allow it. Things have to change, Orm, and neither of our deaths will make that happen."

"What… will you do?"

"I have three final acts as King of Atlantis, brother," he said, kneeling down next to him. "The first two I declare here and now, with all these witnesses here to observe them. First, Orm, I grant pardon to every soldier and citizen who followed you. Nobody who fought here today or during any act that led us here will be punished. For Atlantis to stand, we have to be healed. To be healed, we have to forgive."

He looked around, on his knees, at the Atlantean soldiers who were even now being cuffed by the Amazons who fought for his life.

"I forgive you," he said. "Let them go - let all of them go. They're free to live their lives and put this behind us."

"And your second act?" Orm asked.

"You are banished, my brother," he said, putting a hand on the man's shoulder. "You can never again live on Atlantean soil, seek any office, or hold any position within our kingdom. It will be known across the globe that Orm Marius is a poison that is no longer welcome. I love you, brother, but I see what you have become even if you do not. Much as I wish we could come to an accord, I know that isn't possible. I won't heal the wounds of our home just to have them fester and reopen again the first time I turn my back."

"And the third," he asked, dejectedly, his head laying on the ground and looking away.

"When I return to the palace, I'll announce it from there. Now isn't the time. But for you, brother… I'll let you know now how you've changed the shape of Atlantis forever."

He leaned down and whispered in the man's ear, and Orm's eyes closed as he wept.

"You--you--" Vulko struggled to find words. "Y-you-- abdicated the throne?!"

"No, Vulko - I did much more than that," Orin said as he sat in a simple chair that nonetheless felt like the most comfortable piece of furniture he had ever experienced. He'd bathed, shaved, cut his hair and redressed, and for the first time in days was looking like himself again.

"What I've done is abolish the monarchy forever. There will never again be a king in Atlantis."

"B-but--but how?! Why? There has been a king presiding from the throne of Atlantis since the dawn of our culture!"

"And culture has to change," Orin smiled. His calm, peaceful repose was completely unnerving to the elderly, rotund advisor on whom he had relied for so many years. "The monarchy is an archaic, unjust, and frankly dangerous system of governance. Most civilized nations of the surface did away with them long ago. We already have a parliament of representatives - let the people decide their own future."

"But-- as king, you presided over an era of peace and reunification of--"

"Yes, I reunified - after my mother's husband nearly destroyed the world. My brother would have been able to bring about a war on a scale that nobody has ever seen, and nobody could stop him because he wore an old trinket on his head. Every king is a tyrant, even the 'good' ones. And Orm… Orm never would have done what he did if the crown wasn't on the line. He couldn't have even if he'd wanted to."

"But with a good man as king…"

"Even the best kings only bring prosperity to the few," Orin stood and put a hand on the frazzled Vulko's shoulder, squeezing it fondly as he smiled at the old man. "Monarchy by definition is a system of inequity, and we should be judged by how well we treat the poorest of our people. By that metric, the concept of monarchy is an abysmal failure at best, and deeply corrupt and evil at worst. It deserves to die."

This time it was Vulko who settled with exhaustion into the chair. He rested an elbow on the table and held his head in his hand.

"This is… it's all so…"

"Terrifying," Orin laughed. Vulko looked up with surprise. He rubbed his eyes and looked again. He hadn't seen Orin laugh since… he couldn't remember when.

"Yes… terrifying," he swallowed. "And yet, perhaps you are right. Perhaps it is time. We've been giving more and more powers to the parliament anyway."

"It's time," Orin said, shedding his robe and pulling a shirt on. "But they'll need a leader to help in the transition."

"But won't you be--?"

"No," he shook his head, fastening his belt. "My name has already been ruined in this damned kingdom, Orm saw to that. It would take too much work to get them to trust me again. Instead, let them believe they've exorcised the spirits of the cursed half-brothers of Marion. Let them feel like they've won this for themselves, and that it's on their shoulders to make it strong and good."

"So, then, who…?"

"I thought that would be obvious," he smiled, looking at Vulko for a long moment before the old man started sputtering and coughing. Orin laughed. "And why shouldn't it be you? You taught me everything I know about ruling and what real leadership is. You're the most brilliant man I know, and you have all the skills and the knowledge of history necessary to manage this transition."

"I didn't teach you everything," Vulko shrugged as the two embraced, almost like father and son, and each was proud of the similarity. "You already had that stubborn sense of righteousness when you showed up here, just a naked pup raised by dolphins and salty surface-men."

"And I respected you from the start because you were just the same," Orin smiled. "Now, if you'll excuse me, there's somebody I have to see."

Diana waited in a receiving room in the palace. She'd been here for days, but hadn't seen Orin since the doctors had whisked him away when they first arrived. She'd gotten some medical care of her own, but hadn't needed much. Still, she'd refused to leave until she saw him again. She had to know he was alright. Something in the last look he'd given her when they took him away…

"Diana," a voice said, and she turned to see him standing in the door. He still looked thin and slightly drawn, but when their eyes met he smiled. It felt like the first time she'd seen her friend in years. The light was in his eyes again, and as she smiled with him his own broadened.

Her heart caught in her throat and she suddenly felt ready to cry. She covered her mouth with her hand as she laughed a little and wept a little.

He didn't say a word, he just started walking toward her. She couldn't control her legs, they walked forward in a rush quite against her wishes. And in an instant, they met and embraced and he was kissing her and holding her with more strength than he looked capable of at that moment. Her eyes closed and she wrapped her arms around his neck and lost herself in the taste of him, the smell of him, the feel of him. And she did cry, and so did he, but they couldn't stop kissing each other if they'd wanted to. Neither of them wanted to.

After a moment that felt like eternity and yet also like the blink of an eye, they pulled apart and she felt numb happiness spreading from her lips to every part of her. The flutter in her heart had never been so strong.

"Hi," he said, smiling a shy grin that was downright boyish and so completely disarming that she laughed out loud. He started laughing with her, and kissed again. He pressed his cheek to hers as their hands held each other tightly, almost like they were afraid this moment could end at any moment.

"I love you," he said. She pulled away and looked at him, and saw the pain had gone from his face. She smiled, swallowing the tightness in her throat.

"It's about time," she smirked, then couldn't hold the moment and broke out laughing again.

They held each other like that for a long, long time. Nothing more needed to be said.

Garth and Tula swam north of the city. They used to spend their afternoons here, playing tag among the reefs. As the two got older, they moved on to making out, and then…

The Amazon’s assault on the palace had destroyed the entire area. Construction teams had already begun repairing the little damage to the city, but coral took longer to regrow. Tula looked sad. Garth understood how she felt. After all, this place meant a lot to him too, just not as much as the woman he had shared it with.

“So, thanks for saving the day and everything," she said halfheartedly. “You’re a big hero now.”

“I don’t know about that. A lot of people think Orm was right.”

“Not as many, anymore. You have a lot to do with that. Everybody knows how close you and Prince Orm were, and you stood him down. Then you stood next to King Orin when he declared an end to the monarchy and gave all power to the parliament… A lot of people fell in love with him all over again, and everybody is calling you 'The Hero of the People.' So, good job.”

Garth swam up next to his girlfriend and put his arms around her waist.

“Why do I feel like you’re not happy, then? What can I do to cheer you up?”

Tula sighed and gently broke away from his embrace.

“I don’t want to do this anymore.”

“Do what anymore?”

“See you.”

“Tula…" he reached out to her but she put up her hand, stopping him.

“You died, Garth.”

“I know that’s what everyone thought but I-“

“You don’t understand. We buried you. I mourned you. But you weren’t dead. You were practicing with your stupid ice vision and your stupid water control and all these new powers, practicing so you could be this big hero and save the world.”

“Tula, I wanted to see you but my destiny-“

“Screw destiny! What about your friends? What about us? You left me all alone for five years, Garth." Her hands came up to her arms and she held herself. Garth again felt the need to comfort her, to hold her, but she wasn’t going to let him. “I cried myself to sleep every night for weeks. Sometimes little things would remind me of you and I’d just break down. All that time you were training, perfectly content to come back to me eventually. And when you finally did come back, you went rushing off to play hero with the rest of the Titans. Did it ever occur to you that I wanted you here with me? Did you even think to speak with the king when you came back? You learned about what Orm had done from an Amazon! You’re so busy out there trying to save the day that you don’t even stop to think about what you’re saving it for.”

“I’m doing it for you." Before he could continue, she shoved him backwards.

“Don’t you dare," she said through gritted teeth.

“I’m doing it for us," he pleaded. “I’m doing it so that one day our children can live in a better world than the one we grew up in.”

“We’re not going to have children, Garth.”

“Don’t say that! I don’t have to do this anymore," he whispered, reaching out to her and holding her tightly. “Don’t you see? I saved Donna. She invited the Titans to come with her. We barely won today and without the Titans, we’d have lost, Orm would be in control and there’d be war with the surface world. I saved Atlantis. I saved everybody. I don’t have to be a Titan anymore, Tula. I can stay here with you.”

“It won’t be the last time. There's always going to be another mission, another crisis. You’ll always go with them because you’ll never be able to forgive yourself if you didn't and they failed.”

She was right of course. He didn’t have anything to say against that so he said the only thing he could.

“I love you.”

She flinched, almost like it caused her physical pain to hear those words from him.

“I love you too." She gave him one last kiss, fighting hard to hold back her tears. “Be careful out there.”

Garth watched as she swam away. This is the part where Aquaman would scream out, refuse to be defeated. Aquaman would storm the gates of hell itself to get his way… but that was not who Garth was. Dignity and grace at all times, even during the greatest victories and most terrible defeats. That’s what Orm had taught him. Even after everything that had happened, that example was still worth living up to.

“Dude, that was pretty harsh," a nearby flounder told him.

Garth sighed and swam back towards the palace.

The Titans took one of the Amazon ships for the journey home. Gar, Tara and Vic chatted it up as usual. Dick and Roy sat with Donna as she piloted their ride, reminiscing about old times. Hank and Kory sat together, discussing the battle and the tactics that had lead to their victory while Dawn listened in horror, her hands balled into fists in front of her mouth. Garth had wandered off from his old teammates.

None of today felt real. He had woken up entirely sure of his place in the world. He was Tempest, hero of Atlantis. He had his friends, he had his mentors in Orin and Orm and he had his girlfriend Tula, who he was sure to marry someday. It was so natural, so…cool. Everything was set up right. All he had to do was keep doing what he had been doing and everything would work out. Now, most of that was gone and the only thing that felt natural about it was the feeling of being the Titan who had his act together the least.

How could this have happened? It was like so much of his life had slipped away when he wasn’t looking. His heart felt like a half-ton weight in his chest and it was all he could do to keep himself together in front of the others. Maybe he should have just swam back on his own.

“It gets better," Raven said, causing Garth to damn near jump with surprise.

“Oh sorry, Raven. You startled me. What was that again?”

“The pain. It gets better." Garth took a deep breath, knowing it was probably pointless to try to hide his feelings from the empath. “I mean, I haven’t experienced it for myself but I’ve felt it from others. It takes awhile when you care about someone as much as you cared about her, but I promise it will get better. That’s all I wanted to say. I’ll mind my own business now." She turned to leave.

“You don’t have to go if you don’t want to.”

“Oh. Okay." The girl managed a half smile, probably the first Garth had seen from her. “Do…you want to talk about it?”

“No," Garth decided. “Why don’t we talk about something else?”

The Amazon ship broke through the surface a stone throw’s distance from Titans Tower.

As the Titans prepared to leave the ship, Nightwing told the team that Donna had an announcement to make. Donna stepped forward, nervously. She was normally full of confidence when speaking in front of others but she couldn’t be like that around these Titans. They had seen her at her very worst, as a crazy drugged up killer. How could she stand in front of them and project an aura of calmness? She moved the hair out of her face, taking the extra second to mentally prepare herself.

“Go on," Roy told her, tapping her butt with the barrel of his rifle. She gasped, not that it was really surprising coming from Roy, but at this point, she felt like a strong breeze could tip her over. She put on her biggest smile, hoping the others didn’t see right through it.

“I’ve spoken with my old teammates and they’ve convinced me to rejoin the Titans. I know most of you don’t know me that well, and I know several of you… well, I don't have the best track record. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what happened, trying to get my life together - trying to become myself again. My real self, the person I want to be. I promise to do my best to make up for those mistakes and I look forward to the chance to prove myself to you. And to me.”

Dove grinned brightly and Tempest smiled at her. Terra didn’t seem to care much one way or the other. Surprisingly, Raven didn’t seem to mind, either. Perhaps her empathy told her that Donna truly believed her words. The others were clearly not as happy. Hawk seemed conflicted while Beast Boy and Cyborg exchanged half worried, half angry glances. Starfire put forth a large scowl.

“This is foolish," the alien told her. “We know what you did, Donna Troy. You are not a hero. You are a traitor, a deceiver, a… a murderer! And if you were a better fighter, there would be no Titans. We should not welcome you into the home you tried to destroy. If you are lying to us now," she looked into Donna’s eyes unblinkingly. Donna felt a strong urge to turn away, run away even, rather than stand a moment longer under Starfire’s gaze. “Know that I will kill you myself.”

With that, Starfire shot into the air towards the tower.

“She’s right," Cyborg said, shaking his head. “If you really want to redeem yourself, fine, take your best shot. It ain’t my place to deny you that. But you shouldn’t do it here, not after what you did.”

“She doesn’t have a thing to prove to you!" Nightwing shouted, half at Cyborg and half at his lover, long out of earshot.

“Maybe she doesn’t to you, but until a few hours ago, my only memories of this chick is her trying to kill me. Sorry if the rest of us don’t break out the champagne bottles for her comeback party." Beast Boy turned into a pterodactyl, grabbed his friend by the shoulders. He gave Donna a look that told her that what Cyborg had said went for him too before following Starfire.

“Classic," Terra said with a smirk, stepping off the ship and onto a hovering chunk of rock.

“Did I miss something?" Dove asked Hawk as the pair of them headed out. “What did she do that everyone’s so mad about?”

Donna collapsed into one of the seats. She felt Dick's hand on her shoulder.

“We want you here, Donna. You don't have to worry about what the others think. They can’t kick you off this team…but if you wanted to do this without the Titans for awhile, we’d understand.”

“No." She grabbed Nightwing’s hand tightly. “I need to do this here. I need you guys with me and I need to prove to them I’m better than I was. I need to show them that I’m worthy of their trust. Maybe when I can get them to believe in me…I’ll believe in myself."

She took a deep breath, trying to keep her composure. "I want this so badly I can hardly stand it. I need you to help me, though. I can’t just do this alone.”

“Then you won’t have to," Roy grabbed her other hand and helped her back up. “We’ll do this together.”
