Emerald Knights - every Tuesday at 7pm
4116 West Burbank Boulevard., Burbank, CA

05/21: Teen Titans Sealed (& Anything Goes)
On Tuesday we'll be running an (optional) Teen Titans Sealed tournament! Each player will purchase two boosters from EK and from those build a 300 point team. Winners will have first shot at items from the Teen Titans OP kit.

For those who do not want to participate in the Sealed, bring a 300 point Constructed team of your choice - anything goes with the following restrictions:

-ATAs, 2x2 colossals, vehicles, and theme team bonuses are in play
-One special object or resource per team
-No Feats, BFCs, or bystanders
-Common Sense Highlander Rule is in effect

Emerald Knights House Rules
The goal is to have fun and casual games of HeroClix that are accessible to new and returning players.

Unless otherwise announced, the following will apply:
-Friendly tournament style – three 45 minute games. Voting will determine fellowship based on sportsmanship and team building - all prizes are based on fellowship.
-When possible the venue or participating players will provide prize support. This means that there won’t be prizes every week, so don’t expect them.
-Each week we will choose at random a participant to determine the scenario (rules) for the following week’s game. These rules will then be emailed to all participants and available at Emerald Knights.
-Cost per player is $2.
-Subject to the scenario choices, the “standard” tournament will be:

300 point teams with three actions per round
all standard-sized, duo, and giant figures are legal, including Golden Age, Modern Age, and promos. All universes are legal: Marvel, DC (including Watchmen), and Indy (including Street Fighter, Gears of War, Invincible, B.P.R.D., etc.). Also, "ship" = "character."
“Common Sense Highlander Rule” – you may only have one figure of a given specific character on your team. This means only one version of Earth-616 Scott Summers (aka Cyclops), but he can fight alongside alternate versions of the character such as Ultimate X-Men Cyclops and Age of Apocalypse Cyclops. A “character” is defined by his true identity, so you can only play one Dick Grayson whether he’s Robin, Nightwing, or Batman. Generic/minion figures are obvious exceptions to this rule. When in doubt, check with Scott or Jason.
ATAs are allowed
no colossals or vehicles
no Feats, Bystanders, or Battlefield Conditions
no theme team benefits
special objects are legal (maximum of one per player), but resources are not
map choice is determined as usual (roll for it). The map selection at the store is limited, so players are encouraged to bring their own.
Print and Play is in full effect, just don’t overdo it. You can print a card, but you must have at least the figure’s actual base to play it.

There was a fair amount of interest via word of mouth and phone calls to the store, but when it came time to play only a couple people showed up. We'll be there again next week and see if we can't drum up more excitement! :classic:

I was here tonight! It was fun. I was the guy with the killbox team. I totes did not realize that it was going to be more laid back and friendly; I solemnly promise to not field Nightcrawler anymore in friendly games.

Yeah, last night was great! We had some repeat customers, some new faces, and even a store employee playing for the first time. Not only that, but several other store regulars were watching and confessed to be former HeroClix players. Hopefully we can get them back into the game too!

No harm done with Nightcrawler. Everyone should be able to try out a crazy piece once in a while! :classic:

Tuesday night games will continue as planned, and there will also be a GSX event on Sunday, March 20th.

Great job helping make the game grow. Are the Tuesday nights tournaments with prizes or just casual games?

sphin
03/02/2011, 18:32
Right now we're starting off friendly and casual, especially to bring in new players or those who have been out of the game for a while. Starting with GSX the venue is looking to promote the game more fully, which hopefully will mean prize support.

Other than that we may have some nights when we'll do a sealed tournament or pitch in for a store credit prize, etc., but those will be announced ahead of time.

Question! Jason said I could pick the rules for next week's game, so I was wondering what that entails. Do I just get to decide team build point value and era, or can I come up with some silly scenario? I was thinking of doing something involving the incipient St. Patrick's Day, i.e. requiring green powers and/or characters notorious for being drunkards.

sphin
03/03/2011, 02:02
The sky's the limit with crazy scenarios! Just try to make it objective or flexible enough so that the guys who aren't comic book experts or who don't have massive collections will be able to play too.

Actually, if you can come up with your scenario and let me know (here or via pm) by tomorrow afternoon, that would be great so I can let some of the other guys know at the Thursday game. Thanks!

miracleman83
03/07/2011, 21:35
Oh! Sorry, I sent it as a PM to sphin, but I guess I forgot to post it here. Anyway! Tomorrow's game is going to be a 300 point Golden Age game, St. Patrick's Day themed, with the following caveats: All characters must have a green/light green power showing somewhere on their dial (it doesn't need to run the whole length of it, as long as there's some green somewhere), and in honor of St. Patrick's Day, everybody's favorite excuse for drinking during the work week, the bucket of water item will modify the attack value by -1 and damage value by (an additional) +1 for whomever occupies its square/carries it!

Just putting up a post here, reminding everybody that tomorrow we're taking on Dark Phoenix! 300 points Modern Age, Marvel only, no BFCs/feats/ATAs, no theme team bonuses, all characters must have worked together at some point in a comic storyline, whether that be a temporary team-up or a more established roster, and I think Jason said that Jean will be able to take an action after every round, to sort of compensate for her getting grossly out-actioned, unless he changed his mind.

Tonight's games went pretty well! We had enough players to face off against two Jeans, and each Jean emerged victorious. The first match, with the Jeans taking actions after every turn, was a bit of a curb stomp battle; they destroyed the X-Men, Brotherhood, X-Force, Avengers and Maximum Carnage-era Spider-man allies with ease. The second match was a bit more even, although nowhere near close. I believe Noh-varr and his myriad host of powers was the Dark Avengers' MVP, with a surprise Juggernaut and (reduced) crit earning that title for the Brotherhood. Jean still plays surprisingly well for a colossal of her age, and it was a lot of fun for all involved. Next week, a buddy of mine is coming up with the format, so I'll pass it on as soon as he comes to a decision.

Oh, and just a reminder -- EK will be doing a GSX sealed event on Sunday! Team building starts at 1. Hope to see you there!

The format for Tuesday March 22nd at 7:00PM is:

The Rescue Mission on the Living Island
-400 pts
-DC or Marvel
-Your team must share a non-generic keyword
-No feats, no BFCs, no bystander tokens
-Highlander Rule
-The winner must have defeated the opponent or saved the captive

The matches will take place using the new Krakoa map. In addition, the Krakoa the Living Island BFC will be in effect. For a description on both the map and the BFC check this link: http://wizkidsgames.com/blog/2011/03/11/islands-of-adventure/

Now comes the rescue part. Leech is held captive in the center of the map. His trait is in effect. He cannot be KOed. In order to free him, you must make a successful close combat attack against Krakoa. Krakoa has a defense value of 18. After a successful close combat attack, Leech is automatically carried by the attacker and the carrier's movement ends for that turn. Leech halves the carrier's speed value. The carrier drops Leech in an adjacent square when targeted by a successful attack. If the attack was close combat, the new attacker carries Leech.

Saving Leech requires bringing him to your starting area. This results in an automatic win.

This is Andy btw.

I just wanted to clarify something, since Andy and I were talking about it tonight: if somebody rolls a 5 for Krakoa's special map roll, and the character carrying Leech occupies hindering terrain, then Leech is dropped into a square adjacent to the one occupied by his carrier before he/she/it was moved to his/her/its owner's starting area.

I was thinking of him, but felt he was a little soft offensively. Went with:

Flash/GL Duo
Max Mercury (for tie-up and +3 perplex to movement)
Kid Flash (Crisis)
Bart Allen (75)
= 400pts

Some interesting takes on teams at this venue, it was fun, casual play. Appreciated no theme bonuses, just straight out play.

Thanks to all last night. Had fun...

One suggestion to throw out there with regards to fellowship - and feel free to disregard it if nobody likes it.

Voting for fellowship is always a bit awkward, I think, especially when everybody is as nice and cool and fun as they were last night. Most other venues I play, with cool people that all get along together, just have a roll-off to see who wins that week, since everybody's pretty well accepted as on the same level of good sportsmanship.

Of course, the judge always has the right to exclude someone from a fellowship roll-off if they're being a total jerkface or something, but that's not something that happens often in my experience (and even in really tight games when things are tense, if someone gets a little snappy in the heat of things, he'll usually be the first to say 'oh, I don't get fellowship this week, I'm too tense' or something like that).

I'm fully prepared to be excluded for swearing too much, too. I have a potty mouth that I must learn to control. ;)

Anyway, just a thought. Do with it what you will.

I personally like the roll-off. The most egalitarian of solutions...

I personally like the roll-off. The most egalitarian of solutions...
And, I've started to do roll-offs as well at my tournaments... that way, there's no voting for friends, no way to corrupt the system, no awkward feeling of not voting for a friend, etc.

Like turdburglar said, the judge has the right to exclude people... maybe give them a warning if they are being a jerk and if they continue... technical foul! you're excluded from fellowship.

turdburglar47
03/23/2011, 20:54
Also, since most of the venues I play are generally comic-theme-geared, the judge grants bonuses to your fellowship role depending on how themey your theme team was.

Then again, there was considerable vocal antipathy towards the theme team rules. Admittedly, they can be a bit awkward (and I'd be fine with doing away with generic theme teams), but I do like getting a helping hand when facing a min/max team.

Not that any of y'all play that way - I've only been there once, after all. Just spitballing/brainstorming.

300 Points or Bust

After some crazy scenarios we're going to have a "traditional" 300 point/3 action game this Tuesday. All of the standard Emerald Knights house rules are in effect with the following adjustments:

-ATAs and Bystander Tokens are legal
-no special objects
-no theme bonuses
-Common Sense Highlander rule is in effect (which still allows the use of multiple generics/ minions)

For the sake of the game, let's try to focus on fun teams; leave the cheese at home.

Optional: for a little diversity my team will include at least one GSX figure and at least one non-Marvel figure. You can try it too!

DucksFlying81
03/28/2011, 00:12
Can you post what your "standard house rules" are, please?

Also, it might be a little easier if the first post of this thread was edited to say when the regular events are held and what the house rules are. You could edit the first post each time the build rules are announced for the upcoming tournament, and bump the thread. Just seems to be a common and convenient way of managing these things.

Hope to see you guys on Tuesday.

Hmm, that's a tough one. While I like the new rules, technically they're not actually out yet. The articles on heroclix.com are previews, but WizKids has not yet released the new rule book (which may end up being different to some extent too). So, we should probably stick with the old... though I suppose we could let the players vote on Sunday and if it's unanimous we could "house rule" the new guidelines.

What does everyone think?

just my two cents:

I've shied away from using the new rules at mine but since the upcoming one is on Colossals, I decided to use ONLY the new rules for Colossals and Giants.

Why? Because the new rules make more sense and don't affect gameplay that much as opposed to the new rules regarding cancelling powers and wildcards. Nobody really used Colossals that much in the past so new rules regarding Colossals don't really affect anyone's gameplay.

Rules on Colossals and Giants are going to change for the better anyway, so why not start now rather than learning bad rules and then re-learning new ones in a few weeks or so.

This Sunday april 10th, we are doing a 600 point colossal chaos tournament. modern age 3 action, your team must include 1 GSX colossal. The entry is $10 but thats because for every 2 players we add a booster of GSX to the prize pool. When we finish we open the boosters and add the figs to the prize pool that will also have some LEs and then go down the tournament ranking and everyone gets to pick figs in the order they ranked.

The Colossal Chaos Tournament yesterday was pretty great. There was a whole lot of fun colossal-on-colossal action ranging from Apocalypse (x2) to Sentinels Mark V, Frost Giants, and even a Nemesis. The highlight for me was the second round when I took on miracleman83's Apocalypse and Horseman Wolverine with my Apocalypse and Starter Thing. The dice gods were entirely on my side, and after a "Worthy" trade I KOed his First Mutant with his own Horseman!

For those of you who didn't make it, you missed out on great prizes. There were LEs galore (from GSX through Hammer of Thor) as well as the contents of three GSX boosters. In the first round of prize selection our winner got an LE Archangel, second place an LE Deadpool, third place Cable/Deadpool, fourth The Captain, and so on. Also picked up were a couple Lanterns, Gems, and more.

nice! Congrats on a fun event. Who won first place?

I managed to pull off the win with an Asgardian team starring Loki and a 100 point Frost Giant. Sphin's Apocalypse failed to roll shape change even once during the final match, while I only missed about one or two attacks the entire game!

That was my first time at the venue, it was a pretty nice group of guys. The store is also HUGE.

Also, that is the first time I have won a tournament since before WoS came out, so, woot, go me.

Betrayed by his own Horseman! Oh, Apocalypse, truly you were not of the strong. Still, it was an awesome event, and I'm really glad I participated.

In sadder news, I still can't find the team I actually built for the tournament. This makes me all kinds of sad, because Noh-Varr is one of my favorite characters/clix. :( The pieces haven't shown up anywhere at the store, have they?

I've got an extra Noh-Varr if you want it. Actually, if I can make it to the tournament tomorrow, I'll bring my box of duplicates for any newer players that want to pick through them. They've already been picked through by other new players at other venues, but I've still got a fair amount.

Question re this week's tourney:

Do the teams need to meet the requirements of a non-generic theme team? Or do whatever figures I use merely have to share a non-generic keyword? For example, if I used three figures with the Avengers keyword, would that be legal? What if I just used Onslaught?

All figures on your team must share a non-generic keyword, but you do not have to meet the non-generic theme team requirements as there are no theme bonuses this week. You can use a single figure team if you'd like.

I had a great time though.

Unfortunately, I'm not always free on Tuesdays. I'll try to make it to one of the Sunday tournaments.

I tried to search on how to use Edward Nigma properly but couldn't really find anything. Maybe someone can make suggestions? Superman 1 - Prof X 0!

Professor X isn't cheese. He is incredibly fragile, and absolutely depends on his teammates in order to be successful. He's no Nightcrawler, and he's certainly no chase Superman.

If prof. X is cheese, then cosmic spiderman is the whole cheddar store.. Haha..

Prof. X definitely is a fun piece, and I totally agree that he relies on his teammates in a big way. I lucked out with a big hit on him last night.. Made him almost useless..

Personally, I think every figure is fun in its own way. No figure is really cheese to me, but some are definitely way easier to use than others.. Just my .02.

Incredibly fragile yet a cripple super sensed out of getting hit by not one but two object attacks...

Nightcrawler also depends on his teammates in order to win.

Chase sups is as close to cheese as you can get without being cheese IMO. Very outwitable, and as both you and David proved, VERY hittable.

Every figure has its ups and downs, some (Like Cosmic Spidey, X, Nightcrawler, and yes even Supes) have more ups than downs, and there are even some without downs.

Spectre and Green Lantern were taken out first, followed by the Black Lantern team. Then Mongul got Raptured (after a streak of *$%/ bad rolls), which left Doomsday+Darkseid and Superman Prime against Phoenix+Chuck. D&D went down swinging, and Prime got in one good hit before the end. Finale: both Prof. X and Jean stayed alive to take the title for Andy and the Marvel Universe.

Oh, and no one ever even tried to pick up Mjolnir!

Quite fun tonight. Missed a lot of attacks, but managed to KO Young Supes and Supergirl, so I'm happy!.

One thing to tag on to what Jason was saying about next weeks event is that the restriction could be as follows:
Each character must have 1 Villainous keyword, but each keyword may only be used once. Or at least that made sense on the ride home. But I think that was the jist of what we were trying to get at.

Anyway hope to see you all next week!

From Wikipedia:
"The League of Assassins is a group of fictional comic book villains, an organization of killers formerly led by Ra's al Ghul, an enemy of Batman in the DC Comics Universe."

Sounds Villainous to me. :)

sphin
06/19/2011, 21:42
Hey, I don't make the rules; I just distribute them.

The keyword list of "bad guys" is huge enough even without L-of-A. And the point was to make a team of villains pulled from different groups, so that rules out no-keyword figures (at least within the terms of the game).

Keep in mind that the more creative the build (which we encourage), the more care has to be put into the actual wording so people can make teams without too much fuss and the dreaded "what about this guy?" As the guy who has to field all questions and "what abouts," I will always err on making the rules as specific as possible.

or someone can let me borrow an 8 point or 6 point thug from infinity challenge. haha

Sorry, but everyone has to play within the same point limit. It's not always easy, but at least it's fair. Good luck finding a thug!

I'll be in Burbank but I have to leave at 8pm... can my daughter and I join the tournament for the first round only?

Absolutely! The more the merrier, and when people have to leave they leave; it's all good. :classic:

Would a team consisting of all flag-oriented characters (everyone sporting Red, White, and Blue like Uncle Sam, Cap, and Citizen V) be okay?

Only if each figure is primarily a different color. I'd accept Uncle Sam for white, but HA Thor and Citizen V are both pretty much blue. The idea is for each figure to be a different color rather than they all be flag-colored.

haha, you outdid yourself with the questions on this one Scott :D

And here I thought it was pretty straightforward. It's funny, but when putting together the rules you never really know what kinds of questions people are going to come up with!

Let's see...

It's fun to play sealed.
You might pull SRs or Chases that will be great trade fodder, especially since you don't care about any of them.
People will probably have stuff for trade, maybe even that special Gravity Feed guy you're looking for.

One minor clarification. When it's your turn the Symbiotes who used to be your team members act and when it's your opponent's turn his Symbiotes who used to be on his team act. When I said "all Symbiotes can act on every turn" I meant that there's no limit as to how many Symbiotes can act, not that "yours" can act on your opponent's turn. So, "your" Symbiotes on your turn, your opponent's on his. Again, they are still limited by action tokens as well.

Hope that makes sense!

So no theme team bonuses means no + to map roll, no theme team rerolls, no nuthin correct?

Another question, no special objects... I assume that means no special object replacements for normal objects in force construction or does that also affect characters that have special objects like Captain america and Scorpio from CAP set?

sphin

Correct! You're free to build a comic accurate team that shares keywords, but it does not give you any "theme team" benefits in the game.

Another question, no special objects... I assume that means no special object replacements for normal objects in force construction or does that also affect characters that have special objects like Captain america and Scorpio from CAP set?

It's the former; in your build you cannot include anything other than 2-D light and heavy objects with no special rules. Any figure that creates its own special object works normally.

One more question. Do you just roll once for symbiotic conversion at end of third turn or end of every turn after 3rd?

And then 2 things to confirm :

Symbiotes keep range stat?
Says symbiotes move and attack? Should that say they move to closest player figure OR attack it since they have no move or attack powers listed? or are they supposed to have a move and attack?

Sorry for all the questions, neat scenario just a few things unclear to me.

sphin
08/01/2011, 02:10
I've got a few more (and hopefully final) clarifications for Tuesday:

-Symbiote conversion happens just once per game at the end of the third round.

-Symbiotes replace their printed range value with 0.

-when a Symbiote acts it must attack an adjacent non-Symbiote figure (If more than one such figure is adjacent then choose from among those targets randomly: flip a coin, roll a die: 1-3 is figure A, 4-6 is figure B, etc.). If no target is adjacent, the Symbiote must move toward the closest non-Symbiote figure, choosing as above in the case of more than one target at the same distance. Symbiotes always push since they have Willpower.

-ignore the typo in the original writeup referring to Symbiotes going around Elevated terrain (they have Leap/Climb). The point is that moving to get toward one figure may mean the Symbiote is closer to a different target on its next turn.

-ONLY figures with the Armor or Robot keywords are immune to the Symbiote roll. Any actual "Symbiote" characters in play (Carnage, Venom, etc.) are subject to the roll and metamorphosis just like everyone else.

hey Scott, I'm glad I was able to make it. Congrats to Daniel for taking first. My game against him in the 2nd round was a lot of fun.

As he said, there were a lot of "lead" changes... first he took out my queen (Wonder Woman), and then I took out his queen (Iron Widow) on the very next turn thanks to lucking out with Black Widow getting to her Outwit click.

By the way, my BB Wonder Woman with the gem of Cyttorak (Wonder Jugs, I call her) was pretty brutal... charge/flurry with an object on Iron Widow. Of course the second hit was masterminded off but that was 12 clicks of damage dealt there.

That game also featured my GSX Domino getting a critical hit for 5 points of damage.

I did have a chance to take the lead but missed Daniel's Domino on my last turn. It wouldn't have mattered as Daniel would KO the Nurse and Darkstar on his last turn.

It was a fun game and Daniel is a good player.

Edit: Daniel said he and some buddies might be playing in my team tournament. Maybe you and Jay can team up with another friend and enter as well. It will certainly be fun. And, you can have two teams representing Emerald Knights :)

Hey wanted to make a point or two.

HSS - a few of the characters in SF have access to HSS so I don't think it's fair that if a MA character has access to a fair version of it, that they can't use it. (IE not Nightcrawler)

Outwit - The SF characters that are going to be used will have Damage reducers and most MA characters don't have the damage to deal with that.

Earthbound/Neutralized - This counters abilities, not just flight. Can this be changed to Non-SF TA characters cannot use the flight ability or transporter ability? Or was the point to counter flight, sharpshooter, AND indom?

Seems like a fun scenario, just wanted a few clarifications.

For the record there are only two non nightcrawler martial artists that have h.s.s.
(northstar and jean-paul beaubier).
I totally agree on outwit though.
Also, I'm not sure if it's intentional, but the earthbound rule makes Wos nightcrawler very very strong. ( As he is now effectively the only legal taxi in the game)

The scenario rules were very specifically chosen and worded, and will remain as posted. The thoughts behind them were more to level the playing field, and I don't think they make SF figures unbeatable. Also, there are tons of Martial Artists with B/C/F (and a bunch with CCE and even some with RCE), so the SF reducers shouldn't prove insurmountable.

Also, I'm not sure if it's intentional, but the earthbound rule makes Wos nightcrawler very very strong. ( As he is now effectively the only legal taxi in the game)
Don't forget about chase Chun-Li.

I think you guys are missing the point. The point is play street fighter characters because we purposely made all other characters suck.
I wouldn't put it quote that way. It's more about a level playing field with a slight edge to SF. We also carefully crafted the rules so that we wouldn't be seeing the same exact Martial Artist figures on every team without having to ban any of them outright.

But for those of us who don't have SF characters by choice or can't afford them, it's a huge handicap.
Some other local venues were running SF sealed events, so this game is actually much more non-SF fan friendly. :)

As to Nightcrawler he can't taxi. Earthbound says you can't use combat abilities, Carry is a combat ability, so personally I probably wouldn't take Nightcrawler as his teleport ability is totally nerfed (thank god).

I'd like to humbly suggest that the points earned by players be the only thing considered when determining winner and 2nd place (if you aren't giving fellowship the 2nd place prize).

The other 2 venue's I play at do it this way and at first I questioned it, but it works much better. The game is simply too easy to abuse and make for non-fun games when people get rewarded for "W"s as much or more than points.

Tonight as an example, my 1st opponent only engaged with 1/3 of their force, took out a single figure worth 2 more points than the figure I took out in retaliation and then runs away with the rest of his force until time expires. Playing the clock like this was a disqualifying offense in the old days, not sure if it still is, but in any case it's too hard to police fairly. The best thing to do is just remove the incentive for this style of play, reward more aggressive fast play, discourage turtling slow turn play and the best way so far that I've seen to do this, is totally discount "Wins" from the equation and go purely by who has the most total points at the end of the day. Total up points from all games essentially making all the games into one big game with one big W at the end for the person with the most points. Because the snipe and flee/turtle player will very rarely end up with the most points calculated this way, more people will have more fun games because people are encouraged to engage their opponents in battle, which is what the game is supposed to be about.

Anyway, that is my suggestion, and I think it would help make the atmosphere of play be more fun for everyone and it seems to work at other venues.

Otherwise was a good scenario and I enjoyed playing my other opponents.

masterprotoss, and my other opponents, James, and Chad thanks for the fun games.

In my round 1 game against masterprotoss, with both of our teams having a TK'er, we both got into the thick of things quickly. He did have a great team in GSX Psylocke, Akuma, and Deathstroke. Unfortunately, his dice rolls didn't help much otherwise, it would have been a closer game than it was.

In my round 2 game against Chad's DC75 Bane, WoS Deadpool, Shang-Chi, and Diana Prince LE, my Shang-Chi was extremely lucky making his defensive Super Sense rolls and surviving the game on his last click. Offensively though, my dice rolling was quite bad.

And finally, against James' dreaded team of M. Bison, HoT Cap, Vega, and AA Robin, I was actually afraid and worried. Extremely so, when my SI Iron Fist missed on each of his flurries + 2 PCs against Robin. And Robin is just the least of my worries... there's still Bison and his HSS, Outwit to worry about. I was thinking about that last play, where Iron Fist was TK'd and then flurried Bison. I guess it was a bit of misdirection because I moved Shang-Chi next to Bison and it looked like I was going to push to CCE next turn. That proved to be the small opening I needed as Iron Fist connected on both flurries, and Shang-Chi, gaining CCE back, pushed to KO Bison.

Great games and thanks again guys.

As for turtling tactics, I think playing with a shrinking map will eliminate that more effectively. In fact, I've been wanting to try that at my tournaments.

Edit:
my team consisted of:
Boon LE
SI Iron Fist
AV Shang-Chi
Dhalsim (PC and TK)
Cammy
Felicia Hardy

Sorry I couldn't make it last night.
as for the turtling problem.
I don't think that going on pure victory points is much better.
Pure victory points:
1. Rewards player who are matched with new players/players with builds weak to what you're playing. especially if a group of players are similarly skilled and there's one new player, whoever plays the new player gets a huge advantage.
2. encourages players to play without any mercy when they are playing a new player/player who's having a bad week. (this might not be a problem for you, but it's detrimental to the long term health of a game if new players have bad experiences). It also encourages players to pursue a very risky "all or nothing" style of play and team building.
3. Means that players can know who will win before the end of the night. (if a player steamrolls his first two rounds, you can get to situations where his opponent cannot win no matter how well he plays, or even worse, the player in 1st place by points just turtles in the last round because he knows he doesn't have to win, just not get tabled.)

(I come from 40k, and one of the reasons I find heroclix more fun is that pure victory points can really degrade the culture of play)

As for turtling if the house rule "a player cannot pass two turns in a row" isn't being used, that helps some. Shrinking maps could be effective.
Or you could do a "shot clock": if a player goes 4 turns without making an attack, he chooses and kills a character.

mandroid71
08/17/2011, 19:05
Good suggestions all. One comment on Shock the turtle. It is good, but hoses figures like Prof X and makes them unplayable. I also just don't like the artificiality to it, but that's just me.

Now, I will say, I had some of the same concerns about victory points only, and I will tell you from my experiences at the other 2 venues where I've played multiple times, none of those concerns becomes an issue. You basically have to do pretty well all 3 games to win, and steamrolling someone in one game just doesn't do it. And the last game is usually a decider no matter what has gone the previous 2 games, because even with steamrolls, you can't afford to get steamrolled by your 3rd opponent and get 0 points. Basically it usually appears that if you get steamrolled in any round, you are pretty much out of the running to win, because usually the guy that wins is the one that does at least decent in all 3 games, and maybe has 1 steamroll victory. Get wiped in any game and you probably won't win. But this is still way better than the current "lose and out" system because there are levels of losing that can still get you a win overall, and this keeps more people in the hunt for the win up until the last game. For example.

In the current system at EK if you lose your first game, even if you got 50% of your opponents force, you are out of the running generally for winning. That same loss would put you in pretty good stead for winning if you did really good your next two games. This is why now you have people leave after their first loss, because they figure there is no point hanging around for more games when they can't win (not my philosophy as I'm there to play, but I get it) and after all shouldn't the system allow the most people to be in the hunt for the longest, instead of the single elimination style games that you now have.

And points only for sure gets rid of turtling as a strategy, but doesn't necessarily make a recklessly aggressive team desirable either. Give your opponent 290 points while you gained 250 doesn't exactly help you. But it does give you enough of an incentive to realize you have to DO something to win, not just waste time and burn turns.

I'm just saying there is a reason other venues have switched to this method and why they have stuck with it, because its better than the old system. Now, that is not to say that there can't be a better system than this even, but so far the evidence clearly "points" to Points over Wins providing more fun games.

In any case, I'd recommend trying it, and see how people like it. :d-indomitable:

hclixinarcadia
08/17/2011, 19:52
Good point on how the shrinking map would render someone like Professor X useless... maybe I won't do that at my tournament.

Personally, it doesn't really bother me when people run away when ahead. It's frustrating sure but to me it is a valid strategy and I just have to make sure people don't get that first KO.

I do prefer the all-out slugfest.

masterprotoss23
08/17/2011, 20:52
Turtling itself doesn't bug me, but I agree with Mandroid that it kills the game if someone is doing it as a runaway tactic after KOing a few pieces. I used to run a venue that a lot of players would just KO a 5-12 pog and just run away for the rest of the game. That ended quickly. One of the players that did that regularly even when there wasn't prizing on the line was asked to leave, and the others got the point after that. I cared more about the newer players and the ones who are there to have fun than the ones who have everything and only play for prizes.

Anyway I think the point system would work, unless we all can come up with something that solves other problems instead. Non-Aggression penalties hurt support pieces so I wouldn't go with that. I agree that Shrinking maps hurts the playability of some pieces, but may need to happen in a situation where turtling becomes a main strategy.

In the end it's up to Scott and Jason, so when one of them sees this thread again, they can chime in on it.

an idea just came to mind regarding the shrinking map: the starting area moves up with it... same dimensions width-wise... then again, that may be tampering with the rules too much.

jayknight1472
08/18/2011, 21:18
From my own perspective, as one of the tournament organizers who saw the game in question in action, I can honestly say there was no foul play involved. The players were not stalling and when time was called after 45 minutes of play, one play decided to take a defensive stance. In every competitive game I play it is perfectly acceptable to play defensive when you need to. The most interesting thing is that the player who was accused of stalling was the one taking his turns faster the entire game, while the other player who also was taking in turns in a perfectly acceptable amount of time was playing more contemplative.

Also the player in question would have won that night anyway because he had the most points of anyone and he received very high fellowship ratings.

I think everyone needs to evaluate why they are playing the game. If its to have fun, then please keep playing. If its to win stupid LE figures, then please play somewhere else. i personally don't want to hear these arguments over stupid rules or see player's nights ruined by these arguments like I saw Tuesday. I hope you all can be adults and play nice and not succumb to pettiness, especially when so little is on the line. Remember the events we hold are casual heroclix events.

Well, if you really want to decrease the competitive nature of some people in the games, I suggest you remove the prize support as a motivation for winning. I for one came to play because I heard there was some casual gameplay to be had at EK. I was actually a bit surprised/disappointed to hear there was prize support being offered. A couple of options-

A) Give the prize support out randomly to people who stay for 3 games of play. (Roll off or random picking of their 'tourney' cards from out of a hat, etc..)

B) Give out prize support to the best sport and most comic accurate team of the night, can't win two weeks in a row.

C) Remove prize support all together.

D) Some combination of the above, or alternate methods, whatever.

If you really want to encourage a more casual play atmosphere, I'd think something like that will need to be done. Otherwise as long there is a 'prize' incentive for playing cutthroat you will always have at least a couple people playing for that motivation, even if you encourage people not to.

My two cents. (Which now makes 4 cents)

thebaronvk
08/22/2011, 02:50
Or you could have prize support for fellowship only and have fellowship (sportsmanship)
and fellowship (team comp) as two different categories.

I'm not sure there's a problem with the level of competitiveness at EK, myself. I think it's pretty casual (I haven't been going that long, but it seems like most of the time there's only a prize for first and a prize for fellowship).

People seem to have problems not with competitiveness but with "turtling" and while I'm not a big fan of turtling in the first 35-40 minutes of a round, I certainly understand trying to preserve a sizable lead when time is called.
(turtling being different of course from stalling, which I'm glad to have never seen at EK).

To respond to the rest of the thread:
If other people have done a victory points system, and if it's worked at other venues then I'd be happy to try it at EK.
My only experience with victory points comes from 40k, where it doesn't work so well, and tends to cause new players to get beaten really really badly (often so badly they don't play 40k at tournaments again).

My preference is for straight win loss (with ties beind decided by vp), just because I think it's more exciting to have the final match (which I think is often fun to watch) be as even as possible.

I know it's unlikely, but victory point allows for a situation where one player has a sizable (100+) pt lead and can just play pure defense the entire round. (or the unlikely, but still possible moment where a player says "and by killing that piece, I have gained more victory points than you could get if you kill the rest of my pieces, so I've already won. Do you want to keep playing?")

By the way, I think this week's scenario is awesome. I look forward to seeing how it plays out. (It's really hard to build teams without theme bonuses, because there's always too many options. )

May or may not be able to make it tonight, having some issues at my house right now that I need to take care of, if I don't make it have fun without me and someone play some OMACs for me!

Great scenario last week! Got to get me some of those street fighter maps, they are pretty cool.

Sphin check your messages here btw for next weeks scenario.

Scenario was fun.
Good games to everyone. (Had a lot fun with my "Dirk Anger runs weapon x" team. Imagining Dirk's screams of frustration whenever a character died or missed an attack was great.)
I also enjoyed the sf maps.
I think it'd be cool if street fighter maps remained legal to choose in regular scenarios.

They should be. I'd personally love to be able to use the maps whenever I feel a crappy game coming up :)

So just to confirm:
Gears of war and street fighter are not legal then?

They're legal unless a build specifically says they're not.

From the standard EK house rules:
All standard-sized, duo, and giant figures are legal, including Golden Age, Modern Age, and promos. All universes are legal: Marvel, DC (including Watchmen), and Indy (including Invincible, B.P.R.D., etc.)

Sorry. Saw modern age feats. Thought it also meant modern age sets.
My bad.

My bad.I think Scott meant feats from Modern Age sets... because as we all know there are no feats in Modern Age. Also, Modern Age is actually defined as DC and Marvel only. So, one must be careful when using the term Modern Age.

No problem. Correct, only feats from Modern Age sets, but any figures (with the couple exceptions as spelled out in the build).

Thanks for the fun games everyone! Had a blast, and was fun getting to see my old Crisis Black Adam get to do his Good bye lap around the map before he gets permanently retired when the new Superman set comes out.

Some mean teams, Quasar and his shield flunkies was fun. The Avengers heavy hitters team of Duo Warmachine/Iron man, Thor, and HoT Cap was pretty scary. Was cool to see Omni man make an appearance too.

Hope everyone had a good time, I had fun seeing figs fielded that you don't get to see that often.

The Quasar team was interesting to run: It's probably the only time a 109 pt Nick Fury can be called a flunky.
Had lot's of fun. Was a really good scenario. It was great seeing really epic figures (Black Adam, Juggernaut, the 300pt Frost giant) just slug it out. The highpoints for me were Mandroid's single turn turnaround at time (when time was called he was down by 25 pts, and when the match was over he won by over 200), and the 10 turn slugfest between all of shield and that frost giant (so epic).

Anyway, hope to see everyone next week.
If anyone has any questions about next week's build, you can pm me.

Also, has everyone else seen this:

Any desire for a trial at EK sometime?
I think Organizer (Sphin?) would have to contact them.

Yeah those were all fun games. Black Adam did start tossing those shield agents around like rag dolls at the end of that game to pull it out for me, finally finding his way to the real nick fury and not one of those robots! ;)

And green lantern running back to the doctor with his tail between his legs after the wall in front of him disintegrated with a thunderbolt and then getting a face full of machine-gun bullets from war machine was very memorable.

Anywhoo, where is the build rules for next week bud? I remember most of it but don't want to have forgotten something. :knockedou

Looks like a fun game!

One suggestion though, I think the object is too easy to move, TK and hypersonic teams can end the game on turn 2 unless I misunderstand something. Maybe make the object not TKable and make it require a power action to pick it up? Just an idea.

I'll come to have some fun either way!

hmm ya, ur right. we put int he only one tk per turn rule. BUT, i forgot about tk + hypersonic.

couple easy fixes perhaps:

the object can't be picked up on either players' first move (could make it too).
of as mandroid suggest: u must be given a power action to pick it up.

Is there going to be anyone there not running a green lantern team with a spare "guardian of the universe" I could borrow for the evening?
(I only have one, and don't really have a use for duplicates of other figure in the fast forces pack).

(Alternatively, I'd be happy to trade a CA Human torch for one if anybody is interested.)
