View Full Version : Where to begin?

It's starting to look like Dresden Files is a non-starter (for now at least).
However, I am still interested in trying to mod and write a game. So I'm posing this question to the community: What theme would you like to see me run?
I have a few ideas listed below. Some were done before (at least one year ago) and others haven't been touched. Let me know what you'd like to see done or if you'd like me to even mod a game. Any and all feedback is welcome. Thank you.
Idea List:
- Walking Dead (probably based on the first two volumes)
- Noir (James Ellroy, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler)
- Sandman
- Preacher
- More to come...?

Well theme is usually an issue...things that hit really well Marvel or DC themes of some sort, movies, and television...usually anything inbetween you have to be a recognizable mod or need to harass people to join your game.

Yeah, I had trouble with stand-up for the latter reason, I'm a new mod. My suggestion, find a popular topic and aim small, maybe 13-18 players. Establish yourself as a good mod, then players will join. How else does Stan get 35 players and 5 alternates for a pretty specific topic in Birds of Prey?

Thanks for the advice so far. I'm definitely not going to aim higher than 18 for my first couple games.
My current goal is to become established and moderately well liked, so I can make another push to start Dresden Files. That's why I'm looking for a popular theme to jump start my first game.

I had one good mainstream idea while in ECON 311 today.
The Raft
After a catastrophic accident, supervillains in Marvel's largest meta-human prison are trapped hundreds of feet underground with no light, no supervision and a dangerous set of enemies who do not appreciate the criminal element.
Thoughts?

I could only get 11 players for the dc/south park game myself...not sure if theme was too weird or what *shrugs*

This is true. Pick a very well known theme that your typical comic/heroclix fan would like. That's what drew most (though not all) of the mafia players to the site in the first place.

This is good advice. Start simple. Don't go nuts with weird powers and stuff until you've got enough of a handle on modding. It's a lot tougher than it seems. I make mistakes constantly and I have been doing this for years.

This sounds like a great starting idea. It would bring in even more players if you allowed them to submit a list via pm of 5 villains they'd like to be. You can either design the game around who picked what or do it on your own and just let them have one of their choices if it was already set to be in the game. The understanding that not everyone will get one of their choices is obvious. I would also allow an established mod who doesn't want to play in that theme to help you with game balance.

Thanks for the advice. Quebbs was helping me with Dresden Files and helped me work out quite a few kinks. I plan on finding some help for this game as well.
I think allowing players to request villains is a really good idea. I might post a sign-up this week, so I can start working on roles relatively soon.
If this goes well, I was also talking with some friends about a Daily Show themed mafia. Should pry focus on the game at hand though. :p

Sounds like a splendid idea. I'd play, even if I couldn't request a character.

Walking dead or Secret Six would be cool.

I would really like to do a Six or Suicide Squad game, but that would be down the road, as I'd like to create upwards of 25 roles.
