My name is Kyle Richmond, but to those who imperil freedom I am better known as Nighthawk. Well okay, so I'm not so well known. But that's because I prefer to stay under the radar. Get more done that way.

I originally thought joining the Defenders was a great idea. An unofficial grouping of superheroes, working outside the public eye, with diverse abilities. I mean, who wouldn't? Of course I joined up at the first opportunity.

But that Doctor Strange, he really is a kook. America is being invaded by hostile forces and what does he do? Takes the team out of the country to go help a super-villain back into power. Seriously? He thinks he knows so much what with his 'All-Seeing-Eye of Agga-whatsit' but I have my own sources. Namor is a menace, and we would be better off with someone else on the throne of Atlantis.

So there I was, finally taking a well-earned rest after helping clean up the aftermath of Doom's invasion when, poof! I'm suddenly in the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Seems Hellcat had some zany notion that they needed me for their current mission. Stealth isn't really a strong suit of the other Defenders I guess. She said something about a legend about an ancient barbarian thief, but I don't see how that had anything to do with me.

"I gotta tell you guys, I've pretty much had it with this team. But I'm not one to turn away from friends in their time of need, so I'll help you out this time. You can count me out of future missions though."

They filled me in on the history of this whole serpent crown thing, and next thing I know we're chasing after the would-be new Queen Llyra making good her escape, and flushing out the last of her goons. After she vamoosed I made my way over to check out what she'd been reading lately. Looks like Strange was on the right track; she'd been cramming on ancient Atlantean/Lemurian history. What really shocked me was that she'd marked some pages in the old tomes about Kulan-Gath, that same rookie mage from the story who was playing Vader to Thulsa-Doom's Emperor. Turns out spent the last final centuries of Atlantis' time above water becoming a wizard powerful enough to rival the Doc himself. She'd marked his tomb on a map, somewhere in the jungles of South America, what was once the furthest fringe of the Lemurian kingdom.

I grabbed the map and a couple of tomes and high-tailed it back to the others. The Doc got pretty excited when I told him about where the tomb was. Apparently the spot had changed hands over the years, being first a Lemurian temple, then conquered by ancient Romans who established a colony right over top of it! They renamed it 'Nova Roma', before the Roman empire fell and the colony disappeared into the jungle. Not even the Doc knew exactly what had become of the city, but I could seem his eyes bugging at the chance to rediscover it.

Strange did another one of his teleportation rituals to get us all there. First thing I noticed was the unbearable heat and humidity. Namor seemed to love it, but what do you expect from a guy that wears speedos most of the time? We were in dense jungle, and through the trees I could see marble columns that looked just like the ancient roman buildings you see in Italian travel brochures. The wierd part was, they weren't ruins. They looked well-tended except for some overgrowth clinging to them, but this being the jungle that didn't surprise me. While I was puzzling that one out and Strange was trying to read the map, a veritable Roman legion came out of the trees. They were yelling at us in Latin, but luckily the Doc said something back to them. I don't know what he said, but at least they didn't start throwing spears at us.

Then a black haired femme fatale stepped ahead of the soldiers, and one look was enough to tell she was the boss. The soldiers all bowed their heads a little, and shied away from even letting her get to close to their personal space, though they tried to act casual about it. There was definitely something weird about her, her skin was way to pale for someone that lived in South America, and she was swaddled with black robes that must have been murder in that sort of jungle heat. She greeted Strange in Latin, and the two exchanged a few short sentences and a lot of sharp glares before she suddenly switched to perfect English!

"So what have we here? More barbarians come to ransack our temple? You're more colorful than the last group, I'll give you that. We drove off your snake-men, and so we shall also drive you away. So says Selene, High Priestess of Nova Roma!"

this issue does look like fun; straightforward at first glance, but with a nice, small plot twist involving Selene and the repercussions if she gets away... subscribing to observe... :-)

You can now choose if you want 2 HOs and 1 LO, or vice versa.

2000AD is basically the same as Ult X-men and Alpha Flight (except for all 2000AD TA members have to choose the same target)

unfortunately, the Latin alphabet is the one used for English. calling them 'A', 'B' or 'C' just doesn't have the same ring.

Story:

I tried to tell the other Defenders to proceed with caution, but Namor wouldn't have any of it. "These surface dwellers don't stand a chance against me. Imperious Rex!" He flew right at them. A Centurion hurled his spear at Namor and he laughed at it....until it pierced his tough skin. He ripped it out and threw it back at the Centurion incredibly powerfully, knocking the roman warrior down with the force of it.

"Those are no ordinary weapons." the Doc surmised.

"No kidding Doc." I said. "We better get up there and help him. Valkyrie gave a warrior's cry and charged into the fray, and I followed behind, trying to keep up.

Dr. Strange, the Last Defender, Turn 16b:

1) Doc attacks Corvus. AV of 9 vs DV of 13. Needs a 4. Rolls either a 6 or a 9 (I pressed the roller twice as it didn't seem to work at first and not sure which one was first). Either way it's a hit and the KO.

And that is game! It would be interesting to know who would've won had we played it out.

true, it would be interesting. if you want to play it out just for kicks, i'm game.

for most of the game, i figured the end results would be Strange surviving and Selene escaped.

Epilogue for issue #14:

My name is Stephen Strange, and I am the Sorcerer Supreme. While that title alone speaks volumes of my prowess in the mystic arts, there are yet some individuals with the skills to challenge me. It seems that this day I have found one such person.

The sorceress Selene countered my every spell, while her roman legions's skills with sword and arrow were brought to superhuman levels by her mystical enhancements. They were quickly overpowering my fellow Defenders who I am sorry to say were ill-prepared for such an assault. I had clearly been remiss in this. Nonetheless, I was able to eventually able to remove the enchantments on her followers before they could remove me from the battle. Then it was merely her and I. Her spells were certainly formidable, but my defenses were attuned to her now. Even the chaotic magics she wields were no match for the Shields of the Seraphim. I attempted to go on the offense, but her spells of protection were just as adequate as my own.

"Hold." I said simply. "This is getting us nowhere."

Selene ceased her attacks, but her shields remained. "You are more powerful than any mage I have encountered before." She had to admit, a grudging respect in her voice.

"Indeed. That is why I am the Sorceror Supreme."

Selene's eyes widened briefly at that statement, but she quickly regained her composure. "You are not welcome here. The tomb of Kulan Gath is under my protection. Supreme or not I will fight to my death to defend it."

It appeared we were not enemies after all. Perhaps an alliance could be forged, if it were not too late to gain her trust. "My comrades and I are merely trying to end the tyranny of the madwoman Llyra. We tracked her here from distant Atlantis. I fear she is looking to learn the secrets of the tomb for herself."

Selene's eyes narrowed now, as if testing the truth of my words. "A small band of snake-men were here a short while ago. My soldiers dispatched them, though not without losses."

"That was merely a scouting party. Llyra herself will not be dealt with so lightly. She wields a potent artifact from ancient times, and is hungry for even more power. She will return, and in greater numbers. But I can offer you my aid in defeating her."

"How do I know that I can trust you?" She asked.

"I am the Sorcerer Supreme. It is my mandate to protect the earth from those who would use their power for evil, as it is the mandate of my comrades the Defenders."

"Lofty talk, but only mere words. I will need more than that to let you into my good graces." Selene said, her eyes searching my face for any clue to my intentions. After a momentary pause, she decided to be the first to reveal a small secret. "I have abilities beyond my knowledge of spells and charms. One of my talents allows me to read your mind and determine if what you say is truth... if you will let down your shielding."

I was ill at ease with this idea. I didn't like the idea of letting anyone inside me head, knowing the cosmic secrets and unspeakable terrors that my eyes had witnessed and kept locked away. But I felt I had little choice. I had to earn her trust somehow, and with Llyra soon to return I did not have the luxury of a drawn out discourse. I had to trust that my will would not falter, and Selene would find my thoughts untouchable save for those that I presented to her. My mind calm and clear, I lowered the Shield of the Seraphim and spoke, "Very well."

She smiled and walked seductively up to me, running her gloved hand across my forehead and holding her body uncomfortably close to me. She closed her eyes, then gasped as she glimpsed the battle at Atlantis and even the ancient tales of pre-cataclysmic Atlantis I had unearthed. I began feeling weak at the knees. Was this woman really affecting my composure? No there was something more....just as she broke contact I realized that she had also siphoned off a scant sliver of my life force. How foolish I had been! So preoccupied about protecting my thoughts that I had allowed her to bleed my soul, even if only by a drop. She smiled when she saw the annoyance on my face and licked her wine-red lips as though savoring the taste.

"Very nice. You have now earned my trust Stephen Strange. But I fear your minions the Defenders fell quickly against my legion, they will be of no use to us. How would you suggest we best prepare for Llyra's assault?"

"I have one more ally I can yet call to my aid, and he is the strongest one of all..."
