View Full Version : What's Next?: Captain America
<img src="/images/mca_booster_preview.jpg" width="200px" style="padding-right:5px;float:left">In the last What's Next? (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304734), poll results came back with strong support for GSX, followed by the upcoming Superman set. But what of the "mini-sets" that are coming out?
One of the products that was showcased at Toy Fair this year was Captain America, which is a movie tie-in set ... which sadly brought up the rear just ahead of Lord of the Rings and Iron Maiden.
Is there no love for the mini-sets ... or is this a reflection of Captain America himself?
It's probably mostly a reflection of GSX being right now, more than any bias one way or the other about Cap.
I, of course, voted Cap. :cheeky:
Another thing, I just thought of - everybody isn't yet on the same page with it being a full set or a micro set only.

I dig the Cap figs, as well as the sales model in general. If booster prices are going to go up (or new price levels are going to continue, ala Super Boosters), it helps to have something that'd make a great, justifiable impulse buy.
I think it's an interesting model; and will target people in that price range as long as the figures are usable. One thing that I really liked about well-designed TCG/CGGs are the ones that allow for a "pack war" type format, where a game could be played based on the contents of a pack because of the tight distribution. Packs act as mini starters for pick-ups games.

I believe that the Captain America set is coming out both as a Full set and as a Micro set with the same sculpts but different dials. The Superman set is the one that I am most looking forward to :)

Totally this!
I'm probably more excited about a Captain America (full set) set than any set since Hammer of Thor.

I'm personally chomping at the bit for GSX; as soon as I've got my latest fix, I'm sure I'll be all about Cap's set. With GLA scheduled to be included, the Squirel Girl fanboys will ravenously devour this set.

If by "movie tie in" you mean that it happens to come out at the same time a Captain America movie comes out then ok. This is actually going to be a set unrelated to the movie.
The Green Lantern mini set is a movie tie in. Green Lantern looks like Ryan Reynolds in the pics.

I can't wait for the full Cap set and the mini set! I can do without Iron Maiden clix. I MIGHT get a few figs from LOTR, but Cap and Supes will be my main clix buys this fall.

We've already had a confirmation on the entirety of a Cpt. America set, with about 60 figures, and some with removable pieces. As well as a mini-set that goes along with it, with 10 pieces that use the same sculpts but have entirely different dials.
(Meaning there's a possibility for 3 Black Widows, so I'm totally game. 1 in both sets, and the hopes of a Yelena Belova.)
I'm actually looking forward to pretty much every dial showcased to having a secondary version, because that'll make each character much easier to field. As well as a secondary version of generics? (The HYDRA agent) Hells yeah.

I'm more excited by the Cap set than any other planned release. I'm glad that it is going to be a full set and not just a mini-set, but either way I would be excited.
I'm actually pretty excited about the movie; and I'm certainly glad to see sculpts being reused (I'm a stats man; so the sculpts play a small role for me). If WizKids can put out sets fasters (and more cost effective) and add flavor in the form of paper (dials and cards), I'm all for it. Increasing the price of boosters just because a mold has to have a certain run size doesn't justify it for me.
I'm very excited for the Cap America set! I'm not AS excited for the 10 figure mini set as I am the full release.
The Cap set is also much more interesting to me than the Superman set, though that just happens to be more about my love of Brubaker's Cap run and general "meh" feeling about lots of Superman writers. I think the 90's cartoon were the best Superman stories for me.
Bucky as Captain America has been one of the most surprising and well-done revisionist takes on any comicbook character in years, and it is exciting as hell to finally get a Heroclix figure of him.
Plus the chance to get a Red Skull that hopefully compensates for the poor one from Avengers? Hell yes! Bring on the Cap set!

I love Captain America as a character but I haven't read the books at all. So the set looks a little weird to me - because I don't know the comics - i know the characters from reading comics years ago and from collecting clix more recently and the occasional read. A bunch of shield and howling commandos and villains I don't know - not so sure about. I know about buck/cap but that sculpt on the promo is kind of a turn off and there is no classic cap sculpt in the WK promos, which I find interesting - not really hitting on the movie marketing very well. i am excited for movie and I think it is cool there is new game element, but I can't say the initial news and art has got me saving up to buy some of it.
The reveal of the full, 60-figure Captain America set has increased my interest in the smaller set, because it means we are getting two different dials of each of the mini set characters. Red Skull is begging for two more attempts to get his dial right.

I cant wait for GSX.
After that both the GL and Cap micro sets look cool. I think that they are a great idea, I hope to complete both sets with extra footsoldiers.
LOR = awesome
Full size Cap set is another win to me. I hope it has some heroic age figures(hawkeye). I am glad to see the game continue to evolve with the new removable game mechanic.
Keep making clix and I'll keep buying them.

I don’t remember what I voted for originally. This vote was before the full Cap set was announced, I think. In general, I think mini-sets generate less excitement than full sets, just because there are fewer figures, there’s less speculation, and therefore less buzz to get excited about. I know there are several figures in the mini-set I’m looking forward to. Black Widow desperately needs to be brought up to date. Both the CT and Ultimates versions were pretty good for their time, and the Ultimates version is still more playable than a lot of figures from that time period, but a Modern Age 616 Widow is high among my wanted remakes. Very close second is the Red Skull. The CT version wasn’t especially good even back then and the Avengers version’s stats were weak and he’s just so self-destructive with that Cosmic Cube power, it’s almost like giving your opponent the 123 points. You’ll probably do more damage to him than they will. And a new Klaw, new Hydra Agents, Bucky Cap, and a 616 Nick Fury that’s not a Unique/Super-Rare figure are all good things too.
Now getting all these and then the full Cap set with all the new figures we’re seeing there too has definitely got me far more excited than either GSX or the still-vague Superman set. Maybe when we get more details about Superman, my excitement level there will go up, but for now, Cap looks to be the highlight of my Clix year.
I agree with Sol that the release of GSX is overshadowing the mini sets. I think since there has been a steady release in the past year the mini set just don't bring as much to the table. Personally I am excited for any new sets, because being a new player there are many sets I am unable to collect because they are out of print.

I am all stoked out by news of a cap set... i'm actually holding off most of my heroclix cash for that set.
Cap got my number one vote, even before the full set was announced. After it was announced, it instantly skyrocketed to my favorite set of all time.
I like the mini-set, big set thing with different dials, it's sort of an REV-lite, and I've always been a fan of varying point costs for single characters (I can't fit HoT Thor on my Avengers team, so hello, Supernova R Thor!).
GSX is gonna be great, and it's right around the corner, and we've already seen some dials from it, so those factors might've swung the vote in its favor. Plus, as I said, when the vote was out, Cap was still a mini-set. It's just easier to get excited about 63+ new characters than it is about 10 (unless you're me, and the 10 include Bucky Cap and Red Skull and HYDRA!).

Lord of the Rings will be just awesome. The minisets are a bit overshadowed, but LotR is majorly so. Imagine how awesome it will be to have Smeagle bite Hal Jordan's finger off to claim his precious?
And Sauron >>>>>> YOU.

I'm looking forward to all the marvel sets, and the new superman set. As well as street fighter. I probably can't afford much LOTR but I'll probably snag a few pieces (gollum, nazguls, maybe some treants depending on sculpts)
I like the idea of the cap mini set with different dials since the brick figure nick LMD is likely to Also appear in the mini set (but with a different dial) which could have some fun possibilities.
I'll definetely pick up some of the mini set, but I'm much more interested in the full sets at the moment. I still have dozens of figures to catch up on from prior sets, and barely enough cash to manage this new stuff though :\

For my wallet, I'm have no problem with either the Cap and the GL mini- sets. I was looking forward to both of them and was glad that for a little bit of time Neca was slowing down Heroclix with the release of all their other products like LOTR, Smurfs, Star Trek, Iron Maiden. It would also have given all of us a chance to finally complete some past sets.
Seeing that there also giving us a full size Cap set about a week later. I like that too, but I also would have been happy to have just gotten the mini-sets. Cap is probably my 2nd favorite Marvel character behind Daredevil and getting a full set of him is something I hope is done right.
My biggest hope in the full size Cap set is that we get everyone of the Howling Commandos. Nick, Dum Dum, Izzy, Red, Gabe, Percy, Dino, Junior & even Captain Sawyer their C.O. It would be fun playing all of them together with a WWII version of Cap and Bucky.
The biggest complaint I have about the full set is that it looks like we will get the same sculpts from the mini set but with new dials on them. I think there making a mistake in doing that, but hopefully with that news they decide against making any figure a "Chase type" rarity.
I just hope that if they continue with these mini-sets they give all of the sculpts SR quality.

Look at that packaging.
I still think it's very improbable that the single booster figures will have a character card with them.
Without a character card, they can't have special powers or traits.
I'm not sure how great these figures can be without special powers or traits and still be worth $3 each.

Honestly I think the poll was a bit flawed to begin with. GSX has had a lot of spoilers so people know what they are getting and like it. Superman, Iron Maiden and Lord of the Rings, we virtually know nothing about. I am a DC guy(I do buy some of the Marvel sets) but even I can't get excited about Superman because I simply have no idea what is in it(hence my choice of Iron Maiden)

BTW at this time I am excited about the mini boosters, but they have to make sure coalation is good. The price should be good and it will be cool for the guest star scenarios we run. Buy 3 mini-boosters and use one for each game with your 300 point team.

It's probably mostly a reflection of GSX being right now, more than any bias one way or the other about Cap.
I think this is correct.
Saying it's "just ahead" of Iron Maiden and LOTR isn't really accurate...it has twice the votes of one and like 5 times the votes of the other...it's still WAY ahead of either of them.
I voted Superman, but I'm almost equally excited for GSXM and the Captain America set (and it's pretty excited!). I'm a little less excited about the Green Lantern set, since I can't get it at my FLGS. :P

I am looking at that packaging, and to me, it looks no smaller than an individual LE packed in the plastic bag (WITH CARD) that comes in the OP Kits. Sure, the cards will be bent a little. But they have already shown with LE's that they are willing to do that. There is absolutely no reason to think by looking at the packages that there will not be cards with them.

I was ALL FOR the mini sets. BUT when they announced that there is also going to be a full 63 fig set (Cap), based on the same characters and sculpts, it made me a little jaded.
I really like getting everything that is clix, but with this last minute addition of the full Cap set, I really have to make some decisions.
What I usually do, is that I budget myself to get a case(2 bricks), a couple of loose boosters on release day and to go to the 2 buy in events at our 2 venues.
(I realize this sounds like a lot, and it is, but this is my Golf here. Daddy needs some time away.)
I was really stoked to get the GL mini-set (not so much for Hal, Ganthet or Sinestro.), the Cap mini-set, The Street Fighter set (Yes I am a fan.), the Superman set and then some singles of the LOTR set.
But now, I am probably just going to be getting singles of GL and Cap set. I am going to hold off, until I see what the dials are. From what I understand, the dials in the mini-sets are going to be different from what are in the action pack (fast Forces, whatever they are calling it.) and the full Cap set.
I'm Still going to be getting Street Fighter and I am still going to get Superman. LOTR, I will still get singles of. Since we have no idea what the last set of the year is going to be (Probably Marvel, meh.) I have no idea what or if I will get any of that.
Right now as a long time, faithful player/customer I am now running into a cross roads where I cannot and probably should not get everything that is clix. There is too much saturation of product coming out.
Am I excited for it, Yes!!! Can I get what I want out of it? Probably, but I am going to have to back off on it.
Personally, I love the idea of the minisets, and I hope to see them take it even further in the future with small indy expansions like TMNT, Authority, or Madman & the Atomics!
I have to say, I was pretty disappointed when I first heard about the full 63 figure expansion for Captain America. Not because that set doesn't sound cool... after some reflection I was able to get excited about it... But because it relegated the miniset to a bunch of alternate dials from the core set... instead of it being an easily digestible product that I could collect without breaking my bank... now its an ADDITION set, on top of a full expansion of EXTRA things to buy. It's a bit much. What's wrong with the Mini sets standing on their own?
In the Future Wizkids: Give us these mini sets, but make them worthwhile! I'd rather not have a separate product of remade dials to collect in another format. Stick to using this distribution method where it's called for, and please don't release a mini set along side every standard expansion!

I'm like a level one completionist ( I collect almost everything, but within my own personal guidelines)... so I'm both happy and sad... happy I get all these great figures I want, but sad because it pains my wallet buying all the new stuff when I'm still catching up on the old.
I do like the idea of mini-sets though as long as they have cards and such like the regular sets.... well generics are an exception to this for me though.
I think you're projecting what you think the size of those single figure boosters is. there's no size reference object in the picture. I think they will turn out to be big enough to fit a card in there.
just a hunch.

On the topic of what to buy/not buy, I rank them this way:
1. Cap mini-set - In for a full case/box of these, as I want all the figures and multiples of generics. Plus the trade value oughtta be decent.
2. Cap full set - I'm in for a case, along with some loose boosters most likely. Call it a case and a half. I'm already jazzed about the figures we've seen, and I can't imagine I'll be disappointed with the rest of the selection.
3. Superman set - Brick plus some loose boosters. I'm a bit DCed out at this point, so I may just stick with the brick. I'm hoping there'll be an E2 for all the fans of the character who couldn't afford the chase, and a KC Supes with JSA TA.
4. GL mini-set - I'll cherry pick this one. I have enough Hals, couldn't care less about the alien Lanterns (aside from Kilowog), and no generics.
5. LOtR - Unless there's a real solid self-contained game somewhere in there, not interested.
6. Iron Maiden - ComPLEtely apathetic. Don't care, don't care, a THOUSAND TIMES don't care.

The boxes look not much bigger than the old LE boxes that figures came in. Back when there weren't characters cards, by the way.
Look at the Klaw on the package. In my opinion, that is how big the figures are going to be, which will be standard size, but the best reference on the package.
Now compare the size of a figure with a character card. The character card is almost twice as wide and twice as tall. The packaging just doesn't look big enough to be twice the width and height of the claw image.
The only way a character card would fit in that packaging would be if the figures were 1/2 as tall and 1/2 as wide as the claw on the package.
They'd be tiny!
I rest my case. Using basic proportions, it just doesn't seem possible that the package is big enough to hold a standard character card.
Take these conclusions how you want, either way, I don't see them coming with a standard character card.

I, on the other hand, want MORE remade dials. I like the idea. As I said, they're like REVs, so I can play Cap, at two different point costs, or with potentially two different play styles (shield throw Cap vs. martial artist Cap, for example). That appeals to me quite a bit. It seems like a really good compromise for more dials.

The character pictures on the packages aren't in scale to the figures in the boosters. We know this, because if you look at them there are several different scales pictured. (bucky's dial is twice as big as the others) To base any assumptions on those pictures is kind of laughable.
What we can base size on, is the slatwall in the background. A standard retail store slatwall bar is 3" (http://www.slatwall.nu/slatwallpanels.html) Compare the size of the bars to the boxes, and it looks like they are taller than the bars. If the bars are 3", and the Boxes are taller than the bars, and the cards are 3", one could assume there is PLENTY of room in the box for a card. Especially considering the LE figures with cards sealed in the plastic bags, come out to less than 3" tall. (the cards are always bent)
Note: even assuming those are standard slatwalls it's silly of me (or anyone) to make an assumption here even based on this. The boosters are closer up in the picture, causing the slatwalls to appear smaller than they probably are. This again, is just my opinion.
I seriously doubt at this point wizkids is going to start producing figures without cards

On a lighter note....... I'm personally very excited about the micro-sets. I'm not a huge marvel fan. The micro-sets allow me to flesh out my collection with a little marvel without investing into a full set (i'm one of those completionists, if I buy a few boosters I'll end up trying to get the whole 63 figure set) This way, I can complete a set with much less investment, still get a few of the hot new marvel figures to flesh out my teams, and I don't feel bad that I have incomplete sets sitting in my boxes.
Target, Walmart, K-mart, local brick and mortar, ebay, I don't really care where I have to buy it. I know i'll be tracking them all down.

I voted for Superman (or whatever the large DC set turns out to be).
I am all for the other comic sets, mind you, and even some of the Street Fighter for collectability purposes. It is just that, when I read here somewhere that the gravity feeds would not be available at my local comic/gaming shop, it ruined my exuberance for those sets, as I doubt I'll hunt around for stuff and end up overpaying on the secondary market.

Thanks for pointing out the undisputed obvious I geuss. No where once has anyone or myself said that there will NOT be one. I am well aware that it is at least a distinct possibility, and was in no way shape or form disputing that fact. The original post stated as a fact that there would be one. I responded pointing out that it has not been 100% confirmed that we would have one, which it in fact has NOT been confirmed. It's still a POSSIBILITY that it won't happen.
Is it likely to happen? Sure, but that wasn't really part of the conversation.
I am excited about GSX. But mainly because its the next set coming out. Personally I'm a big fan of the Captain America comic series and am happy to finally get my hands on a Bucky-Captain America. I only worry with mini-sets the problem of collecting a full set. And I guess that is where eBay comes in.

I'm just a big clix fan and comic fan, so to me the next thing is the best thing (until proven otherwise with sneak peaks). Giant Size X-Men looks awesome and I've been so impressed with how the most recent sets have worked so well. There are not too many pieces from common to chase that I haven't enjoyed. Less than 2 weeks away and maybe I'll find out what the 6th colossal figure will be.

There are both, a 63 figure full set AND a micro-set. This has been confirmed.....Check suttkus's 'evidence' threads in the rumors section.
I know, I just meant there is a lot of Captain America compared to the other licenses with micro sets.
I love this Captain America set, both full and mini set. And I'm from the Netherlands lol...

I am exited for all this new set, I want to buy all of them but allways with a good dial, competitive with tthe main figures like Cap and Sup's competitive and Red Skull and other villans being powerfull enoutgh to destroy an entire army. Comeone Wizkids let me rest between set a little bit because my money is gona explote!!!
I am into Heroclix for both the Gaming and to collect Scultps, but do prefer the costume schemes and sculpts to be more of what I remember the seeing in the Comics of the 70's-2006 period. I am not into the 1940's looking Captain America shooting a gun. Would have hoped they could have made a sculpt as detailed as HOT, but with a pose where he threw his shield with the shield a little ways off the hand and parallel to the ground.

I am glad there is a cap set coming out. I just wish it wasnt done in this format.
Its a result of captain america himself. Hes a character who got "super" by taking "steroids" and is super patriotic to a point that would make uncle sam sick.

Spoken as only somebody who has never picked up a Captain America comic could.
