My students have to right a report on a Superhero for extra credit, and we had a debate about what the classification of a supehero is, they contend that the CARE BEARS are superheros, along with Robo Cop.
I told them the CBs were definately not Super Heros, and figured Robo wasn't either.
My classifcation scheme:
1. crime fighter
2. spandex
3. secret identity
So what is the classification of a superhero?

NOt all of the characters have secret Identities. Tony Stark, Captain America, and a few others. So a secret identity is not a must.
Care Bears aren't super heroes?
They have super powers that come out of their bellies!
Comon! Let's all do the Care Bear chant and see if we can't change your mind.

I hope they don't have to "right" an english paper;)
I don't neccesarily count the spandex or any sort or uniform, it could be argued that punisher has no uniform... but then again is punisher a superhero? Hmm, I suppose that the classifications are a bit broader than that, because Black Panther isn't a hero, super or other wise, you could argue the same for say namor.
I say let em do robocop, he's definitely border line, but he'll be variety since you'll be getting tons of supermans and batmans and etc.

My definition:
Superhero;
1) He has to be able to do more than the common man (ie be super)
2) He has to fight for the rights/lives/safety of the common man (ie be a hero)
In that sense, yea, robocop would be a superhero. (As long as he isnt just following programming instrucions. That would rule him out of the "hero" category and put him into the "tool" category. i.e. just a "tool" of the police force, like a billy-club really. ;) )
And I dont think the care-bears fall into either category really! :p
I guess you're right...
Animals with powers shouldn't be superheroes...
Otherwise, we'd have to make Pikachu a hero.... I don't like that...
I choose you! Cheerful bear!
Pikachu wouldn't be a super-hero anyways. What does that lazy thing do to save anyone? :P Atleast the carebears have a somewhat plausible argument.

Care Bear Stare!!!
... sorry, I couldn't resist.
That's right... it was a stare...not a chant....
What was *I* thinking?
:)
I don't know about care bears, but Robo was definately a super-hero.
Also to refute your deinition (just because I'm bored)
1. crime fighter
Captian America fights enemies of America, not necessarily criminals. Soviet spies, Nazi soldiers, Red chinese infiltrators. All "Bad guys" but not technically criminals.
2. spandex
Spandex free heroes: Iron Man, Black Knight, Thor, Hercules plus a whole lot of the women who wear lace and nylon and little else (mmmmmm... White Queen)
3. secret identity
Secret ID free heroes: Tony Stark, Luke Cage (also no spandex), Shang Chi, Namor, Aquaman, Green lantern (one of them anyway), etc.
So, whats my definition? OK, this is a cop out, but I'd say that depends on what you need from your hero. I would say it the heroic quality rather than the super quality. (see my tag). NYFD is full of superheroes with no super-powers, as are High schools and hospitals.

When did Tony Stark go public? Admittedly I essesntially gave up on new comics a couple years back, but last I remember he had a secret (and very well protected) ID.

Tony Stark revealed his identity a couple of months ago in Avengers.
Here's my take on what makes a superhero...
Being a hero is not about what's up here (taps head), or what's here (taps arm), but what's in here (taps chest). It's all about heart. It's about doing what's right. It's about helping others, even it it means putting yourself at risk.
Now, to be a superhero, you have to have all of that, and then go a step further, go above and beyond what normal folks can do. It might be skill, it might be power, but it's something not everyone else has.
Don't confuse anti-heroes with superheroes. Anti-heroes don't necessarily do the right thing, but they are on the right side.

What are you talking about??
Spiderham is most certainly a superhero. And lest we forget Gleek? He was a member of the Superfriends, but is not a super hero??
And what about the Shirt Tails? Those funky, T-shirt wearing do-gooders from yesteryears that lived in the park tree that was attended by Mr. Whipple?? Tig the tigger that ran real fast and made the"Doinnnnng!!" sound when he did it.
So Flash can run real fast and be a superhero, but Tig cannot??
Dear Lord, did I just say that out loud??

I did a research about super-heroes when in college, and my definition was a super-hero is somebody who has exceptional abilities or even super human powers and uses his/hers talents to protect others.
About animal super heroes, well Krypto, Bathound and others come to mind.
