Marvel. at least when reading marvel I dont have to go:
"So, is this the pre, post, original, DE-pwered, new-power-set, earth 2, earth 1, earth 42, cousin, clone, robot, Past, Future, OR Kingdom Come Superman???"

In marvel its SIMPLE: Zombies, ULTIMATES, "NORMAL"(better word for that), clone, robot, or lost in time.

Just so you guys know it's Geoff Johns. I have always loved the fantasy of DC, with Superman and Green Lantern. Guys who could never be hurt unless it was some sort of insane thing like a rock and magic or the color yellow. Marvel enticed me in with their fantastic characters, and simple yet complex emotions. Each of Stan Lee's characters deal with about ONE emotion and it created a huge amount of story fodder because we ALL feel those emotions at some time and thus we can relate to those characters. All those things are fantastic, but at the end of the day the comics I choose to read greatly depend on who is writing the series and who is illustrating it. Geoff Johns and a crappy illustrator will have me glance over the book. Equally important if Jim Lee is doing the illustrations and some hack is writing I wont buy it. I love both but DC has just a tiny edge on Marvel for me... unless you're talkin movies...

I didn't want to join the debate as I think it's useless ... but after seeing this post, I must reply.

I think it's the other way around. Marvel is more "quality" than "quantity". DC must have 80 000 characters (including alternate versions, pre- & post- crisis, clones, ...) as Marvel, though there is a few "alternate versions" has far less characters.

But to say as others did, in terms of A class characters, they're pretty much equal. Loved Civil War, Secret Invasion, Blackest Night and Brightest Day. Hated Siege and Final Crisis. Hopefully, Flashpoint, War of the Green Lanterns and Fear Itself will all be good!

Both companies copy off each other constantly so really it just comes down to which characters you like more. For me it's Marvel. I still like DC, but while there's only two DC heroes in my top favorites comic book heroes, the rest are Marvel characters.

I have phases... right now I'm in a DC phase.

Meee Toooo. For years I was all hardcore about Marvel (X-Men specifically). I read everything X-Men related (other than Beast's appearances in Avengers since I can't stand them) from 1963 to 1992. By then I was totally burned out on anything Marvel related. Mostly due to the X-Men's time in Australia (which was soooo boring). I also read Fantastic Four from 1961 to about 1984 (when they gave Sue that horrendous hair style).

Now I'm all over DC. So far I've read all Green Lantern issues from 1962 to 2006, Flash v2 from issue one to 2006, all of Young Justice, Impulse, The Power of Shazam, Starman (James Robinson), JSA from 2000 to 2006, Marv Wolfman's Teen Titans (at about 2006 in Geoff John's TT), all of Green Arrow v1, and others here and there. I loved John Byrne's Superman but the writers who took over messed up all of his good work.

Right now I'm finishing up Infinite Crisis. This has to be my favorite crossover I have read thus far. Can't wait until I start 52, Black Adam is so awesome.

After I finish up these crises I want to check out this Red Hulk stuff that everyone is talking about. Sounds pretty cool.

I buy alot more Marvel Comics and Clix, but, I have been getting into DC comic and clix wise lately. Blackest Night and Batman, Doomsday, and New Lobo comics mainly. But which universe do I like? I like them equally. I grew up on DC and Marvel cartoons in the 90s. The movies too. Come to think of it I only had a few comics when I was growing up...It wasn't til I got a job that I started collecting Comics, then Clix... I see something cool in the ever expanding comic collection then I'm all "Man I need that as a Clix!" and thankfully Heroclix delivers it not too soon after. Man I hope they make an Omegex. Whatever it is I bet it's dial will be Onslaught bad...Wait where am I? Have I been ranting off? OH man I need to go ride a bike...

If you remove the Rainbow Brite Lantern stuff form DC they have nothing, period. Didio is a retard and Grant Morrison is a brutal hack.

I'd still take them both over Matt Fraction, Ed Brubaker, or Brian Bendis any day. Hell, nine times out of ten, i'd even take J.T. Krull or Jimmy Palmiotti over those three.

I was mostly a Marvel guy for years and years, having the only DC titles I followed being Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash, and occasionally Justice League. However, as of right now, most of what DC is putting out is just better. It's clear that the DC editorial cares a lot more about the integrity and continuity of the characters in their books than the Marvel editorial does. Likewise, the talent at DC, guys like Dan Jurgens, Keith Giffen, Paul Cornell, and Geoff Johns put guys like Bendis, Fraction, and Brubaker to shame. The only explicitly Marvel writer I would say consistently writes amazing and entertaining stories is Jonathan Hickman. Don't get me wrong, I also like Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, but they do a whole bunch of other work. Greg Pak is pretty good also, but not quite there with Giffen, Jurgens, or Cornell.

That's not to say I still don't love me my Marvel, it's just that DC currently has more to offer me. I prefer the stories they're telling (mostly, Secret Warriors is frickin incredible and it's from Marvel), and their story telling methods currently interest me more.

voNvinGeLimeR

For example, Marvel is fullfield with mutants that 1 year later nobody will remenber.

Quality? Deadpool comics sucks right now. I was a huge Deadpool fan till i read Deadpool's 4th round. Now it's about "let's sell the comic, doesn't matter if it's bad writed, fans will buy it, nobody remenbers original Deadpool".

In the other hand, Superman and Green Lantern comics it's the best you can find right now. I think both companies are good but DC is more mature, better development in story, Marvel is more about cheap thrills.

From my monthly titles I think 75% is Marvel and 25% is DC/Vertigo. In my opinion Marvel has the more funny and emotional stories, while DC goes for the big events and action. I like Marvel's more down to earth style than the "clash of the titans" style of the DC universe.

I appreciate the symbolisms with Superman and Batman, but in comparison, Marvel's characters tend to be...weaker as a whole. They often need to rely on wits and allies rather than sheer power.

Of course this is a broad blanketed statement and there are exceptions on both sides.

I guess I just feel that Marvel is more "real world" and is easier to relate to while DC is more "epic" and something to aspire to.

Plus I don't like cosmic stuff very much. DC has A LOT more cosmic base than Marvel does.

I prefer real.

So Make mine Marvel!

Marvel is what got me into comics in the early 90's. I loved Spider-man, Hulk, and X-Men. Sadly Marvel's writing has gone down the tubes...Geoff Johns is one of the better writers and with him on DC's side, DC is top-dog in my opinion.

A lot of dumb $hit Marvel did really pi$$ed me off as of late. I hated house of M. I hate the new X-Men with the death of Night crawler and the so called evolution of Beast. I also hated the Red Hulk series and now the death of Johnny Strom...Just overall poor taste and story writing on Marvels behalf as of late.

03/05/2011, 20:44
This was decided a long time ago. Just depends on the kind of characters you want to read about really. On the whole Marvel has more believable and relate-able characters. Plus they don't use made up cities as the backdrop of adventurers. This makes the reader more able to imagine themselves in their favorite character's shoes or that these things could possibly happen in our world under the right set of circumstances. Not saying that all of Marvel is like this but most of it is. In DC it seems like you have to be Superman powerful or Batman cleaver just to be relevant at all. As much as I like Batman and what has been done with Green Lantern lately I still enjoy Marvel a lot more personally. I just think that the characters all fit together better than DC where so many heroes are completely pointless and Superman could take care of everything.

KirbyPunch
03/05/2011, 21:20
This is a no contest DC victory. DC will always be the better brand. I love Marvel Characters, but they just DON'T have an actual universe. Look at how many BATMAN copies Marvel has: Iron Man (Batman in Armour), Moon Knight (Crazy, Egyptian Batman), Punisher (Batman with Guns), Daredevil (Blind Acrobat Batman)...

DC has been around for much longer, and while they have had their fair share of *Face-palm* moments, they have always treated their fans with respect and striven to do the right thing, even if they have failed. Marvel ALMOST KILLED THE INDUSTRY back in the nineties.

Aquaman was fighting NAZI jerk-stores a full year before Captain America.

Without DC comics keeping the Superhero fires burning during the fifties, their would have been no SILVER AGE. Their heroes DO NOT KILL (again, has been broken recently with Green Arrow, Wonder Woman and Hal Jordan, but technically, that was Parallax...etc.). Something PREVALENT in the Marvel universe. Real heroes do not kill. DC heroes are compassionate. Marvel heroes are often grim, and dark and loners.

Even Batman knows the value of the Justice League.

DC has richer, more interesting characters;(And DEADPOOL WAS BETTER THE FIRST TIME AROUND,WHEN HE WAS CALLED AMBUSH BUG) 75 glorious years of continuity laden history, and continues to improve their standing with fans buy creating better, well crafted cohesive stories with better characters, all while releasing their books for a full buck under what the "House of Ideas" thinks is fair.

Everything you said was more crazy than the last thing lol. In the real world actual heroes DO kill when they have to. Police, the military, and people who rise to meet terrible circumstances of history are all heroes in real life many have killed. If superheroes were real many of the villains would be killed the first time they killed civilians or threatened harm to an innocent. The idea that a superhero won't kill under any circumstance is actually really dumb and defies logic. Maybe only Superman could get away with not killing but only because he could stop just about anyone without having to kill them. Heroes are people that are real and flawed, who make mistakes even if they desire to be the best person they can be.

Also, there are tons of teams in the Marvel universe and team-ups all the time. Wolverine, the biggest loner of all time, is on like every team. Your argument does not compute.

My point was that even Batman, the arguably most cynical core DC hero, believes in unity and strength in numbers, opposed to "Loner" characters like Daredevil,Moon Knight,Punisher... And Wolverine ISN'T a loner character anymore. He's a golden cash calf. SRSLY.

And real heroes DO NOT KILL. Nobody is above the law because they wear a badge, a helmet or a cape. I respect the police, and soldiers as figures of authority (Under Certain Circumstances)...But I respect the Uniform, not the person wearing the clothes. But costumed heroes? NO. Killing someone never solves anything. Superheroes should not kill, as they are what we should aspire too, not what we are.

And all the Marvel people you mention team up plenty so you are proving my point. All mainstream comic book characters have to team-up and cross paths with others because they want to sell books. Batman has no powers so he knows he needs to use those that do fight the big battles for him. But Superman? He never needs a team really. The way he is written and with his powers he can always handle anything himself. They just water him down when they want to make his supporting cast seem useful. I can't think of any major Marvel character that they depower so much for the purpose of putting them on a team but is a one man army in his comics against the biggest bad guys. Completely inconsistent.

There is a big difference between trying all other means before having to kill someone and never killing to matter what. The later is completely unrealistic if the person wants to survive and save others. Even in comics it's far more interesting when people cross that line. If they are forced into it or if they go out seeking like the newer X-Force it's definitely better for the story to have that option open. And since a lot of super villains are painted like Hilter in the real world killing them would be accepted and for the best. Wimpy heroes that won't do what is needed, which leads to good guys and innocent civilians dying, are boring and unbelievable.

And you have seen DC heroes kill too when needed, just never Superman or Batman. Killing actually would solve a lot of their problems and that is why they aren't allowed to do it. If Batman kills the Joker he saves all the lives the Joker would kill after that, but Batman can't lose a villain like that from a writing stand point. That's how it works in comics but it's just for the story. If superheroes were real most of the bad guys would be dead by now.

It'd be great if people who made polls had choices like

None of the Above

It would make more senes to cover all the bases and get a better reading on the voters.

I picked DC since A) Green Lantern is my FAVORITE hero, and B) there were only two choices on this poll.

Realisitically, I LOVE both universes for their own brands of uniqueness. Each offers some very entertaining stories and interesting heroes.

He could take supes any day of the week if he teamed up with Lex and snagged some krypton, made a .50 BMG round out of it and picked him off as went to go save a cat in a burning building.
However in DC's world the guy who doesn't actually have any powers just dresses up like a bat and punches people.
My conclusion is that Marvel is better, however i still like have both universes, each can usually complement one another in a good team build.
Rock on Heroclix.

DC had 52, but marvel had Secret invasion and planet/ww hulk

I'm confused. Are those pros or cons for the respective companies? :)

I've always been a fan of the Marvel characters, though I hear DC treats their artists and writers better.

Kurt Busiek once came to my local comics store to sign stuff and he said just about the same thing. Apparently Marvel had a tendency to 'forget' about royalties until reminded. Hopefully this has changed now that they're under Disney's corporate management.

When it comes to Heroclix pieces, I like both brands. Heroclix lets me mix and match. Captain America leading the soldiers of Easy Company! Aquaman and Namor fighting side by side to defend Atlantis! What's not to like about either?

As for the comics both have their downsides. I can't stand either Joe Quesada's smugness or Dan DiDio's hucksterish enthusiasm for whatever product he's pushing. And both comics groups go too far when they let a single 'star' writer chart the creative course of the company for a year or more at a time with a mega crossover that goes on too long, has too many tie-ins, fails to live up to its potential, or just all around sucks.

All things considered, I voted DC because in the last decade Marvel has dismantled all my favorite classic titles one by one with ridiculous story changes and greedy marketing.

Look at how many BATMAN copies Marvel has: Iron Man (Batman in Armour), Moon Knight (Crazy, Egyptian Batman), Punisher (Batman with Guns), Daredevil (Blind Acrobat Batman)...

Boiling any of these guys down to Batman clones is a grievous mistake made only on the part of those who don't read the books. Honestly, Matt Murdock, as far as character traits go, has much more in common with say, Kyle Rayner, or Clark Kent than with Bruce Wayne.

That was certainly my first thought.

Of the two, I do have a preference for DC with Hawkman being a long-time favorite.

By-and-large though there are a number of Indy properties *cough*HELLBOY!!!*cough* that I prefer over your standard DC or Marvel fare.

My DC Heroclix purchasing does far outstrip my Marvel Heroclix purchasing.

Marvel is the definitive winner in my opinion.

I will say that I enjoy the "alternate universe's" that DC uses as it paints the superheroes as fantasy, mythical beings. But this is on a rare occasion.

As a whole Marvel is just plain better.

To chime off a debate in this thread; I love it when my superheroes kill. Thats the objective isnt it? X Villain is killing everyone so Y superhero needs to kill him. If he/she doesnt then X Villain goes back to killing ASAP. To "incapacitate" X Villain is only prolonging the future effort that Y superhero will have to spend on either incapacitating again or killing said villain.

In short, I want Hawkeye to shoot flaming arrows through villains hearts. I want Captain America to decapitate villains with his shield. I want death damnit. I think I get my fill on sundays. :)

First of all, if Hawkeye is shooting someone through the heart why does he need to set them on fire, too? That's just unnecessary. And shouldn't Captain America uphold America's system of justice rather than placing himself above it?

I would say, not in any order...

1. Annihilation
2. Sinestro Corps War
3. JLA: World War 3 (the Morrison one, not 52)
4. 52 (minus their "WW3")
5. Green Lantern: Rebirth

And I'm sure there's quite a few I missed there. That's what immediately leaps to mind.

I grew up reading 90s Marvel, Jim Lees X-men and Danny Ketch Ghost Rider all the way. That being said, I feel as if Marvels characters are more 'every-mans' heroes. The Ultimate world really hitting the spot there. And DC is more mythological, 'epic', mystical in its chacters. Ive grown into a cosmic/space fan more recently, Anhilation, and the Lanterns wars, fueling that fire. Both companies have been around for many many years its like their running out of ideas ( god forbid). Ive got to go with my guts on this though and makes my marvel too.

Yes, but while both are badass, DC has John Constantine, Phantom Stranger, Etrigan, Swamp Thing, Dr. Fate, and a whole elaborate mythos for their magic. Dakeseid IS... awesome, but only comes up every once in a while and mostly comes to Earth, even in Kirby's 4th world it was about Earth. Marvel also does play up Earth's importance (it being the halfway point in Kree and Skrull war/Secret Wars), Infinity Gauntlet wasn't about earth too much, Annihilation, Conquest, Nova, GotG, War of Kings, and latest stuff were not. Marvel's cosmic has a rich history, with Galactus, Eternals, the different abstracts, all being 616.

Depends on the year. Over 40 years of collecting comics I've gone toward Marvel and then DC.

Right now DC is the best. The quality of the artwork in the books is so much better in DC right now. Of all the titles I follow, the storylines in DC right now are superior. The only Marvel storyline I really like is the one currently in the Avengers title, but the artwork is horrible.

The stupidity of Marvel in killing off Human Torch and now adding Spiderman to the FF wearing a horrible Black & White outfit. Marvel said they kill off characters just to increase sales. I hope it totally bombs. The previews for the Green Lantern war look great to me, and I'm anxious for the story to start. Also the price $$$$ is right at DC.

In heroclix, even with Cosmic Spiderman out there, DC still is better.

Movies is no contest. You have to give it to Marvel. Yes DC has had great success with the Batman movies, but the last Superman movie bombed and I dont think the new one next year will be any good. No 6'0" Brit should play Superman. Find a 6'3"/6'5" American actor to play Superman.

The way Marvel is doing the members of the Avengers movies one at a time is outstanding. Their showing DC how is need to be done. I'm really looking forward to the Thor movie this year and the Avengers team movie next year. I hope the Captain America movie is also good but I dont know. Its suppose to be WWII so why isnt Red Skull wearing swastika's? Thats already one strike against it.

At the same time I'm totally bummed DC isnt going to do a JLA movie. DC needs to branch out more and stop making "Vertigo" movies. Yes I liked the Losers, but Jonah Hex was dead before it even hit the big screen. Hopefully the Green Lantern Movie makes up for some of the bad movies DC has put out over the last few years.

In TV you have to go to DC. With Smallville having good success for 10 years and introducing many different DC heroes & villains on the show. Granted its ending soon, but Wonder Woman is coming to the small screen this fall. Hopefully it succeeds. Also Young Justice is so much bettern then Marvel Super Hero Squad.

For the cartoon DVDs. Marvel started out years ago with the better ones. Now they give us a crappy Black Panther motion comic. Its no Contest now. DC counters and wins easily with All Star Superman and Green Lantern Emerald Knights.

For toys I really have no opinion, since I see both DC and Marvel toys in just about any store you walk into anymore. So I would think there even in that catagory.

But I guess this is enough of a rant on an endless debate about who is better.

Of course DC's cosmic tradition is just as grand as Marvel's, with Adam Strange, the Legion of Super Heroes, the Thangarians, the New Gods, Lobo, L.E.G.I.O.N., the Green Lantern Corps, the Anti-Monitor, the Darkstars, the Omega Men, the Dominators, etc.

But one of Marvel's greatest cosmic stories ever was the whole Rom: Spaceknight series. I'm excited elements of that series are showing up in Annihlators (minus any explicit mention of Rom himself, being a licensed property of Parker Brothers), so I will concede Marvel's cosmic supremacy for now.

Marvel's mystics include Dr. Druid and Brother Voodoo, but I think I may have just proved your point. :)

Rep to you sir!

This.

I LOVE Marvel and DC, but Nova and GotG (not to mention the events) were what made reading comics a real pleasure for me. Cosmic Marvel to me is the best setting, but that's just my humble opinion.

I read Green Lantern, Secret Six, Birds of Prey, Sirens and magic-related titles, but I really prefer Marvel. Spider-man, Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Avengers, Thunderbolts and a few X-men series (when they are good) really help when I am waiting on cosmic stuff to come out, but they are great in their own way.

I wish there was a poll for being a fan of both, but in both Heroclix and comics, I get more excited for Marvel with very little exception (anything my Gail Simone seems to be it, really).

Moon Knight is obviously a Bats clone. (as much as Batman is a Zorro/Shadow/Lone Ranger clone.)

Once you get past that, what makes Moon Knight interesting is his origin and backstory, He's either the avatar of an Egyptian god, or a brutal ex mercenary/CIA spook driven insane by guilt over his actions. resulting in multiple personality disorder among other problems.

DC's important characters are too caught up in "Legacies," Superhero "families," and reverting back to what the characters used to be. Marvel does that too, but I feel like they're at least a little more capable of permanent change or some interesting crossover events.

2. Was the Human Torch really doing...like...ANYTHING of importance in the last decade? If so, I must have blinked.

Was going to write a paragraph or two on why, but no matter how big or small the reason is, it just comes down to a personal opinion in the end.
The poll results tell the real story, Marvel must be doing something right. Neca are also starting to realise the Marvel/Dc fan base ratio as we are getting back to the two Marvel and one Dc set a year.
Makes sense to tap into the cash cow, it should make everyone happy. The company makes more money and the little brother gets it's day in the sun. It's a win win situation.

DC all the way for me. The only Marvel I read from the rack is Deadpool.

Better characters? Don't get me wrong I like Thor and Doc Strange, and I'm not knocking anyone's taste, but for me Marvel works a lot better in film than it does in print. (Print X-men has about 5o years of convoluted backstory, non-Raimi Spiderman is an emo git.)
Superman, THE superhero template. Wonder Woman my favorite embodiment of hope/fanservice. The G*ddamned Batman, who could outwit Mephisto on a bad day, let alone anyone else in the Marvel Universe. I'm not even touching on the rest of DC continuity, the "trinity" alone cannot hope to be matched for pure iconography by anything in the Marvel U.

Better writing? Really? Care to match the Clone Saga, Secret Invasion, One More Day up against Kingdom Come, Batman Year One, Crisis, The Dark Knight Returns, Sandman, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing, Simone or late 80's Wonder Woman, or even entertaining pulpery like Blackest Night?
Yes, there's plenty of crap from DC too, but the Amazons Attacks and the Countdowns tend to be overshadowed by the classics DC has put out.
