The Exiles

Arsenalroy2k here, and welcome back to the latest edition of Comic Accurate! As we get closer and closer to the release of Giant Size X-Men, this week we visit a band of mutants and superheroes known as The Exiles. An X-Team so out there, they're in another universe entirely.

Back in 2001, creators Judd Winick and Mike McKone created The Exiles. Which was essentially Marvel meets "Sliders" and "Quantum Leap". Characters from across the multi-verse are plucked from their varying timestreams to fix things that went wrong.

Over the run of the series/franchise, writers like Jeff Parker, Chris Claremont and Chuck Austen also tried their hand at the title with... mixed results, putting it nicely. But it was writer Tony Bedard's run on the book that's the focus of this installment of Comic Accurate. Mainly "World Tour".

See, in issues #69-83 of Exiles, the X-Men enemy Proteus took over the body of Exiles member Mimic and prompted the team (Blink, Sabretooth and Morph) to chase him across the Multiverse. Along the way, the team picked up several new members from outside the standard 616 Marvel Universe (Power Princess, Longshot and Spider-Man 2099). Eventually they stopped Proteus by imprisoning him in Morph's body and making Proteus forget who he really is. With that said, here's our lineup:

(Attack) Omnimorph: Morph can use Perplex, but he can target only himself.

I know. Ultimate Sabretooth isn't Age of Apocalypse Sabretooth. But until we get an official Heroclix version of "Mr. Creed", I'm opting to make do with the closest approximation I can get as both AoA and Ultimate are alternate versions of the regular Sabretooth. If you want to use another version, I won't fault you any.

Anyways, that roster comes out to 469 points. If we used the Vets of Blink and Sabretooth, they'd come out to 497 exactly, but there's a method here. Put Auto Regen on both Morph and Sabretooth while you put Lunge on Spider-Man 2099. Now we're up to 498.

But if this isn't your cup of tea, the team went through a slight change after the World Tour was all done. With Proteus gone, Power Princess opted to leave. As she left, Psylocke took her place. Additionally, Heather Hudson, formerly a part of the team as Sasquatch, returned to the team in a role of coordinator from their headquarters.

xp060 V Psylocke

So all we have to do is take the 498 point team we just built, take off the feats and Power Princess and presto! Psylocke and Sasquatch can replace them putting the group right back at 498 points. Just keep Heather on her first click.

Now there's other lineups we could make, if we want to just keep using substitutes for the Exiles versions (like for the roster to Volume Two for example). But unfortunately, swapping in these close approximations can only carry us so far as former members like Beak, Thunderbird and the female versions of Sunfire and Namor who don't have a close analog don't exist. And good luck trying to put together the New Exiles. Putting that group together would be as big a headache as one got from reading that terrible book.

Those should be it for the lineups from the main series that we can build.

Well, hold on. That might not actually be true.

There is... one... more comic based Exiles team we can build. Here it is:

That group, based as close upon issue #85 as I could get, comes out to 400 points on the nose! And this should go without saying, but you may want to play this in a tournament with only ranges of zero allowed. Or better yet, play it to taunt anyone that still complains about Wolverine being everywhere. Seriously, it's 2011. Time to let it go. All the cool kids nowadays complain about Deadpool being everywhere.

And speaking of letting go, that's all for us in this edition of Comic Accurate! Next time, we visit everyone's favorite club of "elite" X-villains. Complete with a special guest!

Nice I read most of the various Exiles series, with the first volume's Winnick and Bedard runs being the best.

A while ago I tracked down Spiderman 2099, Power princess, and Longshot just to be able to build this team. I had most of the rest, or at least decent subs.

I liked the Exiles books a lot.

Great article. Exiles was one of my favorite comics.
Love the Deadpool is everywhere reference.

Hmm... I've run exiles more than once. Very limited success but I did enjoy playing them.

I think you missed out on Clarice. The LE may not have the X-Men TA but it buys you some pts for feats.

Love the Exiles. It makes me sad that is ended and in with such a whimper. I hope they do make Sabretooth/Mr. Creed. I would love a Holocaust, Namora, Magnus, and Thunderbird too. It may even be time for a remake here and there.
I used the LE Victor Creed when I make this team. Auto-regen makes him pretty decent. I guess you could sub in the WOS Wolverine dial for him.

Here is a brief summary of an eXiles scenario we used to play off-and-on.

WARNING: The scenario is best played by players that make decisions quickly.

We used to play this at 300 points, but it can work for higher points too.

Build restrictions: The Build requirement is exactly 6 characters (no generics, no cardboard) at 300 points. When one is defeated, you may swap in a figure +- 10 points.

One of the characters holds the Tallus. When a figure on your force is defeated, at the start of the controlling players next turn replace that figure with one of nearly the same point value +- 10 points. That figure is placed in any one of the squares that is range 2 away from the character holding the Tallus. If the Tallus holder is defeated, give the Tallus immediately to one of the other friendly figures.

I really miss the Exiles. It was really fun to see some of the alternate universe characters show up in an official way. I stopped reading at about the time Psylocke showed up on the team. It just seemed to lose whatever it was that made it so great. It's still a great team to play in 'clix though.

Great article for a fun and awesome group of characters. Reminds me that I've been working on a custom of the female version of Sunfire made out CD Green Flame/Fire. I need to take her off the back burner and finish her :)

Exiles was a great book under Winick or Bedard, like Blue_Shield noted. It was essentially "Sliders" in comic form, and easily my favorite X-book to read while in college. When Claremont came along and messed with things, the book went downhill and never recovered.

I loved the exiles so much. I didnt even care that claremont seemed to have lost his touch. One of the few marvel titles that I'm still a fan of. Was dissapointed when the last run was cancelled so early on.:(

Exiles is another of those books that brought me back into comics. Never really followed the book into New Exiles.

I would love to see the characters I considered the core six in clix form for modern age:

Blink
Mimic (made)
Morph (made)
Sunfire
Thunderbird
Nocturne

I hope we get them soon.

I play Exiles a bit, typically only in 300. In fact I plan on playing them this week. My build is:

Morph + Entangle
Mimic + Protected
R Blink (only one I have)

When I have played its done rather well, you have to push Morph to his second click, and keep Mimic on his first click and after the first few turns I use Blink mostly as a healing battery. I like the team as its pretty much the core of the group until Claremont took over (which is when I stopped caring).

I was hoping for a little Exiles love for this set, I didn't expect much because of the theme, but I was hoping for a Mariko or a Thunderbird or I was half expecting an AoA sub-theme.

Alas, she left the team by the point World Tour took place.

Not playing Mimic on an Exiles team just feels like sacrilege to me.

MU020 Morph
MU021 Mimic
SV034 Nocturne
MM085 Longshot
MM056 Blink
391

Not as effective against modern teams, but used to be you could have some serious fun with this team.

At least Deadpool isn't on 4 different teams (he's only on 2, and that's counting the defunct Deadpool Corps). When he is, then you can complain about him being everywhere!

Ouchmaker
03/08/2011, 06:27
Seen as most teams are going up to 498 points in this article, one could add Infiltrate to Morph to make it a full 500. He's most likely playing tie-up, and so for 2 points he can make a free-breakaway to his Charge and move to a position where he's keeping more people next to him, preferably pushing him to a Plasticity click with Combat Reflexes for more annoyance.

Nice article! Makes me want to play an exiles team again. I probably will not win much though...

Great article for a fun and awesome group of characters. Reminds me that I've been working on a custom of the female version of Sunfire made out CD Green Flame/Fire. I need to take her off the back burner and finish her :)

I made a mod of her years ago, I think I used AW Aurora's body, AW Echo's head and AW Psylocke's hands. I also made a Sabretooth out of a Ultimate Sabretooth, repainted with some minor changes.

I played the Wolverine team once. I actually did quite well. Took down a Thanos team and a Skrull team.

03/08/2011, 09:36
I use Shatterstar for Creed, still haven't found the best way to mix in Psylocke as I try to stick to 400 points. The team really needs Spidey to have lunge and Morph to have Nanobots or some way of healing.

Heh, thatd be me.

I LOVED this book(before Claremont destroyed it, !@#$%#), so its a favorite team of mine to play. I always play Mimic though, as hes my favorite character from the series. I dont have a Longshot, been looking to pick one up forever.

I do seem to get crushed every time I play it, but its still fun.:p

I loved the Exiles until the time when Bedard introduced the stupid little bug things as the engineers of the space-time issues that caused the Exiles to be dislodged from their respective times and the power behind the Timebroker. I was like "Really? Little bug things?"

So my love turned into "like", but I stayed with it because of the characterization and real potential of the premise.

...

Then Claremont took over... I'm not ashamed to say that after the Exiles/Excalibur "Die by the Sword" limited series and reboot of the series into a "Claremont's All-Stars Can Do Whatever They Whatever They Want" series, I stopped reading it and never looked back.

I played an Exiles team on my very first tournament. I've played teams from the last Exiles series too.. but I'd have to say my favorite Exiles based team was my Weapon X team from the Exiles series...

90 MU032 Gambit
158 MU012 Colossus
81 WS020 Firestar
89 AW076 Iron Man
40 UI005 Sabretooth
38 SN073 Daredevil
~~~~~~~~
496
Can also sub a Maverick or random She-Hulk if needed. Always a fun team. Seems random and it's a lot of pieces that I normally wouldn't play together. A few new pieces coming out all help me update this team too.. there's a lot from HoT I don't have that would go well in here too I bet.
You put up an exiles team without Mimic or Nocturne? BLASPHEMY!!!
On a side note i've played several variations on Exiles teams and i've found if you put nanobots and auto regen on Mimic he's a huge pain to take down.
Funny. . . for a team that gets a lot of flak here on the realms, it seems that plenty of folks like the Exiles all the same.
The Exiles team I'd play in 500 points (no feats) :
MU021 Mimic 148
SV089 Power Princess 107
FF096 Spider-Man 92
MM207 Clarice Ferguson 44
MM085 Longshot 66
SV035 Nocturne 43
That would both be fun to play and mildly competitive (meaning it could win battles in a not-too-optimised environment).
Morph doesn't make the cut, but I'd rather field Mimic.
There was a competing team (referred to as "Weapon X") that was originally lead IIRC by the AoA Victor Creed.
There were cute twists to the Weapon X/Exiles teams: Blink (from AoA) led the Exiles, and the implication was that it was a mistake that Illyana ended up on Exiles while the gentler-hearted Colossus ended up on Weapon X.
