Just thought i'd like to state my opinion about faction teams. I think they're awesome. They just make the game more fun to play and personally, i don't play with anything but faction teams (except sealed booster tourney's of course). But what's funny is, all these guys out here posting their "faction" teams and asking a review. Well my review is, it's not a faction team if ALL of your guys aren't of a specific faction. That's it, plain and simple. Granted, there are a million crossovers but they're still not part of the team. I'm not saying it's wrong to put those people in those teams, it appears in the comics, it's cool. Just don't call it a freakin' faction team, how about that. I laugh when people are like:

Check out my roxors brotherhood team:
V magneto
E juggs
E pyro
R shield medic
R Aim medic
E black panther
R black cat

That makes me chuckle heartily. Har Har Har. I love playing faction teams with my friends, just seems cooler to me. I hate playing all one faction and having someone pull gay stuff like not being able to make a team without a medic or black panther. Just my two cents. Flame away.

wolfman116:

I agree. Putting Black Panther and Black Cat on a "Brotherhood team" and claiming to have a Brotherhood theme seems wrong. Sure, the team is legal and useable in most tournaments, but it isn't really reasonable (for a theme).

On the other hand, there are many "non-Brotherhood" figures that could reasonably appear on a Brotherhood team. For example, Colossus became a follower of Magneto (in comics!). He became a member of the Acolytes (spelling?). It could be reasonable for Magneto to influence Colossus into working with other Brotherhood members. I have read many comics where a "hero" was on a "Bad guy team" for a while. The hero usually comes to his senses and leaves the villains after a while.

Medusa and Thundra have both been on a villain team (fearsome four?) and on the Fantastic four team. You could reasonably use them with Fantastic Four (as shown on Medusa's figure). Or, you could reasonably use them with Fearsome four members (when they are all created). The Fearsome Four that I am thinking of included Wizard, Trapper and Sandman although my memory of the team may be slightly off.

I don't see why using Medusa with Wizard, Trapper and Sandman could not be seen as a "theme" team. Again, I realize that Wizard and Trapper haven't been made yet. I look forward to when they are made, and the point is still valid.

Beast doesn't have an Avengers logo (yet). But, he was on the Avengers team for many years. If you were to tell me that a team of Capt. America, Scarlet Witch, Beast, Hawkeye and IronMan was not a Theme team, then I would tell you to GO READ A COMIC.. Cause you don't know your comics very well.

All of this, is of course for aesthetic purposes only since it doesn't have anything to do with Heroclix rules. But, many comic book fans enjoy themes. They also enjoy the flexibility of incorporating favorite characters and variations to that theme.

By the way,

I think that we (and many others) agree that a themed team adds enjoyment to the game. I also think that this (extremely minor) issue of "what defines a theme" is subjective. I believe anything "reasonable" is good. But, my reason and other peoples reason will vary.

So, Here's to Expanding the Brotherhood!

"attention all mutants.....:D

Well, I was hoping more people would speak up on their view of "themed" teams. I see it come up as a sub-issue on many threads. So, I would like to see it have it's own thread.

What do you people think?

And, do you have any other thoughts, wolfman116?

Well, I'll give my thoughts...

I think I'd say I agree with wolfman116 on a basic level, and possibly on all levels, but I'm not sure where he draws that line for 'theme' teams.

There are many things that people call "theme" that I disagree with, namely with Doombots, Black Cat, Black Panther, Medics, Vulture, Firelord, Robin, etc.
I.e.
"My Fantastic Four Team" with 3 doombots
"SHIELD Team" with Firelord and Vulture
"Bla Bla Team" with Black Cat but not Spiderman
"Doom Team" with Robin and Invisible Girl

If people want to play those teams, that's fine, but it doesn't make them 'theme', 'team' or 'comic book flavored' in my book.

This is not to say that I think every member must have the same team logo on the base to be 'theme', just that it should have some flavor backed by the comics. If someone says that they have a Fantastic Four team with Spiderman, I'm certainly going to agree with them. A "Sinister Sindicate" team that has V Doc Ock still qualifies as "theme" in my mind, even if he doesn't have the team symbol. Using Captain America, Black Widow, or Quasar with SHIELD also follows theme in my book. Logan certainly has his place on an X-Men team, etc etc.

There are plenty of teams that I would consider 'theme' that have very few of the same team symbols. If someone had a "Secret Wars Team" that only used characters from the Secret Wars, I would certainly consider it a theme team.

Anyways, my 02 cents

I tried playing many theme teams but most of those teams lost versus teams that were built to win.

Hence I started making 'winning teams', I win but I still prefer the coolness of real theme teams.

I have a question on the team first posted here. Why are you using R-Black Cat and not E? You could drop Black Panther to R and get E-Black Cat and get probability control, too. You could also drop one of the medics, upgrade the other and use the rest of the points for E-Black Cat and still have E-Black Panther, too.

D_Ronin,

I have played "themed" teams in tournys several times. Not all themed teams are competative (yet). But, I have had sucess with the Brotherhood and Synister Syndicate (2nd place and 1st place). Now granted, I allow some modifications to my "theme". I add V. Whirlwind to the Brotherhood because he fits so well tatically. As far as the "theme" goes, he is evil and he is a mutant. So, I just have Magneto recruit him (like so many other mutants have been). To me, it fits the "theme".

I expect that "themed" teams will become more competative with each expansion. As team members are added, holes will be filled and options will be increased. Well, I hope they become more competative, anyway.
