The Starjammers

Hi, folks. With Giant Size X-Men we can now build a plethora of X-related teams around the figures in the set. One of these X-related teams, is one that's way overdue for being completed. It's everyone's favorite band of space-pirates: The Starjammers.

And while we might not figure out exactly what stars they have jammed, we will figure out how to build two differing teams of said space pirates. One a little older, one a little more modern.

Before we start out with this article, I need to make an apology. Turns out there was an error in our last article about the Hellfire Club. I had stated that Fat Harry enjoys the entire menu of a Carl's Jr. This was incorrect, as it is Jack In The Box that he enjoys the entire menu of. My mistake and I hope we can all move past this and onto the utterly serious business of comic books and Heroclix.

The Starjammers first appeared in uncanny X-Men #107 back in 1977, but it wasn't until 1990 that they finally got a two issue miniseries that shone the spotlight on them. Now the core lineup of the Starjammers generally consists of Corsair, Hepzibah, Raza and the newly made Ch'od, whose name never fails to make me giggle. But poop jokes aside, here's the build:

cm208 LE Major Chistopher Summers

cm018 V Hepzibah

And for the record, I went with the LE of Corsair because it's only six points more than the vet and you get some Willpower and an extra click of RCE. Both of which he needs. And these four figures come out to 241 points. It's kinda scary that if I busted Raza, Corsair and Hepzibah down just a bit, then I could fit them all easily onto a 200 point team, but that's not what we're going to go for. See, in that two-part miniseries, The Starjammers were joined by some friends. One of whom was new member Carol Danvers. The former Ms. Marvel had undergone a dramatic change during the Brood Saga and became Binary.

sv094 U Binary

Also along for the ride were Lilandra and the X-Men's own Professor X.

sv085 U Majestrix Lilandra

Range: 6 :bolt:
Points: 60

(Damage) I've Learned Your Secrets: Professor X can use Outwit. Once per turn, when he uses Outwit to counter a standard power, he may immediately use Outwit again, but only to counter a power of the same color.
(Special) In Contact with Cerebro: If Professor X is in your starting area, he can draw lines of fire and count Range for his Speed, Attack, and Damage powers from the square of any friendly character with whom he shares a keyword.

As usual, it bears mentioning that there is an Xavier figure that has the Starjammers keyword. It's the experienced version from Infinity Challenge/Universe. And he's all right, but let's be honest here: We want to use the new pieces. It's okay though, because in the story Xavier was sidelined most of the time anyways. So you can have the new figure sit in your starting area and use his SP to give Binary or Hepzibah a useful bump by having the Professor use his Outwit through them since they're the only figures he shares a keyword with.

And with these seven figures, our build has now come out to 552 points. 48 points left over for feats. I'd go with Contingency Plan for Lilandra, Unstoppable for Ch'od, Auto Regen for Raza, Protected for Binary and Spotter for both Corsair and Hepzibah. We're up to 599. A decent build that will very likely be annihilated in a standard tournament.

But there's another lineup we can play. Not a more competitive one, just a different one. Over the last several years, the Starjammers have changed. Xavier went back to the X-Men, Lilandra went back to leading the Shi'ar, Carol went back to Earth to re-join the Avengers, Corsair was murdered, Hepzibah got stranded on Earth and Raza ended up getting taken over by a Symbiote. That's right, the only original Starjammer left was a big green Ch'od. So who joined the group? Former X-Men members Havok, Polaris and Rachel Grey (nee Summers).

ul093 U Phoenix
Team: X-Men
Range: 8 :bolt::bolt:
Points: 86

m-winga-fistd-shieldg-starburst101116310101629915299153881438814277132KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO

The Starjammers also got one more new member: Shi'ar warrior Korvus. Now he doesn't exist in Heroclix, but there's a close enough approximation that does.

sv009 V Shi'ar Admiral
Team: S.H.I.E.L.D.
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 40
Keywords: Shi'ar, Soldier
m-boota-fistd-shieldg-starburst891529815287152871428714278141KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO

It's a Shi'ar with Blades, Charge and Combat Reflexes! Sure he's missing that giant paddle/sword he used to lug around, but still... With Ch'od, Havok, Polaris, Rachel and our de facto Korvus, this team comes out to 347. Now I could try to get this up to 400, but I've got something better in mind. Since this is the team that was around during War of Kings, why not just have them fight Emperor Vulcan and his insane queen Deathbird?

gx045 E Vulcan
Team: Power Cosmic

(Attack) Omega-Level Energy Absorbtion: Modifiy Vulcan's attack and damage by +1 for each time he was targeted by a ranged combat attack since your last turn.
(Damage) Sway, Darwin, Petra: Vulcan can be used Incapacitate, Perplex and Quake.

xp087 U Deathbird

Those two come out to 345. So whether you decide to max out the 10% of feats on both teams, go at it cardboard-less, or throw in some other War of Kings characters like The Inhumans, Kree, Guardians of the Galaxy, more Shi'ar or whatever, that's up to you folks. For added space-faring fun, try playing on the Supernova space map, or throwing in BFC's like Low Gravity. See who wins!

That's it for this edition of Comic Accurate. Next time: We visit an X-Team overseas!

yep. the ultimates phoenix is the only playable version of Rachel.

great line ups...especially the 347/345 match up :)

althought I'dve put nanobots on someone to represent sikorsky (in the past i've done that with Raza)

and I always choose the LE Major....much better fig :)

I agree with all but the representation of Korvos. He has a sword that has Phoenix Force and I would go for someone more powerful., I just hope they make him.

The new Starjammers have made me want to go after some old ones, I may have to.

Ch'od needs range! Ch'od needs range!

If the classic SJ's are pretty bad, keep in mind they mostly fought the Brood and Deathbird with any effectiveness. Any time they were able to defeat the Imperial Guard, they had X-Men help. I kind of wonder if the cheap lineup before you add Binary, Xavier, and Lilandra could even take out Gladiator.

Havok and Polaris should have modern age versions too... hopefully they can come out within the year:cool:

You wouldn't think it from the keywords, but yes.

I suspect that when they were compiling the big retroactive keywords document someone didn't look at the figure, and gave her Jean's keywords.

I do wish they'd rectify it.

Or give us a new Rachel...

Great article!

May i recommend "sidekick" on Vulcan & Deathbird. For 10 pts, she can share her hubby's 18 def, with esd!

anyone remember Cho'd's white furry pets name? Im thinking of modding him onto Cho'd.

Exclixior!

was a bit miffed that they didn't turn up in this set.. Havok appeared in an Age of Apocaylypse story, where he was a mutant prefect along with his brother Cyclops. also, Polaris was one of the x-men turned into a horsemen of the apocaylypse, iirc she was pestilence?

also noted that whilst this thread used the old unique ult phoenix to represent rachel summers, the only actual rachel summers codename: hound is the one in the days of future past action pack. she's not playable. ever.

Considering that the sculpt is the same on that Phoenix and Hound, I think we can safely say they are both Rachel.

Pappa needs a new Havok! And a Grey too (Nate and Rachael). Would anyone mind if I rip Citizen V off the dial and put Corsairs on there? Cause that's how'd I design him.
