Clix reviews you never thought you'd see-Changeling

Howdy! For those of you who missed the first part, go here: http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30840

Now, those of you not in the know, I'm doing reviews for the lesser talked about figs in the game, some from DC, (like our green skinned fellow here), and some from Marvel. Next time, we'll be seeing a review on two heroic best buds, who swipe Oreos and saw an infamous one-punch, before checking out an acrobatic redhead from Marvel, and then a killer schoolteacher from DC (Kudos to those who figure out the character clues!). As for an explanation on Gar's clue (whic can be seen in the prevous review), well he fell in love with Fellow Teen Titan Terra, who had Earth related powers and turned out to be a nutjob, and is now hanging out with Flamebird, another former Titan (who thankfully, is fairly sane).

Now then, there are five things that stand out about Gar Logan: 1. He's a Titan on every single one of his dials, so if you have another Titan on your team (or have a Legion member, when they eventually come out), use that as an advantage for a quick heal or an easy assist. 2. He has shape change (to simulate his power to turn into any animal, presumably) on practically every single click of his dial in all three versions. The power is basically the Skrull ability (if you get hit, roll a dice, and if it hits six, you take no damage), so if you're dice is hot, don't be afraid to use it in hope of avoiding damage. 3. Like fellow Titans Hawk and Dove, he has a "regular" first click, so you'll want to get him on his second one ASAP (in fact, like Dove, he also starts with a zero damage). 4. He has an infamous rainbow dial. In other words, practically each click has a different power and a different use. Not exactly the easiest character to remember, so don't charge around blindly with him, as you may lose a good click. 5. He has the dolphin symbol on his movement. What's that mean? Hindering water terrain is no problem for him, he can go through it without a hitch (does that mean Batman doesn't know how to swim?)

Now then, the rookie Changeling, right out of the acting biz (shouldn't he be called Beast Boy?) and into the Titans (and if you believe those are real, the same one that buddied around with Kitty Pryde in the Titans/X-Men crossover) for a cost of 31 points, and has five clicks of life. He starts off normal, with average stats, and gains a slight boost on his second click, gaining super strength (and a strength of 10), a damage of 2, a defense jump of three to 15, and small movement up from a 6 to a 7. This is probably his best click, so you'll probably want to do your best to stay on it as best you can, so he can hit nicely with the option of hitting harder with an object, Once he gets hit, his speed goes down to a 6, his strength is also knocked down one, to a 9, his strength drops to a 12, he also trades in his super strength (He's a Grizzly Bear?) for Leap/climb (Maybe a monkey?), and keeps his 2 damage. Not bad, but I think his previous click is better. Next click, his stats all drop by one, and he tosses out leap/climb for force blast (no idea what animal this could be). His final click, he loses shape-change, and all of his stats drop one, except strength, which drops three, from an 8 to a 5.

Next, Gar gets a jump to his experienced version, where he flirts with his other female teammates before falling in love with fellow teammate Terra, who turns traitor on the team, and shows her true colors as a sociopath, eventually dying. Not exactly lucky in love, is he? and then later he has to go through the Crisis on Infinite Earths (although on the plus side, atleast he wasn't a Legion member during that. Yikes!). At any rate, this version weighs in with a bit of a price jump at 43 points. What do you get for the expense? Well his second click now has super strength and toughness (Probably a gorilla?), plus the ever present shape-change, and he keeps those powers in his third click, before trading super strength and toughness in for leap-climb in his fourth click, ad then switching that in for force blast before going on his next, extra sixth click, where he loses all of his powers. numbers on the dial wise, it looks exactly the same as the rookie, except for the last click, where he keeps the speed of 4 and damage of 1, but drops his numbers for strength and defense by one. He's an improvement over his rookie though, due to his powers, but you'll still want to keep him on his second and third clicks in my opinion, as he has the best damage dealing and defense saving abilities in these.

Finally, we come to the Veteran Changeling (who, if I remember right, is calling himself Beast Boy again). Gar is over Terra, has had a movie career, and is now hanging out with the slightly ditzy (but not horribly so), but thankfully not sociopathic Betty Kane, the heroine (and fellow Titan) Flamebird. No romantic sparks yet, but hey, anything can happen, and at least she won't kill the team. Anyway, His point cost has once again jumped up a little bit, as he now costs 53 points. Is it worth it? In my opinion, yes. His stats are slightly improved, and his powers and paced out a little better. His first click is the same as it always has been, but his stats jump to a 8-10-15-2 in his second click, and he gains charge and toughness to go along with his ever present shape-change (so he's a rhino, I guess?). His next click goes to a 7-9-13-2, he keeps toughness and shape-change, and switches his charge for super-strength. His next click, his stats go to a 6-8-12-2, and drops his super-strength but keeps his toughness (maybe an elephant?). His next click, he loses his powers except shape-change for more monkey madness with leap-climb (So if the mustached and red wearing Dr.Strange was fighting him, would that make him Mario?) and his stats go to 5-5-11-1. His final click, he loses one point on each of his stats, except damage, where he keeps the one, still has shape-change, and trades his leap/climb in for force blast.

All in all, Gar is a nice battle support piece and Titan healer (but don't go overboard, due to his rainbow dial), and he's relatively cheap, however, unfortunately the rainbow dial, while a nice representation of his powers, also makes him unpredictable and at times risky, although out of all of his version, his veteran is the most reliable, and probably the best bet to use. Still, in lower point games he's pretty useful, and even in regular games he can pick up an object and use it to back-up another fighter or protect a support piece, and due to their currently low numbers, he's very helpful to a Titans themed team (and he's especially essential if you want to form a Wolfman/Perez Titans team!). Over all, if you have the points to spare and have the Veteran version handy, give Gar a spin, he may surprise you, since his swiss army-esque powers can come in handy in a pinch, but be careful, as is powers fluctuate from almoist click to click, and remember, all of his versions probably work best in their second clicks (and in the Exp and Vet versions, the third click also becomes useful), However if you don't have the points, or are eyeing some different pieces (like the Huntress, or Booster Gold) than it's ok to pass him over.

This will end my review, feel free to share your thoughts, ideas, or character strategies!

I think you misunderstand how Shapechange works... it is not like Super-Senses. I quote from your post:

"2. He has shape change (to simulate his power to turn into any animal, presumably) on practically every single click of his dial in all three versions. The power is basically the Skrull ability (if you get hit, roll a dice, and if it hits six, you take no damage), so if you're dice is hot, don't be afraid to use it in hope of avoiding damage."

Changeling's Shapechange die roll is made BEFORE the attacker's dice rolls, but after the attack declaration is made. If a "6" is rolled, the attacker may still chose a different target (and does not necessarily waste his attack).

First, I appreciate the effort in this review, I really do.

As a small amount of criticism, the bulk of the review is a description of his dials. I can see this myself by looking at the warriors section.

To make your reviews more interesting, try to tell us how you would use the piece. Who does the piece work well with in your opinion? Should I push this character or keep them on a certain click? Do they need a taxi, or can they handle things on their own? What is the real strength and weakness of the piece?

These kinds of anaylsis will help boost the effectiveness and interest level in your reviews.

Again, I thank you for the effort in reviewing some of the lesser played pieces, I think every piece is playable if you can figure it out.

Thanks

From your clues, you're refering to the infamopus team of Blue 'n Gold, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold! Yay me, who has been reading JLA forever!

And, for what it's worth, I've bene wondering about Changeling for a while. Any real suggestions on how to use him? Any preference on which version is better?

The duo you refer to are Blue & Gold, Blue Beetle and Boster Gold that is. I assume the acrobatic red head is Black Widow, and the killer school teacher's gotta be Huntress.
