But when it comes to locale, sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees. We're here to help you make smart decisions when it comes to Heroclix real estate.

When you get right down to it, Heroclix is a game of 'What If?', where we can play out the epic battles of the comic books or test out our dream matchups. If Spider-Man and Superman fought Batman and Iron Man, who would win? Well, are they in Metropolis, Gotham City, or New York? What armor is Iron Man wearing? Did Batman have time to plan? For simplicity's sake, sometimes you have to just eliminate all the variables. That's when you toss them in the Arena.

Based on the death matches held in the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk stories, this simple stadium does away with all the distractions and just focuses on the fight. Unlike Krakoa[/URL ([URL]http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=311058)], there are no special rules, no water, no blocking, and only a minimal amount of hindering and elevated terrain (just enough so as not to rob figures like Batman of an essential element of their power sets.

The Elevated terrain sits in each of the four corners. Any figures here are likely to become spectators, as they're too far from the heart of the battle to provide any combative contribution. Characters with long range may eventually find targets as opponents are forced to overstep the line of scrimmage, but for the most part dedicating major attackers to this task is going to be a losing strategy.

Shadow King may have great line of sight, but his 8 range is just shy of the action.

As for the hindering, it takes the form of two clumps diagonally facing each other. Here, your ranged figures will find a better position for attacking, though will have little protecting them if they lack Stealth. In a 4 player game, these positions can become volatile as players are forced to hide their supporting cast in already occupied posts.

For the most part, this map will drive all combat toward the center as figures cross quickly from one isolated fight to another as opportunities arise. Most squares on the map have little to differentiate them tactically, and so figures capable of quick and simple repositioning will find few reasons not to. The biggest interference is entirely transient, in the form of other characters who will block line of fire and congest movement.

This is not a map to play it safe on. The arena is designed to encourage balls-to-the-walls initiative and risky attacks. A map like this should reward you for tearing it up with the biggest bricks in the game. And therein lies the biggest fault of the Arena map: you're better off here with a long range fighter than most of the big bricks the game has to offer.

<img src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80851/HCRealms.com/201104/Mini-%20Arena2.jpg" class="imagecenter" width="800px" />
It's hard to get a real man-to-man round of fisticuffs in with so many spectators! Green Scar delivers a finishing blow to Absorbing Man, while Bishop, Fabian Cortez, and Living Monolith stand by to intervene.

To be fair, it's not really the Arena's fault. Consider, for a moment, a change in the core rules of the game, where changes in terrain benefitted a ranged figure more than a hand-to-hand fighter. Let's imagine that a close combat brick could tear apart a figure it had a clear, straight path to (like GSX's Juggernaut), and a ranged combatant would use careful positioning to keep obstructive terrain between them and their opponents. In this scenario, the Arena would favor close combat because there'd be nothing for a ranged figure to use as cover.

Due to the way the game was designed, a map with more terrain features will almost always benefit close combat, as your figure carefully keeps cover as he moves toward the ranged combatant. A wide open field means a bevvy of available targets, and gives the advantage of the Arena to the wrong archeotype: long range.

Entering the Arena? Here's how to equip yourself:

-Long Range. 10 is good, but to rule in the Arena, 12 is best. There's nothing here to block your shot, so only the fastest figures will be able to base you without getting shot on the way in.

-Multiple Targets, since you can see so much anyway.

-The ability to break away with ease and/or ignore adjacency. With little terrain, the number one thing that will slow you down is other characters. Figures with Plasticity are especially handy, as you can use adjacency against your opponent, then leave with ease.

-Barrier will be your only protection as your close combatants advance.

-Swarms have the upper hand here, as a centerpiece can easily get ganged up on with nowhere to hide. Use your less essential figures to cover for the key pieces.

-Galactus. Seriously. He'd reign here.

So does the Arena come out on top?

Theme: 3/5
It takes its cue from comics and gets all the visuals right, but the Arena fails to re-create that 'trapped in a duel to the death' feel that its name promises.
Clarity: 5/5
With only two types of terrain and simple graphics, there's absolutely nothing to be unclear about.
Tactical Impact: 2/5
If a map's impact on tactics is measured by how much it contributes, then this map would be a flat out 1. I only raised it to a 2 because most teams assume they'll have SOME form of cover available, and finding yourself out in the wide open can really throw you off.
Balance: 2/5
At least it's pretty much symmetrical. This map gives all the power to whoever can make the best use of the wide open lines of fire available here.
Terrain Diversity: 1/5
Hindering is minimally present, and elevated terrain is relegated to the corners. Hypertime Flash, with his 20 speed, could move in a straight line and never find his path obstructed.

Overall: 2.6/5
This map is the anti-map, removing all influences a map has on a game. If you have a plan for a team and keep finding that the realities of location are throwing you off, this is your best option. For everyone else, the Arena is best left at home for your next friendly game of 'Big Brick Beatdown'.

Thanks for reading! Until next time, enjoy the scenery!

Worlds Finest likes this map. Played with some Checkmate White Knights, WF actually did pretty good.

I had a feeling this would be this week's review. Well.... this would be THE map to play colossals with.

Since I don't consider myself to be too much of a tactician, I loved the first time I played on this map. I'm more of the run and gun, brute force, try to punch you in the mouth style of play. Rather than perplexing til the cows come home, outwit every power I have, hide in stealth the whole game style of my usual opponents. So when a friend whipped this map out, I was blown away by the size and the openess. Finally a place for my Hulks to wreak some real damage. Suffice to say, I won that match pretty handily.

Totally agree I like this map when i have ranged figures which shouldnt be the case. It'd be nice to have special rules called control disk where all character get battle fury.

Here's the thing: by the books, this map should actually be extremely detrimental to the success of a big beatstick like the Hulk.

If Hulk is up against exactly what you listed above- Perplex, Outwit, Stealth, and a Running Shot figure- this map would make him choose one of those figures to smash; meanwhile, the Outwit figure could cancel one of his powers, the Perplex figure could raise damage on an ally, and the attacker you didn't go for could really lay into you. No matter where you go, the 10 range of Supporting-role powers could see you, and the rest of the opposing team is likely to as well.

If, instead, you had Hulk running through the halls of the Prison map, there'd be only 1 or 2 figures to see and fight him at any given time. You could approach without fear of being fired on until you were already right next to the foe.

I commend you on your victory, but insist that it was IN SPITE of the Arena, and not in the least BECAUSE of it.

No hiding places means a vicious battle where even the slightest mistake can turn the tables. It's a Sharpshooter's dream of course, but I also think it makes a great board for specialty scenarios, like Gladiator Night.

Gladiator Night Scenario. For 2 players at 1000 points each, or 4 players at 600 points.
The glare from the Arena lights prevents all characters from using ranged attacks beyond 4 squares, except Mind Control.
All characters can use Charge. Characters that could use Charge already do not reduce their movement when Charging.

I've played on it only a handful of times despite having it laminated.

Isn't much for a close combat dramatic fight, usually its a mugging from range.
Someone was yearning for their 4 corners map.

When my opponent choose this map, I was sure to use my BFC atlantis rising. My atlantean team ruled the game because of that.

Ooh... I like it!

(And must admit the juvenile geek that I once was in that it makes me think of Arqua fighting Goku in the Celestial Games.)

One of my favourite maps for it's simplicity (although it's sad not having any water). I especially love this map for 4 way matches.

Lots of fun to play with the Warbound event dial! And I also think it would be cool to have an effect that would give everyone battle fury. Even if it's just a roll of the die every turn to see if it happens.

If you're tired of Cosmic Spidey's BS, then get a theme team, pick this map, AND WHOOP HIS BUTT!!!!!!

The Arena should have the special rule: all range values are replaced with 0. All powers require the target be within 4 squares.

Definately a map for me to avoid unless I absolutely happen to be using a force of primarily, as mentioned, long range attackers. Now if we had the tunnels and such beneath the arena...that would be excellent.

That's when you play deep shadows, especially if you've got theme team. Also if your judge allows use of bfcs. The last time I played an I smack you good team, I used deep shadows and his range monsters just wet themselves.

I used this map to defeat a Icons Vet Superman team. I pulled back to one of the Elevated corners and made him come to me. I know my opponent wouldn't just sit there waiting. Once He came in to make an attack he couldn't get far enough away from my retaliation.

I unleashed a counter attack that took him off on his HSS clicks and proceeded to dismantle his team.

I Did have some range on my team to help. I was playing Avengers with NGN Iron Man, AW V WarMachine and some others.

In that case the choice of map helped me a lot.

I LOVE this map, we do a LOT of home game battle Royales and the big open map makes it easy to throw down and go at it.

Lots of good battle memories in the Great Arena.

We played a gladiator type of event on thees maps: 500 pts., Modern Age, only standard objects, 4 players per map. As expected, Range dominated (which was not the intent of those running the event).

Martial Artist teams that could shoot (Bullseye/HoT Cap), and hit hard (Gamora/Iron Fist/Elektra) did well. Nightcrawler, however, found himself with a fat target on his face.

Also, teams of 5 Mindless Ones did fairly well as well...
