http://photos.yahoo.com/darkstormninja New Mod pics

Sorry the pics colors are off - I'll take some better close up pics early next week.

The Herculoids is a sci-fi action based Hanna Barbarra toon that ran in the late 60's and again in the early 80's. The story revolved around the lives of King Zander, Queen Tara, and their son Dorno who were charged with defending their planet from alien invasion. But the real stars were the Herculoids, monstous super-powered beings who fought along side the "humans".

All my Herculoids mods were made from scratch using Sculpty (the only existing piece used are wings from Anihillus for Zok). This was my first attempt at making figs without an existing base fig so I chose the Herculoids because mimicking the animated style was simple... and cause the cartoon was one of my all time favs growing up (right behind Thundarr the Barbarian).

The Herculoids Roster:

Tundro, a rhino/armadillo/triceratops-hybrid looking beast with ten legs and impenetrable hide and a cranial horn that fires exploding rocks! (Rookie Annihilus dial)

Igoo, the super strong simian beast who appears to be made of stone - kind of a cross between big foot and the Thing. (Exp. Thing dial)

Gloop & Gleep, two proto-plastic beings that resemble living silly putty (they actually look just like Shmoo). They were the all purpose shape shifters on the team. (Exp. Mr. Fantastic dial)

Zok, a flying space dragon who could fire lasers from his eyes and tail. (Vet. Human Torch)

If I have it in me this weekend, I may complete the team with mods of the human characters.

Love to get input, please let me know what you think!!

darkstorm, ALL your work is phenomenal in your gallery.

Specifically you're asking about the Herculoids though:

I am impressed. I'd bet they were store bought toys, if I hadn't spent the time browsing your gallery.

Gleep and Gloop belong together on the same base, good choice.

I'm curious what bases you've chosen so far, and if you are going to turn a Captain America into the dad (forget his name)?

Great stuff. The memories are rushing in. These guys and Space Ghost were by far my favorite cartoons when I was a tyke. Thank goodness for Cartoon Network and Boomerang. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to the rest of the family.

Nice work on the figs. My only question is why Annihilus
for the Rhinoid? He can't fly.

I agree about Gleep and Gloop, they were always working
in tandem. I notice that most of the team has the F.F.
affiliation...do you actually get to play with them?

But really, really nice work! (loved Ghost Rider).

Excellent work. Fine sculpting, and VERY close to the animated originals.

Why not a titan base for Igoo, though?

Absolutely astounding.

I think Zok would have been cool in the flying pose with it's tail bellow it (like it's getting ready to fire a laser) but who am I to argue with what is possibly the best mods ever made.

And I thought Ulik and Kurse were untouchable.

Thanks for all the feedback. These guys took a combined total of about 20 hrs to make but were well worth the effort. I taught myself a lot about sculpting during this process through trial and error. An interesting side note: a little sculpty goes a long way - all four figures were made from one small $2.00 package of Sculpty - and I still have extra.

In regards to stats, three of the four Hercuoids do have FF dials which are ideal in terms of accuracy of powers and low point cost (so they can actually be played on a team). However, there are the obvious limitations. That is why I've added some versaltility with Tundro who has Annihilus vet stats (but he's on a grounded base so I gave him Exp. Annihlus point cost of 83). Its also why Zander, Tara and Zorno will be important additions.

Zander will have a vet Bullseye dial and Tara and Dorno will be on one base with a vet AIM medic dail.

Zander=Bullseye? Yep. RCE - Zander was a superb marksmen. In 47 episodes, he never missed a shot with his sling shot and exploding rock ammo. I repeat, EXPLODING rocks - hence the 3 damage. Energy Deflection comes by way of the shield he carried which he could also use boomerange style like Cap does.

Tara and Dorno+ Aim medic? Yep again. Tara was the protective mother figure for the whole team and when she wasn't being captured (70% of the plots revolved around her being captured and rescued) she was doctoring her boys up after a fight. Range of 6 - Her son Dorno has Dad's apptitude for shooting exploding rocks at people and he's modded on the same base to make sure no one talks about his momma.

Oh, forgot to mention that the team I've outlined come to 400pts exactly.

110 - Igoo, exp Thing
83 - Tundro, exp Annihilus
73 - Zok, vet Human Torch
74 - Gloop & Gleep, exp Mr. Fant.
43 - Zander, vet Bullseye
17 - Tara & Dorno, vet AIM Medic

400 - Total points for the team

darkstorm,

You have been busy! Great work once again. Herculoids were one of my favorites too. There is a toy company doing many of the old favorites of Hanna-Barbera cartoon heroes - Herculoids, Thundarr the Barbarian, Dynomutt & Blue Falcon, etc: http://www.toynami.com .
BTW, have you ever thought of working in making toys/action figures? Your skratch builts are top notch!:D

Wow, and I mean wooooow. It has been so long since I have seen that series and yet I can still remember watching it. As for the sculpts, I am totally blown away. I hope that someday I will be almost as good as you are (I'm just starting to try sculpting). Keep up the good work, since you are obviously an expert. For that matter I wish Wizkids would hire you since you are about ten times as good as most of the people who work for wizkids, most notably the person who butchered Psylock.

God! What a breath of fresh air!! I search the net high and low for great customs and most are staggering disappointments, but most stuff I see is, at best, mediocre. Makes such a change to see someone put in the effort, not only are the finishes beautiful, but your eye for accuracy is second to none. (Very rare indeed). More overly, it's unusual to see someone take a base figure without cutting them up and yet at the same time, making it entirely your own.

I am particularly impressed with the Maxx figure (who thought Controller could become that interesting?), Kurse (WOW) and even Ulik (Blastaar and Thing? The most natural choices, yes, but rarely done well). I think it was summed up earlier: OUTSTANDING. Seriously look forward to more of your work soon.

Yeah - I miss this guy. I haven't heard from him since the San Diego ComiCon of 2003. His Kurse mod is still one of my all-time favorites.

Wherever you are darkstorm, this drink's for you!
