Set Wars: Clobberin' Time vs Xplosion

[Gargantua]

Hi there. Once again Gargantua and I take on a big ol' project. With the 10 Heroclix anniversary coming up in 2012, we're doing a set retrospective taking us from Infinity Challenge all the way to, well whatever set is out by the time we get to that.

The idea is simple. We each get a set, round 1 is in chronological order, I get the first set; Gargantua the second and they face off. Next game has Gargantua getting the next set in line vs. my getting the one after and so on. We each get 1000 points in characters. Each character can have one feat and that feat can only be used once per set.

Once all of the winning sets are determined we'll have a round two. Round two will likely involve some tweaking, and probably no longer go chronologically. Additionally older figures may get a cost modification if going up against a newer one. This will probably be something like a 25% cost reduction or something like that.

"That was profoundly disappointing," the Grandmaster sighed.

"I thought you like to win," the Lord of Time said.

"Oh I do, unquestionably. But it is a much about the game! The victory is hollow if there is no challenge in it, and make no mistake, there was no challenge in that last fight."

"I did not have great tools to work with," the Lord of Time justified himself.

"Excuses," Grandmaster harrumphed.

"You will find my next team more worthwhile, I've no doubt."

"Will I?" Grandmaster asked, intrigued despite himself.

"Observe: Moondragon and the White Queen, psychics par excellence. Nightcrawler, the teleporter whose frightening appearance belies the noblest of hearts."

"I thought I was supposed to be impressed."

"The Fantastic Four's heart, the Invisible Girl, the Human Torch and the Thing."

"Your counting skills seem to be deficient."

"Do you want me to go on or don't you?"

"My apologies. Do go on."

"The earth-moving Avalanche, the savage Logan, probability bending thief the Black Cat, and the brilliant but twisted Doctor Octopus."

"I do hope you're not done."

"I have saved the best for last. Blastaar of Baluur, one of the Negative Zone's most powerful denizens and Thor, Asgardian god of thunder."

"Ah ha, this may be a challenge after all. What of those other two?"

"Pawns," the Lord of Time said, dropping an AIM Medic and a Mandroid onto the table. "No one of consequence. But even pawns may have their uses."

"...A true threat but at this juncture while she's adapting to her Phoenix powers....she's a mild threat at best....".

"Not so for the Mandarin, who control 10 rings of immense power; Sauron, man-dinosaur; Deathbird, violent Sh'iar fighter; Silver Samurai, best with a blade; Viper, Hydra's deadliest; Spider-Man....".

"Him again? I had always suspected you lacked imagination. It's nice to find proof of that...and the others?".

"Minions," he says inciting Lord of Time's own words.

"Again there's that lack of imagination, Grandmaster...".

"That would be me, dampening your motor control," the White Queen said.

"Lucky you," Human Torch said, "cause every time we fight you, we always kick your tail from here to next Tuesday."

"Not to be obtuse, but where is here?" the agent in the Mandroid armor pointed out the obvious question.

"I wish Reed were here. He could always tell us." the Invisible Girl said.

"Yeah, but he'd tell us in these fifty-cent words, so we'd be just as clueless when he was done as before he started yappin'."

"Bah, what do you need Reed Richards for? You have the genius of Otto Octavius!" Dr. Octopus pointed out.

"Sure, that's great if we want to all have eight robot arms," the Black Cat observed.

Storm places her hand on her friends shoulders, "For the X-Men, that must be Tuesday."

"Any words of wisdom, Destiny?" Shadowcat asks.

"No. All timelines lead only to darkness. For whose side, I cannot say," she replies.

"Well that's oh-so helpful," Psylocke chimes in, "Tell me why we have you here again?".

"Leave her alone," Deathbird says charging her blades, "We've got better things to do...like kill the Fantastic Four."

"Defeat," Storm says, "That is our goal. Our only goal, Deathbird."

"How is it you humans reply?" Deathbird adds, "Tomato, tomato."

"What's that supposed to mean?" he asks.

Her eyes glow. Hurricane winds gust and lightning strikes.

"Bah!" is all he can say in the high winds. His arms keep him grounded, another uses Deathbird as a shield to the lightning.

"This is futile!" Ororo says stopping the barrage.

"It wasn't a total waste of time," Psylocke says, "At least you kept the idiot quiet for a minute."

"It's the small graces," Ororo smiles back.

It's weird playing only 8 figures here. I feel like I've got a whole field of missing players...

Yeah, I kind of get that too. Maybe we ought to go back to fielding the full teams again after this one. As the figures start to get more expensive, we'll probably have smaller teams for later games.

Not sure how Ock managed to survive that, but I'll accept the gift.

Goddess!" she cried. She tried to summon winds and rains to snuff them, but they were too hot and he just kept them coming.

"Be warned, hothead, you take on one X-Man, you take us all on!" Gambit told Johnny.

"Izzat so? Well, funny thing, but you can say the same thing about the Fantastic Four," the Thing said. "Though if ya wanted ta use that trick o' yours to shut Johnny up fer a couple seconds, ya won't get any complaints outta me."

"Ben!" Sue scolded him.

"Ah, the matchstick knows I'm just jokin' with 'im. Mostly."

"And while they're distracted with their inane banter, I have the chance to finish you," Doc Ock told Deathbird, resuming his attack on her.

"That was my psychic knife," Psylocke adds, "Just a taste of what we X-Men can do."

"Storm! Are you ok?" Shadowcat asks meeting up with her.

"Are you insane, child, stay back?" Storm says.

"No way," Kitty says, "We may not be blood but no matter what Rocky says, we're family and we stick by each other."

"Is that a tear, Ben?" Sue asks.

"Nah," he sniffs, "Must be somethin' in the air."

"I spy with my little eye someone bein' sneaky," the Thing said. As the Mandroid gave him a boost, he flushed Gambit out of his hiding place.

"I don' suppose you'd rather go fight the dinosaur man?" Gambit asked.

"Nah, the FF fights dinosaur men on Tuesdays and Fridays. Wednesdays it's sneaky mutants." the Thing explained, hitting him.

"Not so easy to hit Gambit as you t'ink, eh?" the Cajun said ducking his fireballs.

"For the pitiful Torch perhaps, but for Blastaar, you are an easy target!" the tyrant said, picking Gambit off while he was concentrating on avoiding the Torch's attack.

"An' I guess that leave me ta deal with you, lady," the Thing said, charging at Phoenix. "I'll try to make it quick an' painless."

"You don't know who you're going up against, do you?" the Phoenix said, reducing the computer banks that the Thing was carrying to ram her to its component atoms.

"Not what I wuz expectin', obviously."
