View Full Version : don't kill me over this idea but maybe anime clix?

i thought this would be a great place to possibly discuss this idea.
i think that if they picked the right animes it could be a great idea!
Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, One Piece, Darker than Black, FLCL, Trigun, maybe even Code Geass!
i guess i'd welcome this idea 100%!
i'd even be willing to work for wizkids for free to help make them!
depending on what animes they'd pick you could have some pretty wacky dials or some pretty awesome ones!
...this time of the year again?
another Amalgam thread should be popping up sometime soon

Anime has its fans. Since the door has been opened to non-super-hero stuff with Street Fighter, Lord of the Rings, and Iron Maiden, I don't find this a crazy notion.
It's not up my alley, but it doesn't really sound any crazier than that other stuff.
what do you mean this time of year? i've never seen a thread discussing this.
Well, I've only been here a year and I've seen a dozen threads discussing anime clix. There's a Gundam thread going on right now!
It's not a bad idea, depending on the anime in question. Bleach or any of the Shonen fighting anime would be a good fit. Many others really wouldn't. Something like FLCL would be hard if not outright impossible to do, given the way it dances around reality. Is our lead character a normal human being or someone who can deflect fireballs from space with a baseball bat? Yes. Sorta... whatever.
Anything with fighting machines probably isn't going to work very well, in my opinion. Those would need their own game with their own rules, and stuffing them into HeroClix would hurt both.

I think it would only make sense that Ultraman and some classic Toho monsters become Clix before delving into anime properties.

realy? that many? eh.
i don't want mechs in clix. but code geass could work as their mechs would only be giant sized, plus they had alot of actiony things outside of the mechs as well.
but yes shonen was what i was mainly thinking with FMA & bleach & stuff like that. but FLCL could work if you pick the right people like canti & haruko.

I don't know why I detest the run-of-the-mill stereotypical animé personalities, but I do and it makes it unwatchable to me. Especially the "silent, strong type," "spunky tomboy girl with attitude" and "young hero on a quest who's absurdly powerful, but still playful, mischievous and totally oblivious to the attention of girls" templates.
I guess I'm just getting old and grumpy, though.

I enjoy anime quite a bit, but I wouldn't want it in clix form. The anime's that would translate well into a superhero game are the superhero type shows (DBZ/Bleach), but unfortunately the archetypes are just way too derivative. Everyone gets hypersonic, super strength, flight, and a trait to give them phasing teleport. Mission accomplished.

The one anime I really liked in its contrast to "the anime style" was Cowboy Bebop - Heck, I even think the Joss Whedon show, Firefly, was practically a live action Cowboy Bebop.
I'd be interested in seeing ideas for an Anime-Clix set, but I'd prolly only buy a couple singles - I don't know how crazy I'd go for it.
That's prolly why most anime-games have remained in Collectible Playing Card Formats.

I have said it before and I will say it again.
If Wizkids thinks that they can make money off of this, then fine.
They aren't likely to get much, if any, of my money, but I am not the only customer out there (something that some people seem to be oblivious of).
Obviously, giant mecha are not a good fit, as they would best be done as colossals and I wouldn't expect any large sets for this sort of thing, just small sets possibly including single-figure boosters.
But Wizkids is looking at expanding the Heroclix brand to include more than just Marvel and DC. If they can get the rights to make a "Battle of the Planets" set, then great (and I may buy some of that).
I know that Gatchaman is the source, and some people may complain about that, but I am guessing that Battle of the Planets is better known to more people in the states. At least those of a certain age.
Include the five members of G-Force and 7-Zark-7 as heroes, and then Zoltar and three different Spectra agents as villains (agent, operative, and elite agent, maybe), and you have a ten figure set all ready for the single figure booster treatment.
Heck, they could even rename the figures for international sets if they wanted to. Don't know what they would call 7-Zark-7, though. Maybe just call him "robot" and be done with it.
=====================================================
But the biggest part of all of this is the success of the single figure boosters and fast forces packs.
If those fail, then these smaller sets are going to have an uphill climb to make it to market.
Even if they eliminate single figure boosters, they are still going to have to think about whether or not paying for the license to make a six-ten figure set from whatever is going to be worth it.
I like to play what I like. I am glad that Halo is getting it's own fast forces pack/set of whatever size rather than getting lumped in with a bunch of stuff that I have no interest in, but that allows us all to be more selective, and the selectivity may lead to lower than expected sales as we become pickier about what we buy.

Dude, back in the day when I first saw shadow king, negative woman and Johnny thunder's sculpts, it reminided me so much of how I would have imagined Stands in clix.
DBZ is a bad choice because everyone has the same basic power set, but Fullmetal Alchemist and One Piece have a wide enought variety of superpowers that could compete with those in american comics. Plus Akira, we need akira.

I tend to base Clix I want to be made on silly things I could do during a game.
Yelling MUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDA as I roll for Flurry would be so much fun. Having alternating choruses of "TETSUOOO" and "KANEDAAAA" also qualify.
A colossal Blob Tetsuo with a scenario map would be very cool, as well.
edit: Making a couple Guyver clix in a collector's set would be interesting, except they would all play similarly and just be another high-cost flying HSSer.

Heyo - thought I'd try to catch you again on this one. I am an avid gamer of all types, shapes, and sizes. There were two awesome card games by Score Entertainment for DBZ/GT and Bleach. I own a ton of them if you're interested.
.Hack has a card game as well, but I am unsure of the company that does it. Yu Yu Hakusho and Inuyasha have one as well.
And yes, Cowboy Bebop is nothing short of amazing. Best limited cartoon series ever. Very artistic, stylized, and it had a wonderful movie.
The problem with anime clix is the same as with Indy clix in that its a licensing nightmare. You could do it but it'd be more realistic to focus on a specific publisher (Shueisha would probably be the best as Shonen Jump naturally as lots of comparable series). Then the series themselves are not necessarily suitable. Some of the popular series, such as Dragonball and Bleach, just wouldn't work.
There are however some great series which would probably work though (One Piece, Naruto, Shaman King and Katekyo Hitman Reborn are all series with a western presence and a large variety of styles that can easily fit the game).
Personnally I'd be sold on either a Bubblegum Crisis set although I doubt anyone else would be.

I'd love to see Vash the Stampede make it into Heroclix form, along with the crew from Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and probably Bleach. Something like Berserk would probably work well too.
That having been said, unfortunately some of the best/most interesting animes just wouldn't fit well due to their nature, like FLCL and Paranoia Agent.

A few animes would work wonderfully in a Clix, but most would just suck. Either they all have similar powers, or they have too many ultra-overpowered world-saviors, or their characters aren't fit for combat, or a multitude of other problems.
Some, like Fate Stay Night or Darker than Black, have very "super-heroish" characters. Weirdly enough, I believe most Magical Girl animes would work as well. However, in the end the ones which would be made would be just the most popular... what would likely lead to disaster - just imagine Goku taking down Galactus or your Ultron being killed by a Death Note.
But, even they made the best choices possible and only animes I like, I still believe it should be kept separate from normal HeroClix. Different themes, different kinds of battle, different games.

Street Fighter clix are the closest you are ever going to get to anime clix. It just doesn't make sense.
From what I've seen, the venn diagram of anime fans and superhero fans has a comparatively small portion in the middle, so what I suspect you'd get are a fair number of new players getting their little versions of Goku or Hellsing or Alphie, and then quickly being turned off by the dominance of the superhero element, and not bother with the tournament scene. A great many of the potential customers would likely already play a CCG, so the switch to a more expensive and complex game is a bit tough. Meanwhile, it would be a tough sell for existing players, specifically ones who have zero interest in the characters themselves. Its just not that viable a product.

Yeah, I've considered that option too. In comparison, I think that at least 70% of recent/modern Marvel and DC is written by incompetent hacks  To be fair, I was generalizing about the animes that are well known enough in the west to even have a remote chance of being clixed.

With the exception of a handful of older series, I'm not really that huge of an anime fan so for that reason it's really not something I'd be all that into, but with the expanding pool of properties and licenses being thrown into the mix I can't really say I think it'd be that bad to have them.
I guess, like with most things, I'd just as soon they at least tried to keep the scope of the game in mind - sci-fi/fantasy/superhero human sized beings fighting each other. So no Gundam unless it's going to be its own separate clix game, because it's in the wrong scale. Batman can't knock out a Zaku II with a left hook (although Superman probably can...) and the RX-78 cant take cover behind a bush. DBZ makes a lot of sense, though - it's humans and humanoids with superpowers duking it out. Really as long as the emphasis on super-powered combat isn't lost I'm more-or-less OK with it.
I'd lose interest if the anime theme began to overtake the more traditional comicbook theme, though.

I'd have no interest in this product but if enough people do, that's great. Why should my lack of interest hold thiers back? I am glad for Street Fighter. Gears of War does nothing for me but thankfully they are being sold separatly & I don't have to buy them. There's plenty of stuff coming out that I do want. If they slow down due to producing something I don't want it will help me keep up with those things. It's all good in my book.

You could probably place me as an Otaku, but to be honest, I really don't want to get that peanut butter in this chocolate, regardless of the flavor it could blend. As it goes, I think the licensing is starting to go a little crazy as far as Amalgam-clix is going, and the less this stresses the product, the better. I'm not opposed to spreading the wings of an old game goes, but I could also see it being the inevitable downfall of the product as well.
That being said, I could totally go for an Ultra-man, or a Kamen Rider. Just one though, not their own sets. They're fairly fitting.

I really would like to see anime clix. I've grown up with both anime and western comics/cartoons. I feel it could fit in clix but they would have to be careful because like others have said on this thread most anime/manga has either God like characters or everyone is pretty much the same. I think if they made one set with a bunch of different characters and try to use people that were not the same or too powerful.
Right now I actually make custom anime clix. Though its tuff to find sculpts to modify into certain characters.
I think the reason to make Anime clix wouldn't so much be for our sake, but more to possibly get some part of the Japanese market. It would be a good time to do it now too as Marvel have had some animes recently: Ironman, Wolverine, X-men and Blade is coming up. So they might be able to get a tie in there. Models are very popular in Japan, the main issue would be if they are high enough quality to sell there. But it looks like they put a lot of work into making the Street Fighter ones look good so I guess they may be checking the Japanese market with them.

I vote for Anime Collectors sets only. This way they could be avoided by non fans and my 'Fist of the Northstar' characters wouldn't get rubbed all over by those Bleach dorks.
Kenshiro BTW needs the old HSS multi-hit power and a 'kills outright' special rule. Just saying.
Maybe a full anime set would be cool as long as it wasn't flooded with one show's worth of characters. "Look! I got Tetsuo! and... Rock Lee, Naruto, Sasuke and Orochimaru... Great..."

That's the problem I see. You can probably get some play out of some of them but not all of them. Dragonballz probably comes to mind as the most compatible as you have characters that can display varied point values of Heroclix.
Anything mecha would probably have to be seperate game that's non-compatible (or built as collossals, that could get expensive...) though if you did do Gundam Clix (compatible or not) and used a few of my favorites in like a series of blind/non-blind Super boosters at 20-25 dollars, I wouldn't mind drop some money on like 4 of them. (Even as a seperate game using the clix base that could be very interesting)

Some anime just won't work with Heroclix. As others have said, characters are too OP (either by fans or the creators themselves) or all the characters have a similar power set. Bleach would basically be the Indy set; give everyone blades and zero range. Unless you don't want to run the captains, which EVERYONE will.
Now Trigun I can get behind. Maybe a Jonah Hex sort of pack? I can also see Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop. The characters in those are different from each other and would be interesting to field.
DBZ needs it's own Heroclix game. It won't play well with others.

Yeah i thought about this before. I'm sure naruto, one piece, akira, ghost in the shell, bleach, and dragonball z would sell pretty well. Alot of anime fans buy gasophan.gasophons which are basically figs that you buy in Japan outta gumball machines for 500-700 yen. They come in a few pieces that you hav to put together but are already painted. They look awesome and people nuy those for 10-25 dollars here. Look em up on ebay and see how well made they are. The marvel and dc ones are excellent. Some anime properties i'd personally like to ce made into clix are, Deadman Wonderlan clix, Code Geass clix ( mechs rock ), and Soul Eater clix that use the new mechanic NECCA is using in the Captain America sets that has certain things you add to certain clix that add powers/abilites. Have lelouch from code geass put on his Zero mask, SSuzaku Kurirugi from code geass get in his mech, Pam and Lizzy from Soul Eater turn into ther desert eagle gun and have Death the kid pick em up and use em in battle. Lotsa cool powers and abilities that would easily translate into clix gameplay.
P.S. Have Goku whenever he goes super saian or whatever have to spend the next 3 turns charging up before he can do his power. Always hated DBZ becaues it seemd like all they did in battles was standstill and scream for 5 minutes charging up to lvl 1000 before they did anything. Then finally they'd hit someone into a mountain and it would explode.

All I honestly want are some Mega Man clixs. Is that to much to ask for?

A Mega Man Heroclix set would be too awesome for words. I'd especially want Zero (as in the original Zero, not the weird chibi-looking one from the ZX series.) He's my favorite character from that entire franchise (with Rock as a close second.)
Plus a Mega Man set could make great use of 3D objects and removable objects / pieces.

I know the show doesn't really count to most anime fans I've met, but if it means I can get a Kuma from Afro Samurai to team up with Bronze Tiger and fight an endless horde of my old Hand Ninja pieces, I'm all for anime properties. :D
Also, I second the need for Megaman in clix form. Boomer Kuwanger is the one Maverick I'm dying to see in a game, but all of the Robot Masters would be cool too.

Zero is not in the ZX series at all. I assume you mean the Mega Man Zero series, but I have trouble understanding because those games are amazing.

Anime has its fans. Since the door has been opened to non-super-hero stuff with Street Fighter, Lord of the Rings, and Iron Maiden, I don't find this a crazy notion.
It's not up my alley, but it doesn't really sound any crazier than that other stuff.
I DO NOT get Iron Maiden! That is a band! It makes A LOT MORE SENSE TO HAVE ANIME THAN A FRICKIN BAND FOR GOD SAKES......ok I'm better now.

also DBZ would be FARRRR to broken. Goku would never lose. even if he was KO'ed, he could still fight
Nah.
Goku gets beat and KOed all the time. Goku gets his butt handed to him in his first fight against Raditz. When Goku fought Freeza for the first time, he gets severely beaten. In the end Goku and his crew might win the war, but Heroclix is about battles. Goku routinely lost many battles.
As far as heroclix goes, once Goku is KOed, that's it.
If anime clix got me some sweet Tachikoma peanut-based transporters I'd pay for the set to be made :knockedou

Wow, I'd completely forgotten about Bubblegum Crisis - terrible name but an awesome show. Those would make great clix! As if Armor keyword teams need any help, though. Still, the knightsabers and boomers, if nothing else, would be pretty cool.

I do not think that all DBZ figures would have the same power, lets give dial designers some credit here. They can get creative

Goku - Kaioken (or however it's spelled) - similar to Bane's "Venom" SP
Krillin - Destructo Disc - penetrating ranged BCF
Piccolo - Special Beam Cannon - Psychic Blast that hits all opponents in a straight line
Vegeta - Gallic Gun - RCE against target figure, Energy Explosion against figures adjacent to the target

You know what's more likely than all of this?
Marvel Anime Clix.
I couldn't watch the X-Men one because Cyclops fired missiles from a motorcycle at a helicopter. HE CAN SHOOT LASERS FROM HIS FACE! COME ON! REALLY!? MISSILES!? REALLY!?

I agree with DBZ not being a good fit, but i think that Jojo's Bizzare Adventure, Hellsing, Ninja Scroll, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Hunter D would all be cool.

The following I think would be pretty good additions to Heroclix:
Sword of the Berserk
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Bleach
Naruto
Thundercats - yeah I know, not quite anime, but I'd still love to see them
Transformers G1 - see above
Ghost in the Shell
Hellsing
Vampire Hunter D
Gundam Wing

Pokemon would be pretty hard to pull off, but DBZ is very possible.
