View Full Version : 2011 HCRealms.com T-Shirt!
It's been a long time coming; but we've been tweaking the winning design from last year's contest and getting it "just right". That being said; we are finally ready to go to print so that everyone can get a shirt before convention season kicks off this year!
If you are interesting in purchasing a shirt; please complete the poll attached to this announcement and let us know what size(s) you are intending to order ... so that we order the run of sizes. Demand will drive the price; as I will pass the volume discounts through to the community! Let's swarm GenCon, Origins, and Wizard World this year!

Navy blue shirt. This is the design on the "BACK"; a white "RealmWorx Gear" will be on the front; ala. Iron Man's arc reactor.

Well I wasn't going to buy one of the original ones - but this one I am buying. Mainly because it's not frigging orange.
XL for me. I could probably get a Large since I've lost a bunch of weight, but I prefer XL since t-shirts shrink all the time.
Where's size "Smedium"??

I have a feeling they couldn't put Heroclix on the t-shirt without getting the ok from Wizkids. So Wizkids either said "nope" or they said "yep we get a specific % of the $" and it was too much or just easier to say ok nevermind we will just have it say hcrealms.

I agree. I think the Clix pieces were just too problematic. Besides, who cares that it doesn't say or invoke HEROCLIX real big. It's an inside thing. When you see another guy wearing one at a con, you'll be inclined to stop and chat. It's a way to recognize other members of our little club.
And besides, its not like if it did declare HEROCLIX real big across the chest that 99.8% of the general populace would know what the heck you were talking about anyway. I dig it!

This is a definite improvement from the original winner. And the fact that it is Navy Blue instead of some atrocious Orange or even the classic "Gamer Black" makes me tempted to put in an order for myself + 1. It will be interesting to see just how big the HCrealms membership really is.

I like the overall design, except the chess pieces are a little misleading. Would prefer them not be there or have outlines of figs in generic hero poses on a base. That aside, it rocks. I was actually explaining to my brother in law what heroclixs is and I described it as chess meets d&d with comic book heroes.

what are the dimensions of the shirts...I like the fit of medium but sometimes mediums are too short in length
That's usually my problem. Well, let's be honest. My gut is my problem, but I am also very tall and it is hard for me to get a shirt that is long enough for me. By the time I do get one long enough it usually looks like a dress.

Commit to a size without any price or ordering information???
The website is like chess with Superpowers?
I agree that this design is a VAST improvement, but now I don't know what game we are talking about. I will have to ponder.
I actually liked the previous design much better (showing Thor and Cap on the chessboard). It was cool and really showed what the game was all about.
I have a feeling they couldn't put Heroclix on the t-shirt without getting the ok from Wizkids. So Wizkids either said "nope" or they said "yep we get a specific % of the $" and it was too much or just easier to say ok nevermind we will just have it say hcrealms.
I'd be very surprised if this were true.
Didn't the previous HCRealms tshirt clearly show a Heroclix piece in the design? Also, aren't there several members of Wizkids who participate on this site? This is free promotion for them. I can't see how they'd be opposed to it.
Commit to a size without any price or ordering information???
Where's the commitment? It's a poll to help gauge demand. The price will be based on anticipated order size, as he said up front.
I'm going with "Small" but you guys should check out s/m/l for women's style too.
I went with an XL to help account for "shrinkage"

Yes. Thus allowing me to use my medley of hats. A solid color would have been lame, but this looks promising.
I'm also concerned about length. I put down L, but if they're going to be lengthy I will need a M. 100% cotton?

The website is like chess with Superpowers?
I agree that this design is a VAST improvement, but now I don't know what game we are talking about. I will have to ponder.
Yeah, hopefully constructive criticism is allowed for the new design.
I feel the "It's like chess with" is disconnected from the "SUPERPOWERS" at the bottom. I actually read it like, "It's like chess with...SUPERPOWERS HCREALMS.com"
Perhaps if the HCrealms could have been put at the top and the slogan at the bottom with SUPERPOWERS, it'd read better.
The design is very cool, though.
I like the overall design, except the chess pieces are a little misleading.
I could see the chess pieces being misleading, especially since it's the most recognizable element (along with the chess board) on the shirt. People will form opinions about the game before they ever come up and ask you about it.
I could easily see people thinking this game is a form of chess with alternative rules.

I'm the guy at the shop who doesn't get to invoke the "fat guy rule" about moving between rounds.
Medium it is!
Thanks for the positive feedback. To address some questions:
I didn't put a price in there because it's really dependent on the volumn; but I don't expect it to be greater than $14.95 ... and I'm hoping to get it closer to $12.95. For sizes XXL+, there is a $2 added cost.
As for why there isn't "heroclix" or any figure silhouettes; it was half design decision, and have uncertainty about how WizKids/NECA would react. So we just decided to keep it off. I have asked them about adding "HeroClix" onto the shirt; but I think the shirt works fine without it.
My goal is to make 500-1,000 shirts; with the idea of selling them throughout the year and swagging it out for various contests. We will hold another design contest near the end of the year, with a much faster turn-around (think christmas). I expect that with Street Fight, LOTR, and all the other "HeroClix" properties, we'll have more design options.
constructive criticism is still welcome; but we're only making minor layout changes (colors are pretty much locked in).
Perplexinator
04/29/2011, 21:02
Honestly, I'd just move the HCREALMS.com to the front of the shirt. I think 1) That would leave the back solely to the hook/gimmick and 2) would get people to come up to the person more and ask them about the game.

Thank you for taking the critique i gave as constructive. I really do like the color scheme and overall look and design of the shirt a lot better. I think the comment later about the chess pieces being too prominant is valid.
I just think heroclix itself has to be incorporated somehow. Even just the word heroclix above the design so that it reads "Heroclix It's like chess with Superpowers"
Maybe a crushed (in the middle) booster box in the fist with a small heroclix logo (with permission of course) or the word heroclix on it would do the trick as well.
BTW, after thinking about it, I'll probably still be getting an XXL.

Sweet! XXXL for me please! ...and just in time, my original T-shirt is starting to wear out! =D
I think the design's fine as is. It's not meant to be an instruction course at a glance.
Especially heading into the convention season the shirt has two main functions (three if you count clothing.):
So Realmsers have a better chance of meeting each other.
So others will ask what the shirt means, providing an opening to tell someone about Heroclix and this site.

What aspects from the original design would you have kept? Which elements of this design would you get rid of? Get specific and maybe changes can be made. If a bunch of others agree with you, that is.
I for one think this version is much cleaner than the first draft. It is far more polished.
Keep in mind that the old HCRealms shirts had no mention of Heroclix anywhere on the shirt. I'm wearing mine right now.

It's basically the same but looks a lot more amature and jumbled -and it was an awful looking orange. This one is a lot better. Some people were never going to shell out the money to buy one either way, they just use the changes as an excuse to feel better about being all aorund tools.

In combination with the Attack Symbol fist coming up through the board and the exploding chess board squares, the Clix silhouettes would have made the design overly complicated. It would have become jumbled and far too busy.

Well, that's nice and all, but I'm expecting that there will be at least some who won't make the real decision to buy until they see the cost, including shipping, especially as not even a ballpark dollar amount has been mentioned in the OP. As this polling is a factor in determining what that cost will be...
Still, each must act according to his own lights. I suspect most people reserve the right to change their minds as significant information comes up, having learned how not to be trapped by 1950s/early 1960s Superman story plot hooks. ;)

Yeah, exactly. This is the same reason not every player chomps at the bit to pre-order every set, sight unseen.
As an aside, this is also why the current distribution method for clix itself is unsatisfactory to many.
The bottom line is most people don't make a purchase decision until at least the whole cost is known, if nothing else.

I don't want to cross over into different territory with this, though, taking the thread off-course. I was only making a statement of expectation about what many here will do concerning shirts.
On the issue of sets, right or wrong, I became used to making my main ordering decision 3-4 months ahead of time, usually based on nothing more than a set announcement and maybe a peek at a sculpt or two. This was my adaptation by the time Xplosion was announced. So, I accepted that as part of the deal back in 2003.

I fail to see how anyone fronting about "Oh I'm not committing without a price" can even say that. It's going to cost around $15 plus shipping at max. So around $20. Typhon isn't even locking you into buying one with this poll - he is taking a risk by buying 500-1000 shirts. We could participate in the poll and then nobody buy one and he's stuck with 1000 shirts. If you wouldn't pay $20 for one of these I just don't get it. Customized t-shirts like this normally cost $25-$30 and up for one. Typhon is taking a big risk by buying that many in order to get the price down for everyone here. I find it almost insulting that people are #####ing about not knowing the exact price. It doesn't take a genius to realize it's going to be around $20. That's so worth it. If you can't afford $20 then don't do it, but saying "I want the price first" is so weak it's not even funny. Especially when you aren't even really committing!
Edit: The OP did give a ballpark, read the whole thread before committing to try and use excuses why you were never going to buy a shirt regardless of price.

The orange design was only supposed to be an alternate. How it ended up as the main one, only Typhon and God know.
As the original designer of the shirt, I'm OK with this final design. My main problem is that it no longer says "This is Heroclix" visually or explicitly, which was my chief issue with many of the other submitted designs. The silhouettes were the only real way I saw to elegantly express it, but as Typhon alluded to, they were an issue for multiple reasons.
I'm SO over it.
I'll wear this a lot. In fact, assuming my employment/financial situation improves in time, I'll order an extra in addition to the free one I get as winner. :classic:

Going with the LARGE and in CHARGE size of 4XL.
Or as they say MOGO size.
And honestly depending on the price I wouldn't mind purchasing two shirts.
We are going to tweak the shirt a bit and add "HeroClix" into the design (got the greenlight from WizKids). "theavengerthor", who redid Rurouni's design, is working on it and we'll put the updated (and hopefully final) design up.
As for pricing; as it's been said throughout this thread; the plan is to make it no more than $15+S&H (+$2 for XXL+ Sizes). My hope is that it's actually closer to $12. It all depends on volume ordered. It's major overhead for me to place the order; and the risk is even higher if people don't order the shirts.
Which is one of the reasons why it's taken so long; and the design has been redone. It's all to get the best product to drive the order volume (and discounts) up.

I'm in for long-sleeve shirts, too! Large.

If you can happen to do long sizes, Typhon, I'll take an XLT. I'll happily pay any extra amount.:)
I would switch mine to 3X if I could get an extra tall shirt. However, I would get two shirts (One 3XLT and one regular 4X to be sure all around)

Might wanna be careful how you phrase things. A less upstanding member of the community might take an opportunity like that and turn it on you.

The whole point is to put the RealmWorx logo on the front so it mimics Iron Man's ARC reactor. I think it's genius. Why would you want that on the back?

I am not much of a iron on / Logo shirt dude. I am cool with a small logo on the front to the left or right breast. Large logos do belong on the back though, even if they are trying to make it an iron man thing... shirts are typically made as dude below stated. Its all good though, that's what makes it cool.
I am still gonna grab one...
Well, since Typhon made it publically known that TheAvengerThor was the guy responsible for the redesign I can now publically say GREAT JOB to my brother on the logo!

I would prefer it reversed, with the main design on the front and the realms logo on the back. I want the good stuff on the front.

It'll be mainly through PayPal ... as I really don't plan to bring these to the convention with me to sell.

With responses like this, how am I supposed to tweak this design? Just goes to show you, that it is impossible to please everyone. But I'm sure gonna try. I'll be sending Typhon a tweaked design in a day or two and hopefully I can make the majority of you guys happy.

I have looked at a printer that does tall sizes, but haven't been able to find one at the right price. I will continue to look and see what we can do. I'm also looking to go all the way up to 6XL.

I usually buy XX-Large T-shirts and they fit how I like, but the last HCRealms XX-Large shirt was on the small side. I will probably order a XXX-Large this time, expecting the shirt to run small.
Different manufacturer's shirts fit differently, it would be good to know who makes the T, Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, etc; what the shirt is made of: 100% cotton, 90/10 cotton/poly blend; and if it is pre-shrunk.

Adding "HeroClix" to the design is the only tweak I wanted. I'm a happy camper, now. And I tip my professional hat to you!

A 2XL and a 3XL - so when I inevitably shrink the 2X too small I can shrink 3X into the right size lol. I'm not fat, I'm Fluffy! ^.^
I'd have to go with XXL as the last time around, I got the XL which shrunk to almost a Medium.

Looks great!
okay…
how about next time you have a slogan contest and save some of us a lot of fruitless work.
I'm firmly convinced of the membership's affection for corny jokes.
I'm also firmly convinced in their disregard for good design if they could instead vote for a corny joke.
My real Honest to god suggestion: Next time you go to have this contest; do it in two parts. First have a contest where members all submit their wittiest tag-lines. Choose the best and run a vote to see what people like the most. THEN have a design competition where all entries must use that tag-line.
With the total Redesign of this shirt… I'm inclined to like it now. The entry as submitted was terrible. So the redesign was warranted and I think you did a great job with it.
As the original designer of the shirt, I'm OK with this final design.
I had no idea you were the designer of that one. I feel less facelessly asinine about losing now.
I do however stick by my assessment that the Redesign was needed. I think It looks better now… and I'm still a little peeved about how much the slogans weighed into the voting. I put a lot of work into my design and I feel I lost a lot of votes because I didn't have a corny one-liner on mine.
Sour grapes I know…#but we all know I'm a total bastard right?
Regardless I'll be buying at least one of them.
Congrats Rurouni KJS!
oh~ are participants that made it to the final round still getting free shirts? Cause If I get one free I'll buy a second one as well~!

Hey, my one-liner wasn't corny. :) I'm not defending the design, though...I still don't know why the orange version was the one chosen. I just tried it on a whim. It was designed for black and my revision (same concept but more symmetrical) would've been on a black shirt.
I loved the work you put into yours, but it was SO insular that it didn't make sense to anyone but a few HCRealms people. The truly great t-shirts out there are as much about the writing as they are the design.
That's why your suggestion is a great one. I like my idea and 2nd design fine, but the redesign is my idea with...well...

I like the design and i appreciate the ARC reactor styling. I just happen to prefer larger images on the front of my shirts and the smaller logos on the back. That is all.
It would be really cool if the Realmworks gear in the design shown here were scaled the exact same size as the gear on the front and the prints were placed so that they aligned with each other. That would be visually striking ~!

Gamer Medium, otherwise known as 2X. :cheeky:
The design is being placed on the back because most gamers sit at a table and designs in front are blocked (or face someone who you are playing; and they already know about HeroClix). :) Designs on back get more exposure and can be worn under another shirt without the design "peaking out". :)
As for the arc reactor "gear logo" on the front; it's literally only 4-6" high, centered on the chest, in white.
Jarimy123
05/03/2011, 07:52
So the front is plain? Blah. I'll still get one but that is weak. I get that gamers sit at tables and what not, but if I am talking to someone and they see a blank shirt it's like "hey nice plain blue t-shirt you scrub." But if they see the design they are like "oh hey what is that all about?" and you look down and are like "oh yea man that is heroclix blah blah blah."
Much rather would see it on the front, but you are the man so it is what it is.
just to counterweight the opinions stated:
I totally get the plain logo front and really like it.

What do you mean by plain logo front? There will be something on the front? If so I missed that part and would be fine with that. It's not like my post was to try and get him to change things, so I don't really understand your post anyway, it doesn't really say much.
Edit: I see now, the arc logo thing. Ok that makes more sense, I don't know why I missed that part. I thought it was totally plain on the front.

I would like to have a 2 x-large t-shirts...Please....need prices and all that stuff...
Looks like the shirt will be $14.95 + S&H ( +$2 for XXL+ sizes). That is the highest it will be; and my hope is still go to lower than that. It looks like we have at least 500 with dibs on them at some level. I really want get to the 1,000+ mark since it's a significant volume discount, but I also don't have the space to have unsold shirts just sitting around my house.
I think that $14.95 is a fair price though; especially once we make the additional tweaks.
have you thought of offering them as part of a membership incentive for higher level donations?
Like tote bags for telethons?

2X for me!
I think if you did a revise of the T-shirt. You might get a few more buyers/takers. People liked the silhouettes from the last one and were hoping for them on this one. I really think if you changed the chess pieces to silhouettes of super heroes you might get more takers and it would convey the message of “It’s like chess with super powers”. It real would not take much to change the rook, bishop, and pound to a silhouette. I did my thing in the design contest and I did not make it. I was pushy and bold in the design. I do that a lot. I try to make people think. I like the design but let us think. It looks like you have super powers when it comes to playing chess. I will show my support and gratitude to the winner, by getting a shirt. I am a big guy like most that play games. (And blame the dryer foe shrinking my shirt). So I will take the biggest one you got.
When is the next graphic contest? I need to stay sharp and try to do what the people like.

Also concerning "Gear" symbol as well as the shirt design: How much would it cost to get patches of those made?

I have confirmed that we can go all the way up to 6XL; so I will extend the current order numbers to cover sizes up to that size. Sadly; I also found out that they don't do Tall sizes.
I plan on order these on Monday; which will still put us on track to have them for sale by end of May!

Sorry for the logo revision delay on my end guys. My brother is in from out of town and I have been too busy playing the role of good host to be able to sit down and work on this logo. But I have tomorrow night earmarked for design work, so that Typhon will have something to show you guys on Friday morning.
