Heroes For Hire

Hey all, and welcome to another Marvel Edition of Comic Accurate. Taking some time off from all the X-Men and related groups, we're going to look at one of the more beloved B-Teams in the Marvel Universe: Heroes For Hire. We're going to look at the team's varying incarnations from their inception to the current quasi-roster.

The best place for us to kick things off is the very formation of the team way back in the 1978. Iron Fist joined Power Man in issue #50 of Luke's book and for the next seventy-five issues, this duo faced off against villains ranging from Whirlwind, Sabretooth, Unus, Constrictor, Mole Man, The Living Monolith and a whole mess of other C-list villains before their cancellation in 1986.

Together, that pair is 180 points and can make for a cheap 200 point game. Add in Unstoppable and Not So Special for Luke and Auto Regen for Iron Fist and you're golden. Either that or take out the feats, put the Misty Knight & Colleen Wing bystanders in and a guest star or two like Daredevil, Moon Knight, Falcon or Wonder Man & Beast. That could easily pump it up to 300 points, depending on which versions you use. And heck, if you're filling out points with bystanders, feats and guest stars, you could opt to use the Power Man & Iron Fist duo, but I'm personally not partial towards duos.

Now the book was cancelled and Iron Fist was believed dead up until his return in the pages of Namor back in '92. A couple more years later, after the big name heroes were believed dead during the fight with Onslaught, a new Heroes for Hire book was launched. It was Power Man & Iron Fist, along with the likes of Hercules, Black Knight, Ant-Man (Scott Lang), She-Hulk, the original Human Torch, Thena and a new White Tiger. Unfortunately, those last two characters haven't been made yet, but let's be honest, has that ever stopped us before?

(Note: Any team that has an Ant-Man on it, I pretty much use that piece for it. It's like the all-purpose Ant-Man, be it a team featuring Pym, Lang or O'Grady.)

This lineup comes out to 567 points. Again, leaving you the option of feating them up or throwing in one of the many guest stars the title featured. Deadpool, Wolverine, Punisher, Hulk, Shang Chi, Quicksilver or even the Thunderbolts all teamed up with the H4H, making that team seem almost "Defender for a Day"-ish.

But once again, cancellation reared it's ugly head. Heroes For Hire ended on its nineteenth issue in '99. Nine years would pass before the title was revived. This time around, as both Luke and Danny had made their way to joining The Avengers, the team would be led by Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. They recruited Black Cat, Shang Chi, Tarantula, Paladin, Orka and Humbug. And like the last H4H, those last two characters are unclixed as well.

This team comes out to 183 points. Yes, I left Paladin out. Because unfortunately there's no way to get him on the team without being insanely under in points. We'd have to use his rookie figure and then one of the old Black Cat figures from Clobberin Time. Thankfully, in the series, Paladin stabbed his teammates in the back during the Civil War in order for him to try and turn in Captain America. Shang-Chi stopped Paladin and left him laying for SHIELD to pick up. So what we could do is leave Paladin out to represent that, then add in Captain America or the Avengers TA Luke Cage to our 183 point team and pump it up to a 300 point Civil War Anti-Registration build. Your call.

Anyways, cancellation struck yet again after their fifteenth issue in 2007. But the title recently got another revival earlier this year. Misty Knight is still running the show with Ghost Rider, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Punisher, Black Widow, Paladin, Falcon, Silver Sable, and Elektra all as freelance operatives. Now I've only read the first issue of this so far, but it could make for a very unique build. And I know we've got a new 616 Black Widow on the way in the upcoming Captain America set, but for the moment, we'll work with what we have.

Now we're up to 557 points and I'm elated that I finally have a team to play that figure on, and even better, a solid role for him: as Silver Sable's Mastermind fodder! Now with eleven characters on a 600 point team, you may want to make sure you wildcard the Avengers TA to get them all into action quickly. Or at the very least, throw the Outlaws ATA on Silver Sable so your wildcards can get some extra movement. Best part is, that ATA is only one point, so you'll have 42 more points to fill out with feats.

So there you have it, four different eras of the Heroes for Hire. Until the next time the book is inevitably cancelled and relaunched.

Next time, a very special Comic Accurate Marvel Edition.

Just wanted to be first to post.

Why no love for the Iron Fist/Power Man duo?

Nice article, by the way.

Love it! H4H is one of my all time favourite teams. I love the current series and also really enjoyed the Ostrander series with Black Knight, Ant-man, Herc, etc.

Seriously you need the Power Fist duo.

Sure there are better Iron Fists but not really that good Luke Cages.

Thanks for fantastic article. Hopefully we see a Colleen Wing and Misty Knight leap off the Cardboard really soon (lend your support here to rally for them being made) (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=309788) I can't understand how Tarantula got made but they got skipped lol. Anyhoo when they get made I hope they pop in for under 145 combined so they can easily team with the newest Luke and Danny. Thanks again for a great Read. (how bout we rally for a new Black Knight while we're at it.)
