The New Titans #35
“Hoop Dreams”
By JackofHearts2005
Psimon was pleased with himself. Not a single one of his guests had refused their invite. The seven of them had joined him, along with Jinx and Gizmo, at his table. Ten supervillains gathered meant that (by Psimon’s calculations) he had twice as many bodies as he needed for a manageable team. Psimon rose from his seat and cleared his throat loudly to get everyone’s attention.
“My fellow miscreants” he began. Before he could finish his sentence, one of the newcomers, a black man in his early twenties with one eye in the center of his forehead, raised his hand. “Yes?”
“What’s a miscreant?”
Psimon gritted his teeth and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath and mentally counted to five before opening his eyes, trying to maintain his composure.
“A miscreant is--”
“I was just kidding” the one eyed man told him. “You should have seen the look on your face.”
The man sitting next to ‘Seemore’ smirked. He looked so damn smug, sitting there in jeans and a t-shirt, not even bothering to come up with a costume or a decent supervillain name. Billy Numerous was lucky that Psimon had given him this opportunity after the crap he had helped Shimmer and Mammoth pull a few weeks before. Truth be told, he had only invited the brat because he had forgotten to check Shimmer’s mind to see if they had been dating. Psimon was not about to stand there and let Billy laugh at him. With his telekinesis, Psimon lifted Billy out of his chair and threw him into the wall. The kid hit hard enough to knock a handful of duplicates out of him. Psimon let Billy go and he landed on top of a pile of other Billies. As an afterthought, he gave Seemore a migraine.
“Don’t make fun of me. Don’t laugh at me. Don’t ask stupid questions.” Psimon paused to let his words sink in. “As I was saying, we are here today to mark the dawn of a new era of crime. The Fearsome Five are to date the most successful anti-Titan villains. We have joined those child heroes in battle and only met with victory.” Psimon strategically left out the part where the Five had only fought the Titans as a unit once and that individually, they were a lot closer to oh and fifteen against San Francisco’s resident heroes. “However, two of my associates are…incapacitated. I could surely fix their ailments.” Ailments seemed like a nice way to say ‘I turned them into statues.’ “But frankly, that would be a lot of work to reenlist the aid of two mediocre fighters of questionable loyalty. So instead, we’re going to have try-outs of sorts.”
Psimon waited as Billy, avoiding eye contact, sat back down at the table. “You will split into two teams. Whoever pulls off the best crimes and does the best to humiliate Titans will be offered a spot on the Fearsome Five. Any questions?”
“Do we get to pick the teams?” the young woman in the silver dress asked.
“I…” Psimon hadn’t really thought of that. “Sure. Why not?”
“Do you want to be on my team, Charger?” the girl asked the man sitting next to her, biting her lip in mock nervousness.
“You know it, Deuce” he said with a smile, adjusting the collar of his gold tux.
Billy and Seemore made eye contact and nodded.
“We’ll take the shadow kid and the red guy” Billy told the others. Kid Wicked, who looked like a miniature Batman, had met Gizmo online. Psimon had personally delivered the boy his invitation as an excuse to telepathically make sure the kid checked out. He was an unsociable, overly grim child but he wasn’t a spy. Psimon had high hopes for him. A teleporter would be useful and making new friends would be good for the kid. Sabbac was less of a wildcard but more of a powerhouse. He would make a good Mammoth replacement if he was as powerful as Psimon had heard.
“Guess that means you’re with us” Charger extended his hand to the man in the containment suit.
“Whatever” Neutron said flatly, not shaking. Neutron, like Sabbac, was capable of taking on Starfire or Cyborg and coming out on top. Psimon had worked with him once before and though the living energy form had a bad attitude and though Psimon couldn’t read his thoughts, Neutron was too useful to not offer a chance.
“Well that settles that.”
“Wait a minute. They’ve got one more person than us.”
Before Deuce could finish, the door burst open and a man in a black and white costume ran into the room, panting. He had a long white cape and…was that a fin on his head? Why did this moron have a fin attached to his head?
“Sorry I’m late” the man wheezed. He leaned over, putting his hands on his knees. “Just a sec. Sorry. Sorry.” Psimon noticed that Seemore had his head in his hands. “Hey Seemore” the man said, giving the embarrassed youth a nod. “Psimon. What’d I miss?”
“Do I know you?”
“It’s me. Doctor Light? We met at that thing.” A quick telepathic scan indicated that no such “thing” existed.
“I…don’t believe you were invited to this meeting.”
“Oh please let me join your team up! You can’t have a Titans stomping team without me. I’m all about stomping the Titans.” Light grinned hopefully. Jinx came up beside Psimon and put her arm in his, scowling at the bumbling supervillain.
“And have you ever…stomped the Titans, Mr. Light?” Psimon asked, though he was fairly sure what the answer would be.
“Doctor. It’s Doctor Light” the villain corrected, trying not to sound annoyed before mumbling something about a PhD. “And uh no. I’ve had a lot of practice fighting them, though.”
“Losing to them, you mean” Jinx clarified for the imbecile. Psimon felt the same. This man had no place here. He wasn’t sure if he’d give one of his potential recruits a test run or if he’d just save the time and toss Light out himself.
“Oh be nice” Deuce spoke up.
“He can be on our team. That way, it’s fair” Charger agreed.
“Wonderful. Just what we need” Neutron shook his head. “More dumb wimps.”
“Fine. Whatever.” Light shook his fist, mouthing the word ‘yes.’ “Go forth and wreak havoc and whatnot.” Psimon waved his hand dismissively. “And don’t forget your cameras.”

The Titans arrived late for their meeting with the district attorney. Several of them were carrying backpacks or gym bags.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. Chase” Nightwing shook the DA’s hand. “There was a fire on third street.”
“Quite alright.” Adrian Chase, a lean, blonde man in his mid thirties, had held his position for several years now, working with the Titans to put various super criminals behind bars. Usually, he didn’t need much help since most supervillains were so blatantly obvious about their crimes, dressing up in brightly colored costumes and smashing things up in broad daylight. He only wished that the city council would agree to fund security renovations for Alcatraz. There had been half a dozen escapes in the last month on top of the mass breakout attempt by that Kestrel creature and the assassination of two of the Fearsome Five. Sometimes, Chase felt like he was running in circles, making cases against criminals only to see them run free again.
“I’m glad to see Garth and Donna have returned to our city’s favorite super team.” Troia beamed and Tempest gave the DA a small smile and a nod. “Please. Sit down.”
When the Titans were all seated, Chase started. “I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we’ve got Slade Wilson hands down on a weapons charge. Many of the firearms that he had in his home are not legal in the great state of California. The bad news is that might be about all we’ve got. His lawyer claims that Wilson gave up the Deathstroke identity decades ago and that someone else has been using it since Deathstroke’s first clash with you people. All the so called League of Assassins members have disappeared or are claiming to have never met the man. Even Cheshire says she has no idea who she was working for.”
“That’s not true, sir, and we can prove it” Nightwing assured the district attorney. “Tara infiltrated Wilson’s organization and can give you all the details you need.”
“Whoa. Hold up a sec, Batboy” Terra interjected. “I only knew they’re the same person cause you guys said so.”
“But you said that you had worked for Slade Wilson.”
“Yeah. Cause you guys said Deathstroke was Slade Wilson.”
They had to be joking. Nightwing had told him that they had captured Deathstroke the Terminator, not some ex military officer who kept a few guns at his house. That was a fine and thirty days in jail at the most and more importantly, it didn’t keep the villain who has masterminded the Lexcorp massacre behind bars.
“Listen, we know Slade Wilson is the one behind the League” Nightwing assured Chase. “We know. He knows we know it’s him. Just give us some time to find some evidence. Arsenal, you can talk to Cheshire can’t you?”
“For all the good it will do.”
“Guys, this is a waste of time” Donna spoke up. “There’s only one reason we know that Slade Wilson is the current Deathstroke…and that’s me.”
“No” Nightwing told her, sharply. “That’s not an option. We’ll find another way.”
“With all due respect, that’s not your call, D-“ She stopped herself, remembering where she was. “I’m a grown woman, Nightwing. I can make my own decisions.”
“There’s no way. It’ll ruin you, Donna. No one will trust you. If you do this, I don’t even know if we’ll be able to keep you out of prison.”
“Will somebody please tell me what the hell you’re talking about?”
There was a moment of silence as Troia and Nightwing both tried to decide what to tell him. It was annoying. Chase understood the need to keep a few of the Titans’ identities secret but he didn’t like having evidence withheld from him. It usually meant someone was scared or had screwed up, two things that were unbecoming of district attorneys and superheroes, alike.
“I’ve seen him unmasked” Donna told him. “I’ll testify. I’m not letting him go free.”
“Good.” Adrian Chase breathed a sigh of relief. “Now was that so hard?”
“Let’s go, Titans” Nightwing told his crew. “Thank you for your time, Mr. Chase.” He shook the DA’s hand again. “We’ll be in touch.”
_______________________________________
“So now what?” Terra asked as the Titans left Chase’s office.
“Now, little lady” Cyborg gave the younger Titan a big grin. “We’re going to go play some basketball.”
“Hell yeah” Hawk pounded Vic’s fist with his own. Beast Boy changed into an eagle and grabbed his pack with his talons as the rest of the guys took off at a jog. “Adios, ladies.”
“Hey wait up” Terra dislodged a square of concrete from the sidewalk and took off after them. The other girls flew a bit behind. “I wanna play too.”
“Sounds good” Beast Boy shrunk into a pigeon and landed on Terra’s head. “You can be our point guard.”
“You’re not exactly pushing seven feet either, greenie” she countered, brushing the bird away from her.
“Sorry, Tara. We’ve already got an even number” Arsenal explained. “Good luck convincing one of the others to play.” Tara made a grrr noise at Roy and turned back around.
“And put the sidewalk back when you’re done with it!” Nightwing shouted over his shoulder.
“So who’s coming with me?” she asked the rest of the girls as they came to floating halt.
“Basketball isn’t my sport” Donna said, shrugging her shoulders.
“What’s basketball? Is it like football?” The Titans had taken Kory to a 49ers game the year before.
“Um…kinda?”
Raven put her cloak over her head, not even bothering to decline Tara’s invitation. That’s okay, Spooky, Tara thought. I don’t want to play with you, anyways.
“I’ll play” Dove answered with a cheery smile. “Can we use powers?”
“Probably not. I mean, you could just fly over everybody right?”
“Well it won’t be much fun for me. I’m really clumsy when I’m not Dove. Sorry.”
“What are we going to do then? No seriously. Donna hangs out with Roy and Garth, Kory goes on dates with Dick, Dawn chills with Hank, I go out with Vic and Gar and Raven doesn’t like anybody.” She thrust her hands into the air. “What are an amazon, an alien, a spooky witch, miss lives-under-a-rock and the asskickingest girl since Joan of Arc supposed to do for fun?”
“Well…” Dove started.
“If you say go to the mall, so help me, I will break this chunk of concrete over your head.”
“I was going to say we could go to a movie. I kinda want to see Thor.”
“Well, there’s a theatre downtown that’s playing Rocky Horror tonight.” Donna suggested, hesitantly. Terra smiled. Gar and Vic had told her about how Donna was supposed to be this crazy killing machine, but Tara had always thought she seemed like Wonder Woman only a half foot shorter and a minus a few cup sizes. They were both so pure and selfless and boring when they weren’t punching somebody in the face or lifting something very heavy over their heads. She could imagine a younger version of Donna and Roy in a movie theatre all dressed up. “#######!” “Slut!”
“Perfect. I bet Kory hasn’t ever been.”
“If Donna Troy likes it, I do not believe I will.” Not this again. Ever since Donna had shown up, Kory had been going out of her way to make the team’s newest member feel as unwelcome as possible. At first, it really seemed to bug Donna but eventually, she started just politely ignoring it, much to Kory’s frustration. So far, it hadn’t carried over into the field or done much besides anger Dick but Terra wasn’t going to let it ruin the evening.
“Nonsense. There’s dressing up and screaming. You’ll love it.”
“I agree” Raven surprised both Tara and Donna by speaking up. She gave a sly smile. “We’ll all have fun.”
“Great!” Dove clapped her hands together. “I haven’t gotten a chance to dress up in so long.”
Donna raised an eyebrow and made eye contact with Tara, who stifled a giggle.
“So you haven’t seen Rocky Horror either?”
“Nope. What’s it about?”
_______________________________________
The male Titans hit the court for a round of three on three. Vic and Hank were natural athletes but Dick and Roy (who had to keep their masks on, as the only two Titans with a secret identity) were able to counter with their agility and shot accuracy. Gar and Garth were garbage but Gar had played enough to at least know how to pass to the right person. They established a few ground rules to make things fair. No dunking for Vic, no shots more than a meter beyond the three point line for Roy, no Hawk powers for Hank and no changing into animals for Gar.
They played for awhile, not paying too much attention to the crowd that had gathered around their court. When the shouting began to be a little too much, Nightwing promised the onlookers that they’d hang out and sign autographs for a bit after they were through.
Heading back to the game, Dick passed to Roy, who dribbled past Hank and took a shot on goal. A green giraffe grew out from under the basket, deflecting the shot with his head.
“Will you stop?” Hank shouted at his teammate. “That’s two more points for them for goal tending!”
“I can’t hear you from way up here” Gar answered, sticking his foot long tongue out at the party pooper, much to the delight of a group of children.
The ball rolled across the court until it came to rest under the foot of a man in a red shirt with sunglasses. Behind him was a one eyed man, a pasty white kid who couldn’t be more than fourteen and an eight foot tall red monster who looked a lot like South Park’s version of the devil. All were dressed in t-shirts or basketball jerseys and shorts.
“Can we play?”
“Billy Numerous” Nightwing said, though it sounded more like an accusation. Behind him, Hank said the magic word, transforming into Hawk while Beast Boy shifted into a green Kodiak bear and Cyborg’s sonic cannon clicked into place.
“Wait, I’m serious, man” Billy told them, holding his hands up in surrender. The one eyed guy couldn’t help but laugh. He passed the basketball back to Nightwing. “We wanna play some basketball.”
“Or we could just kick your butts” Hawk suggested. Big red calmly walked up to Hawk.
“Or we could just start killing your fans.” His voice sounded like a steam engine
“Or we could play basketball” Billy grinned. “Four on four, powers allowed, first to twenty one. If you win, we tell you what Psimon’s big scary plan is. If we win, you have to let us film you saying that you’ve been defeated by the Fearsome Five.”
“There are four of you” Beast Boy pointed out.
“Well yeah, but after we beat you” Billy elbowed his cycloptic friend in the gut.
“Shut up. Fearsome Four, then. Whatever.”
“Fouls?” Tempest asked.
“Please” the demon looking one put his hand on his chest, as if the question had wounded him. “Just because we’re supervillains doesn’t mean we’re cheaters. If somebody fouls, the other guy gets free throws.”
“Okay Titans” Nightwing said, sending a disappointed Beast Boy (at least until he noticed the group of teenage girls in the crowd) and ambivalent Tempest to the bench. “Let’s play some basketball.”

Scenario Rules:
-> This is a game of Basketball, gentlemen. Plain and simple. Your goal – put the ball in the hoop as many times as you can while stopping the other guy from doing so. Here’s how it’ll work:
-- The Ball will be represented by a single light object. Anybody can pick this object up or throw it. The Hoops are represented by the Blue and Red object tokens on either side of the map. When picking sides to begin play, you are picking which hoop is yours (and thus which one the opponent is trying to score on).
Play is restricted to the zone within the boundaries marked on the map. Yes it’s mildly uneven on one side; you’ll have to deal with that. After you’re done, maybe somebody will make a donation to the park so they can fix up their court some. :tired:
Shots made within 6 squares of the hoop are worth 2 points, shots made at 6 squares or beyond are worth 3.
The winner is the person with the most points after 20 rounds of play. Because turns can change so fast, we’re stretching this game a little longer. It’s an experiment, boys, let’s see how it pans out.
All characters start on either side of the center line (the K/M line), on the same side as ‘your’ hoop. The initiative roll determines who won the tip-off and starts with the ball. Declare which character holds it and give the object token to that character.
Shooting: Shots are made by making either a close or ranged attack against the hoop. If a character has a range of 0, it becomes a 4. The hoop has a defense of 16. Each time a shot is successfully made, it is the next player’s turn and he chooses one of his characters to have the ball, moving that character to a square adjacent to their “home” hoop.
Other characters do not block LOF to the hoop, so you can ‘shoot’ through them. However, you take a -1 penalty to hit for every adjacent opposing character. Any ability or power that would grant you a bonus to attack rolls grants the bonus to shooting attempts.
Passing: You can pass the ball to a teammate by making a successful attack against a 12 Defense. For each adjacent opposing character by you or the target teammate, you take a -1 penalty to hit. If you miss the pass due to the penalty opposed by opposing characters, one of them steals the ball. It is immediately the opponent’s turn, and he chooses who now has the ball.
Special Actions: Generally, there are no powers in this game. However, some powers allow special actions in play:
- Leap/Climb, Flight: These characters can Dunk. Dunking is a close combat attack that grants you a +2 bonus to hit. If you are adjacent to any opposing characters when you attempt the dunk, you take a -1 penalty to hit for each adjacent opposing character.
Flying characters cannot fly in this game, and cannot carry friendly characters.
- Charge: You can charge the hoop and make a Dunk attempt. You ignore the effects of one adjacent opposing character on your attack roll during the Dunk.
- ES/D: If an opponent attempts to shoot the ball and his LOS crosses through your square, you impose a -1 penalty on his attack roll even if you are not adjacent.
- Combat Reflexes: Works like the Plasticity power.
- Super Senses: You ignore the effects of one adjacent opposing character on your attack roll.
- CCE, Exploit Weakness: You ignore the effects of opponents’ Combat Reflexes (but not if making an actual attack; see Fouling).
- RCE: You ignore the effects of opponents’ ES/D on shooting attempts.
Fouling: You may choose to outright attack an opposing character, using normal Clix rules for the attack. If you successfully hit the target, resolve damage as normal. Afterward, that character gets to make two free-throws (ranged attack against DV 16). If successful, the player’s team gains 1 point for each success.
That should cover it. Play ball! If problems or questions arise and for some reason I can’t be around to answer them (super duper sorries), try and either come to an amicable solution between yourselves, or bring it to the RPSC main thread and see if an acceptable answer can be found.

Init is a 7 for the Titans.
Yeah, we need some rebound rules. I propose:
Rebounds: After a missed shot, the shooting player rolls a d5 (or d6 and ignores 6s) to determine the bounce. 1=bounces up. 2=bounces diagonally up and towards the other goal. 3=bounces straight towards the other goal, etc. Then roll a d4 for how far it bounces. If the bounce crosses the square of or adjacent to a flier/lcer, they get the ball. If it doesn't but it goes over or next to a regular player, they get the ball. If both teams have a lc/flier or regular player that is eligible for rebound, both players roll a d6 and the highest gets the ball. If nobody is eligible for rebound, it's a race to get to the ball. The closest figures from each team sees how many turns it would take to get adjacent to the ball (including fractions of turns). Whichever figure has a smaller number gets there first and the other figure can choose to move up to their full speed value towards the new ball carrier.
Action tokens are done normally right?
And should we include rules for stealing? Just a simple close combat attack vs the other character's defense that does no damage but takes the ball if it hits?

Init roll: (1, 4)
Sorry for the delay, I was preoccupied with getting my butt handed to me on a platter in the Metropolis game. I'm afraid I have deleted the PM with your email in it, could you send it to me again? I do greatly prefer the e-roller.
Also, I just wanted to compliment you on the writing. Dr. Light was particularly funny. And I'm hopeful that the ladies attending Rocky Horror might turn into a scenario too. Any of them dressed as Frankenfurter would be great to see ;)

I like both the suggested rules for stealing and rebounding. Though a question: the rules say that characters with a range of 0 get a range of 4... am I to assume that the normal range of tossing a light object up to 8 is not in effect then?
Also, for rebounds, I would suggest that rolling a 6 to determine direction should just mean that the ball drops under the hoop, or perhaps bounces one or two squares behind the hoop.

We can do that (the 6 thing). How about a 6 is the ball goes out of bounds and the other team gets it?
I guess the 8 range thing isn't in effect. I mean, Hawk or Sabbac can throw the basketball straight at a dude 8 squares away but it's a little harder to make shots from half court you know?

No, I don't believe Leap/Climb is in effect, beyond allowing Dunks. That is why I put Kid Wykkyd where his plasticity would be most useful. At least, that's what I thought Lightshear intended from his sentence: "Generally, powers are not in effect in this game,"

Or maybe not. I don't know the rules for fouling somebody that doesn't have the ball and since this is a pick up game, two shots and a tip off sounds just as fair to me.
Should we clear everybody as well? Since we're standing around while free throws are taken.

Oh, right. Basketball's not really my sport, I haven't played it since highschool :nervous: Either option sounds fine to me, but in either case clearing the action tokens sounds right. If it's a tipoff then everyone should be clear, if it's a rebound then only Arsenal would have an action token after he's taken his second shot.

Let's just do a tip off. That way, not everyone is tied up from the get go.
Free) Roy lines up the shot. 9 vs 16. Needs a 7, gets an 8 for a point.
Free) Roy covers his eyes with one hand and launches a second shot. Needs a 7, gets a 10 for a second point. High fives all around.

Free) Both teams set up for another tip off and one of the Billies throws the ball up. Nightwing jumps for the ball, getting an 8.

Still worth it to deprive you of a 12-attack 10-range superstar. I had visions of Harlem Globetrotter-esque stunts as Roy sunk shot after shot from half court.
Kid Wykkyd faces off against Nightwing, and rolls (3, 5) to tie him. The ball hovers in mid-air, bounced between two sets of straining fingertips.
Tiebreaker roll: (1, 1). Well then, looks like it is probably going to Nightwing, unless the dice are remarkably against you.

Gets a 3.
Nightwing and Kid Wykkyd get tangled up and collapse on top of each other. The ball bounces off the two of them and towards Cyborg.

Good question. Personally I like the idea of bringing in the benched players better. They may not be "KO'ed", but they can still be injured enough to spend the rest of the game warming the bench.

Wasn't Cyborg supposed to start adjacent to the hoop? And therefor adjacent to Kid Wykkyd, which would have meant you failed the passing attempt (and put the ball back into Kid Wykkyd's hands)?

I'm thinking it doesn't work for steals (also, that I should have moved slightly further away).
Titans 19
Free) Nightwing perplexes his attack up to an 11
1) Nightwing tries to steal the ball from Sabbac. 11 vs 17 needs a 6, gets a 3.
2) Cyborg fails to break away with a 3.

Fearsome Four turn 19
"Haw haw, no ball for you, puny man!" taunts Sabbac, using his monstrous bulk to block Dick's attempt to steal the ball and passes it easily to Seemore.
Free) Billy perplexes Sabbac's range up to 5
1) Sabbac passes to Seemore. :a-fist:10 (-1) vs :d-normal:12, rolls a (6, 5) for a clean pass.
2) Kid Wykkyd breaks away (rolling a 3) and hops in place to C12, keeping Hawk and Cyborg bottled up by the net.
3) Seemore dribbles the ball over to H10.
"Ten seconds on the clock, the visiting team is a mere TWO POINTS from winning the finals and taking the O'Brien trophy!" Seemore narrates aloud to everyone within earshot. "Sabbac passes the ball to number 88, he moves to the three-point line..."

Titans Turn 20
1) Hawk breaks away with a 6! He goes to G10. Seemore goes up for the shot. Hawk swats the ball away with a 7 (needed a 3).
"BWAAAAAAA!" Beast Boy yells from the sidelines. Game over.
That was fun. :p

needed a 4 I think? Whatever. That was definitely one of the funnest and most strategically challenging games of Heroclix I have ever played. It took me a few rounds at first to figure out that your characters gave you a range advantage that would allow you to out-pass and out-score me. If only I had figured out the Kid Wykkyd plasticity strategy earlier, I might have stopped you from scoring so many points.
It's a shame that it didn't come down to a single shot at the last second though. That would have been epic, either way. Though Seemore might have gotten lynched by his teammates if he had flubbed it.

Yeah, plasticity was huge in this game. I learned the hard way not to put two Titans next to each other or Wykkyd would shut them down for the next several turns.
Ending should be fun.

Barbara Gordon, secretly Batgirl, enjoyed her meal. Dick Grayson was a perfect gentleman and though she didn’t see him often, when he had offered to have Raven teleport him to Gotham for an evening out, she had gladly accepted. He was one of her oldest friends, though she had originally known him as Robin, the boy wonder and it had been years before she had learned his secret identity. Oh, those short little pants had been an awful idea but at the time, she had been fine with taking advantages of his costume to check out his butt. At one point, she had harbored a tiny crush on the Dark Knight’s teenage sidekick and yes, she maybe felt a little unresolved sexual tension around him but even if she still had those kind of feelings for him, it wouldn’t work out. He lived in San Francisco. She lived in Gotham. He was dating an alien princess with the body of a goddess. She was dating her Gotham University textbooks and seeing the Batcave’s computer on the side. Still, he had given her a dance at Kyle and Alex’s wedding, as old friends are likely to do, and Dick Grayson had danced with every bit of gracefulness and flair that one would expect from a former circus acrobat.
It was fun getting together with all the other heroes. That was kind of Babs' thing. Sure, Batman kept tabs on everybody but he wasn't really a people person. He dealt with the Justice League and Max Lord's International version of it as well as the other heroes in Gotham. He dealt with Dick, who ran the Titans. Babs handled everybody else. If someone needed to get in touch with Gypsy or Night Force or anyone else that Batman didn't have time for or didn't like, they ended up talking to Batgirl first.
So she wasn't jealous of Starfire, really. Dick was just a friend and she was happy for him. Barbara was still young, intelligent, and not trying to be too conceded, she thought she was a pretty darn attractive woman. It was just a matter of finding a decent guy and finding the time to see him and coming up with a decent explanation for why she was busy most nights and falling asleep most afternoons. Easy as fighting exams by day and crime by night. Yeah right. She should be so lucky.
The conversation took all its logical turns from how things were going at college (one more semester!) to Deathstroke’s upcoming trial to the Arkham breakout to the Supermen to how Dick's relationship with Starfire was going (they had broken up! Ah! She wasn't supposed to be excited about that. She should feel empathy for her friend. Then again, he didn't seem to be too torn up about it. In fact, he seemed pretty indifferent about the whole thing. Kory just wasn't the girl for him, he told her). Then he asked Babs the question she hadn’t expected. Was she seeing anyone?
Her phone rang. She gave Dick a nervous smile.
“Go ahead and answer it” he told her, with a smile of his own, one far more confident than hers. “It could be an emergency. Nobody understands that more than I do.”
“Thanks” she took her cell out of her purse. The name Garth flashed across the front. She was glad Tempest was back. It gave her hope that the real Superman would return…assuming the Cyborg that worked with the Justice League wasn’t the real deal. That was something life in Gotham City seemed to lack for many. Hope. Being Batgirl wasn’t just about stopping muggers or saving lives. It was about giving hope to people even after bad things happened to them. She knew Batman understood that but sometimes, he lost sight of that goal. Barbara was pretty sure that was the reason he surrounded himself with younger heroes, to give himself the hope he provided for others. “Hi, Garth. You’ll never guess who I’m having dinner with.”
Dick shook his head furiously and mouthed “I’m not here” to her. She could understand. Sometimes, it was nice to take a break from it all, if only for an afternoon.
“Uh…Aquaman?”
“Nice try, gillhead. Wally says hi. What’s up?”
“Well the Titans have a bit of a situation. I think we have everything under control but…I’m looking at a big red demon looking guy, about eight feet tall. Looks like he’s breathing smoke. Have you ever heard of him?”
Barbara could think of a few big red demons but only one was the right size. “Does he have horns that look like a ram’s only slicked back?”
“That’s the one.”
“His name’s Sabbac” Barbara told the Titan. She remembered him from the Batcave computer’s villain files, most of which she had memorized. “Mass destruction type, usually operates out of Fawcett. Starfire and Troia should be able to handle him. Are they with you?”
“Not really, no. The biggest guy we’ve got with us is Hawk.”
Ouch. Hawk was tough but if their files were accurate, and they usually were, this guy was way out of Hawk’s league. “And the next biggest?” she asked with hesitation.
“Uh…probably me? Maybe Cyborg.”
Double ouch. “You’ll want some backup. I’ll text you the number of a friend. Just tell him where you are and he’ll give you a hand with this guy.”
“You’re the best. Tell Wally I said hey.”
“Mmhmm. Bye.”
_________________________________________________________
Garth hung up and a few seconds later, a text came in from Barbara. He repeated the number to himself several times before closing the text and entering it into his phone. Tempest missed the team’s communicators. It seemed like cell phones had more uses than high tech walky talkies and so the Titans had mostly ditched the communicators but having to push all these buttons just to talk to someone seemed like a huge step backwards. You never had to hit eleven buttons to talk to a friend in Atlantis.
Garth was momentarily distracted by a loud boooing noise coming from the crowd. He looked over to see Hawk on the ground with Sabbac standing over him.
“That’s it!” Hank bellowed, jumping up and punching the monster right in the jaw. The crowd began to cheer.
“Hawk! Stand down!” Nightwing shouted.
Hawk and Sabbac stared at each other for a moment.
“It’s cool” the monster said, smoke coming out of his mouth. “Barely even felt that.”
Garth breathed a sigh of relief and dialed the number. If Fawcett City was this guy’s stomping ground, he’d feel a lot better having Captain Marvel on their side.
___________________________________________________________
The game continued, with long shot after long shot from Arsenal and teleporting dunk after teleporting dunk from Kyd Wykkyd. The Titans lead by one when Seemore broke away from Arsenal and had an open shot on basket. He went up and then Hawk jumped towards him from under the rim and slapped the ball out of the way.
“Not in my house!” he yelled, flexing for the audience.
Sabbac stomped up to Hawk and grabbed him by the neck. Boos and hisses came from the crowd.
“That’s goal tending, you little cheat” the demon bellowed before tossing Hawk into the goal post hard enough to bend it forwards. Suddenly, a streak of blue swooped down from the sky and hit Sabbac, sending him flying into the air.
“What the hell was that?” one of the Billies asked, blocking out the sun with his hand to get a better look.
“One of those Supermen maybe?” another asked. Seemore’s eye extended from its socket with metal covering on each side, making it look like someone had glued a telescope to his face.
“Guy’s moving pretty fast” he commented as the streak hit Sabbac from one side before turning around in mid air and running into him from the other.
“Fast as Mercury, to be exact,” Tempest said, walking onto the court. “Game over, kids.”
“Hey back off, man.” Seemore shouted “Try to jump me will you? I’ve got a laser cannon installed in my eye and I’m not afraid to use it!”
“That’s pretty cool” Tempest replied, his eyes turning white and glowing with energy. “Mine can turn you into a block of ice. Want to see whose is more powerful?”
“Seemore glanced to his side and saw each Billy split into two, bringing their number into the twenties. Ahead of him, Hawk cracked his knuckles. Cyborg’s arm disappeared as his sonic cannon took its place. Tempest folded his arms and continued to stare Seemore down, his eyes glowing even brighter than before. A lion’s roar rang out, followed by screams, laughter and a few cheers as Beast Boy joined his teammates. It was looking pretty grim.
At that moment, a muscular teenage kid in blue with a white cape and a lightning bolt on his chest floated down from the sky. He had burn marks on his face and arms but he was otherwise unharmed. Slung over his shoulder was Sabbac, unconscious and sporting two black eyes.
“Nice work, kid” Nightwing congratulated the youth.
“Thank you” the kid replied in a surprisingly low voice as he dropped the demon onto the half court line. “Thank you very much. Just glad I could help.”
“Okay” Seemore said. “I give up.”
“Me too” a Billy agreed.
“Me three” another Billy spoke up.
“Yeah, I’m done.”
“We give up, too.”
Kyd Wykyyd just nodded.
“That’s a foul, by the way” Billy pointed to Sabbac’s unconscious body. All the extra Billies disappeared.
“You brought a mass murderer to a pickup game!” Tempest looked around like he expected someone to say this was all some big joke. “I think there’d be a foul for that if they thought anyone was stupid enough to actually do it!”
“Wait. Who’s a mass murderer?” Billy removed his sunglasses, leaving a duplicated pair still on his face.
“And how many people do you need to kill at once for it to be considered a mass?” Seemore asked.
“Sabbac once pushed a skyscraper over” the kid in blue spoke up. “And then set it on fire. We were able to slow its fall and put out some of the fires but…well, more than a hundred people burned to death inside before we could get them to safety. Several hundred more were hospitalized.”
“Dude.”
“Dude.”
“…”
“Dude, we didn’t know” Billy said apologetically.
“He didn’t say a thing about it to us. Did he say anything to you?”
Kyd Wykyyd shook his head.
“Our bad, man.” Billy picked up the basketball and passed it to Nightwing. “You guys win this time. So…see ya around?” He started to back away.
Nightwing closed the distance between them with a few paces and grabbed Billy firmly by his collar bone.
“You were going to tell us what Psimon is up to.”
“Oh that?” Billy winced. “Fearsome Three just doesn’t have that same ring to it so he’s having try outs.”
“So you’re going to join up with them?" "Nightwing let the troublemaker go. "You know Psimon’s almost as bad as Sabbac. He’ll kill his own friends without hesitating.”
“Well Shimmer’s pretty hot” Billy laughed sadly. “Guess whose spot they’re holding try outs for.” He shrugged. “Didn’t have other plans today, anyhow.”
Nightwing shook his head. “Stay out of trouble, Billy. We’ll be watching. That goes double for you two.”
Kyd Wykyyd flipped Nightwing the bird and teleported away. The other two walked off the court, hands in their pockets and heads hung low.
A cheer erupted from the crowd. “You aren’t going to arrest them?” the boy in blue shouted over the cheers. Surely, they didn’t understand what had happened but a clean cut guy in a cape they didn’t recognize had koed a fire breathing monster they didn’t recognize and the rest of the visiting team had walked away in defeat. That seemed like a win to them.
“What for?” Beast Boy asked. “They didn’t do anything wrong besides keep bad company. Clearly, you go with the green skinned guy over the red skinned one.”
“Well, probably” Cyborg interjected. “I’m pretty sure eye guy’s cybernetics aren’t street legal. I lost count of how many forms I had to sign and how many tests I had to agree to before they let me have this baby.” He slapped his cannon proudly. “Mostly, I think they just felt bad for me after what happened. Might wanna check with S.T.A.R., Waynetech and Lexcorp to make sure they don’t have any hardware missing.”
“What do you mean ‘after what happened?’” The kid in blue asked. “What happened?”
“This armor ain’t just for fightin crime, man.” He tapped his titanium plated chest twice. “It’s my body. My parents worked for S.T.A.R. and they helped me get an internship while I was in high school. I was working on a project to help army vets that had been injured in battle walk again, to give them their limbs back and help them carry on the fight if they wanted to. I didn’t think I’d end up being part of the project, myself. Anyways, there was an explosion in one of the labs one day. I lost my legs, my arms, part of my face…several of my internal organs were damaged. A year before and I’d have been dead. With the progress we made, I was given the option to test the equipment I had been workin on.”
“I’m so sorry” the kid told him. “Believe it or not, I’ve gone through something similar. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.”
“Don’t worry about it” Cyborg grinned. “Sure, I miss getting to compete in sports but now I get the chance to save lives, change things for the better every day.” He extended his hand to the younger hero. “I’m Cyborg by the way. Friends call me Vic.”
“Um…Junior” the kid shook Cyborg’s hand. “Or Freddy.”
“These are my pals, Hawk, Nightwing, Arsenal, Tempest and Salad Head.”
“Beast Boy” Gar corrected. “What’s your superhero name, Freddy?”
“Well I’m his sidekick” the kid pointed to the lightning bolt on his chest. “Junior.”
“Flash junior?” Hawk asked.
“Wait.” Arsenal snapped his fingers. “Superboy, right?”
“Kid Lightning?” Nightwing suggested.
“Mary Marvel, perhaps?” Beast Boy guessed.
“That’s it!” the kid shouted, causing the Titans to crack up. “No no. She’s”
“Your girlfriend?” Beast Boy interrupted.
“Well we’re just…I mean maybe…she is awful pretty.”
“But that’s not what you were trying to say” Nightwing reminded him.
“Oh yeah. Mary’s his sidekick and I’m his other sidekick. Just take his name and put the word junior at the end and that’s my name.”
The Titans all gave the kid funny looks.
“I don’t get it” Hawk said after awhile.
“Listen, Freddy” Nightwing took his communicator out of his gym bag and handed it to the boy. “We like you and we appreciate your help. If you ever need us to return the favor or if you need a place to crash or if you just wanna hang out sometime, this’ll let you contact us.” He put his hand on Freddy’s shoulder. “But you have to come up with a superhero name that you can actually tell other people.”
“You know, that’s not a bad idea” Arsenal observed. “We hardly ever use our communicators anymore. We should rig one of them through the tower’s comm. system and give the rest out to young heroes we meet. The Titans started out as a place for young heroes to be themselves without their mentors looking over their shoulders. We can still offer that.”
“Sure” Cyborg agreed. “I’ll see if I can get in contact with Jesse and Ray when we get back to the tower.”
“It’s settled, then.” Nightwing shook the boy’s hand. “Captain Marvel Junior, you’re now an honorary Titan.”
The boy looked down at the gift the older hero had given him. He watched as the Titans gave high fives and autographs to the people who had stuck around. He smiled.
“Cool.”
