The X-Men (sort of)

Hey all, and welcome to another Marvel Edition of Comic Accurate. This time 'round, you've got guest host Bill4935 bringing you a very special X-Men team from the glory days of X-Men writer Chris Claremont and legendary artist John Romita Jr.

One of my favourite X-Men villain teams was the sneaky Brotherhood of Evil Mutants as led by Mystique. Different from Magneto's aggressive crew, this Brotherhood spent much of their time hatching evil schemes, training for sneak attacks and generally being stealthy and underhanded.

One way they trained was with a session in Arcade's Murderworld, and this brings me to today's team. In Uncanny X-Men #177, Mystique went head-to-head against Arcade (psychotic robotics expert) and his crew of X-Men robots including Wolverine, Shadowcat, Colossus, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue and Nightcrawler. (This was a clever way for the writer to give his heroes a break from constant battles, but still have X-Men action in every issue of the comic).

mu046 E Arcade + Armor Piercing.
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 4 :bolt:
Points: 86
Keywords: none.
m-boota-fistd-shieldg-starburst691616816168151571515714147141KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO:m-boot: Murderbots: Give Arcade a power action. Choose up to two standard objects, 10 or fewer squares from Arcade to which he has a clear line of fire when he is given the action, and move each object as if it were a character that has Arcade's speed value.
:a-fist: Deathtrap: Once per turn as a free action, Arcade can remove from the game any object 10 or fewer squares from Arcade to which he has a clear line of fire and deal 1 damage to each character adjacent to the object.
:d-normal: Murderworld: Arcade can use Barrier (as if he had a range of 10) and Mastermind.

Point #1: Arcade's Deathtraps need to be Armor Piercing. Do not play Arcade without that feat, if at all possible. And with all that Mastermind, Arcade needs a few good lower-point lackeys to help him along. Luckily we have quite a few choices for low-point X-Men HeroClix characters to act as our murderous robot duplicates. Which is good, because this was a big team!

With Arcade's lack of keywords, we don't need to match the rest of our team too carefully.

ui002 E Wolverine
Team: X-Men
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 41
Keywords: Martial Artist, X-Men

His starting 10:a-fist: and Stealth save him from being totally obsolete. Compared to the 2011 version of Wolverine, he's an imperfect copy... but still dangerous.

xp036 V Shadowcat
Team: X-Men
Range: 0 :bolt:

She can phase through barriers, carry passengers, tie-up opponents, block line of fire, and use the X-Men TA to heal the real fighters. Just don't expect that 2 :g-starburst: to last very long.

dr002 V Colossus

ws047 U Nightcrawler
Team: X-Men
Range: 0 :bolt:

Keywords: Excalibur, Martial Artist, X-Men

When Nightcrawler uses Hypersonic Speed, a target hit by a close combat attack may be placed adjacent to Nightcrawler after the power action resolves.
:d-normal: BAMF!: Nightcrawler can use Super Senses. Whenever he uses Super Senses to evade an attack, you may immediately move him up to half of his speed value.
:star: Extra-Dimensional Teleportation: Nightcrawler ignores the effects of terrain and characters on movement.
<img src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80851/HCRealms.com/201105/bill-nightcrawler.png" style="width:277px;padding-right:5px" align="left">Nightcrawler's opponent-dragging ability is the perfect complement to Arcade's Murderbots. If you can't bring the exploding gumball machine to Thanos, bring Thanos to the exploding gumball machine!

The total for Arcade and his seven monstrous mechanisms is 498 points. Naturally this team is more concerned with accuracy than tournament strength. A good scenario for this team is to build this team, along with a 500 Brotherhood team, and invite a friend to take their pick - then battle them out!

I'll be back soon in my regular timeslot at 4935 Reviews. Next time, review #8, Tarot.

When you play Arcade make sure you play Debris one round as a BFC.

Also a nice little trick is to use Rip it Up and have a bunch of low point figs with Superstrength and the Separation Field Generator. They bring objects in, you blow them up.

I'd run that Special Object with Colossus and leave him next to Arcade if I ran this team.

Great team! I'll have to play it! My favorite team with Arcade was something like: Arcade, Psycho Pirate, Jericho, Deadman, Psycho-Man. We had to build two teams, so the other team was other characters like Mxypltk (spelling), Parasite, and a few other guys that reflected the same powers. Then we had to give one to our opponents and play it out. Mucho fun!

I think if I built your team, I might swap out Rogue and use a little older version of Nightcrawler, despite the very noticeable differences in ability.

I always run Arcade with an army of different Hulks, like he has in Dan Slott's Thing miniseries.

Man, that Thing series was awesome. It had Nighthawk and everything!

Arcade is my favorite figure I've never actually played. My best friend uses him A LOT so I've played against him quite a bit. He's a pain in the butt and he's amazing regardless of a lack of keywords.

I'm probably going to propose this scenerio to him. Sounds like a lot of fun. Great article Bill!

i just came up with a 600 point team to play for funzies ( no 10% feat cap for arcade and his x-goons):

Arcade 86
-Armor Piercing 10
Nightcrawler 86
-Camouflage 8
-Warbound 5
GSX Wolverine 103
-Warbound 5
Rogue 95
-Warbound 5
Cyclops 40
-Warbound 5
Storm 40
-Warbound 5
-Trick Shot 20
Colossus 60
-Rip It Up 20

total= 598

here you get accuracy AND strength, as long as there isnt a 10% feat cap

Decided to make up that Brotherhood team you suggested at the end. Its got Juggernaut on it to fill out points, but other than that its a pretty complete roster.

GSX Mystique
GSX Blob
GSX Pyro
XP Vet Destiny
CT Vet Avalanche
GSX Juggernaut

490 points. Add feats to taste.

What an absolutely fantastic review! Definitely one of the coolest teams I've seen in a while.

And for those without the SR Juggernaut, might I suggest:

155 FF202 Cain Marko
86 GX035 Mystique
76 GX033 Blob
74 GX034 Pyro
32 CT033 Avalanche
29 XP024 Destiny
452

Feats to taste or even another cheap Brotherhood member like Quicksilver!

107 JL041 Mr. Mxyzptlk

482

Add Armor Piercing as needed.

Excellent article, and excellent team!

Ignore the posters who have added, oh, Rampaging Hulk and other good Arcade-playble figures... they totally missed your point.

Here are a couple of recommendations I'd made to the team, with reasons below:

Arcade 86
+ Armor Piercing 10
Uni Wolverine 41
Sin E Shadowcat 54
DR Colossus 60
+ Alias 3
DR Storm 40
Mu Cyclops 50
FF V Nightcrawler 61
FF V Rogue 95

Total: 500

Shadowcat: While the Sinister version loses you a taxi, it gains what several figures on this team need -- better defenses. Her Phasing + 17 Defend up front can be the difference between some of the older figs getting one-shotted and being a bigger threat. Of course, the EW up front helps as well.

Cyclops: The First Class Cyclops is so much better a figure, and brings that first click of Running Shot, that it's well worth losing the two clicks of range. He's one of the best 50-point figures in the game.

Alias on Colossus: You can do what you like with the extra 3 points on this team, and a Not So Special somewhere may be good, but I thought the Alias would give Colossus a little more survivability on that first, best click, which is exactly what he needs.

Nightcrawler: I'm sorry, but the new Nightcrawler just isn't fun to play against, and the quality of figure makes it a little suspect for a X-Men robot... I thought the FF Vet brought in a good "robot-y" version of 'Crawler that won't make your opponent's skin crawl when he sees it on the board.
