Justice League #46

“City of Yesterday”

by Lightshear

"I'm happy," Aquaman said. "For the first time I can remember. It's strange… I've let go of so much. I thought my title defined me. I held onto that crown for so long, even when I knew deep down that the monarchy had to be abolished. But I thought--I didn't know who I was without it. I was scared to let it go; that the people would be hurt, that they couldn't handle the responsibility… that it was the only thing that gave my life purpose.

"I was trapped by it. I hated being king, and yet I couldn't live without it. And now I've let that burden go and I feel…"

"Free," J'Onn offered, listening to his friend unburden himself.

"Yes. Free. Not torn between two worlds, not like a prisoner in a crown, but free. Free to help people the best way I can without having to worry about politics and appearances."

"And you have the freedom to love whomever you choose," J'Onn tilted his head. "How has Diana changed things for you?"

Aquaman thought about that for a bit. "The first time I met Mera was on our wedding day. I was marrying her for the good of our kingdom, to bring her people and ours closer together, but I had no idea who she was. It was--well, it was terrifying, honestly. I was going to be spending the rest of my life with this woman I didn't know. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that my first thought when she walked down that aisle was 'thank the gods she's beautiful.'"

"Not so unusual, you know," J'Onn smiled.

"Maybe not, but you always wish you could hold yourself to a higher standard. We wound up getting along. Years went by, we got closer, we became partners, very close friends, but honestly… I don't think I really loved her until the day we found out she was pregnant. Even then - was it that I loved her, or was it just that she was the mother of my child? I don't know. I worried about it constantly. It would run around and around in my head, do I love my wife? Is what we have anything more than an arranged political convenience?

"You remember when the League was sent to the future? (*see Justice League #6) It wasn't that long after the team had come back together, and there were only a handful of us. Hal was still here. Barry… And we told you about the future versions of our friends that we saw there?"

"Yes, some. You said things had gotten much darker."

"Yes. Much darker. We saw Diana there. She… she died. Right in front of us. But there was this moment before, and I can't really describe what it was, but she looked at me and something--happened between us. Something clicked in me. And all of a sudden I realized that I loved her. I had always loved her. And watching her die on that rooftop…

"When we got back to the present and Diana rejoined on the team, I defended her to the exclusion of all else. Acted over-protective--she even had to tell me to stop it. But I couldn't take the thought of her dying. Not after what I saw. And when Mera died… for a long time, all I could feel was loss and pain and to think of my son that never--never got the chance to…

"But eventually, I realized that in some way a part of me, deep down, had become almost relieved that she was gone. Relieved that I could feel what I felt about Diana without guilt. And I hated myself for it. So I avoided her, I avoided the team, I avoided my life on the surface entirely. But the truth was that I did love her. I did, and I do, and after everything I've been through, why can't I let myself have this? Just this one thing, this one happiness."

"I don't see why not," J'Onn said. "You're hardly neglecting your duties. These last weeks you've still met with Vulko almost daily to help him with the transition in Atlantis. You've been more a part of the League and our work than you had in the last year prior. It's been years since your wife died. After everything you've been through in-between, I'd say you have no reason to feel any guilt for loving and pursuing that love."

"It's strange to… unburden myself like this," Aquaman sighed. "To just say these things out loud. I've spent so long hiding what I've been feeling."

"It's what these sessions are for," J'Onn nodded. "To discuss the things you need to say knowing they'll never leave this room. We all need someone to talk to, and we in the League sometimes need it more than most.

"And Orin--"

"Arthur," Aquaman stopped him. "I'm… I'm going by Arthur, now. It's the name my father gave me. Well--the man who raised me. It's a good name, and having left behind the life my Atlantean blood gave me, I thought I should let go my Atlantean name too."

"Arthur, then," he smiled warmly. "Arthur, you never hid what you were feeling. Not completely. You only pushed aside the positive emotions. Trust me - we always knew when you were unhappy or displeased."

"I suppose that's true enough," Arthur Curry Jr. laughed. "And I suppose that isn't going to change."

At that, they both laughed.

"No, I'm not happy," Dinah frowned, crossing her arms. "What kind of question is that? My life has been hell for months."

"I understand, Dinah," J'Onn nodded sympathetically. "Your life is in a great deal of turmoil. I can feel the mixed emotional states struggling within you. Rather than saying 'happy,' or even 'satisfied,' how would you describe how you feel about your life overall?"

She sat for several minutes, idly rubbing her teeth together over her thumbnail - not biting it, but chewing on it just slightly. She sat sideways in her chair, her legs folded up against the chair's arm in front of her. The mixture of body language made her seem much younger than a woman swiftly approaching thirty years old.

"I guess just confused," she finally said. "I'm angry, I'm sad, I'm--I feel kind of lost, but I don't know where I want to go. Most of the things in my life that are ending I'm glad are over, but then there's other stuff… I don't know what my life is overall, so I don't know how I feel about it."

"Let's start with what you see as the things in your life which are ending."

"Well, there's that power Effigy hit me with. We're going with the theory that it was possessing me somehow, or trying to, but I've been swiped with every sensor we have and Kyle's ring and even Alan Scott's power, however that works now, and they've all said there are no traces of it in me anymore. Whatever I was experiencing when we fought him in France (* Last issue) was probably just a fluke, or the last remnants of his power flushing my system.

"In any case, I'm clean now. So that's over, and I'm glad. It's--saying it's a relief doesn't really say it. Even if I still get worried which thoughts I have are mine and which are… Even if that happens, I'm still finally able to let myself be me again. Mostly."

"Do you want to talk about that?"

"No. And then there's Ollie. We're done. Completely. He cheated on me while I was in a coma. With my nurse, of all people. Kara warned me about him. Hell, I knew how he was. I guess I shouldn't have expected him to be different, but it seemed like things were--like we were something better than that. I guess we weren't."

"Do you want to talk ab--"

"No. Did you know Bruce paid off all my debt? I ran up so many bills when that energy was in me... I was afraid I'd have to sell the flower shop to pay them all. I lost my apartment. Well, it was exploded already (*see Justice League #44) so that was a done deal no matter what, but anyway; I got a statement from all the credit card companies and the bank saying my debts were paid off. I'm pretty much positive it was Bruce."

"Do you have any reason to think so besides his being as wealthy as he is?"

"I've worked with him off and on since I was a teenager on the League. I even ran with his Gotham crew some years back. I know him pretty well - I mean, as well as anybody knows that guy, and this smacked of Bruce Wayne. I tried to say something to him when he was on the satellite the other day and he didn't even acknowledge I was there. Which, to me, is just confirmation."

"So you are now free of the weight you carried because of Effigy's affect on you - what will you do now?"

"I wish I knew. I feel like my life's been ripped away, but everything is still here. I just sort of… lost my connection to it all. I feel drained. Like my ability to want anything is just gone. My will to desire is just not there. Like, I could eat bread and mayonnaise every meal of the day and it'd be fine because I can't work up the ability to care.

"And at the same time, I'm angry. But not at anything in particular. Not Effigy; that's done. Not really at Ollie either because come on, what's the point? It's just this simmering anger at everything combined with the inability to give a f### ramped to the nth degree."

"Are you trying to work through the things you felt during your troubles? Between you and Oliver, or just the way you feel about what Effigy did to you in general?"

"What's to work through? I just told you - I don't care about any of that. It's all done."

"You also said you were angry."

"I did. I am. But it's not… it isn't like anger you can do anything with. It's just a general… loathing. And until something breaks in me and I find a way to care about something again, I don't know what to do with any of the non-feelings I'm feeling so angrily apathetic about."

"I think I might be going crazy."

"Why would you think that, Kyle?"

"I'm hearing voices."

"Literal voices?"

"Not--no, but… it's hard to explain. I've been starting--okay, I meditate, right? As part of my training exercises. It's something me and Alan worked out to train my will and strengthen my connection with the ring. But lately I've been starting to feel like there's this, like, presence? Not that there’s someone or something in there with me, just like –I’m not alone. And then my mind starts to just… know things. Like I've been told something even though I haven't."

"Why can't these sudden epiphanies be just that - ideas you're forming spontaneously. Meditation opens the conscious mind to a wider state of understanding and often leads to fresh thoughts and inspiration."

"Yeah, no, it isn't like that, though. These aren't my ideas. And they aren't really ideas, just, like, knowledge. It isn't like I just figured something out, it's like I've suddenly known something for a long time. Like it's an old idea I've always understood. And it's more like feelings than literal knowledge anyway. I'm not suddenly able to compute pi out to a thousand digits or anything. It's--it's really hard to explain."

"And this makes you worried you're losing your grip on reality?"

"Well, yeah. It isn't normal. And just the last couple days the result has been a deep sense that something really, really awful is going to happen soon."

"Like what?"

"I don't know, man. Just--just awful. Like, apocalyptic. And I'm not scared, just… aware. The same as if I realized I'd always known that tomorrow was Wednesday or something. It's like, of course it's Wednesday, right? I've always known that. So there isn't any compulsion to freak out, just to be ready. But I don't know for what because I have no idea what this bad thing is that's coming."

"You're just certain that something is coming."

"Yes. Exactly. No fear, no adrenal surges, no fight-or-flight, just awareness. Readiness. I swear, this morning? I was meditating and focusing inward and finding that calm center spot where my ring draws most of its strength from, and I felt that, that presence again. Like I was part of something bigger than me. And I knew that something was going to happen incredibly soon - maybe today - that could kill… I don't know, hundreds of thousands of people. But I was okay. I was ready. Does that make any sense?"

"Not in the specific way you word it, but such feelings are actually common among us. And as a psychic, I'm even more familiar with impressions of impending danger or tragedy. They arrive like other people's feelings - familiar to understand, but without affecting my own emotive state. It is for me to determine how to prepare and what the danger might be, if anything."

"I don't know, J'Onn. I'm… I don't like this. I feel like, like Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Force is warning me of some impending doom. Like my spider-sense is tingling. But I don't know what is coming or where it'll be."

"It may just be stress. The life we lead can cause a person to begin to suspect death and destruction at every turn."

"Yeah, I get that, but I don't think this is that. This is me losing my mind. I'm starting to see this thing in all my dreams; it's like a crystal shard, shaped like a six-pointed star. And it's green. And no matter what I dream at night, at some point I come across it. Once I see it, a pillar of green light shows up in the distance, and I wake up in a sweat."

"You're a Green Lantern, Kyle. How many years could a person create solid light projections out of green energy with a thought before it begins affecting their dreams?"

"This isn't that. I know the difference. This is something else, and it's freaking me out. I just was hoping you could go into my head and make sure I'm not going crazy."

"Kyle," J'Onn sighed with a smile. "You aren't going crazy."

"Do you know? Did you check?"

"You know what never happens to somebody who is going mad?"

"What?"

"They never realize they're going mad. They believe their delusions all the way until it's too late. But, if it makes you feel better, the surface waves I'm getting from your psyche are perfectly healthy."

Kyle sank in his chair.

"I had thought that would ease your mind."

"No. Well, kind of, but not exactly. If I'm not crazy, then this… whatever it is… it might actually be real. It might be happening. J'Onn… something terrible is coming, and it's going to change the world if we don't stop it."

It was quiet on the Justice League Satellite as Power Girl and Black Canary sat in the lounge relaxing. The orbital station had become Dinah's temporary home while she looked for a new place to live, but with her work running her flower shop and her nightly rounds as Black Canary, she'd made little progress in the hunt and had been living in space longer than she'd planned.

Kara, for her part, had been up for her periodical psych evaluation. The team had been going through them for the last week, meeting with J'Onn to make sure they were still mentally fit and able. He served as a therapist for anyone who requested it, but it was also his job to make sure nobody was suffering from too much mental strain and needed to be put on forced leave for rest.

"How'd your head shrinking go?" Dinah asked as Kara poured them coffee.

"How do you think?" she asked with a raised brow and made a big show of adding a couple slugs of whiskey to her coffee. "Yours?"

"Maybe you should hit mine too," she laughed bitterly. Kara poured a generous splash into Dinah's cup and sat with her.

"I'm glad it's done," the taller woman sighed as she sat heavily into the couch, tipping back her mug. "And that I'm not any crazier than last time."

"He make you cry? I think he considers it a victory if somebody cries in his chair."

"Nope. Not this time. I'm a very together lady."

"And thus the Irish coffee."

"Said the pot to the kettle," Kara smirked in the midst of Dinah taking a healthy gulp of her own. "And I never said I was without issues. Just that I'm very together. You can be both."

"I hope so," Dinah shrugged. "Or we're all in a lot of trouble."

"Llllladies," Alex trilled as she wandered into the lounge. "Private chat or can I hang?"

"No, it's cool," Dinah said. "It's a big enough lounge for the three of us. Kyle getting his head shrunk?"

"Yeah. He thinks he's crazy. Ooh! Fresh coffee!"

"That man of yours is too sensitive," Kara chuckled as Alex dropped into a plush seat across from them.

"Oh, I know," she laughed. "But at least he's a killer in the sack."

"Hey-yooo," Kara lifted her mug in salute and she and Dinah giggled as they drank. Alex sat imperiously and nodded like a queen to her subjects.

"More than I needed to know, but thanks," Dinah said, coughing and pressing a hand to her chest from trying to drink while laughing.

"Ah, hello," Ray Palmer, the Atom, said, poking his head into the room. "I suppose with all this laughing there's no way anybody's seen Batman?"

"Nope, sorry doc," Kara said, going for more coffee.

"Hmm. Alright. Well. I guess I'll keep looking. He had me looking into some things and I had a report for him, but… he wouldn't have just left the satellite would he?"

"I dunno, doc," Dinah shrugged nodding to Kara to give her a refill as well. "He's Batman. Not existing is kind of his thing."

"Okay, well, I guess if anybody sees him… but then, you probably wouldn't. Even if he was here you wouldn't see--"

“You guys… we’ve got to go,” Kyle said, running into the room and knocking Ray to the ground in his rush. He raised his hand and his ring turned on a television. The screen was grainy and the footage obscured, but it quickly became obvious what was happening.

*--no information yet on what started the brawl, but we can confirm that the two possible Supermen are engaged in a fight that is bringing massive devastation to the streets of the famed ‘City of Tomorrow.’ Fires are raging out of control, and the automated security systems of the city are struggling to keep pace with the collateral damage being done by these two men…*

“This is happening right now?” Dinah asked, standing up.

“It’s on every channel,” Kyle nodded. “We have to go. Like, now.”

“League,” Wonder Woman said as she strode into the room, stepping past Ray as he tried to get up. She saw the television screen and the looks on their faces and nodded. “Then you know. Suit up and get to the teleporters – we have to put a stop to this.”
________________________________________

When the Justice League arrived in a flash of golden light, teleporting into the center of the city, people were running in terror through the streets. Buildings were broken and burning, roads were wrecked, cars totaled; these people had come from nothing, the poorest and most desperate people of the country, and this was supposed to be their respite – their freedom from the quiet persecution of the past and a path to a life of worth and dignity.

But the dream was being brought down around their heads and the chaos of it all took the League by surprise.

“Fan out,” Wonder Woman ordered. “Protect the people at all costs. Lantern, Tornado, cover the buildings – we can’t afford having any of these structures collapse. Power Girl, divert the crowd away from the fight-zone and out of the city. We have to treat this like an evacuation until we can contain the fallout. Atom, find somewhere you can tap into the city’s security forces and find out why they’re suddenly--”

She was interrupted by a streak of red as the Cyborg Superman and the cold-hearted Superman came crashing through the sky. A sonic boom ripped the air and they slammed into a skyscraper, cleaving the top of the building off and sending it and several tons of debris and rubble falling to the streets below.

Green Lantern launched into action, Red Tornado right behind him, silently hurtling ahead to stop the falling matter. The League split to try and protect the people running through the streets. Aquaman ran ahead at speeds a surfacer's legs couldn't match, leaping into the air and slamming his body into a chunk of mortar that would have fallen on a woman and her child. They looked on with wide eyes as the Atlantean went airborne, soaring over them and colliding with the huge block that had covered them in shadow. The impact sent the mortar toppling away to crash harmlessly as he landed next to them.

"Are you alright?" he asked, looking them over for injuries as they stared at him.

"I-it isn't the buildings that's the problem," the woman said, clutching her child tightly. "It's t-them!"

He followed where she pointed to see the City of Tomorrow security androids marching into the streets, taking aim and attacking anything that moved.

"Diana," he shouted over the comms. "The robots!"

"I see them-- League! Shift strategies; protect the people and destroy the robots. Atom, keep looking for somewhere to hack into their systems. Maybe you can shut them all down from the control center."

"I've got it, Wonder Woman," Atom reported, checking a scanning device at his belt. "There's a node not too far from here. Get me to that and I can shrink down and ride it to a hub that should grant me access to everything in the city."

"Alright, Doctor. Everyone - to action!"

Scenario Rules:

-- Protect the citizens! Any League member can pick up a bystander in the same manner as picking up objects (bystanders represented by blue tokens on map). A character with Super Strength can carry two bystanders at a time, or one bystander and one object. Once carried, a bystander can be brought back to the JL starting area and dropped safely as part of a move action.

The robot security drones may kill bystanders. They have a DV of 14 and only 1 click of health.

Returning a bystander to the starting area grants the character +1 bonus IXP. If the character is carrying a bystander when the game ends, he gains half this bonus.

Every bystander left on the board at the end of the game (or killed by robots) costs the League -1 TXP.

-- Crumbling city! At the start of the villain's turn roll 1d6. On a result of 5-6, a building is compromised, causing some form of collateral damage. Chose one of the following effects as a free action:

-> Chose any one building on the map and make an attack roll (AV: 8) against a single character adjacent to the chosen building. If the attack is successful, deal damage to the target figure and half damage to every adjacent figure. The rubble deals damage equal to 1d6-2 (minimum 0). This damage is not penetrating.
-> Chose a character at the edge of a rooftop (on elevated terrain). That piece of roof gives way and the character falls. Place the character in any adjacent square of ground terrain and place a rubble marker on the elevated terrain square they had occupied. The character takes damage as if being knocked off of elevated terrain, subject to the same limitations and restrictions.

-- Computer Node! If Atom gets to the node indicated by the blue object token on the map (G10), he may enter the city's network as a power action. The JL gains +2 TXP, Atom is removed from the game, and even if there are still active androids at the end of the game, they will be shut down harmlessly by the Atom after game's end. (You "win" even if you "lose").

I'll be happy to play this, if no one else is looking for a game. I'm almost done with the basketball, and this looks fun.

No prob, Gargan. Maybe I'll make a better showing of myself than I did last time we dueled. I suspect you'll wanna use your little dice-roller-mabob again? ;)

And don't worry, I'm sure you'll do better than I did in my Metropolis game. Losing to U-men was really, really sad.

Very true. I had considered ruling that the JL couldn't set up at the top, but at the same time if I move Atom immediately to the hub then he's out of the game for the rest of the match. I'm basically removing an important chunk of my team right at the start, giving you an even bigger advantage. Seemed to balance out. :)

By the by, are you electing to place no objects this game? Can you do that? I'm not 100% on the new object placement rules.

Turn 1 (Player 1)

Yes, with the new rules each player can choose to place up to three objects on the board, one light one heavy and one anything. But if objects really only hinder your team and help your opponent, you don't have to bring any.

Turn 1 (Player 2)

1) Bonebreaker "A" motors over to N8 and takes a shot at the bystander in H5. Rolls (2, 6) for a hit. The robot's turret chatters off a few rounds and mows down the human.

3) R OMAC #3 attacks the civilian standing in front of him. Rolls (5, 6) and SLAUGHTERS that poor flesh-bag.

4) Manhunter #5 flies to R12, carrying OMAC #3 to R13.
Free) Manhunter #5 outwits Wonder Woman's perplex power.

Free) Crumbling City rolls = 3, no debris.

Free) V OMAC outwits Atom's perplex.

Free) Manhunter #5 outwits Wonder Woman's super-strength, causing her to drop one of the bystander-objects in the square she is standing in.

The roving robotic tank readied it's primary weapon at Wonder Woman and fired, but the Amazon champion was faster. With a spin of her arm Wonder Woman caught the bullet against her wrist, the unbreakable bracer of Hephaestus reflecting the bullet straight back into the robot's armored body. Though it isn't spelled out in the rules, once a bystander has been saved, he's off the board. Thus "Safe." If I had to protect a board full of bystanders from a hoard of monsters the entire game, the penalty for losing one wouldn't have been as severe, and if they weren't permanently saved then the bonus for bringing one back wouldn't have been as high. :)

Really feeling the pain of all that perplex and outwit on the board. REALLY really.

1) J'Onn takes a chance on the breakaway; succeeds with a 6 and moves to B9, still within my starting area, and secures his two bystanders.

2) Power Girl pushes to fly to G12, pick up the bystander WW can't hold anymore, and fly back to where she started to set it free. One more secured bystander.

3) Wonder Woman picks up Atom and flies to A15, saving her bystander. She sets Atom in A16.

Awww, I sacrificed one of my perplexes for that plasticity-trap, and then J'onn just goes and rolls a 6. I'll get you yet, martian!

One of the first lessons I learned about heroclix early on was that with Outwit, Perplex and Probability Control being free actions, to always use them to their utmost because there's never a reason not to.

Turn 4 (Player 2)

Free) crumbling buildings: 6. I'll opt to have some masonry fall on Power Girl, hoping for some lucky dice. Attack roll is (4, 4) to JUST miss her by one.

Free) R OMAC perplexes up Phalanx #8's movement +1

1) Phalanx Soldier #8 moves to G16.

2) Bonebreaker "B" running-shots his full movement to B23, and fires at Aquaman. Rolls (2, 4) which misses by one, again.

3) Bonebreaker "A" running shots to E13, catching Aquaman in the cross-fire. Rolls (4, 3) for a hit, dealing 4 damage - toughness.

4) R OMAC #3 leaps to E12.

5) Phalanx soldier #6 attacks a bystander. Rolls (6, 3) and adds another human skull to the foundation of Skynet's glorious future.

It's funny, one of the first things I learned in Heroclix was that whenever you had Outwit or Perplex, use them every turn just so you don't forget you have them!

Turn 5 (Player 1)

1) J'Onn moves to C11, takes a click for pushing.

Free) J'Onn outwits Bonebreaker's Invulnerability.

2) Wonder Woman picks up Atom and charges to D13 via E14 to grab the HO from under Canary (setting Atom in C13) and she attacks Bonebreaker; rolls a 7 (4,3) for an 18/hit, 5 clicks and the KO.

3) Aquaman moves to grab the last bystander, then falls back to B13 to deliver them to safety.

Free) WW perplexes up Canary's damage.

4) Canary attacks the Phalanx-bot; SS roll is a 4, so she swings that judo-chop and hits with a 6 (1,5) for 3 clicks.

I'm leaving early Thursday for a convention in L.A. and won't be back until the following Tuesday. If possible, I'll be trying to get in a move every day until we leave so that we can get some distance run here before I'm out of town for days. :)

Sorry about the unexpected delay, I had been experiencing some kind of glitch with the die-roller making it impossible to roll any dice. I fixed it by rebuilding our map from scratch, sorry I couldn't get to it until now.

Speaking of dice rolls, would you mind labeling your rolls in the future? Hypothetically speaking there's nothing tying that critical miss, or any of your rolls, to any specific character's action.

Also, J'onn forgot about V OMAC's shapechange. Roll is: (1), so it hits anyway.

Turn 7 (Player 2)

Crumbling City: (3)

1) Bonebreaker rolls along to B15 and fires at Canary's back. Rolls (1, 6) to hit, dealing 3 clicks of damage.

2) Phalanx #9 moves to J12

3) Manhunter shoots at Power Girl from across the street. Rolls (2, 4) for a hit, dealing 2 + 1 -1 damage.

Wow. No faith at all in this world anymore. :cheeky: As you wish, I'll label them from now on.

I don't think that's an unreasonable request. If you were playing a game and your opponent started rolling dice, then declaring after the fact what character was attacking what target, you would tell them that wasn't how the game is played. I can't see you taking your turn, so you have to understand that's what I see here on my end. A series of random numbers show up in my inbox, then several minutes later I see them assigned to particular attacks. Speaking of which, same goes for Wonderwoman's attack this turn. As far as I am capable of knowing, the +2 damage perplex wasn't declared until after you already knew her attack would hit by a wide margin.

Also, Wondie can't charge 4 squares if she's carrying someone. You would need to either perplex up her movement or let Atom walk for himself.

Turn 8 (Player 2)

1) Manhunter #5 pushes to shoot Power Girl. :a-fist:9 vs :d-normal:13, rolls (4, 5) for a hit, 1 net damage and the KO.

2) Manhunter #4 shoots at Canary. Rolls (4, 4) for a hit, dealing 2 damage and the KO. Does knockback damage get added to? I can't remember what the RPSC rules are for that.

free) R OMAC perplexes Red Tornado's defense -1.

3) Phalanx #6 moves to J11.

4) Phalanx #9 pushes to slash Tornado with B/C/F. :a-fist:10 (+1 from Hive Mind) vs :d-normal:18 (-1), rolls (3, 3) for a hit with knockback. Blades roll is (6)! for some big damage. Tornado is sent to F-12.

5) Bonebreaker will running shot F15 and shoot Aquaman. Rolls (4, 3) for a hit, dealing 2 damage after toughness for the KO.

Wowza. Chill juuuust a bit, mate. I was mostly pulling your chain - you need the rolls assigned, I'll assign them. Whatevs. For somebody who's looking like he'll win this one easily, dropping doubles and maxxed out BCF rolls like candy, you're awfully persnickety. :cheeky:

Anyway, no you don't add Knockback damage to a KO. The idea being they're already down and out before the damage would be applied. For Atom, we'll assume he moved under his own steam last round. I always forget that they cut the carrying movement in half.

Sigh. I was hesitant to say anything because I was expecting exactly that sort of response. I don't mean to come across as anal-retentive, but there is a certain comfort level in casualness vs strictness regarding rules that varies from person to person. It doesn't help that in past online games I've encountered situations like this (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=301633&page=3). Besides you're sitting at a 4 bonus TXP for bystanders, and I think Atom just technically won the game for you. :p

Sorry I was delayed. Went into final production on Rainbow #4 and it took all my nights. Back again to wrap all this up.

...And I'm not angry really, it just tripped my 'Trust' buttons. Me, I prefer to play all my games as casual as possible. If others want to get more strict, whatever for them and I try to oblige. But having a good round and then getting kinda-sorta-little bit accused of maybe fudging rolls to my advantage... it didn't sit. But again, remaining as casual as possible, whatever you need to feel comfortable I'll do. And I'll do it without any reluctance or resentment, just so we're clear. All is fine on my side.

Besides you're sitting at a 4 bonus TXP for bystanders, and I think Atom just technically won the game for you. :p

That's a story win only. I'm still getting my team slaughtered! I have serious problems balancing swarm games. I always seem to second-guess myself so badly that the weight is all in the enemy's advantage.

And I LOVED your Metropolis ending. Sorry I didn't say anything sooner - it was perfect. I'm excited to see how this all plays out for you, now. It puts Cadmus on the board for you in a pretty major way, I think.

Turn 10 (Player 2)

1) Frag it. Wondy's just going to go out swinging, even if there's little to gain. Roll is a 4 (1,3) so it doesn't matter anyway.

This is one of those games that reaches a point where I really wish I could just concede instead of having to play the rest of it. Like one of those bad dates where you realize that the girl is just atrociously awful, but you've already ordered and now you're stuck through the rest of the meal. :cross-eye

I don't believe Shape Change works that way anymore. Now, if SC takes effect, you can target another character with the attack but can't take a wholly different action. In other words, if there's nobody else to attack, you sit still.

I need to know what the board will look like before I can commit to my move, so if I'm wrong about SC or something I need that info to proceed. I don't think I am, though - I remember there being some talk about it around the time of the last rules change.

GarganisScorpion

As I understand it, the action that triggers the shape change roll is only "locked" if it required a power action to begin. For example, to activate flurry. Even though all flurry does is give you two close combat attacks, the difference between that and just declaring a close combat action is that if the shapechange is successful against the first flurry attack, it's already too late to change the declared power action.

However, that's just my understanding from my experiences at the local tourney venue, and after a brief look at the rules forum I can't find any threads that address the issue. So if you prefer, we can say that the Manhunter was stuck next to J'onn instead. I leave the matter in your hands.

The dice in this game have been all over the place! They giveth and they taketh away, huh? I'm just surprised at how wide a swing it's been from crit hits and max-BCF rolls to such low drops at the same time.

Now, I am a touch confused - on the map you've got OMAC #2 moved to K13, but this move from D11 isn't mentioned in your turn actions, nor is it reflected in the recap. But he'd have to have moved for you to have the Manhunter outwitting WW, so did he actually move or not? It would have been a push if he did, but you took his action token off in the recap... Clarification please. :)

Oh, sorry I forgot to say anything... the OMAC was actually moved when Wonder Woman smacked him with critical hit, which is doubles, so it causes knockback. Since the OMAC had combat reflexes after taking the hit he was able to survive the fall without taking additional damage. I figured you had just neglected to move him on your turn so I did it for you.

Wellll, my real goal was to take out Atom, and/or wipe out lots of Civvies, and I didn't accomplish that. But at least I did rough up the Justice League some.

I'm looking forward to the epilogue, especially because it is going to impact directly on the next intro I am preparing.

End Post:

The city was coming down all around them. Everywhere they looked, buildings were crumbling. The ground shook with the impact of the clash of the Supermen overhead; they slammed together and shockwaves ripped outward from their punches, then flew apart only to swing wide and come at each other again. Which one was the hammer and which the anvil changed moment by moment.

Wonder Woman stood surrounded by the robots built to defend the city and its inhabitants, their programming somehow corrupted so that they were now mindlessly attacking anything that moved. She was amazed at how effective these automated machines were at holding their own against the Justice League. Aquaman and Canary had been overwhelmed early on, and she’d ordered everybody else to fall back and focus on protecting the surviving residents of the city while she battled the robots and hoped the Atom would come through soon.

She swung her arms in wide arcs, deflecting the vibro-blades in the arms of a pair of attackers, stood her ground against a plasma blast that burnt across her back, and raised one boot to drive a hard side-kick into the center of another when they began shooting sparks from their necks. With a protracted wheeze of digital distress, they all powered down at once.

“Well done, Dr. Palmer,” Wonder Woman sighed, wiping her brow. She looked overhead and had to shield her eyes as the two Supermen came together again. They collided in simultaneous punches, then pulled back and blasted at each other with their optic attacks.

It was easy now to tell them apart – the cyborg with his single bright blue against the cold other’s twin crimson beams. As she watched, she had to squint against the growing intensity of the light from their duel. The energy blasts pushed against each other, locked in a tug-of-war. The alien Superman began to redouble the intensity of his attack, his red beams growing exponentially brighter, becoming one huge, solid bolt of pure scarlet heat. His face almost seemed to explode as more power poured out of him.

It only lasted a moment, but it was enough. The attack overwhelmed the cyborg and sent him spiraling into the building at the heart of the city, through it, and very likely through the ground on the other side. For his part, the remaining Superman seemed to falter, holding his face and having trouble remaining in flight. When he removed his hands, Wonder Woman could just make out trails of energy leaking from his face before he took off to catch the cyborg.

“Aquaman, status update,” she said into her comm. “I’ve got a feeling we don’t have much time left.”

“We’re doing well, considering… but Diana, there’s no way we’re getting all these people out. If this doesn’t stop soon—“

“I know, Ori—Arthur. I just had visual on the fighters, and I think this will be over shortly. But I don’t think it will end well. Green Lantern—“

“Here,” the other hero replied, his voice obviously strained. While they had been fighting robots and rescuing civilians, the young hero had been single-handedly trying to keep the entire city from falling apart. Everywhere she looked she could see buildings sheathed in green, his power ring keeping them standing against their will. He sounded on the edge of exhaustion and she was about to ask even more of him.

“I lost sight of them at the city center - the civic building, I think. I need you there for containment.”

“What—what do you think’s gonna happen?”

“I don’t know, but I have a very, very bad feeling…”

Green Lantern flew toward the center of the city, letting his ring lead him to the source of the tremors rippling through the ground. They’d gone subterranean, that much he knew, but he was having trouble pinpointing them. Probably because he was splitting his focus in a million directions, having to focus on all the constructs he had in place to hold the crumbling buildings up and still power the conveyor-belt constructs he was running to evacuate the people in the city.

He’d never been stretched this thin, but he kept finding more reserves of willpower to use. Every time he thought he’d run dry, he got a second wind. Then a third, then a fourth – he didn’t know where it was coming from. On the one hand he felt like he needed to crash, throw up, and pass out. On the other, he felt stronger than he ever had. It was simultaneously harder and easier than it had ever been to visualize his objective and let the ring make it happen.

Then his ring flared hard on his fist and he was filled with a sinking pit of dread in his gut. All signs of combat between the Supermen had ceased, his ring wasn’t picking up anything from them at all. Instead, he was reading a sudden energy surge so powerful that there was only one thing it could be.

Kyle thought of his friends still running through the city trying to save everyone they could. He thought of all the innocent people watching the promise of a better life crumbling around them. He narrowed his eyes and went on instinct. There wasn’t time to think, only to react.

As the explosion began to erupt, he wrapped it in a field of energy from his ring. Immediately he could feel the impact building against his shield, feedback from the burn of the radiation kicked through the ring and shot tremors through his arm. But he didn’t have time to get creative; he had to hold this down and any attempt to be clever was just going to cost seconds he didn’t have.

No tricks. No jokes. No cute ring constructs. His enemy wasn’t somebody he could disarm with irony or throw off with an unexpected twist. His enemy was an explosion that would likely kill everything in a 12-mile radius. So he pushed everything into the forcefield and he focused his all on that one thing.

He was hot, he was tired, his head was throbbing and his gut churning, but he felt something cool and relaxed inside. He smiled – he’d found his center. The place he’d drawn the power to beat Darkseid, to keep standing those times he’d almost fallen, to do the things he hadn’t thought he could do. It’d never been that easy before, and it’d never felt so powerful.

And just like that, he knew. He just knew. He could do this.

The Justice League stood at the edge of the City of Tomorrow, watching with opened mouths as the green shell at the center of the city grew. It swelled twice as tall as the skyscrapers around it, containing the roiling bloom of liquid light that surged and expanded with every second.

“The fusion reactor,” Atom said. “It powered this city. It must have gone critical somehow… during the fight…”

“Green Lantern has it under control,” Wonder Woman said, but it was almost a question. She looked to J’Onn and he simply nodded. She smiled and nodded in return. J’Onn was standing with them and the sea of people that had fled the city, but with his telepathy he was really with Kyle right now. If he seemed to think things were under control, she trusted that they were.

The green pillar began to contract and stretch skyward until its top was out of sight. She’d seen Hal do similar things in the past, venting a hazardous energy into space where there would be no fallout in the atmosphere, but she’d never seen him do what Kyle had done. Yes, he had contained and vented a thermonuclear explosion, but he’d simultaneously erected protective barriers around every building in the city while continuing to ferry bystanders to safety. People were still arriving, being dropped off by ring constructs shaped like flying Japanese robots and buxom valkyries.

When it was over and the sky cleared, the green power withdrawn and the city returned to a state resembling normalcy, Green Lantern flew to them. He landed calmly in front of the group, his hair whipping in the wind kicked up by the flare of his power ring, his eyes glowing softly. He looked utterly at peace and he smiled.

“I think it’s going to be okay,” he said. “I think it’s over.”

Wonder Woman smiled back at him as Aquaman clapped his back and Black Canary gave him a hug. But in her peripheral vision she saw movement and when she looked her keen eyes caught sight of a red streak flying away from the city.

“No,” she said. “This isn’t over. Not until we find out what happened here and why. We have to find the Supermen and make them answer for this.”

“It wasn’t Superman’s fault,” Power Girl said. “It was that other one. He must’ve started this. Superman was probably just trying to stop him from—“

“Whoever was trying to what with who,” Black Canary cut in, “the end result is the end of the City of Tomorrow, including the near atomization of this whole area. You can bet we won’t be the only ones trying to hunt those two down.”

“Luthor,” Red Tornado said, slamming a fist into his palm. Atom looked at him quizzically, arching a brow and shaking his head in question. Tornado lowered his hands. “I’m sorry. It seemed a dramatically appropriate gesture.”

“We’ll go back to the satellite and start tracking,” Wonder Woman said. “Superma -- the Cyborg gives off an energy signature we can read from space. The other one will be harder, but I’m betting Batman can put us on his trail. Let’s go.”

Leaving J’Onn behind to watch over the citizens that had been left homeless until authorities and rescue crews came for them, the rest of the League teleported away knowing that the storm that had been brewing ever since the arrival of the Supermen had finally broken. The only question now was how bad would it become?
