N.I.T. Picks #1: "Jagged" Thing

<img src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80851/HCRealms.com/201105/rockything.jpg" style="width:100px;" align="left" />Welcome to N.I.T. picks where we pick a version of a character that is Not Introduced To-date. This is not a never been made list, or a "needs a better dial" list nor does it explore alternate reality variations of characters - these picks are all in continuity yet completely different takes on an existing character who has transformed in some way beyond what their original power set was.

First up is "Jagged" Thing.

Just after the "Inferno" Crossover, Reed & Sue Richards left the Baxter Building in favor of a quiet life in suburbia, (a change which lasted mere weeks before they were drafted into the Avengers). Reed put Ben Grimm in charge of the Fantastic Four, and the team consisted of Ms. Marvel (Sharon Ventura), the Human Torch and the Inhuman Crystal.

An early mission saw the Thing and Ms. Marvel launched into space, passing through the same belt of cosmic radiation that made Ben Grimm rocky back in FF#1. The effect? Ms. Marvel became the rocky She-Thing, while Grimm found himself augmented into a bigger, stronger version of himself with a spikey, sharper look. Let me repeat that - his strength and durability were increased exponentially from his original rocky state. If Ben Grimm was a normal human who saw his strength augmented by cosmic radiation, imagine what a new dose would do to his already rocky hide!

<img src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80851/HCRealms.com/201105/rockything2.jpg" style="width:300px;" align="left" />In terms of Clix, this version of Ben Grimm could easily hover near the 200 point range of power (which would work nicely with the starter FF's modular totals). He'd start with a click or two of Leadership to show that he's in charge and have a dial full of damage reducers, with nothing less than Invulnerability (although FCBD Ironman's "Invincible" SP wouldn't be out of place).

"Jagged" Thing would hit hard - a natural 5 damage for more than 1 or 2 clicks could be appropriate. Given his semi-spikey armored hide, a damage feedback SP (similar to Cosmic King) might be in order - people punching Ben would take a click of feedback damage (non-penetrating of course) hurting themselves on his dense stony exterior.

Indomitable defense wouldn't be out of the question, although his raw defense numbers probably stop at 17. The 'Ever loving pal wasn't particularly fast in his heavier body, so the full move charge ability would likely be absent as well. A number of close combat oriented powers are feasable - Plasticity to represent wrasslin' holds, CCE, and Flurry. Another SP that would work for the blue eyed guy: full damage Quake, defining how much punch the Yancy streeter packs, knocking back a swarm with ease.

Given the limited roster of Marvel's first family it's particularly shocking that this version of the Thing was passed over for 3 Marvel Heroclix FF themed sets (Clobberin' Time, Fantastic Forces, and Secret Invasion). The Extra-Rocky Thing was not a one-issue stunt, but rather part of a storyline that lasted nearly 3 years.

Hell, that's three right there.

This was the version of the Thing that got me hooked when I started reading. It was also the first time the Thing ever won a fight with the Hulk ( grey Fix-it Hulk but you take a win when you get it ). I've never seen any official stats as to how much stronger Ben was in this incarnation but he notes almost immediately that he's so much stronger he can barely control himself at first. A little slap meant to calm down a newly mutated She-thing ( I hate that name, she was Ms Marvel then ) threw her across a field.

I really like this idea for articles. I have been thinking about this Thing for a while. Even without going to the 200 point range throw him a 150 point value and change him a little. Then she-thing's 50 points makes more sense for them.

If I remember he was this strong during the "Secret Wars 3" storyline (only in the pages of FF - not a company wide crossover) where Doom seeks out the Beyonder and the two merge into a cosmic cube. I seem to remember him holding his own well in that fight.

Easy - Walking Professor X. He's mostly known for being the most powerful wheelchair-bound dude on the planet, but he's also had the use of his legs for over a hundred issues of comics (NOT including flashbacks).

Most of his attributes (Incap, some kind of X-men Brilliant Tactician) would remain, but these changes would also take place:

- Increased Speed
- Up front Leadership + Enhancement
- Combat Reflexes + Super Senses w/16 defense
- Summon the X-men SP (like Deadman's Summon The White power)

Yeah that was this one. He mentions that Doom's little "touch my armor and I zap you" trick won't work on him now. Its unfortunate that during the time that he was mutated he never really went up against some of the traditional bruiser enemies to see how he matched up now. He pretty much completely out muscled Titania when she showed up with the Frightful Four and She-thing seemed pretty evenly matched her when they traded sparring partners.

In the early issues of the Spectacular Spider-man, our favorite wall-crawler was battling the ever cunning Lizard (a piece in need of a remake). When he was blasted with a genetic recombinator (I believe) and his already jacked DNA was further combined with the Lizard's. Creating the very animalistic and very strange Spider-lizard!!!!

I hope this becomes a recurring feature. It is a great idea for an article and only scratches the surface of possibilities.

As for a character representation that I'd like to see? This (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/2/29279/617411-269656_90311_brainiac_super_super.png) version of Brainiac, for the costume if nothing else.

Ah... the only version of Thing that could beat Hulk!

I'd love a version of the Red Skull that can handle himself in close combat. Arnim Zola put a dying Red Skull in a clone of Cap's body, so they're physically equal. So far, we have one version with a pistol and an 8 attack, and the other is standing around holding the cosmic cube. How about a 90's Red Skull in a tux with his cigarette holder, able to go hand-to-hand with Kingpin (Streets of Poison) or Black Panther (Red Zone)?

Ben Reilly as Spider-Man. Wearing the costume that we now know as the Spider-girl costume. Or maybe Pete as Dusk, Ricochet and the other alter egos he had when he didn't want to be Spider-man for a while.

Great article!

Who wouldn't want to see this figure?!

I wouldn't. He's my favorite but I hated that spike look.

Honestly I believe he should be around the 200 point mark anyway. I know they want to keep him the same cost as the other FFers so they make an even 400, but he is one of the strongest in the MU.

It was also the first time the Thing ever won a fight with the Hulk ( grey Fix-it Hulk but you take a win when you get it ).

Yeah, I was reading FF and Hulk back then. Thing beats Fixit in FF, then the next month, Fixit beats Thing in Hulk. This, for me, established the rule that the winner is the guy whose book it is. But they were great fights.

And I, too, would love a walking Xavier.

The 80s Marvel rpg listed Things normal Strength and Endurance at Monsterous (75) but in Spiky form it raised one rank to Unearthly (100). Also his normal Incredible (40) body armor became Amazing (50). I think you'll find this time period ENDED with Inferno by the way. If you recall Reed and Sue came back to help Johnny who had become super boosted during inferno and Reed built a machine that woudl drain off some of his power. Ben got knocked into it when the Frightful Four attacked and that was that.

Actually yeah, where is our Inferno boosted Human Torch?! Thats what I want.

Never read any issues with Jagged Thing, but given the description I came up with this dial:

E Thing
Team: Fantastic Four
Range: 0 :bolt:
Points: 130
m-normala-normald-normalg-normal7101747101747101757917579164791636101636915469154KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO:star: JAGGED HIDE: When Thing is the target of a close combat attack, after the attack resolves deal the character who attacked him 1 damage. When Thing is carried, deal the character who carried him 1 damage.

Extremely durable, with consistent attack and high damage. However, not monstrously expensive because of his lack of mobility / move and attack (You can't really be nimble if you're a massive walking rock), his lack of willpower (or similar) and the fact that the second aspect of his trait makes him a bit anti-teamwork. This is a dial that you walk up to the opponent with, and go for the long slog in close combat. Expect to miss attacks, but expect to finish the opponent off long before he can get through your 9 clicks of reducers.

This was the version of the Thing that got me hooked when I started reading. It was also the first time the Thing ever won a fight with the Hulk ( grey Fix-it Hulk but you take a win when you get it ).

As I remember reading it, Mr. Fixit won. Thing was beating Hulk and then they ended up in a lake. Fixit, using his brains, gave the Thing the Heimlich Maneuver forcing lake water into his longs and causing him to pass out...

EDIT: Maybe that was in the Hulk comic (yes kids, he used to have his OWN comic back in the day).

My need for a Spikey Thing has passed. He would make a good chase figure, though...

So much potential. There are so many iterations of characters out there well beyond one shot freak shows.
I would like to see Joesph, the Magneto Clone.
Walking Prof X as someone said.
Jean Grey in her Phoenix power level from the Onslaught story.
Rachel Summers in any form other than Hound form.
Wally West in his new costume would be nice.
There are sooo many that would be nice to see. I know there is so many that want only the most definitive version of their favorite character. It would be nice to see some changed up versions of mainstream.

That was indeed in the Hulk Comic.
This fight which lasted throughout 2 comics was my favorite Hulk VS Thing fight ever and heres who it went:
Grey 1st the Hulk took on the Thing (who didn't know who he was)and the Thing his butt.
Then Doctor Doom brought along the Cosmic powered Hulk-Bot from (the Eternals) which was a powerful as the classic green Hulk, and uber Thing kicked its butt as well. And at this point the Thing was exhausted.

That was in the FF, then in the Hulk The Hulk came too, and humiliated realized he'd been using no tactics and all muscle.
Taking advantage of Bens exhaustion the Hulk engaged in hit and run tactics and eventually tricked Ben into water where he drowned him for the win.

So not only did the Thing beat the Hulk, but he sorta beat the hulk twice before Grey Hulk came to for round 3, and then was facing a beat to hell opponent.

The next FF storyline was the Thing needing hospitalization after such a grueling series of encounters.

As to the OP's comments about the Thing deserving some sort of damage shield, as much as it makes sense it never once happened in the comics that I recall.

The dial that was created in this thread deserves more IMP, and charge as Spiky Thing didn't loose his fighting prowess, nor his ability to move.
I'd give him at least 2-3 click of IMP, and at least 2 click of charge up front with charge sprinkled throughout his dial if not given as a trait ala Caliban as well as at least 1 click of 5 damage up front and 1 moer somewhere mid-dial.

Speeding Bullets Superman.
A Superman with the power of a kryptonian and the cunning of the bat, as in this story the ship of little Kal-El crash in the garden of the wealthy-yet-without-a-child Wayne family, and is adopted by Dr Thomas wayne and his wife Martha before a smuggler kills them years later, setting their adopted son on a path of revenge.

One hell of a damn good J.M. De Matteis Elseworlds.

I'd love to see, the new versions of Spider-man sans Spidey sense with his new tech features, as well as Spidey in his FF outfit with the FF symbol.
A Grayson Batman in his space armor from Reign of the Doomsdays would be cool, as would a reign of the Doomsdays set of Doomsdays!
An Actual OWAW Superman fig from when he had stepped out of the sun would be great as the fig we got for OWAW Superman just looked like Superman.
I'd love to see an X-Men Namor fig, and a modern Thunderbolts Luke cage!

With the advent of detachable items/figures coming in-line I'd like the following fig representations that may reflect certain periods and transformations.

Banner/Hulk - Banner as Peter David gaunt drifter with green-tint glasses who swaps to Hulk figure (clamshell Hulk casing, figures back-to-back, or like Origins R Shazam!). Dial should give puny Banner Plex/OW combo, Brilliant Tactician and Mastermind. Takes damage turns into Hulk.

I would love to see the blue costumed Daredevil, from the time Matt pretended to be dead. He was a much more angry and physical Daredevil. He cared less about being nice and more about putting down the bad guy.

Also, for years Hulk and Banner were one, a smart Hulk, not the gray Hulk but a full on super-powered smart green Hulk.. It would be cool to have a Hulk that could outwit you before beating you for 5 damage. Obviously as he took damage he would get more physical and less smart but he would totally kick ###.

Love the article! Not really going to list many, since you seem to have your work cut out for you once you asked for submissions :)

Most of my desperate wants have already been confirmed for Superman. I don't care what paint job someones costume is, so that's not really relevant here. But I would like to see Kyle Rayner Parallax and Ion Figures, as well as a Hal Parallax... But knowing these are in the realm of possible, what I really want to see is a Doomsday with a GL power ring (Please WK!) and a Brainiac-in-Doomsdays-body (I'll never beg for another clix again!) Both are extremely limited one-shot builds, but I want them despite knowing I will probably never get them.

How did Ben change back to "normal"?

Let's see

I like the current costumes for the FF so seeing those made would be cool.

I guess the main change would be no super senses on spidey since apparently he lost that ability :(

Cap (steve) had the nova force for a few panels in secret invasion wouldn't mind seeing that as a non chase in clix form.

eh, he can do 6 with a heavy, so I think his strength is pretty well covered.
The majority of Thing figs have had 4 damage up front, this Thing hits harder.
He should have the 5 up front.

Reed was working on a machine to fix Johnny who was stuck in flame on mode because of Inferno. The Frightful Four show up and during the fight the Thing gets tossed into the machine with Johnny. Johnny gets cured and Ben comes out human. After a bunch of issues Ben ends up dosing himself with cosmic rays and turning back into the Thing to save Sharon from Dr. Doom. For awhile he keeps mutating even past the spikey form into a more blocky spined form but it eventually settled on his classic look.

Skids

Keywords: X-Factor, New Mutants, X-Terminators, Mutant Liberation Front.

Sculpt: surrounded by a half sphere, blue bubble-like plastic force field.

She should have almost zero offensive capability but since her only power is a deflector field, she should be very tough to harm and a great asset to a team.

A SP something along the lines of "Skids can use defend and impervious. Any adjacent friendly character can also use impervious."

That, coupled with a trait that says: "Skids ignores penetrating damage." should be about right. You could also give her an offensive SP that says "give Skids a power action. Until your next turn, damage from any attack targeting Skids or an adjacent friendly character can be applied to a single opponent within 3 squares".

I think she could be worked in at around 50-75 points, with low movement, attack, and damage. It might be worth it to work up a duo figure with Rusty Collins.

I have a few ideas for figs.
1.New hulk/bruce jacked on gamma and helps each other
2.Havok and the alternate x-men he met in mutant x
3.Age of apocalypse characters at least the ones they havent done yet
4.the erradicator
I'd like to suggest one. Phil Urich, the Fourth Green Goblin.

I want Sleepwalker and Terror Inc so I can make a Marvel Team-Up Legion of Losers team.

Hmm...Raven, the Sub-Mariner villain?

Speeding Bullets Superman.
A Superman with the power of a kryptonian and the cunning of the bat, as in this story the ship of little Kal-El crash in the garden of the wealthy-yet-without-a-child Wayne family, and is adopted by Dr Thomas wayne and his wife Martha before a smuggler kills them years later, setting their adopted son on a path of revenge.

One hell of a damn good J.M. De Matteis Elseworlds.

Apart that, Earth-born-Angel-with-wings-of-fire Supergirl, of course.

This is not a never been made list, or a "needs a better dial" list nor does it explore alternate reality variations of characters - these picks are all in continuity yet completely different takes on an existing character who has transformed in some way beyond what their original power set was.

While these are some great suggestions, not all of them fall into "NIT-pick" range. You all have given me an idea for another article series though... now what shall we call it?

Having just re-read the whole run of those FF stories, I say you're way off base with your suggestions.
Bens hide never once served as a deterrent to harm past its durability.
Not once did anybody hit Ben and get injured from it, the one time it should have had an effect ( he was getting crushed by a snake-like monster) it had no effect at all.

Drop the special damage and only give him 1 click of leadership.
Ben wasn't the greatest leader. He wasn't the worst, but he was plagued with self doubt and did little more than merely hold the team together.

I've always found myself annoyed with figs created that aren't based off the actual comics but rather speculation on what a character could do based off appearance and a write-up.
This design is very much in line with not following what the Thing was actually capable of as far as those 2 elements are concerned.

Not a great leader.
Rocky spikes didn't hurt anyone.
(in fact, it appears he even had a sex life!)

Johnny Storm, Herald of Galactus

D'oh!!! Beat me to it. This would be a great chase piece to include at some point, and would also now allow us to have two chase FF pieces to pair up.

Great article idea, mouse! Perfect for a recurring monthly piece.

Thats where I'd go with the fig, a little bit more moderate and in line with what Ben was capable of in the Spikey Form.

A powerless Superman driving the Supermobile.

I'm completely serious.

Also:

Dr Fate (Kent Nelson) is his full-helm, veteran, vaguely-creepy and somewhat aloof mode.

Hal Jordan w/Itty on his shoulder (basically giving him Super Senses)

The Outsider -- all-powerful evil transformation of Alfred Pennyworth

The Hydro-Man/Sandman hybrid monster

I'll echo the Clint Barton transformations mentioned

Hank Pym in non-costume mode

Traditional Pied Piper and Trickester

And it's not legit, but I'd love a better dial for 6-Armed Spidey

Metallo and Brainiac would have made my list for pre-crisis versions, but the latest ones are close enough, if wrong sculpt-wise.

We had Lana Lang and Jimmy Olsen pogs, so would Insect Queen and Elastic Lad qualify?

I think that dial is fine for an E level Angel. He never was a great fighter, and that dial's pretty awesome for the points.

Saying he was never a great fighter just shows me how little you know of the Angel sir.
Not only is the Angel a great fighter, he was the leader of the Champions!
Although many writers have idiotically handled the Angel as little more than a victim, many others Have written him as he should be written: a battle hardened seasoned combatant who has been training most of his life.

Its important to note that the Angel even has low level superhuman stregnth, and in the great Hulk Annual by Byrne and Stern where MAster Mold comes after Iceman and Angel (with the Hulk getting caught up in the mix of course!) the Angel snaps a diving board in half!
And theres plenty more of examples like that, most recently during the prequel issues to House of M in Excalibur where Angel is flying fast enough to outrace rocker powered vehicles, and KO-in goons left and right as well as holding up a collapsed roof!

And then of course there was my favorite appearance ever when the Angel took on the entire Thunderbolts team!

Now although I do like the R dial, I HATE the click of earthbound, its not just slightly out of character, it only makes sense if you take the occasions where his wings were tied up, or when he was so exhausted he couldn't fly anymore, but that only happened when he attempted a cross-Atlantic flight.
A concept that is stupid as stupid gets in the context of a clix game!

Yeah. I thought this was for characters who have had a significant, long term change in powers/abilities that have not had a dial yet, not a wish list for never-seens/remakes/one-shots. But, whatever works.

I would really like to see a red jumpsuit Pym, as well.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but Hank would be prime for the Beast Boy treatment. 6 Hank Pym dials, all the same point cost with different sculpts and powers. Ant Man. Giant Man. Goliath. Yellowjacket. plain old red jumpsuit. Wasp. He can swap between them a la Morph (call it Pym Particles or some such).

He could be a front line brawler, a ranged harasser, or an uber support piece (specializing in Perplex, Prob and Outwit on different dials). That would be sweet.
