Jackstar7's
Generic Generic Review -
The Mindless Ones

Giant-Size X-Men actually brought us several new (and some refreshed) generics. Each adds some great potential to the game, but I wanted to start this series with one that hits another sweet spot for me -- being 100pts -- so let's hear it for: The Mindless Ones.

To read all about these hulking nightmares... hey, just keep reading...

The Face of the Faceless

They've been lurking in the Dark Dimension since way back in the 60's and like the best generics, they actually look like they won't go down easily in a fight. These aren't some nerds in bee-keeper suits falling down before the punch is thrown, no sir (or madam). Mindless Ones come out blasting and hitting and laying waste to anyone and anything that's set in front of them. And in many respects that translates into their clix dial quite well:

gx005 E Mindless One
Team: Mystics
Range: 8 :bolt:
Points: 100
Keywords: Black Hole Sons, Brute, Monster, Mystical
m-boota-fistd-indomitableg-starburst610163610163610163591635915249152KOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKOKO
So we get what are effectively average stats, but backed up by powers and abilities that make them a threat that should not be ignored, lest you be punished. What's the difference maker? Indomitable. They might be slow, but they just don't have to stop. And it's not like they have to get in anyone's face to start causing trouble. All they need to is to get into range and it's going to be just non-stop blasting. The Indomitable also serves as excellent protection against taking damage from Incapacitate, which is important because... Oh, you want to hit them back? Sure, you might, but that Impervious might just let them shrug it off. Oh? You've got a little Psychic Blast of your own? That's fine, just don't forget that Mystics damage.

While they can be handled... it will likely be at a cost to the opposition.

<img src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80851/HCRealms.com/201105/MindlessOnes-2.jpg" style="width:400px;" />

Union Strong! (playing only this piece)

These guys were meant to be played as a force unto themselves. Their clean 100-point cost and straightforward dial design makes them great figures to put in the hands of a beginner, while likewise being satisfying to defeat when played against a beginner.
While I'd avoid playing them in the lowest-point games (100-300); once the games are a little higher-pointed, you'll need to take caution in positioning, but they can just grind down an opposing team into dust. While it's fair to say they're not likely to win a lot, they offer you (the one with the mind) a great chance to flex your positioning muscles.

<img src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80851/HCRealms.com/201105/MindlessOnes-3.jpg" style="width:400px;" />

Wave After Wave (playing them with a leader/support)

Maybe you want to put someone in charge, and really there are plenty of options, either thematic or just for fun-havin'. Dormammu and Vet. Umar come to 286 together, leaving a little room for a feat or two, but more importantly, being close to a round number so you can just add all the Mindless Ones you want! Or drop the big Dorm and just let Umar do all the lifting. This will give you keyword theme team benefits and picking the right map could make all the difference.

Sadly those benefits aren't extended when Starter Pack Dr. Doom takes command, but you might want to anyway. His powers provide a lot of support while he benefits from their Mystics TA. Again, even point costs make this a great team to give to a beginner, but experienced players can get a lot of mileage from a Doom that people are loathe to attack and who can potentially Outwit anyone anywhere.

Now if you want to give these guys a better chance, then two figures spring to mind: Dr. Strange and Night Nurse. I like this pair from their time in "The Oath", and while it'd be odd to see them leading a bunch of presumably converted Mindless Ones, the strategic benefits are striking. You get a Mystic shield for Dr. Strange, while the Mindless Ones get to share that 18 Defense... and wait, did I leave enough room for Brilliant Tactician? I did? Oh, that's because Dr. Strange is going to be Wanding that Watoomb all over the place. Oh, and then Night Nurse heals up whomever and buffs Defense a little. Played at high enough points you'll be hearing groans from your opposition.

Willing to have a DC captain? Check out the magics of Mordru and the terror of Trigon!

Hired Goons

You've got a lot of choices these days when it comes to filling your army's ranks. On a budget, but have you already dumped resources into your mysticism department? Tired of the whining and crying about health benefits and safety violations? Forgot a lieutenant's birthday and fearing a mutiny?
Avoid all these troubles. Summon forth Mindless Ones and watch your enemies cower in dread.

When's the right time to bring these guys out? Well, besides "anytime" the right times are higher point games and group games. If you want to play that team that people leave alone (avoiding Mystics) who then cleans up later in the game: Mindless Ones, folks. I could say it louder, but I'm still just typing this and you won't read that extra volume I'm projecting.

Thanks for reading and please let me know which generic you think deserves the spotlight next!

(spoiler: My vote is going to Gorilla City Warriors! :))

Nice review.

I love the mindless ones...and have played the very team you mention-Starter Doom and between 2-4 mindless ones depending on point values. They have never failed to give the enemy a good pummeling...

Last week I played -

400 Mindless Ones x4
249 Skin Doom
93 Doppelganger
91 Malekith the fruitcake
73 Elsa Bloodstone

5 Crimson Gem
50 (ICWO..Doom, MOs)
8 Protected (Doom)
25 Fortitude (Doom)

994

They beat up the Green Lantern Corps pretty handily. Doom got the Crimson Gem of Cytorrak. Mindless Ones healed up from Black Lanterns when they didn't get Impervious. Hilarity ensued.

GSX Mindless One 100

400 even. Mystical keyword.

pretty fun team

i figure a giant sized 400 point mystic monster, easy 1000 point team, in a set with a doctor strange up to the challenge, wong, the ancient one, and a better mordor (whatever his name is). keyword defenders hulk and more mystics, son of satan, brother voodoo etc would make me drool.

by "mystic monster" i meant a new dormammu

I ran 5 mindless ones in a GSX only tournament. We went to Krakoa everytime. I didn't win fellowship that tournament, but I did win the entire tournament. They ate Phoenix alive in round 2.

Great review!

My vote goes to BatB Parademons or WoS Code Blue: Officers. Both pieces that people undervalue and underestimate but if played right are just brutal.

You should pick one, because right now you're the frontrunner as no one else has voted! :)

I still think the whole "leader" idea is lost on these guys. I ran 10 of them in a 1000 pt multiman (kill based) last man standing against 3 other teams. It took 2 and a half teams to beat my onslaught of Mindless Ones. I went through moving them up as a set of waves so that I could have multiple try for mjolnir. Finally got it after decimating one whole xmen team. It was an epic confrontation as both of the last two teams decided to stop their infighting and take me on directly.

Yeah, I was on the receiving end of this one. It wasn't pretty, and won me over on how good these guys are.

They need to revamp the character in the comics.

Never bought a mystic demi-god with the human torch's head wearing purple tights.

While I ultimately pulled seven Mindless Ones out of 2.5 cases, I only pulled one (1!) Hellfire Club Guard.

The purple tights are really the only thing that wears on me after all these years when it comes to that Ditko design, and even then it's mostly a desire to break that up with something.

He may be in need of some accessorizing, but not a revamp. Having his head surrounded by the mystic flames of the Faltine is a defining look for him.

Really, a more fitting dial is what he mainly needs.

Also gonna put my vote in for parademons.

That's amazing. Might be more so than the SI Howard the Duck dial my buddy pulled with a Dr. Strange sculpt on it. Disappointment at its finest.

Not quite as disappointing if you've read Nextwave. It's strangely comic accurate.

Edit: meaning Tabby on the Mindless One base not Howard. Though oddly enough Howard was Sorcerer Supreme at one point if I recall correctly.

Great review !!! I've run these guys on a couple of occasions and they always do great things. The P/PB is just devastating when there are 3 mindless ones cranking it out.

Looking forward to the next review.....would like to see the parademon and the omega-primes sentinels if we're going for minion reviews.....:) Rep incoming !!!

I've made a couple of people sick of the sight of these guys already.
Favourite.
Generic.
Ever.
I carry 8 of them around with my dice and counters and stuff, so that I have an instant team from 100-800 points.
And I prefer using FF E Dr. Strange + Alias for their "leader", when I feel like throwing in some extra tricks. Keeps that nice round point total intact; too bad the Crimson Gem doesn't quite fit in.

Parademons. Also we need a new dormammu and a Light ray. We just need a New Gods 10 figure pack with never made before characters. Lets build the Kirby ranks.

Awesome, you've only served to convince me even further than the decimation i've witnessed has! Unfortunately, have none of my own, but will be buying me a Mindless One or 3 soon enough! Just read 'em in nextwave, so I have to play 5 of then versus the squad now :)

I vote for Parademons. I've yet to build particularly strongly with them, and would love input. Barring them, GCW's would be sweet too, Monkies rule!

Love those hulking gray non-opinionated beasts. they never give me any lip. I always like to think that NeXTWAve would have had an edge if they could whip out a couple of the Dark Dimension's minions tucked up under their sleeve. Try playing NextWave figs (500 pts even) with one or two mindless ones in a six or seven hundred point total. theyre so underestimated/ people want to avoid their mystic amage. i agree with the original post. fun for cleanup.

The last time I played the Mindless One it was in a 4-way battle on one of the old-school maps. He took a few hits at the begining and was left for dead (so, they thought, lol). He managed to pick up the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, and also had one of Fin Fang Foom's Fingers under his arm. After he "beefed up" he quickly became my lead guy. When he hit someone he hit them HARD, lol. He was heading across the map to pick up a second Crimson Gem when the timer went off.

I love the sculpt because it reminds me of a villian from the original Scooby-Doo cartoon series.

If you really want to annoy people, play these guys with Ch'p from the Original Green Lantern set. Get Ch'p on that second click and viola! Instant annoying 18 def mystics with mobility! If you're playing unrestricted, slap entrench on Ch'p and watch as everyone with a 2 dmg and no outwit instantly bursts a blood vessel out of frustration.

Awesome review! Now time for my personal use for my personal use for Mindless Ones!

First, for 98 points (in golden age) use the formidable combination of Jason Blood and Wiccan. Add Mindless Ones as appropriate to fill the game total.

Not using Wiccan's Multi-Carry, you've got an enhancer who's boosting Psyblast damage. Always nice. Gotta reposition? Take the damage to move your team and get to PC. Is a Mindless One in bad shape late-game? Use Wiccan's support on their low-ish defense to get clicks back that your opponent went through Imperv AND Mystics damage to get through the first time.

Anyhows, Mindless Ones were a great addition to HC, especially as high-powered generics. Gotta love 'em.
